In this paper, we study the preferential stiffness and the crack-tip fields for an elastic porous solid of which material properties are dependent upon the density. Such a description is necessary to describe the failure that can be caused by damaged pores in many porous bodies such as ceramics, concrete and human bones. To that end, we revisit a new class of implicit constitutive relations under the assumption of small deformation. Although the constitutive relationship \textit{appears linear} in both the Cauchy stress and linearized strain, the governing equation bestowed from the balance of linear momentum results in a quasi-linear partial differential equation (PDE) system. For the linearization and obtaining a sequence of elliptic PDEs, we propose the solution algorithm comprise a \textit{Newton's method} coupled with a bilinear continuous Galerkin-type finite elements for the discretization. Our algorithm exhibits an optimal rate of convergence for a manufactured solution. In the numerical experiments, we set the boundary value problems (BVPs) with edge crack {under different modes of loading (i.e., the pure mode-I, II, and the mixed-mode). From the numerical results, we find that the density-dependent moduli model describes diverse phenomena that are not captured within the framework of classical linearized elasticity. In particular,numerical solutions clearly indicate that the nonlinear \textit{modeling} parameter depending on its sign and magnitude can control preferential mechanical stiffness along with the change of volumetric strain; larger the parameter is in the positive value}, the responses are such that the strength of porous solid gets weaker against the tensile loading while stiffer against the in-plane shear (or compressive) loading, which is vice versa for the negative value of it.

We investigate a specific finite element model to study the thermoelastic behavior of an elastic body within the context of nonlinear strain-limiting constitutive relation. As a special subclass of implicit relations, the thermoelastic response of our interest is such that stresses can be arbitrarily large, but strains remain small, especially in the neighborhood of crack-tips. Thus, the proposed model can be inherently consistent with the assumption of the small strain theory. In the present communication, we consider a two-dimensional coupled system-linear and quasilinear partial differential equations for temperature and displacements, respectively. Two distinct temperature distributions of the Dirichlet type are considered for boundary condition, and a standard finite element method of continuous Galerkin is employed to obtain the numerical solutions for the field variables. For a domain with an edge-crack, we find that the near-tip strain growth of our model is much slower than the growth of stress, which is the salient feature compared to the inconsistent results of the classical linearized description of the elastic body. Current study can provide a theoretical and computational framework to develop physically meaningful models and examine other coupled multi-physics such as an evolution of complex network of cracks induced by thermal shocks.

This paper presents a two-stage method for beam hardening artifact correction of dental cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT). The proposed artifact reduction method is designed to improve the quality of maxillofacial imaging, where soft tissue details are not required. Compared to standard CT, the additional difficulty of dental CBCT comes from the problems caused by offset detector, FOV truncation, and low signal-to-noise ratio due to low X-ray irradiation. To address these problems, the proposed method primarily performs a sinogram adjustment in the direction of enhancing data consistency, considering the situation according to the FOV truncation and offset detector. This sinogram correction algorithm significantly reduces beam hardening artifacts caused by high-density materials such as teeth, bones, and metal implants, while tending to amplify special types of noise. To suppress such noise, a deep convolutional neural network is complementarily used, where CT images adjusted by the sinogram correction are used as the input of the neural network. Numerous experiments validate that the proposed method successfully reduces beam hardening artifacts and, in particular, has the advantage of improving the image quality of teeth, associated with maxillofacial CBCT imaging.

We present a novel constitutive model using the framework of strain-limiting theories of elasticity for an evolution of quasi-static anti-plane fracture. The classical linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), with conventional linear relationship between stress and strain, has a well documented inconsistency through which it predicts a singular cracktip strain. This clearly violates the basic tenant of the theory which is a first order approximation to finite elasticity. To overcome the issue, we investigate a new class of material models which predicts uniform and bounded strain throughout the body. The nonlinear model allows the strain value to remain small even if the stress value tends to infinity, which is achieved by an implicit relationship between stress and strain. A major objective of this paper is to couple a nonlinear bulk energy with diffusive crack employing the phase-field approach. Towards that end, an iterative L-scheme is employed and the numerical model is augmented with a penalization technique to accommodate irreversibility of crack. Several numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the capability and the performance of the proposed framework We observe the naturally bounded strain in the neighborhood of the crack-tip, leading to different bulk and crack energies for fracture propagation.

The scattering cross section of the resonant inelastic light scattering is represented as a correlation function in the Keldysh-Schwinger functional integral formalism. The functional integral approach enables us to compute the cross section in the Feynman diagram perturbation theory where many-body effects can be fully incorporated. This approach is applied to the one G-phonon Raman scattering of graphene, and the result is shown to agree with the one previously obtained by the conventional Fermi golden rule formula. New observables with which we can study the two-nucleon weak interactions at low energies are considered. In the breakup of the deuteron by photons, polarization of outgoing neutrons can depend on the parity-violating component of two-nucleon interactions. We express the parity-violating polarization in general forms, and perform numerical calculations with a pionless effective field theory. The theory has unknown parity-violating low energy constants, and the results are expressed in linear combination of them. Nuclear parity violation is studied with polarized neutrons in the photodisintegration of the deuteron at low energies. A pionless effective field theory with di-baryon fields is used for the investigation. Hadronic weak interactions are treated by parity-violating di-baryon-nucleon-nucleon vertices, which have undetermined coupling contants. A parity-violating asymmetry in the process is calculated for the incident photon energy up to 30 MeV. If experimental data for the parity-violating asymmetry become available in the future, we will be able to determine the unknown coupling contants in the parity-violating vertices., Comment: 4 pages. Spin observables in radiative neutron capture on a proton and its inverse process, photodisintegration of the deuteron are calculated using a pionless effective field theory with di-baryon fields. Good agreement with the results of existing standard nuclear physics approach is obtained at very low energies. As energy increases, however, the discrepancy between the effective field theory and the standard nuclear physics approach becomes substantial. X-ray absorption edge singularity which is usually relevant for metals is studied for the prototype topological insulator $\mathrm{Bi}_2\mathrm{Se}_3$. The generalized integral equation of Nozi\`eres and Dominicis type for X-ray edge singularity is derived and solved. The spin texture of surfaces states causes a component of singularity dependent on the helicity of the spin texture. With the use of pionless effective field theory including dibaryon fields, we study the $\gamma d \to \vec{n} p$ reaction for the laboratory photon energy $E_\gamma^{lab}$ ranging from threshold to 30 MeV. Our main goal is to calculate the neutron polarization $P_{y'}$ defined as $P_{y'} = (\sigma_+ - \sigma_-)/(\sigma_+ + \sigma_-)$, where $\sigma_+$ and $\sigma_-$ are the differential cross sections for the spin-up and spin-down neutrons, respectively, along the axis perpendicular to the reaction plane. We also calculate the total cross section as well as the differential cross section $\sigma(\theta)$, where $\theta$ is the colatitude angle. Although the results for the total and differential cross sections are found to agree reasonably well with the data, the results for $P_{y'}$ show significant discrepancy with the experiment. The X-ray edge singularity of bilayer graphene is studied by generalizing the path integral approach based on local action which was employed for monolayer graphene. In sharp contrast to the case of monolayer graphene, the bilayer graphene is found to exhibit the edge singularity even at half-filling and its characteristics are determined by interlayer coupling. At finite bias the singular behaviors sensitively depend on the relative magnitude of fermi energy and applied bias, which is due to the peculiar shape of energy band at finite bias., Comment: RevTeX 4.1, 4 pages. We investigate the change of magnetic moments of octet baryons in nuclear matter at a finite density and temperature. Quark-meson coupling models are employed in describing properties of octet baryons and their interactions. Magnetic moments of octet baryons are found to increase non-negligibly as density and temperature increase, and we find that temperature dependence can be strongly correlated with the quark-hadron phase transition. Model dependence is also examined by comparing the results from the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model to those by the modified QMC (MQMC) model where the bag constant is assumed to depend on density. Both models predict sizable dependence on density and temperature, but the MQMC model shows a more drastic change of magnetic moments. Feasible changes of the nucleon mass by strong magnetic fields are also reported in the given models., Comment: 12 pages

We investigate the properties of an antikaon in medium, regarding itas a MIT bag. We first construct the MIT bag model for a kaon with$\sigma^*$ and $\phi$ in order to describe the interaction of$s$-quarks in hyperonic matter in the framework of the modifiedquark-meson coupling model. The coupling constant $g'^{B_K}_\sigma$in the density-dependent bag constant $B(\sigma)$ is treated as afree parameter to reproduce the optical potential of a kaon in asymmetric matter and all other couplings are determined by usingSU(6) symmetry and the quark counting rule. With various values ofthe kaon potential, we calculate the effective mass of a kaon inmedium to compare it with that of a point-like kaon. We thencalculate the population of octet baryons, leptons and $K^-$ and theequation of state for neutron star matter. The results show thatkaon condensation in hyperonic matter is sensitive to the $s$-quarkinteraction and also to the way of treating the kaon. We consider the two-nucleon weak interaction with a pionless effective field theory. Dibaryon fields are introduced to facilitate calculations and ensure precision in the initial and final state propagators. Weak interactions are accounted for with the parity-violating dibaryon-nucleon-nucleon vertices, which contain unknown weak dibaryon-nucleon-nucleon coupling constants. We apply the model to the calculation of a parity-violating observable in the neutron-proton capture at threshold. Result is obtained up to the linear order in the unknown dibaryon-nucleon-nucleon coupling constants. We compare our result to the one obtained from a hybrid calculation, and discuss the extension to weak interactions in the few-body systems., Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure

The influences of long range Coulomb interaction (LRCI) on Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) constructed on quantum Hall edge states is studied employing bosonization method. The interaction of interchannel zero-modes is shown to give rise to a characteristic energy scale which is of the order of the period of experimentally observed lobe pattern of visibility. The isotope effects for Fe based superconductors are considered by including the phonon and magnetic fluctuations within the two band Eliashberg theory. We show that the recently observed inverse isotope effects of Fe, $\alpha_{Fe} \approx -0.18 \pm 0.03 $,\cite{Shirage0903.3515} as well as the large positive isotope exponent ($\alpha\approx 0.35$) can naturally arise for the magnetically induced sign revered s-wave pairing state within reasonable parameter range. Either experimental report can not be discarded from the present analysis based on the parameter values they require. The inverse and positive isotope effects mean, respectively, the interband and intraband dominant eletron-phonon interaction. We consider a pionless effective theory with dibaryon fields for the description of the weak process involving two nucleons. We construct leading order Lagrangians that contain nucleon-dibaryon weak coupling constants. We calculate the physical observable in the photodisintegration of the deuteron at threshold and obtain the result in terms of the nucleon-dibaryon weak coupling constants. We calculate the magnetic moments of hyperons in dense nuclear matter by using relativistic quark models. Hyperons are treated as MIT bags, and the interactions are considered to be mediated by the exchange of scalar and vector mesons which are approximated as mean fields. Model dependence is investigated by using the quark-meson coupling model and the modified quark-meson coupling model; in the former the bag constant is independent of density and in the latter it depends on density. Both models give us the magnitudes of the magnetic moments increasing with density for most octet baryons. But there is a considerable model dependence in the values of the magnetic moments in dense medium. The magnetic moments at the nuclear saturation density calculated by the quark meson coupling model are only a few percents larger than those in free space, but the magnetic moments from the modified quark meson coupling model increase more than 10% for most hyperons. The correlations between the bag radius of hyperons and the magnetic moments of hyperons in dense matter are discussed., Comment: substantial changes in the text, submitted to PLB

Two-pion exchange parity-violating nucleon-nucleon interactions from recent effective field theories and earlier fully covariant approaches are investigated. The potentials are compared with the idea to obtain better insight on the role of low-energy constants appearing in the effective field theory approach and the convergence of this one in terms of a perturbative series. The results are illustrated by considering the longitudinal asymmetry of polarized protons scattering off protons, $\vec{p}+p -> p+p$, and the asymmetry of the photon emission in radiative capture of polarized neutrons by protons, $\vec{n}+p -> d+\gamma$., Comment: 31 pages

The proton-proton fusion reaction, $pp\to de^+\nu$, is studied in pionless effective field theory (EFT) with di-baryon fields up to next-to leading order. With the aid of the di-baryon fields, the effective range corrections are naturally resummed up to the infinite order and thus the calculation is greatly simplified. Furthermore, the low-energy constant which appears in the axial-current-di-baryon-di-baryon contact vertex is fixed through the ratio of two- and one-body matrix elements which reproduces the tritium lifetime very precisely. As a result we can perform a parameter free calculation for the process. We compare our numerical result with those from the accurate potential model and previous pionless EFT calculations, and find a good agreement within the accuracy better than 1%., Comment: 14 pages, 5 eps figures
