In recent years, next-generation sequencing (NGS)–based genetic testing has become crucial in cancer care. While its primary objective is to identify actionable genetic alterations to guide treatment decisions, its scope has broadened to encompass aiding in pathological diagnosis and exploring resistance mechanisms. With the ongoing expansion in NGS application and reliance, a compelling necessity arises for expert consensus on its application in solid cancers. To address this demand, the forthcoming recommendations not only provide pragmatic guidance for the clinical use of NGS but also systematically classify actionable genes based on specific cancer types. Additionally, these recommendations will incorporate expert perspectives on crucial biomarkers, ensuring informed decisions regarding circulating tumor DNA panel testing.

Abstract Background Adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater (AoV) is one of the rare periampullary cancers, and due to its anatomical location, it is categorized into various histologic subtypes. Its rarity and diversity pose challenges in treatment decision-making for patients with advanced AoV carcinoma. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of the combined regimen of capecitabine and oxaliplatin (CAPOX) in a real-world clinical setting. Methods This investigation encompassed patients with advanced AoV carcinoma who underwent CAPOX treatment. Histologic phenotypes were identified through a combination of histopathological analysis and protein expression markers, including MUC1, CDX2, CK20, and MUC2. The correlation between histopathological determinants and survival outcomes was explored, in addition to an evaluation of the safety profile of CAPOX therapy. Results From January 2010 to June 2023, 42 patients received CAPOX. Of these, 14 patients (33.3%) had not received any prior palliative chemotherapy, while 28 patients (66.7%) had undergone one prior line of chemotherapy. At a median follow up of 9.0 months, the median progression-free survival (PFS) was 4.38 months (95% CI, 2.78–5.69) and the median overall survival (OS) was 9.57 months (95% CI 7.56–11.6). The objective response and disease control rates were 38.1% and 61.9%, respectively. Patients who received CAPOX as a second-line treatment had poorer PFS (HR = 2.62; 95% CI, 1.49–4.90, p = 0.003) and OS (HR = 2.82, 95% CI, 1.47–5.38, p = 0.001) compared to those who received CAPOX as a first-line chemotherapy. There were no statistically significant differences in PFS (p = 0.185) and OS (p = 0.097) between groups based on histologic subtypes. Neutropenia (14.3%) emerged as the predominant grade 3–4 toxicity. Notably, treatment cessation occurred in select instances owing to grade 3 fatigue (9.5%) and peripheral neuropathy (9.5%). Conclusions This study confirmed the therapeutic efficacy and safety of CAPOX in a real-world setting, consistent with prior phase II trial results. While CAPOX proved feasible for advanced AoV carcinoma regardless of histologic subtype, its reduced effectiveness in second-line settings necessitates further research to determine its optimal palliative use.

Abstract Background Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) or irinotecan-based chemotherapy is frequently used after failure of second-line paclitaxel plus ramucirumab treatment for patients with locally advanced unresectable or metastatic advanced gastric cancer (AGC). This study aimed to compare the efficacy between ICI and irinotecan-based chemotherapy as third-line treatment in patients with AGC. Methods We retrospectively reviewed patients with AGC, whose third-line treatment started between July 2019 and June 2021 at 17 institutions in Korea. The ICI group included patients who received nivolumab or pembrolizumab, and the irinotecan-based chemotherapy group included patients who received irinotecan or FOLFIRI (5-fluorouracil, leucovorin and irinotecan). Results A total of 363 patients [n = 129 (ICI) and n = 234 (irinotecan-based chemotherapy)] were analyzed. The median progression-free survival was 2.3 and 2.9 months in ICI and irinotecan-based chemotherapy groups, respectively (p = 0.802). The median overall survival (OS) was 5.5 and 6.0 months in ICI and irinotecan-based chemotherapy groups, respectively (p = 0.786). Formulating a mix design for 3D concrete printing (3DCP) is challenging, as it involves an iterative approach, wasting a lot of resources, time, and effort to optimize the mix for strength and printability. A potential solution is mix formulation through artificial intelligence (AI); however, being a new and emerging field, the open-source availability of datasets is limited. Limited datasets significantly restrict the predictive performance of machine learning (ML) models. This research explores data augmentation techniques like deep generative adversarial network (DGAN) and bootstrap resampling (BR) to increase the available data to train three ML models, namely support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural network (ANN), and extreme gradient boosting regression (XGBoost). Their performance was evaluated using R2, MSE, RMSE, and MAE metrics. Models trained on BR-augmented data showed higher accuracy than those trained on the DGAN-augmented data. The BR-trained XGBoost exhibited the highest R2 scores of 0.982, 0.970, 0.972, 0.971, and 0.980 for cast compressive strength, printed compressive strength direction 1, 2, 3, and slump flow respectively. The proposed method of predicting the slump flow (mm), cast, and anisotropic compressive strength (MPa) can effectively predict the mix design for printable concrete, unlocking its full potential for application in the construction industry.

Abstract Patients with ampulla of Vater adenocarcinoma exhibit diverse outcomes, likely since these malignancies can originate from any of the three converging epithelia at this site. Such variability presents difficulties in clinical decision-making processes and in devising therapeutic approaches. In this study, the potential clinical value of histomolecular phenotypes was determined by integrating histopathological analysis with protein expression (MUC1, CDX2, CK20, and MUC2), in a cohort of 87 patients diagnosed with stage IB to III ampulla of Vater adenocarcinoma who underwent curative surgical resection. Of the 87 patients, 54 were classified as pancreato-biliary (PB) subtype and 33 as intestinal subtype. The median follow-up time for all patients was 32.8 months (95% CI, 25.3–49.2). Patients with a histomolecular PB phenotype (CDX2 negative, MUC1 positive, MUC2 negative, and irrespective of the CK20 results) were associated with poor prognostic outcomes in both disease-free survival (DFS) (HR = 1.81; 95% CI, 1.04–3.17; p = 0.054) and overall survival (OS) (HR = 2.01; 95% CI, 1.11–3.66; p = 0.039) compared to those with histomolecular intestinal carcinomas. Patients with the PB subtype were more likely to have local recurrence alone (11 of 37, 29.7%) compared to those with the intestinal subtype (1 of 15, 6.7%). In the context of systemic disease, a notably greater proportion of patients exhibiting elevated carbohydrate antigen 19–9 levels were observed in the PB subtype compared to the intestinal subtype (p = 0.024). In the cohort of 38 patients who received first-line palliative chemotherapy, a diminished median overall survival (OS) was observed in the PB group compared to the intestinal group (10.3 vs. 28.3 months, HR = 2.47; 95% CI, 1.23–4.95; p = 0.025). By integrating histopathologic and molecular criteria, we can identify distinct and clinically relevant histomolecular phenotypes in adenocarcinomas of the ampulla of Vater, which could have considerable impact on existing therapeutic approaches.

Abstract Background Interactions between the programmed cell death receptor 1 (PD-1) and its ligand (PD-L1) lead to immune evasion in various tumors and are associated with poor prognosis in patients with pancreatic cancer; however, the roles of PD-L1-containing exosomes in pancreatic cancer is poorly understood. Here, we investigated the correlation between circulating exosomal PD-L1 (exoPD-L1) and PD-L1 expression in tumor tissue, and survival outcomes in patients with advanced PDAC. Methods Exosomes were derived from pre-treatment serum samples isolated using ExoQuick kit from 77 patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. Exosomal PD-L1 (exoPD-L1) was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and matched tumor tissues PD-L1 expression were evaluated by PD-L1 immunohistochemistry (22C3) assay, described with combined positive score. Cutoff value of exoPD-L1 for survival was assessed with receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed to obtain median overall survival (OS), and hazard ratio was estimated using a stratified Cox regression model. Results The median exoPD-L1 serum concentration was 0.16 pg/mg, with undetected levels in seven patients. ExoPD-L1 levels were significantly higher in patients with systemic disease than in those with locally advanced disease (p = 0.023). There was a significantly higher proportion of elevated exoPD-L1 levels in patients with positive PD-L1 expression compared to patients with negative PD-L1 expression (p = 0.001). Patients were classified into groups with low and high exoPD-L1 levels using ROC curve-derived cutoffs (0.165 pg/mg; area under the curve, 0.617; p = 0.078). At a median follow-up of 8.39 months, the median OS was 13.2 (95% CI, 8.17–18.3) and 6.36 months (95% CI, 3.27–9.45) in the low and high exoPD-L1 groups, respectively (HR = 0.61; 95% CI, 0.35–1.04; p = 0.059). ExoPD-L1 levels did not affect the proportion of CD8+CD69+ effector cytotoxic T cells in either of the groups (p = 0.166). Conclusions The serum-derived exoPD-L1 levels were higher in metastatic pancreatic cancer than locally advanced disease. Collectively, higher serum exoPD-L1 levels in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer suggested worse survival outcomes and may have clinical implications.

Key information for the maintenance and diagnosis of structures including bridges can be obtained from the processing of digital images acquired by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). However, low-quality images caused by various problems such as UAV movement, inspection environment, and camera parameters can lead to inappropriate structural evaluation due to the difficulty of digital image processing. Therefore, an appropriate assessment method for image quality considering the deterioration of the inspection image in the structural inspection procedure is required. In this study, a new image quality assessment (IQA) using a convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed in consideration of various degradation factors that may occur in the structure inspection image. The first stage presents a method to obtain consistent quality against various interference factors of deterioration that may occur in inspection images. Adjusting the camera parameters minimizes the degradation of the inspection image. Subsequently, low- and high-quality images are distinguished according to the proposed image acquisition method. The second stage is the classification of the inspection dataset using the CNN-based image quality classifier model through training of data classified according to their quality. Experimental validation of the proposed method shows that the results are similar to the Human Visual System (HVS), which means subjective quality classification, and that the inspection image can be classified with more accurate and shorter processing time.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is notorious for its aggressive progression and dismal survival rates, with this study highlighting elevated interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels in patients as a key marker of increased disease severity and a potential prognostic indicator. Analyzing pre-treatment serum from 77 advanced PDAC patients via ELISA, the research determined optimal cutoff values for IL-6 and the IL-6:sIL-6Rα ratio using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, which then facilitated the division of patients into low and high IL-6 groups, showing significantly different survival outcomes. Notably, high IL-6 levels correlated with adverse features such as poorly differentiated histology, higher tumor burden, and low albumin levels, indicating a stronger likelihood of poorer prognosis. With a median follow-up of 9.28 months, patients with lower IL-6 levels experienced markedly better median overall survival and progression-free survival than those with higher levels, underscoring IL-6’s role in predicting disease prognosis. Multivariate analysis further confirmed IL-6 levels, alongside older age, and elevated neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, as predictors of worse outcomes, suggesting that IL-6 could be a critical biomarker for tailoring treatment strategies in advanced PDAC, warranting further investigation into its role in systemic inflammation and the tumor microenvironment.

Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are emerging as a promising technology for reduced temperature ceramic energy conversion devices. The BaCe _0.4 Zr _0.4 Y _0.1 Yb _0.1 O _3− _δ (BCZYYb4411) electrolyte is notable for its high proton conductivity. However, the tendency of barium to volatilize in BCZYYb4411 during high-temperature sintering compromises its chemical stability and performance. This study investigates the effects of intentionally incorporating excess barium into BCZYYb4411, formulated as Ba _1+ _x Ce _0.4 Zr _0.4 Y _0.1 Yb _0.1 O _3− _δ (where x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3), with the aim of compensating barium evaporation and enhancing the physical and chemical properties. We find that excess barium results in a greater shrinkage rate, facilitating a denser electrolyte structure. This barium-enriched electrolyte demonstrates improved electrochemical performance by effectively counteracting the deleterious effects of barium evaporation. Applying this strategy to tubular PCFCs, we achieved a peak power density of 480 mW∙cm ^−2 at 600 °C. This unique approach provides a simple, tunable, and easy-to-implement processing modification to achieve high-performance tubular PCFC.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been increasingly utilized for facility safety inspections due to their superior safety, cost effectiveness, and inspection accuracy compared to traditional manpower-based methods. High-resolution images captured by UAVs directly contribute to identifying and quantifying structural defects on facility exteriors, making image quality a critical factor in achieving accurate results. However, motion blur induced by external factors such as vibration, low light conditions, and wind during UAV operation significantly degrades image quality, leading to inaccurate defect detection and quantification. To address this issue, this research proposes a deblurring network using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to eliminate the motion blur effect in UAV images. The GAN-based motion deblur network represents an image inpainting method that leverages generative models to correct blurry artifacts, thereby generating clear images. Unlike previous studies, this proposed approach incorporates deblur and blur learning modules to realistically generate blur images required for training the generative models. The UAV images processed using the motion deblur network are evaluated using a quality assessment method based on local blur map and other well-known image quality assessment (IQA) metrics. Moreover, in the experiment of crack detection utilizing the object detection system, improved detection results are observed when using enhanced images. Overall, this research contributes to improving the quality and accuracy of facility safety inspections conducted with UAV-based inspections by effectively addressing the challenges associated with motion blur effects in UAV-captured images.

As technology advances, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and image sensors for structural monitoring and diagnostics is becoming increasingly critical. This approach enables the efficient inspection and assessment of structural conditions. Furthermore, the integration of deep learning techniques has been proven to be highly effective in detecting damage from structural images, as demonstrated in our study. To enable effective learning by deep learning models, a substantial volume of data is crucial, but collecting appropriate instances of structural damage from real-world scenarios poses challenges and demands specialized knowledge, as well as significant time and resources for labeling. In this study, we propose a methodology that utilizes a generative adversarial network (GAN) for image-to-image translation, with the objective of generating synthetic structural damage data to augment the dataset. Initially, a GAN-based image generation model was trained using paired datasets. When provided with a mask image, this model generated an RGB image based on the annotations. The subsequent step generated domain-specific mask images, a critical task that improved the data augmentation process. These mask images were designed based on prior knowledge to suit the specific characteristics and requirements of the structural damage dataset. These generated masks were then used by the GAN model to produce new RGB image data incorporating various types of damage. In the experimental validation conducted across the three datasets to assess the image generation for data augmentation, our results demonstrated that the generated images closely resembled actual images while effectively conveying information about the newly introduced damage. Furthermore, the experimental validation of damage detection with augmented data entailed a comparative analysis between the performance achieved solely with the original dataset and that attained with the incorporation of additional augmented data. The results for damage detection consistently demonstrated that the utilization of augmented data enhanced performance when compared to relying solely on the original images.

BackgroundA chemotherapy of rituximab, fludarabine and cyclophosphamide (R-FC) has been accepted as a promising frontline chemotherapy in selected patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Although R-FC regimen is a relatively dose-dense regimen and neutropenia incidence is more than 50%, primary prophylactic pegfilgrastim was not fully recommended in the clinical field. Therefore, the study evaluated the prophylactic effectiveness of pegfilgrastim to reduce the incidence of febrile neutropenia associated with R-FC of patients with CLL.Patients and methodsA single-arm, multicenter, prospective phase II study was designed to assess the efficacy of prophylactic pegfilgrastim. The detection of asbestos roof slate by drone is necessary to avoid the safety risks and costs associated with visual inspection. Moreover, the use of deep-learning models increases the speed as well as reduces the cost of analyzing the images provided by the drone. In this study, we developed a comprehensive learning model using supervised and unsupervised classification techniques for the accurate classification of roof slate. We ensured the accuracy of our model using a low altitude of 100 m, which led to a ground sampling distance of 3 cm/pixel. Furthermore, we ensured that the model was comprehensive by including images captured under a variety of light and meteorological conditions and from a variety of angles. After applying the two classification methods to develop the learning dataset and employing the as-developed model for classification, 12 images were misclassified out of 475. Visual inspection and an adjustment of the classification system were performed, and the model was updated to precisely classify all 475 images. These results show that supervised and unsupervised classification can be used together to improve the accuracy of a deep-learning model for the detection of asbestos roof slate.

This study focuses on the performance validation of a wave energy converter (WEC) equipped with resonant frequency adjustment capability. Achieving resonance with the oscillation period of waves is crucial for maximizing the efficiency of wave energy conversion systems. For this purpose, we introduce a variable moment of inertia (VMI) device that allows for tuning of the resonant frequency by adjusting the position of the mass. For validation of the proposed approach, performance verification experiments were conducted using a vibration platform. Through free vibration experiments, we identified the system’s resonant frequency and characteristics. In our forced vibration tests considering the wave frequency band of the coastal area, harmonic vibration experiments were performed over a range of 0.4–0.8 Hz. In these experiments, we considered three separate cases by adjusting the distance from the reel’s center to the mass. As a result, we found that the resonant frequency of the WEC can be adjusted from 0.65 Hz when the mass is furthest away to 0.55 Hz when it is closer. This research confirms the benefits obtained by utilizing VMI to adjust the resonant frequency of WECs without changing the mass or springs. This offers a promising opportunity to enhance the energy conversion efficiency of resonant-type WECs utilizing wave energy.

Information on the location of cracks in concrete structures is an important factor enabling appropriate maintenance or reinforcement measures to be taken. Most studies related to concrete cracks are limited to crack detection and identification, and studies related to crack location information are insufficient. The novelty of this study is to develop application technology related to crack localization by proposing a methodology that can estimate the location of concrete cracks even when reference objects or feature points are lacking using an unmanned aerial vehicle and image processing techniques. For the development and verification of the proposed method, aerial photography and image acquisition were performed using mounting a laser pointer model on an unmanned aerial vehicle. To build the analysis data, image distortion correction and feature point extraction were performed using the homography matrix and scale-invariant feature transform algorithm. Spatial information was established using the point cloud technique and image stitching technique, and crack localization was estimated using generating crack expression data via layer merging. The proposed method was validated using comparison with field-measured data. In the future, the proposed methodology can be utilized for supplementing and improving the conventional methods for visual inspection of infrastructures and facilities.

Since all structures vibrate due to external loads, measuring and analyzing vibration data is a representative method of structural health monitoring. In this paper, we propose a non-contact cable estimation method using a vision sensor mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle. A target cable among many cables can be identified through marker detection. In addition, the motion of the structure can be quickly captured using the extracted feature points. Although computer vision can be used to transform displacements of multiple axis, in this study, only the vertical displacement is considered to estimate tension. Finally, the cable tension can be estimated via the vibration method using the modal frequencies derived from the cable displacement. To verify the performance of the proposed method, lab-scale experiments were carried out and the results were compared with the conventional method based on the accelerometer. The proposed method showed a 3.54% error compared with the existing method and confirmed that the cable tension force can be estimated quickly at low cost.

The study was conducted to test the effects of using yeast culture (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as feed additive on the growth performance, noxious gas emission, utilization of nutrients, excreta microbial count, and meat quality of broilers. In total, 360 one-day-old Ross 308 broilers with average body weight (BW) of 42.90±1.43 g were randomly selected and allotted to two groups; they were fed either a basal diet (control) or a basal diet supplemented with 1% yeast culture (YC). Background/Aims Lymphocytes are an important component of the cell-mediated immune system. As lymphopenia is reportedly associated with poor prognoses in patients with various cancers, we investigated this notion in patients who underwent curative gastrectomy. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the association between absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) and prognosis in patients with stage I–III gastric cancer who underwent curative surgical resection. Ever lymphopenic patients were defined as those with ALCs < 1,000/μL at any time post-diagnosis except within 30 days post-surgery. Adjusted multivariable regression models were used to evaluate the associations between lymphopenia and overall mortality, gastric cancer-specific mortality, and disease-free survival. Results We investigated 1,222 patients diagnosed between January 2011 and December 2015. Fifty-six patients (4.6%) were lymphopenic at diagnosis and nearly one-quarter (24.8%) were ever lymphopenic with a mean minimum ALC of 640/μL. Older age (odds ratio [OR], 1.02) and higher stage (stage III vs. I; OR, 3.01) were positively associated with ever lymphopenia. On multivariable analysis, ever lymphopenia predicted higher overall mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 1.83; p = 0.008), higher gastric cancer-specific mortality (HR, 1.58; p = 0.048), and shorter disease-free survival (HR, 1.83; p = 0.006). The 5-year gastric cancer-specific mortality rates for ever- and never lymphopenic patients were 10.9% and 3.7%, respectively; their 5-year cumulative recurrence rates were 15.1% and 4.6%, respectively. Conclusions This study demonstrate that ever lymphopenia is independent prognostic factor for overall mortality and recurrence in patients with potentially curable gastric cancer; hence, ALCs may be a biomarker for predicting the prognoses of patients with stage I–III gastric cancer who had curative gastrectomy.

In 2017, Korean Society of Medical Oncology (KSMO) published the Korean management guideline of metastatic prostate cancer. This paper is the 2nd edition of the Korean management guideline of metastatic prostate cancer. We updated recent many changes of management in metastatic prostate cancer in this 2nd edition guideline. The present guideline consists of the three categories: management of metastatic hormone sensitive prostate cancer; management of metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer; and clinical consideration for treating patients with metastatic prostate cancer. In category 1 and 2, levels of evidence (LEs) have been mentioned according to the general principles of evidence-based medicine. And grades of recommendation (GR) was taken into account the quality of evidence, the balance between desirable and undesirable effects, the values and preferences, and the use of resources and GR were divided into strong recommendations (SR) and weak recommendations (WR). A total of 16 key questions are selected. And we proposed recommendations and described key evidence for each recommendation. The treatment landscape of metastatic prostate cancer is changing very rapid and many trials are ongoing. To verify the results of the future trials is necessary and should be applied to the treatment for metastatic prostate cancer patients in the clinical practice. Especially, many prostate cancer patients are old age, have multiple underlying medical comorbidities, clinicians should be aware of the significance of medical management as well as clinical efficacy of systemic treatment.

Prestressed girders reduce cracking and allow for long spans, but their construction requires complex equipment and strict quality control. Their accurate design depends on a precise knowledge of tensioning force and stresses, as well as monitoring the tendon force to prevent excessive creep. Estimating tendon stress is challenging due to limited access to prestressing tendons. This study utilizes a strain-based machine learning method to estimate real-time applied tendon stress. A dataset was generated using finite element method (FEM) analysis, varying the tendon stress in a 45 m girder. Network models were trained and tested on various tendon force scenarios, with prediction errors of less than 10%. The model with the lowest RMSE was chosen for stress prediction, accurately estimating the tendon stress, and providing real-time tensioning force adjustment. The research offers insights into optimizing girder locations and strain numbers. The results demonstrate the feasibility of using machine learning with strain data for instant tendon force estimation.

APOBEC3B enzymes are endogenous carcinogenic mutagens. Metastatic urothelial carcinomas often harbor APOBEC3B-mediated mutations in which tCw to T or G substitution occurs. Here, we evaluated patient survival and CD8+ T-cell density according to APOBEC3B expression in patients with metastatic urothelial carcinoma who underwent cytotoxic chemotherapy. We performed a retrospective study on 94 patients with urothelial carcinoma who were treated with first line palliative chemotherapy. APOBEC3B expression and CD8+/CD3+ ratio of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes were evaluated using immunohistochemistry. Kaplan–Meier survival curves were generated and the log-rank test was employed. The association between APOBEC3B expression and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes was analyzed using Pearson’s chi-squared test. High APOBEC3B expression was detected in 71 of the 94 patients (75.5%). The median overall survival was longer in patients with high APOBEC3B expression (15 months) than in those with low expression (p = 0.045). The hazard ratio obtained based on the Cox regression analysis was 0.292 (95% confidence interval 0.118–0.723, p = 0.008). APOBEC3B expression was associated with the CD8+/CD3+ ratio (2.914, 95% confidence interval 1.030–8.249, p = 0.039). Collectively, APOBEC3B expression was an independent prognostic factor in patients with metastatic urothelial carcinoma treated with platinum-based chemotherapy. Tumor-infiltrating cytotoxic T cells were associated with APOBEC3B expression.

Abstract Background To investigate the clinical impact of sarcopenia and skeletal muscle density (SMD) among patients with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma who underwent palliative first line gemcitabine-based chemotherapy. Methods A total of 330 patients treated with first line gemcitabine-based chemotherapy between January 2010 and March 2017 were included. CT scans before chemotherapy and after 8±2 weeks were evaluated. The L3 skeletal muscle index (SMI) was used to detect sarcopenia and calculated as the total area of the L3 skeletal muscle divided by the height-squared (cm2/m2). SMD was quantified as the mean muscle radiation attenuation of the muscle cross-sectional area across the L3 vertebral body level and was assessed between − 29 and + 150 Hounsfield units. Abstract Background The clinical significance of pre-sarcopenia in colorectal cancer obstruction has not yet been described. The present study aimed to determine the short- and long-term oncologic impacts of pre-sarcopenia in obstructive colorectal cancer. Methods We retrospectively analyzed 214 patients with obstructive colon cancer between January 2004 and December 2013. Initial staging computed tomography (CT) scans identified pre-sarcopenia and visceral obesity by measuring the muscle and visceral fat areas at the third lumbar vertebra level. Both short-term postoperative and long-term oncologic outcomes were analyzed. Results Among all 214 patients, 71 (33.2%) were diagnosed with pre-sarcopenia. Pre-sarcopenia had a negative oncologic impact in both disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS), (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.86, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04–3.13, p = 0.037, and HR = 1.92, CI 1.02–3.60, p = 0.043, respectively). Visceral adiposity, body mass index (BMI), and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) did not significantly impact DFS and OS. Conclusion Pre-sarcopenia is a clinical factor significantly associated with OS and DFS but not with short-term complications in obstructive colorectal cancer. In future, prospective studies should incorporate body composition data in patient risk assessments and oncologic prediction tools.

This paper aims to verify the extraction of modal parameters from angle signals using the stochastic subspace identification (SSI) method. The use of angle signal-based mode shapes can reduce the loss of node information and enhance the robustness in curva-ture-based damage detection. In this regard, the system identification of angle signals should be first conducted prior to the damage detection. For large structures, an out-put-only system identification method should be considered for the modal analysis of an-gle signals, because artificial shaking excitation or impact excitation is practically impos-sible. In order to achieve this, the SSI method is used; it is one of the most powerful tools among the output-only system identification methods because it does not cover nonlinear problems. In order to demonstrate the system identification process of angle signals using the SSI method, the transformation matrix is assumed to represent the relationship be-tween the angular displacement and the normal displacement. Next, the modified block Hankel matrix that consists of angle signals, which can be expressed as a multiplication between the transformation matrix and displacement series vector, is constructed. The observability matrix can be estimated using the singular value decomposition for the pro-jection of the future part onto the past part of the modified block Hankel matrix. Finally, the natural frequencies and angle signal-based mode shapes are calculated using the state and observation matrices. In order to verify the results of the analytical studies, the modal properties estimated from the numerical simulation and the SSI method using angu-lar-velocity measurements are compared.

A total of 200 26-day-old crossbred weaning piglets ((Yorkshire × Landrace) × Duroc; 6.55 ± 0.62 kg) were used in a 6-week experiment to evaluate the effects of adding probiotics complex supplementation (Syner-ZymeF10) with high and low ZnO diets on the performance of weaning pigs in 42 days. Pigs were randomly allotted to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement and they were supplemented with two concentration level of ZnO with 3000 ppm and 300 ppm and probiotics complex supplementation with 0 and 0.1%. There were ten replicate pens per treatment with five pigs per pen (two gilts and three barrows). Pigs fed diets with 3000 ppm ZnO had a higher BW during the overall period and ADG during d 8–21, d 22–42, and overall period than pigs receiving 300 ppm ZnO diets (p < 0.05), as well as a G: F which tended to increase on d 8–21 and overall period (p < 0.1) and decreased tendency on faecal gas emission of methyl mercaptans and acetic acid concentration (p < 0.1). Dietary probiotics complex supplementation had decreased the E. coli count (p < 0.05) and tended to increase the Lactobacillus count (p < 0.1). Dietary probiotics complex supplementation and different level of ZnO supplementation had no significant effect on the nutrition digestibility and faecal score (p > 0.05). In conclusion, probiotic supplementation reduced the fecal E. coli counts and tended to improve Lactobacillus counts. There were no interactive effects between ZnO and probiotic complex supplementation on all the measured parameters.

We investigated the effect and interaction of lysolecithin (LPL) and nutrition level on growth performance, nutrient ileal digestibility, expression of growth-related genes and nutrient transporter genes in broilers. A total of 1280 one day old Ross 308 mixed sex chicks with an average body weight 42.23 ± 2.4 g were randomly allotted into 2 × 2 factorial arrangement (20 replicates per treatment and 16 chickens per replicate) with two types of diet (Normal nutrition treatments starter, grower and finisher diets with ME of 3000 kcal/kg, 3100 kcal/kg and 3200 kcal/kg, respectively, and CP level of 22%, 21%, and 20%, respectively; high nutrition treatments diets with 50 kcal/kg ME and 0.5% CP higher than normal nutrition treatment at each stage). Two levels of LPL supplementation (0 and 500 mg/kg) were also employed. From day 21 to day 35 and full stage of the experiment, the birds fed a high nutrition (HN) diet had a greater body weight gain (BWG) and lower feed conversion ratio (FCR) than those fed a normal nutrition (NN) diet (p < 0.05). Besides, lysolecithin increased BWG significantly (p < 0.05). The birds fed a diet with LPL revealed increasing fat digestibility compared to birds fed the basal diet (p < 0.05). LPL significantly increased the ileal digestibility of amino acids, including Ile, Thr, Phe, His, Arg, Tyr, Glu, Pro, Gly, Ala (p < 0.05). No interaction was found between LPL and nutrition level in BWG, FCR and nutrient digestibility. In HN diet, the genes expression of myogenic differentiation 1 (MYOD1), myogenin (MYOG), cluster of differentiation 36 (CD36), fatty acid-binding protein (FABP1), cationic amino acid transporter 1 (CAT1) and Y + L amino acid transporter 1 (y+, LAT1) were significantly elevated via LPL supplementation (p < 0.05). In NN diet, LPL significantly increased the genes expression of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), MYOD1 and y+, LAT1 (p < 0.05). In conclusion, upregulating the nutrients transporter gene and growth-related gene expression of the host, independent of nutrition level changes, may be the action mechanism of lysolecithin on growth promotion in animals.

As the number of old bridges increases, the number of bridges with structural defects is also increasing. Timely inspection and maintenance of bridges are required because structural degradation is accelerated after bridge damage. Recently, in the field of structural health monitoring, a bridge inspection using an unmanned aerial vehicle system (UAS) is receiving a lot of attention. In this paper, UAS-based automatic damage detection and bridge condition evaluation were performed on existing bridges. From the process of preparing for inspection to the management of inspection data, the entire bridge inspection process was performed through field tests. The necessary element techniques for each stage were explained and the results were confirmed. Finally, UAS-based results were compared with conventional human-based visual inspection results. As a result, it was confirmed that the UAS-based bridge inspection is faster and more objective than the existing technology. Therefore, it was confirmed that the automatic bridge inspection method based on unmanned aerial vehicles can be applied to the field as a promising technology.

Background: Ramucirumab as monotherapy or in combination with paclitaxel is a second-line treatment option recommended for patients with locally advanced unresectable or metastatic gastric or gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinoma. However, real-world data from large study cohorts focused on ramucirumab plus paclitaxel in gastric cancer are limited. Methods: The study population comprised all patients with gastric or GEJ cancer who received ramucirumab plus paclitaxel in South Korea between 1 May 2018 and 31 December 2018. We included patients with advanced gastric or GEJ adenocarcinoma and disease progression after first-line platinum and fluoropyrimidine-containing combination chemotherapy. Results: In total, 1063 patients were included in the present study. The objective response rate and disease control rate were 15.1% and 57.7%, respectively. The median progression-free survival was 4.03 months (95% confidence interval, 3.80–4.27) and the median overall survival was 10.03 months (95% confidence interval, 9.33–10.73). Grade 3 or higher treatment-related adverse events with incidence of ⩾5% were neutropenia (35.1%) and anemia (10.5%). Based on multivariable analysis, overall survival was negatively associated with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status ⩾2, weight loss ⩾10% in the previous 3 months, GEJ of primary tumor, poor or unknown histologic grade, number of metastatic sites ⩾3, presence of peritoneal metastasis, no prior gastrectomy, and time to second-line since first-line treatment

We evaluated the effects of supplementing an emulsifier blend (sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate and 1, 3-diacylglycerol) in diets with different energy content (normal and 100 kcal/kg reduced) on the growth performance, meat quality, apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), and blood lipid profile of broiler chickens. Male broiler chickens (n = 1024), with an initial body weight (BW) of 43.60±0.2 g, were used in a 35-day trial. Broiler chickens of similar body weight were randomly allocated to one of four treatment groups in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with two levels of dietary energy content and with or without emulsifier blend. Broiler chickens fed on emulsifier blend supplemented diet had a higher body weight gain (BWG) during d 7–21, d 21–35, and overall period (P0.10) were observed on the growth performance, ATTD, blood lipid profiles, meat quality and relative organ weight. In conclusion, dietary emulsifier blend supplementation could improve growth performance, while low dietary energy content would decrease growth performance and ATTD of energy.

Abstract Background We sought to assess the prognostic significance of lymph node ratio (LNR) and N stage in patients undergoing D2 gastrectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy, S-1, and XELOX and to compare the efficacy of them according to LNRs and N stages to evaluate the clinical impact of using LNRs compared with using N staging. Methods Patients undergoing D2 gastrectomy with adequate lymph node dissection and adjuvant chemotherapy for stage II/III gastric cancer between Mar 2011 and Dec 2016 were analysed. Of the 477 patients enrolled, 331 received S-1 and 146 received XELOX. LNR groups were segregated as 0, 0–0.1, 0.1–0.25, and > 0.25 (LNR0, 1, 2, and 3, respectively). Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to minimise potential selection bias and compare DFS and OS stratified by LNRs and N stages in the two treatment groups. Results After PSM, the sample size of each group was 110 patients, and variables were well balanced. All patients had more than 15 examined lymph nodes (median 51, range 16~124). In multivariate analysis, LNR (> 0.25) and N stage (N3) showed independent prognostic value in OS and DFS, but LNR (> 0.25) showed better prognostic value. In subgroup analysis, the LNR3 group showed better 5-year DFS (20% vs 54%; HR 0.29; p = 0.004) and 5-year OS (26% vs 67%; HR 0.28; p = 0.020) in the XELOX group. The N3 group showed better 5-year DFS (38% vs 66%; HR 0.40; p = 0.004) and 5-year OS (47% vs 71%; HR 0.45; p = 0.019) in the XELOX group. Stage IIIC showed better 5-year DFS (22% vs 57%; HR 0.32; p = 0.004) and 5-year OS (27% vs 68%; HR 0.32; p = 0.009) in the XELOX group. The LNR3 group within N3 patients showed better 5-year DFS (21% vs 55%; HR 0.31; p = 0.004) and 5-year OS (27% vs 68%; HR 0.34; p = 0.018) in the XELOX group. Conclusions LNR showed better prognostic value than N staging. LNR3, N3 and stage IIIC groups showed the superior efficacy of XELOX to that of S-1. And the LNR3 group within N3 patients showed more survival benefit from XELOX. LNR > 0.25, N3 stage and stage IIIC were the discriminant factors for selecting XELOX over S-1. Abstract Background This study aimed to assess the effect of antibiotics on the clinical outcomes of patients with solid cancers undergoing treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Methods The medical records of 234 patients treated with ICIs for any type of solid cancer between February 2012 and May 2018 at the Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. The data of patients who received antibiotics within 60 days before the initiation of ICI treatment were analyzed. The patients’ responses to ICI treatment and their survival were evaluated. Results Non-small-cell lung carcinoma was the most common type of cancer. About half of the patients were treated with nivolumab (51.9%), and cephalosporin (35.2%) was the most commonly used class of antibiotics. The total objective response rate was 21%. Antibiotics use was associated with a decreased objective response (odds ratio 0.466, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.225–0.968, p = 0.040). Artificial intelligence (AI)-aided research currently enjoys active use in a wide array of fields thanks to the rapid development of computing capability and the use of Big Data. Until now, forecasting methods were primarily based on physics models and statistical studies. Today, AI is utilized in disaster prevention forecasts by studying the relationships between physical factors and their characteristics. Current studies also involve combining AI and physics models to supplement the strengths and weaknesses of each aspect. However, prior to these studies, an optimization algorithm for the AI model should be developed and its applicability should be studied. This study aimed to improve the forecast performance by constructing a model for neural network optimization. An artificial neural network (ANN) followed the ever-changing path of a typhoon to produce similar typhoon predictions, while the optimization achieved by the neural network algorithm was examined by evaluating the activation function, hidden layer composition, and dropouts. A learning and test dataset was constructed from the available digital data of one typhoon that affected Korea throughout the record period (1951–2018). As a result of neural network optimization, assessments showed a higher degree of forecast accuracy.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation of a mixed yeast culture (MYC; Saccharomyces cerevisiae YJM1592 and Kluyveromyces maxianus TB7258 in a 1:1 ratio) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, meat quality, blood parameters, and gut health of broiler chickens. In total, 576 one-day-old male broilers (Ross 308) with an average initial bodyweight (BW) of 37±0.51 g were used in a 35-day experiment with a completely randomized design. The broilers were randomly assigned to 3 dietary treatments: CON, basal diet; TRT1, CON + 0.1% MYC; and TRT 2, CON + 0.2% MYC. From days 8 to 21, the feed conversion rate (FCR) was significantly decreased in broilers fed MYC-supplemented diets. From days 22 to 35, BW gain (BWG) significantly increased with increasing MYC concentration. Throughout the experiment, BWG increased (linear effect, P=0.002) and FCR decreased with increasing MYC in the diet. MYC supplementation increased the digestibility of dry matter (DM) in broilers in a dose-dependent manner. Relative organ weight of the bursa of Fabricius linearly increased in broilers fed MYC-supplemented diets. The white blood cell count showed linear and quadratic increases in broilers fed increasing concentrations of MYC. The population of Lactobacillus in the excreta linearly increased P=0.033, whereas that of Escherichia coli tended to linearly decrease (P=0.064) in the MYC groups. This study provides a basis for future research on MYC as a growth promoter in broilers.

Asbestos is a class 1 carcinogen, and it has become clear that it harms the human body. Its use has been banned in many countries, and now the investigation and removal of installed asbestos has become a very important social issue. Accordingly, many social costs are expected to occur, and an efficient asbestos investigation method is required. So far, the examination of asbestos slates was performed through visual inspection. With recent advances in deep learning technology, it is possible to distinguish objects by discovering patterns in numerous training data. In this study, we propose the use of drone images and a faster region-based convolutional neural network (Faster R-CNN) to identify asbestos slates in target sites. Furthermore, the locations of detected asbestos slates were estimated using orthoimages and compiled cadastral maps. A total of 91 asbestos slates were detected in the target sites, and 91 locations were estimated from a total of 45 addresses. To verify the estimated locations, an on-site survey was conducted, and the location estimation method obtained an accuracy of 98.9%. The study findings indicate that the proposed method could be a useful research method for identifying asbestos slate roofs.

Peritoneal metastasis (PM) is one of the most frequent metastasis patterns of gastric cancer (GC), and the prognosis of patients with PM is very dismal. According to Paget’s theory, disseminated free cancer cells are seeded and survive in the abdominal cavity, adhere to the peritoneum, invade the subperitoneal tissue, and proliferate through angiogenesis. In these sequential processes, several key molecules are involved. From a therapeutic point of view, immunotherapy with chemotherapy combination has become the standard of care for advanced GC. Several clinical trials of newer immunotherapy agents are ongoing. Understanding of the molecular process of PM and the potential rationale of immunotherapy for PM treatment is necessary. Beyond understanding of the molecular aspect of PM, many studies have been conducted on the modality of treatment of PM. Notably, intraperitoneal approaches, including chemotherapy or immunotherapy, have been conducted, because systemic treatment of PM has limitations. In this study, we reviewed the molecular mechanisms and immunologic aspects of PM, and intraperitoneal approaches under investigation for treating PM.

It has been well-documented that the dietary supplementation of Bacillus subtilis could improve piglet performance. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of Bacillus subtilis C-3102 spores as a probiotic feed supplement on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, fecal score, intestinal microbiota, and excreta odor contents in weanling piglets. A total of 150 crossed ((Yorkshire × Landrace) × Duroc) weanling piglets (28-days-old), with an average initial body weight of 7.53 ± 1.23 kg, were divided into two treatment groups according to sex and initial body weight (BW) for a 6-week experiment. In each group, fifteen replicate pens consisting of five piglets per pen (three gilts and two barrows) were used in a randomized complete block design. Treatments consisted of (1) CON, a basal diet; (2) BSC, a diet of CON + 300 g Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) C-3102 spores per ton of feed. Supplementation with the B. subtilis C-3102 spores in the diet increased the BW, average daily gain (ADG), and gain-to-feed ratio (G:F) throughout the whole trial (p < 0.05). Weanling piglets that were fed B. subtilis C-3102 spores had increased dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), and energy (E) digestibility compared to the CON group (p < 0.05). Lower diarrhea scores were observed in the B. subtilis C-3102 spores group on Day 7 (p < 0.05). Taken together, our results suggest that dietary supplementation with B. subtilis C-3102 spores could benefit the BW, ADG, and G:F of weanling piglets and improve the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of the DM, CP, and E.

Approximately 400,000 patients are diagnosed with kidney cancer annually worldwide, leading to approximately 170,000 deaths. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for more than 90% of kidney cancers. The most common histological subtype is clear cell RCC, which is found in approximately 85% of metastatic RCC cases. The VHL-HIF-VEGF axis is well known; therefore, targeting VEGF has been the mainstay for managing advanced clear cell RCC. Recently, the treatment landscape for advanced clear cell RCC has changed extensively. In particular, immune checkpoint inhibitor-based treatment showed promising results in front-line treatment and became the standard of care. Herein, we review the current evidence on front-line treatment options and discuss the clinical and future perspective.

Micro wind energy harvester (MWEH) can provide eco-friendly and sustainable energy for low-power electric devices like wireless sensors. The performance of the wind turbine can be enhanced by applying a duct with a brim. In this work, the characteristic study was performed when the duct is applied to the MWEH through the computational fluid dynamics analysis of the internal and external flow of the duct. The power generation performance for various cases was evaluated using the wind tunnel test. It is confirmed that the ducted MWEH is robust to the change of the wind direction and its performance can be further enhanced by the brim.

This paper reports the theoretical findings of the new modified type of tuned liquid column ball damper (TLCBD), called a tuned liquid column ball spring damper (TLCBSD). In this new modified form, the ball inside the horizontal section of the damper is attached to the spring. Furthermore, two types of this modified version are proposed, known as a tuned liquid column ball spring sliding damper (TLCBSSD) and a tuned liquid column ball spring rolling damper (TLCBSRD). In the former, the rotational motion of the ball attached to the spring is restricted, whereas in the latter, the ball attached to the spring can translate as well as rotate. Mathematical models and optimum design parameters are formulated for both types. The performance of these new modified damper versions is assessed numerically and subjected to harmonic, seismic, and impulse loadings. The results show that the performance of the newly proposed dampers is relatively better than traditional TLCBDs in harmonic and seismic excitations. The peak response reduction soon after the impact load becomes zero is comparatively better in TLCBSDs over TLCBDs. Overall, the newly proposed passive vibration control devices performed excellently in structure response reduction over TLCBDs.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary fenugreek seed extract (FSE) supplementation on egg production, egg quality, blood profiles, cecal microflora, and excreta noxious gas emission in laying hens. A total of 384 laying hens (26-weeks old, Hyline-brown) were fed three different levels of FSE (0, 0.05, and 0.1%) in a cornsoybean diet for 6 weeks. A total of 150 crossbred weaned pigs [(Yorkshire × Landrace) × Duroc] with an average body weight of 6.75 ± 0.49 kg were used in a 6-wk trial to determine the effects of dietary supplementation of β-glucan on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and characteristics of feces (fecal score, microbiota, moisture, and pH) in weaned pigs. The corn-soybean meal based dietary treatments included: 1) antibiotic (30 ppm Tiamulin), 2) 0% β-glucan, 3) 0.1% β-glucan, 4) 0.2% β-glucan, and 5) 0.4% β-glucan. Dietary supplementation with β-glucan resulted in no significant differences in growth performance, nutrient digestibility, or characteristics of feces compared with that of Tiamulin supplementation. Pigs fed β-glucan exhibited a linearly increasing average daily gain and feed/gain ratio. Dietary supplementation of β-glucan linearly increased apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter and energy during 1–14 and 1–42 d as dietary β-glucan increased from 0.1 to 0.4%. In addition, pigs fed β-glucan had linearly decreasing coliform bacterial counts. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with β-glucan from rice bran improved growth performance, nutrient digestibility and coliform bacteria in weaned pigs, and β-glucan had the same effect as Tiamulin supplementation on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and characteristics of feces. Thus, we suggest that β-glucan from rice bran can be used as an alternative to antibiotics, and will improve productivity of weaned pigs.

Newly weaned pig encounters psychosocial, physical, and nutritional stressors simultaneously when their immune system is not fully developed. These stressors have a cumulative effect on the immune response that contributes to the post-weaning growth lag which is characterized by depression in feed intake, reduced or negative growth rates, and increased susceptibility to pathogens in the first 24 to 48 h post-weaning. Consequently, the intestinal integrity, and digestive and absorptive capacity are impaired, and there is an increase in intestinal oxidative stress. It also causes the shifts in the taxonomic and functional properties of intestinal microbiome abruptly, thereby adversely affecting the health and performance of animals. It has been suggested that the effects of weaning stress on immune functions, intestinal barrier functions, and nervous system function in early weaned pigs extends into adulthood. The inclusion of different types of feed additives into the diet have been reported to alleviate the negative effects of weaning stress. The objective of this paper was to provide an overview on how the weaning stress affects gut health and the impact it has on production efficiencies, as well as the mechanistic aspects of several feed additives applied in reducing the weaning associated gut health problems and performance inefficiencies.

This 10 wk feeding trial was conducted to determine the effect of increasing the standardised ileal digestible (SID) sulphur amino acid to lysine ratio (SAA:Lys) on performance and intestinal health parameters in growing-finishing (50–100 kg) pigs fed antibiotic-free diets. A total of 96 pigs [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc] with an average initial body weight (BW) of 52.2 ± 2.32 kg were randomly assigned to 4 dietary treatments each with 6 replicates (4 pigs per pen, 2 females and 2 males). A total of 180, 4-week-old crossbred weaning piglets ((Yorkshire × Landrace) × Duroc; 6.67 ± 1.40 kg) were used in a 42 day experiment to evaluate the effect of dietary probiotics (Lactobacillus plantarum BG0001) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, blood profile, fecal microbiota, and noxious gas emission. All pigs were randomly allotted to one of four treatment diets in a completely randomized block design. Each treatment had nine replicates with five pigs/pen (mixed sex) Designated dietary treatments were as: (1) basal diet (NC), (2) NC + 0.2% antibiotics (chlortetracycline) (PC), (3) NC + 0.1% L. plantarum BG0001 (Lactobacillus plantarum BG0001) (NC1), (4) NC + 0.2% L. plantarum BG0001 (NC2). On d 42, BW and G:F were lower (p < 0.05) in pigs fed NC diet compared with PC diet and probiotic diets. Throughout this experiment, the average daily gain increased (p < 0.05) in pigs when fed with PC and probiotic diets than the NC diet. The average daily feed intake was higher (p < 0.05) in pigs fed PC diet during day 0–7 and 22–42, and probiotic diets during day 0–7 compared with NC diet, respectively. The Lactobacillus count was increased and Escherichia coli count was decreased (p < 0.05) in the fecal microbiota of pigs fed probiotic diets, and E. coli were decreased (p < 0.05) when fed a PC diet compared with the NC diet on day 21. Moreover, the apparent total tract nutrient digestibility, blood profile, and the concentration of noxious gas emission had no negative effects by the probiotic treatments. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with L. plantarum BG0001 significantly improved the growth performance, increased fecal Lactobacillus, and decreased E. coli counts in weaning pigs.
