Abstract: International audience; General interest in solvent-free catalytic processes is driven by the development of environmentally and economically acceptable procedures. Such processes require the use of highly active and stable catalysts. This study reports on the synthesis, characterization, and kinetic evaluation of two highly active Pd catalysts supported on different carbons support, i.e., multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) and few-layer graphene (FLG). These catalysts, with similar Pd loading (∼2 wt%) and containing both Pd single atoms (PdSA) and nanoparticles (PdNP), were systematically tested for solvent-free total hydrogenation of squalene (SQE) to obtain high-purity squalane (SQA). Thanks to the unique cooperative catalysis between PdSA and PdNP involving H-spillover, the activities of both catalysts were high compared to catalysts described in the literature. Solvent-free total hydrogenation of SQE could be performed under mild conditions (120 °C, 20 bar H2, 4 h) using ultralow Pd loading (60 ppm). However, since this reduction reaction is highly exothermic (ΔHR= − 765 kJ.mol−1), heat management during the reactor operation with these highly active catalysts is crucial to avoid deactivation and thermal runaway. Under these conditions, Pd/FLG was highly active but deactivated, unlike Pd/CNT, which still has high activity, but does not deactivate. Characterizations (ICP, XPS, Raman, TPD-MS, HAADF-STEM) of the Pd/FLG catalyst before and after reaction, supported by calculations based on density functional theory, allowed us to propose a new mechanism of catalyst deactivation involving the chemical reduction of specific surface oxygen groups of the carbon support induced by H-spillover.

Abstract: International audience; Epoxy vitrimers encompass many advantages compared to traditional epoxy materials such as recyclability, repairability, and reprocessability. These properties are induced by the incorporation of dynamic reversible covalent bonds. Recently, the incorporation of aromatic disulfide bridges that are dynamic has expanded the development of new eco-friendly epoxy materials. Herein, we studied a bio-based aliphatic disulfide based on cystamine as a hardener with a vanillin-derived bio-sourced epoxy to prepare fully bio-based epoxy vitrimers. This article provides a comparative study between cystamine and an aromatic disulfide benchmark hardener issued from petrol resources. This work demonstrated that the presence of this aliphatic hardener has a significant influence not only on the reactivity, but most importantly on the resulting dynamic properties. An interesting yet counterintuitive accelerating effect of the dynamic exchanges was clearly demonstrated with only 2 to 20% of molar fraction of cystamine added to the aromatic disulfide formulation. A similar glass transition was obtained compared to the purely aromatic analogue, but relaxation times were decreased by an order of magnitude.

Abstract: International audience; Context : Flower-visiting insects depend on floral resource availability from both cultivated and semi-natural habitats in agricultural landscapes. Landscape studies exploring insect abundance mainly focus on land cover maps without considering plant species within. Highlighting the functional role of landscapes through the potential floral resources they provide is an overlooked innovative approach. Objectives : We aimed to identify traits of floral communities that are important, across several spatial scales, for explaining the abundance of flower-visiting insects. Mapping and quantifying potential floral resources according to their attractivity, accessibility and profitability in both crop and non-crop habitats was performed to gain insights into flower-vising insect requirements. Methods : We translated land-cover maps of 39 landscapes of 250 m, 500 m and 1000 m radius into potential floral resource maps, using pre-existing vegetation surveys and floral traits databases. In the centres of the landscapes, the abundance of flower-visiting insect groups (domestic and wild bees, bumblebees and hoverflies) were recorded in organic winter cereal fields. We then fitted Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) to investigate the effects of flower trait variables (pre-selected with conditional random forests) at both field and landscape scales on the abundance of each flower-visiting insect group. Results : Floral resource maps explained the abundances of flower-visiting insect groups. Small wild bees (< 1 cm) responded positively to the relative amount of attractive and accessible floral resources at 250 m. The abundance of domestic bees and bumblebees was positively correlated with the relative amount of high nectar producing plants at 1000 m. The abundance of hoverflies was positively influenced by the relative amount of actinomorphic flowers (i.e., those with radial symmetry), at 1000 m.Conclusion : Resource maps could explain flower-visiting insect abundances, identify which category of floral resources organisms require, and determine in which habitat types these resources prevail. These results open a new research area related to managing the environment by optimising floral resources for flower-visiting insect conservation and pollination maintenance.

Abstract: International audience; This work entails experimental measurement and theoretical modeling of heat transfer coefficient (HTC) for annular flow boiling in upward and downward flow configurations. The working fluid used was HFE-7000 and experimental measurements were carried out inside a 6mm sapphire tube coated externally with indium-tin-oxide (ITO) for Joule heating. The range of vapor quality, mass flux, and heat flux investigated were 0.15 − 0.7, 75–400 kg/(m2s), and 0.5 − 3.0 W/cm2, respectively. Theoretical models for predicting HTC in upward and downward flows were developed using heat-flux-dependent wall shear stress correlations and roll-wave-velocity-based interfacial damping function. It was found that interfacial damping depends on the Reynolds number of the liquid film. The proposed models predicted over 96% of the measured HTC within ±20% in both upward and downward flows and reproduced the heat flux dependence of the HTC. The models also predicted over 96% of the measured liquid film thickness within ±30% in both upward and downward flows.

Abstract: The comet assay is a versatile method to detect nuclear DNA damage in individual eukaryotic cells, from yeast to human. The types of damage detected encompass DNA strand breaks and alkali-labile sites (e.g., apurinic/apyrimidinic sites), alkylated and oxidized nucleobases, DNA-DNA crosslinks, UV-induced cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and some chemically induced DNA adducts. Depending on the specimen type, there are important modifications to the comet assay protocol to avoid the formation of additional DNA damage during the processing of samples and to ensure sufficient sensitivity to detect differences in damage levels between sample groups. Various applications of the comet assay have been validated by research groups in academia, industry and regulatory agencies, and its strengths are highlighted by the adoption of the comet assay as an in vivo test for genotoxicity in animal organs by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The present document includes a series of consensus protocols that describe the application of the comet assay to a wide variety of cell types, species and types of DNA damage, thereby demonstrating its versatility.The comet assay is commonly used to assess DNA damage. This collection of consensus protocols includes adaptations for a wide range of species and sample types, assay formats and detection of different types of DNA lesions.

Abstract: The second-order cone (SOC) is a class of simple convex cones and optimizing over them can be done more efficiently than with semidefinite programming. It is interesting both in theory and in practice to investigate which convex cones admit a representation using SOCs, given that they have a strong expressive ability. In this paper, we prove constructively that the cone of sums of nonnegative circuits (SONC) admits a SOC representation. Based on this, we give a new algorithm for unconstrained polynomial optimization via SOC programming. We also provide a hybrid numeric-symbolic scheme which combines the numerical procedure with a rounding-projection algorithm to obtain exact nonnegativity certificates. Abstract: International audience; The control of biofouling is required to improve membranes performances for water filtration. In this context, developing bioinspired approaches to modify membranes and give them antifouling properties is an interesting alternative. In this study, we elaborated new anti-biofouling membranes by coating them with vanillin, a natural bioactive molecule acting as a Quorum Sensing Inhibitor (QSI). First, the adsorption of vanillin by filtration was optimized to obtain homogeneous surface modifications. The modified membranes were then characterized in terms of physical-chemical properties: the results showed that they were more hydrophobic and exhibited a 14% decrease in pure water flux. Then, their anti-fouling properties were evaluated using complementary multiscale characterization methodologies; AFM single-cell experiments showed that vanillin adsorption had an effect on both the probability of bacterial cells to adhere to the surface, and on the force of adhesion. Direct EFM and SEM observation and adhesion assays further confirmed the effect of vanillin-modified membranes at the population-scale which showed a decrease in the bacterial coverage rate up to 50%. Altogether, it confirms the multifunctionality of vanillin-coated membranes against biofouling: reduction of bacterial initial adhesion by changing the membranes surface properties and reduction of biofilm formation by quorum sensing inhibition

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, the static and fatigue behaviors under compression of Multi-Directional (MD) Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) laminates with impact damage were investigated. After low-velocity impact performed on three 24-ply Quasi-Isotropic Quasi-Homogeneous (QIQH) laminates having different stacking sequences, the influence of the distribution of interfaces between two plies on the compression after impact and post-impact compression fatigue properties was evaluated. The damages on the surfaces and internal delamination were accessed via visual and optical observation and ultrasonic C-scan inspection. The thermographic approach, which has been developed and validated on numerous non-impacted composite materials, was applied for the rapid determination of the fatigue limit together with the S-N curves of post-impact fatigue specimens.Experimental results showed that with 5 J impact energy, the three stacking sequences gave similar impact results. The residual strengths measured by compression after impact tests were also similar to each other, so did the global damage modes. The determined fatigue limits of impacted specimens of different stacking sequences were nearly identical and the predicted S-N curves were also close to each other despite the exact crack propagation and orientation were not the same, under both compressive static and cyclic loads.

Abstract: International audience; Reaching high selectivity at high conversion and high rate in the industrially important selective hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes is a challenging task. Among current approaches reported in the literature, high selectivity towards the unsaturated alcohol or saturated aldehyde is generally achieved at the expense of activity. The use of bimetallic systems can lead either to selectivity or to activity enhancement, but generally not to both. Herein, we show that, for cinnamaldehyde hydrogenation, combining Ni nanoparticles (NiNP) and Ru single atoms (RuSA) on CNTs allows improvement of the hydrocinnamaldehyde selectivity, while obtaining a remarkable activity. The STY of RuSA-NiNP/CNT is approximately 60 times higher than that of the RuSA/CNT and 10 times higher than that of the NiNP/CNT. Importantly, the resulting catalyst shows 94% selectivity at 99% conversion and a good stability in flow. Insights into the cooperative “cocktail”-type catalysis between NiNP and RuSA were revealed from density functional theory calculations.

Abstract: International audience; The design of a pipe flow boiling experiment for the International Space Station is proposed, taking into account typical weight, power consumption and size constraints. The effect of singularities such as elbows upstream the test section is investigated. Velocity profiles downstream two elbows, measured by Particle Image Velocimetry are in good agreement with numerical simulation and allow to determine a specific distance (decay length) downstream the elbows for which the velocity profile recover its axisymmetry. From these results a breadboard is designed and tested in parabolic flights. Care has been taken to generate boiling downstream the decay length. Two-phase bubbly flow is observed with 2 perpendicular high-speed cameras in the test section and a symmetry of the bubble distribution in the pipe is verified for different gravity conditions when the bubbles are created after the decay length.

Abstract: Van der Waals magnetic materials are building blocks for novel kinds of spintronic devices and playgrounds for exploring collective magnetic phenomena down to the two-dimensional limit. Chromium-tellurium compounds are relevant in this perspective. In particular, the 1$T$ phase of CrTe$_2$ has been argued to have a Curie temperature above 300~K, a rare and desirable property in the class of lamellar materials, making it a candidate for practical applications. However, recent literature reveals a strong variability in the reported properties, including magnetic ones. Using electron microscopy, diffraction and spectroscopy techniques, together with local and macroscopic magnetometry approaches, our work sheds new light on the structural, chemical and magnetic properties of bulk 1$T$-CrTe$_2$ exfoliated in the form of flakes having a thickness ranging from few to several tens of nanometers. We unambiguously establish that 1$T$-CrTe$_2$ flakes are ferromagnetic above room temperature, have an in-plane easy axis of magnetization, low coercivity, and we confirm that their Raman spectroscopy signatures are two modes, $E_{2\text{g}}$ (103.5~cm$^{-1}$) and $A_{1\text{g}}$ (136.5~cm$^{-1}$). We also prove that thermal annealing causes a phase transformation to monoclinic Cr$_5$Te$_8$ and, to a lesser extent, to trigonal Cr$_5$Te$_8$. In sharp contrast with 1$T$-CrTe$_2$, none of these compounds have a Curie temperature above room temperature, and they both have perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Our findings reconcile the apparently conflicting reports in the literature and open opportunities for phase-engineered magnetic properties.

Abstract: International audience; Hypothesis: Due to their unique quantum yield and photostability performances, quantum nanoplatelets are very promising building blocks for future generations of displays. The directed assembly of such colloidal nano-objects in the shape of micro-pixels is thus the next mandatory step to reach this goal. Selectively trapping them on electrostatically charged patterns by nanoxerography could be a versatile and appealing strategy but requires a full understanding of the assembly mechanisms in order to make the most of their integration.Experiments: We propose an experimental platform based on a smart resealable microfluidic chip coupled to an inverted optical fluorescence microscope and a high-speed camera for in situ access of such assembly mechanisms, using CdSe/CdZnS quantum nanoplatelets as model nano-objects. The photoluminescence signal of the nanoplatelet patterns is thus recorded in real time during their assembly and data extracted after image processing.Findings: The coupling of experimental results and numerical simulations evidences the main role of advection at the origin of this directed nanoparticle trapping. Deep understanding of the involved mechanisms and tuning of experimental parameters allow to make high resolution quantum nanoplatelet based micro-pixels with a fine control of their lateral and vertical dimensions.

Abstract: International audience; Because of the formation of specific antibodies to poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) leading to life-threatening side effects, there is an increasing need to develop alternatives to treatments and diagnostic methods based on PEGylated copolymers. Block copolymers comprising a poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) segment can be used for the design of such vectors without any PEG block. As an example, a poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PAA-b-PVP) copolymer with controlled composition and molar mass is synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Mixing this copolymer with lanthanide cations (Gd3+, Eu3+, Y3+) leads to the formation of hybrid polyion complexes with increased stability, preventing the lanthanide cytotoxicity and in vitro cell penetration. These new nanocarriers exhibit enhanced T1 MRI contrast, when intravenously administered into mice. No leaching of gadolinium ions is detected from such hybrid complexes.

Abstract: This article introduces new multiplicative updates for nonnegative matrix factorization with the $\beta$-divergence and sparse regularization of one of the two factors (say, the activation matrix). It is well known that the norm of the other factor (the dictionary matrix) needs to be controlled in order to avoid an ill-posed formulation. Standard practice consists in constraining the columns of the dictionary to have unit norm, which leads to a nontrivial optimization problem. Our approach leverages a reparametrization of the original problem into the optimization of an equivalent scale-invariant objective function. From there, we derive block-descent majorization-minimization algorithms that result in simple multiplicative updates for either $\ell_{1}$-regularization or the more "aggressive" log-regularization. In contrast with other state-of-the-art methods, our algorithms are universal in the sense that they can be applied to any $\beta$-divergence (i.e., any value of $\beta$) and that they come with convergence guarantees. We report numerical comparisons with existing heuristic and Lagrangian methods using various datasets: face images, an audio spectrogram, hyperspectral data, and song play counts. We show that our methods obtain solutions of similar quality at convergence (similar objective values) but with significantly reduced CPU times.

Abstract: International audience; The supramolecular self-assembly of s-indacene-1,3,5,7(2H,6H)-tetrone on the Cu(111) surface was investigated under ultrahigh vacuum by room-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy supported by theoretical modelling based on density functional theory. In total, six different phases were found, driven by hydrogen bonding, metal ligand coordination or covalent coupling. Host–guest interactions allowed for the accommodation of molecular or metal clusters inside the open nanoporous patterns. In one phase, molecular trapping was stochastically observed inside the large periodic nanopores created inside the supramolecular network. The three metal–organic networks observed resulted in the creation of different kinds of regular arrays of isolated metal adatoms or adatom clusters with a lattice period larger than 1 nm.

Abstract: International audience; Immediately following the use of aluminium alloys, particularly Duralumin, in the construction of aircraft, protective coatings with anti-corrosion properties were developed. Among the numerous solutions to prevent corrosion, the most widely employed materials were organic primers containing chromates. This paper reports the study of the corrosion inhibitive compounds (chromates) used by aircraft manufacturers during World War II. More specifically, we have identified the nature of the compounds and assessed their current efficiency. Our analyses on samples collected from three different wrecks (French and German) excavated on terrestrial sites reveal that the primer contained either zinc tetroxychromate or lead chromate. Using XANES to study the chromium oxidation states elucidated the different phenomena taking place during the aging of the paint primer. We found that the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) species occurred either within the primer or at the interface of the primer with the Al alloy. This is believed to be due to alteration of the paint layer and its long exposure to the natural environment. However, even after 80 years, Cr(VI) is still present in the primers of these archaeological parts. Although a little altered, the chromate compound can still provide a source of inhibitor, thus maintaining the protection of the alloys.

Abstract: We prove that every semidefinite moment relaxation of a polynomial optimization problem (POP) with a ball constraint can be reformulated as a semidefinite program involving a matrix with constant trace property (CTP). As a result such moment relaxations can be solved efficiently by first-order methods that exploit CTP, e.g., the conditional gradient-based augmented Lagrangian method. We also extend this CTP-exploiting framework to large-scale POPs with different sparsity structures. Abstract: Background Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are at the origin of tumour initiation and progression in gastric adenocarcinoma (GC). However, markers of metastasis-initiating cells remain unidentified in GC. In this study, we characterized CD44 variants expressed in GC and evaluated the tumorigenic and metastatic properties of CD44v3+ cells and their clinical significance in GC patients. Methods Using GC cell lines and patient-derived xenografts, we evaluated CD44+ and CD44v3+ GC cells molecular signature and their tumorigenic, chemoresistance, invasive and metastatic properties, and expression in patients-derived tissues. Results CD44v3+ cells, which represented a subpopulation of CD44+ cells, were detected in advanced preneoplastic lesions and presented CSCs chemoresistance and tumorigenic properties in vitro and in vivo. Molecular and functional analyses revealed two subpopulations of gastric CSCs: CD44v3+ CSCs with an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-like signature, and CD44+/v3– CSCs with an epithelial-like signature; both were tumorigenic but CD44v3+ cells showed higher invasive and metastatic properties in vivo. CD44v3+ cells detected in the primary tumours of GC patients were associated with a worse prognosis. Conclusion CD44v3 is a marker of a subpopulation of CSCs with metastatic properties in GC. The identification of metastasis-initiating cells in GC represents a major advance for further development of anti-metastatic therapeutic strategies.

Abstract: Cyclobutadienyl complexes of the f-elements are a relatively new yet poorly understood class of sandwich and half-sandwich organometallic compounds. We now describe cyclobutadienyl transfer reactions of the magnesium reagent [(η4-Cb'''')Mg(THF)3] (1), where Cb'''' is tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)cyclobutadienyl, toward thorium(IV) and uranium(IV) tetrachlorides. The 1:1 stoichiometric reactions between 1 and AnCl4 proceed with intact transfer of Cb'''' to give the half-sandwich complexes [(η4-Cb'''')AnCl(μ-Cl)3Mg(THF)3] (An = Th, 2; An = U, 3). Using a 2:1 reaction stoichiometry produces [Mg2Cl3(THF)6][(η4-Cb'''')An(η3-C4H(SiMe3)3-κ-(CH2SiMe2)(Cl)] (An = Th, [Mg2Cl3(THF)6][4]; An = U [Mg2Cl3(THF)6][5]), in which one Cb'''' ligand has undergone cyclometalation of a trimethylsilyl group, resulting in the formation of an An–C σ-bond, protonation of the four-membered ring, and an η3-allylic interaction with the actinide. Complex solution-phase dynamics are observed with multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for both sandwich complexes. A computational analysis of the reaction mechanism leading to the formation of 4 and 5 indicates that the cyclobutadienyl ligands undergo C–H activation across the actinide center.

Abstract: International audience; Ligands play a key role in controlling activity of organometallic complexes so that development of new ligands to overcome the challenge is the main topic of modern chemistry. The first example of 1,1-hydride migratory insertion and intramolecular redox reaction has been realized in this work by applying a new ligand in rare-earth metal chemistry. The novel rare-earth metal complexes LMesRECH2TMS(THF) (RE = Y (1a), Dy (1b), Er (1c), Yb (1d), LMes = 1-(3-(2,6-iPr2C6H3N=CH)C8H4N)-CH2CH2-3-(2-CH2—4,6-Me2C6H2)-(N(CH)2NC), THF = tetrahydrofuran) bearing a ligand with imino, indolyl, NHC (N-heterocyclic carbene) multiple functionalities were synthesized and characterized. Treatment of complexes 1 with silanes (PhSiH3 or PhSiH2Me or PhSiD3) selectively produced the unprecedented 1,1-hydride (or deuterated H) migratory insertion of the indolyl moiety of the novel unsymmetrical dinuclear rare-earth metal complexes 2. The complex 2a reacts with Ph2C-O to give the selective C-O double bond insertion to the RE-Co-methylene-Mes bond product 3a which further reacts with another Ph2C-O (or DMAP, 4-N, N-dimethylaminopyridine) affording the novel μ-η2:η3-dianionic 3-iminoindolyl dinuclear rare-earth metal complex 4a. The latter is formed through an unusual intramolecular redox reaction (through electron migration from the 2-carbanion of the indolyl ring to the imino motif) resulting in the re-aromatization of the indolyl ring.

Abstract: Biocompatibility of nanoparticles is the most essential factor in their use in clinical applications. In this study, hyperbranched spermine (HS), hyperbranched spermine-polyethylene glycol-folic acid (HSPF), and hyperbranched spermine-polyethylene glycol-glucose (HSPG) were synthesized for DNA protection and gene delivery to breast cancer cells. The synthesis of HSPG and HSPF was confirmed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) spectroscopy. The HS/DNA, HSPF/DNA, HSPG/DNA, and hyperbranched spermine-polyethylene glycol-folic acid/glucose/DNA (HSPFG/DNA) nanoparticles were prepared by combining different concentrations of HS, HSPF, and HSPG with the same amount of DNA. The ability of HS, HSPF, and HSPG to interact with DNA and protect it against plasm digestion was evaluated using agarose gel. Moreover, in vivo and in vitro biocompatibility of HSPF/DNA, HSPG/DNA, and HSPFG/DNA was investigated using MTT assay and calculating weight change and survival ratio of BALB/c mice, respectively. The results of agarose gel electrophoresis showed that HS, HSPF, and HSPG have the high ability to neutralize the negative charge of DNA and protect it against plasma degradation. The results of in vivo cytotoxicity assay revealed that the HSPF/DNA, HSPG/DNA, and HSPFG/DNA nanoparticles have good biocompatibility on female BALB/c mice. In vitro and in vivo transfection assays revealed that functionalization of the surface of HS using polyethylene glycol-folic acid (HSPF) and polyethylene glycol-glucose (HSPG) significantly increases gene delivery efficiency in vitro and in vivo. These results also showed that gene transfer using both HSPF and HSPG copolymers increases gene transfer efficiency compared to when only one of them is used. The HSPFG/DNA nanoparticles have a high potential for use in therapeutic applications because of their excellent biocompatibility and high gene transfer efficiency to breast cancer tissue.

Abstract: International audience; Early life is a critical period where gut ecosystem and functions are being established with significant impact on health. For regulatory, technical, and cost reasons, in vitro gut models can be used as a relevant alternative to in vivo assays. An exhaustive literature review was conducted to adapt the Mucosal Artificial Colon (M-ARCOL) to specific physicochemical (pH, transit time, and nutritional composition of ileal effluents) and microbial parameters from toddlers in the age range of 6 months-3 years, resulting in the Tm-ARCOL. In vitro fermentations were performed to validate this newly developed colonic model compared to in vivo toddler data. Results were also compared to those obtained with the classical adult configuration. Fecal samples from 5 toddlers and 4 adults were used to inoculate bioreactors, and continuous fermentations were performed for 8 days. Gut microbiota structure (lumen and mucus-associated microbiota) and functions (gas and short-chain fatty acids) were monitored. Clearly distinct microbial signatures were obtained between the two in vitro conditions, with lower α-diversity indices and higher abundances of infant-related microbial populations (e.g., Bifidobacteriaceae, Enterobacteriaceae) in toddler versus adult conditions. In accordance with in vivo data, methane was found only in adult bioreactors, while higher percentage of acetate but lower proportions of propionate and butyrate was measured in toddlers compared to adults. This new in vitro model will provide a powerful platform for gut microbiome mechanistic studies in a pediatric context, both in nutritional- (e.g., nutrients, probiotics, prebiotics) and health-related (e.g., drugs, enteric pathogens) studies. KEY POINTS: • Development of a novel in vitro colonic model recapitulating the toddler environment. • Specific toddler versus adult digestive conditions are preserved in vitro. • The new model provides a powerful platform for microbiome mechanistic studies.

Abstract: International audience; The first effective synthetic approach to naphthofuroquinones via a reaction involving lawsone, various aldehydes, and three isocyanides under microwave irradiation afforded derivatives in moderate to good yields. In addition, for less-reactive aldehydes, two naphtho-enaminodione quinones were obtained for the first time, as result of condensation between lawsone and isocyanides. X-ray structure determination for 9 and 2D-NMR spectra of 28 confirmed the obtained structures. All compounds were evaluated for their anti-infectious activities against Plasmodium falciparum, Leishmania donovani, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Among the naphthofuroquinone series, 17 exhibited comparatively the best activity against P. falciparum (IC50 = 2.5 μM) and M. tuberculosis (MIC = 9 μM) with better (P. falciparum) or equivalent (M. tuberculosis) values to already-known naphthofuroquinone compounds. Among the two naphtho-enaminodione quinones, 28 exhibited a moderate activity against P. falciparum with a good selectivity index (SI > 36) while also a very high potency against L. donovani (IC50 = 3.5 μM and SI > 28), rendering it very competitive to the reference drug miltefosine. Abstract: International audience; Tricarbonylrhenium(I) complexes that incorporate a chloride ligand are promising photoluminescent materials, but those incorporating a bromide or iodide ligand have received very little attention regarding their solid-state properties. In this work, three rhenium(I) complexes differing only by the nature of their halide ligand (X = Cl, Br, and I) were compared. They are based on a fac-[ReX(CO)3(N^N)] framework where the N^N bidentate ligand is a 3-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole unit functionalized by an appended phenyl group. DFT calculations showed that the character of the lowest energy transitions progressively changes from Re → N^N ligand (MLCT) to X → N^N ligand (XLCT) when increasing the size of the halogen atom. Regarding the electrochemical behavior, the chloride and bromide complexes 1-Cl and 1-Br were similar, while the iodide complex 1-I exhibited a strikingly different electrochemical signature in oxidation. From a spectroscopic viewpoint, all three complexes emitted weak red–orange phosphorescence in dichloromethane solution. However, in the solid state, marked differences appeared. Not only was 1-Cl a good emitter of yellow light, but it had strong solid-state luminescence enhancement (SLE) properties. In comparison, 1-Br and 1-I were less emissive and they showed better mechanoresponsive luminescence (MRL) properties, probably related to a loose molecular arrangement in the crystal packing and to the opening of vibrational non-radiative deactivation pathways. This study highlights for the first time how the nature of the halide ligand in this type of complex allows fine tuning of the solid-state optical properties, for potential applications either in bio-imaging or in the field of MRL-active materials.

Abstract: International audience; Lock-in and path-dependency are well-known concepts in economics dealing with unbalanced development of alternative options. Lock-in was studied in various sectors, considering production or consumption sides. Lock-in in academic research went little addressed. Yet, science develops through knowledge accumulation and cross-fertilisation of research topics, that could lead to similar phenomena when some topics do not sufficiently benefit from accumulation mechanisms, reducing innovation opportunities from the concerned field consequently. We introduce an original method to explore these phenomena by comparing topic trajectories in research fields according to strong or weak accumulative processes over time. We combine the concepts of ‘niche’ and ‘mainstream’ from transition studies with scientometric tools to revisit Callon’s strategic diagram with a diachronic perspective of topic clusters over time. Considering the trajectories of semantic clusters, derived from titles and authors’ keywords extracted from scholarly publications in the Web of Science, we applied our method to two competing research fields in food sciences and technology related to pulses and soya over the last 60 years worldwide. These highly interesting species for the sustainability of agrifood systems experienced unbalanced development and thus is under-debated. Our analysis confirms that food research for soya was more dynamic than for pulses: soya topic clusters revealed a stronger accumulative research path by cumulating mainstream positions while pulses research did not meet the same success. This attempt to unpack research lock-in for evaluating the competition dynamics of scientific fields over time calls for future works, by strengthening the method and testing it on other research fields.

Abstract: International audience; To explain irradiation creep, several mechanisms have been proposed. Some are based on the effect of stress on either nucleation or growth of dislocation loops. To investigate these mechanisms in aluminum we combine in-situ transmission electron microscope irradiation under stress and two simulation approaches (object kinetic Monte-Carlo, molecular dynamics Frenkel pair accumulation). We observe the selectivity of Frank loop variants under electron irradiation and applied stress. When the stress is turned on after loop formation, there is no loop variant selectivity, suggesting the absence of preferential absorption on already formed loops. Object kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations, including the effect of stress on the diffusion of point defects, show no growth rate difference between loop variants. Frenkel pair accumulation simulations exhibit variant selectivity of nucleated loops. This shows that loop selectivity is due to preferential nucleation of well oriented loops under stress and not to differential growth of loops.

Abstract: Although transcription factor CCAAT-enhancer binding protein α (C/EBPα) is critical for normal and leukemic differentiation, its role in cell and metabolic homeostasis is largely unknown in cancer. Here, multiomics analyses uncovered a coordinated activation of C/EBPα and Fms-like tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) that increased lipid anabolism in vivo and in patients with FLT3-mutant acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Mechanistically, C/EBPα regulated the fatty acid synthase (FASN)–stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) axis to promote fatty acid (FA) biosynthesis and desaturation. We further demonstrated that FLT3 or C/EBPα inactivation decreased monounsaturated FA incorporation to membrane phospholipids through SCD downregulation. Consequently, SCD inhibition enhanced susceptibility to lipid redox stress that was exploited by combining FLT3 and glutathione peroxidase 4 inhibition to trigger lipid oxidative stress, enhancing ferroptotic death of FLT3-mutant AML cells. Altogether, our study reveals a C/EBPα function in lipid homeostasis and adaptation to redox stress, and a previously unreported vulnerability of FLT3-mutant AML to ferroptosis with promising therapeutic application. Significance: FLT3 mutations are found in 30% of AML cases and are actionable by tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Here, we discovered that C/EBPα regulates FA biosynthesis and protection from lipid redox stress downstream mutant-FLT3 signaling, which confers a vulnerability to ferroptosis upon FLT3 inhibition with therapeutic potential in AML. Abstract: International audience; Introduction Absolute quantification of individual metabolites in complex biological samples is crucial in targeted metabolomic profiling. Objectives An inter-laboratory test was performed to evaluate the impact of the NMR software, peak-area determination method (integration vs. deconvolution) and operator on quantification trueness and precision. Methods A synthetic urine containing 32 compounds was prepared. One site prepared the urine and calibration samples, and performed NMR acquisition. NMR spectra were acquired with two pulse sequences including water suppression used in routine analyses. The pre-processed spectra were sent to the other sites where each operator quantified the metabolites using internal referencing or external calibration, and his/her favourite in-house, open-access or commercial NMR tool. Results For 1D NMR measurements with solvent presaturation during the recovery delay (zgpr), 20 metabolites were successfully quantified by all processing strategies. Some metabolites could not be quantified by some methods. For internal referencing with TSP, only one half of the metabolites were quantified with a trueness below 5%. With peak integration and external calibration, about 90% of the metabolites were quantified with a trueness below 5%. The NMRProcFlow integration module allowed the quantification of several additional metabolites. The number of quantified metabolites and quantification trueness improved for some metabolites with deconvolution tools. Trueness and precision were not significantly different between zgpr- and NOESYpr-based spectra for about 70% of the variables. Conclusion External calibration performed better than TSP internal referencing. Inter-laboratory tests are useful when choosing to better rationalize the choice of quantification tools for NMR-based metabolomic profiling and confirm the value of spectra deconvolution tools.

Abstract: National audience; RESUME - Dans les études de fiabilité, l'instabilité de la tension de seuil (Vth) est problématique lorsque V th est utilisé comme indicateur car elle masque une éventuelle dérive due au vieillissement réel du composant. Cette instabilité est observée lors des mesures de caractérisation électrique. Elle est liée à "l'historique de polarisation" du transistor qui peut introduire un phénomène de piégeage/dépiégeage de porteurs dans différentes couches de la structure. De nouvelles méthodes sont donc nécessaires pour surmonter ces problèmes d'instabilité liés au piégeage afin de surveiller avec précision le vieillissement des transistors en GaN. Pour résoudre le problème de répétabilité de la mesure de la tension de seuil, nous avons étudié son instabilité sur les transistors GaN. Une étape de préconditionnement appliquée juste avant la mesure réelle de Vth a été étudiée. La méthode de préconditionnement proposée est basée sur l'application d'une polarisation VGS(t) dédiée sur l'électrode de grille qui conduit à une valeur stable et répétable de Vth. Les mécanismes permettant la stabilité observée de Vth sont identifiés grâce à l'analyse de la mesure de fuite de drain après la mesure préconditionnée de Vth. La modification de la courbe de fuite démontre le rôle de l'injection de trous dans la structure. La méthode de mesure préconditionnée de Vth est proposée comme mesure complémentaire pour suivre correctement le vieillissement du p-GaN HEMT dans les futures études de fiabilité.

Abstract: International audience; Whereas breast milk is the gold standard, most infants are at least partly formula-fed.The aim of the present study was to investigate the short- and long-term effects of the addition of dairy lipids (DL) in infant formulas as an alternative to plant lipid-based infant formula, on gut microbiota composition and activity, and on intestinal immune and barrier functions, and of a probiotic, Lactobacillus fermentum (Lf), on the same parameters.Piglets received from postnatal day (PND) 2 to 28 a balanced formula containing either: only plant lipids (PL), a half-half mixture of PL and DL (DL), or a half-half mixture of PL and DL supplemented with Lf (DL+Lf). Pigs were subsequently fed a standard diet for 1 month and then challenged with a high-fat, high-sucrose diet for 3 months until PDN140. Dietary-induced changes in gut microbiota composition were observed at both PDN28 and PDN140, mainly within Firmicutes (Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcaceae and Lactobacillaceae families) and Bacteroidetes (Prevotellaceae, Bacteroidaceae and Bacteroidales S24-7 group families) phyla. At PND28, twenty fecal metabolites (such as valerate, butyrate, amino acids, glucose) discriminated the three groups. DL and DL+Lf reinforced tight junction protein expressions in colon, with moderate changes in epithelial barrier permeability. At PND140, DL+Lf decreased the inflammation risk through decreased ileal pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion and increased ileal expression of genes encoding tight junction proteins. A slight but persisting and coherent effect of probiotic Lf on gut microbiota composition was observed between PND28 and PND140, even after discontinuation of its intake. Correlations between gut microbiota composition and intestinal physiology confirmed the involvement of gut microbiota in such processes.In conclusion, the addition of DL in infant formula changed the microbial signature and gut physiology in infants. The addition of Lf enhanced the beneficial effects observed in the long term. The addition of DL±Lf appears to be safe.

Abstract: In this article, the historical study from Carathéodory-Zermelo about computing the quickest nautical path is generalized to Zermelo navigation problems on surfaces of revolution, in the frame of geometric optimal control. Using the Maximum Principle, we present two methods dedicated to analyze the geodesic flow and to compute the conjugate and cut loci. We apply these calculations to investigate case studies related to applications in hydrodynamics, space mechanics and geometry., Dans cet article, on généralise l’étude historique de Carathéodory-Zermelo sur le calcul du chemin nautique le plus rapide, aux problèmes de navigation de Zermelo sur des surfaces de révolution dans le cadre du contrôle optimal géométrique. En utilisant le Principe du Maximum, on présente deux méthodes permettant d’analyser le flot géodésique et de calculer les lieux conjugués et de coupure en lien avec l’optimalité locale et globale des trajectoires. Ces calculs sont ensuite appliqués à des cas d’études liés à des applications en hydrodynamique, en mécanique spatiale et en géométrie.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, a zero-crossings based method is proposed to improve the displacement sensing performance of nonuniform sampling (NUS) theory based use of optical feedback interferometry (OFI) under moderate optical feedback regime. The incorporation of zero-crossings as phase quantization levels allows doubling the samples for subsequent interpolation, without using any dithering scheme. When compared to the simple dither-free NUS method, the proposed method yields an overall improvement in RMS error over a wide range of target motion amplitudes and frequencies, with maximum improvement at low amplitudes. Experimentally, an improvement of up to 87% is obtained in precision as compared to simple NUS system for an OFI sensor with laser wavelength of 785 nm.

Abstract: International audience; This paper aims at demonstrating the relevance of a new design perimeter for power switching cells through a monolithic vertical integration approach on a multi-terminal power chip with Wide-Band Gap material such as 4H silicon carbide (SiC). Multi-terminal monolithic architectures making use quasi-only of vertical unipolar switch (VDMOS) and JBS diode architecture within the context of a 600V/10A full integration of switching cells on 4H-SiC chips are proposed and validated through Sentaurus 2D numerical simulations. The key method to etch and to fill the metallic via needed to connect the VDMOS and the JBS from top to back side of the SiC wafer is presented. The first optimization of the electroplating process resulted in a Ni metal layer of about 5µm thick.

The corresponding C(1)-symmetric group 4 ansa-metallocene complexes (M = Zr, Hf), namely, {Me(2)Si(Me(4)Cp)(Ind)}ZrCl(2) (2a-Zr), {Me(2)Si(Me(4)Cp)(2-Me,4-Ph-Ind)}MCl(2) (2b-M), {Me(2)Si(Me(4)Cp)(2-Me,4-Ph,6-tBu-Ind)}ZrCl(2) (2c-Zr), {Me(2)Si(Me(4)Cp)(2-Me,4-Ph,5-OMe,6-tBu-Ind)}MCl(2) (2d-M), {Me(2)Si(Me(4)Cp)(2-R’,4-(3’,5’-tBu(2),4’-OMe-C(6)H(2)),5-OMe,6-tBu-Ind)}ZrCl(2), R’ = Me (2e-Zr), R’ = Et (2f-Zr), {Me(2)Si(2,5-Ph(2)-3,4-Me(2)-Cp)(2-Me,4-(3’,5’-tBu(2),4’-OMe-C(6)H(2)),5-OMe,6-tBu-Ind)}ZrCl(2) (2g-Zr), {Me(2)Si(Me(4)Cp)(2-Me,4-(3’,6’-tBu(2)-carbazol-4’-yl)-Ind)}ZrCl(2) (2h-Zr), {Me(2)Si(2,5-Me(2),3,4-iPr(2)-Cp)(2-Me,4-Ph-Ind)}ZrCl(2) (2i-Zr), {Me(2)Si(2,5-Me(2),3,4-iPr(2)-Cp)(2-Me,4-Ph,6-tBu-Ind)}ZrCl(2) (2j-Zr) and {Me(2)Si(Me(4)Cp)(2-Me-4,5-[a]anthracene-Ind)}MCl(2) (2k-Zr) were synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The solid-state molecular structures of 2b-Zr, 2d-Zr, 2e-Zr, 2f-Zr, 2j-Zr and 2k-Zr were determined by X-ray crystallography. The zirconocene complexes, once activated with MAO in toluene solution, exhibited propylene polymerization activities at 60 °C up to 161 000 kg(PP) mol(Zr)(-1) h(-1), affording highly isotactic polypropylenes (iPP) with [m](4) up to 96.5% and T(m) up to 157 °C. Also, metallocene complexes 2b-e-Zr were supported on SiO(2)-MAO and evaluated in slurry bulk propylene polymerization at 70 °C, producing iPPs with [m](4) = 91.7-96.6 mol% and low regiodefects (0.2-0.3 mol%) content, with productivities up to 636 000 kg(PP) mol(Zr)(-1) h(-1). DFT calculations allowed rationalizing a polymerization reaction mechanism occurring through "chain-stationary" enchainment with preference for 1,2-insertions.

Abstract: International audience; Pre-oxidation tests were performed on a commercially pure titanium (CP-40) at 700 °C for 100 h under air in order to introduce a gradient of oxygen content within the metal, also called the oxygen-rich layer (ORL). The chemical profile of oxygen was measured using microprobe analyses (EPMA) on cross-sectional observations. Large but highly resolved nanoindentation maps using continuous stiffness measurement techniques were performed on the specimen cross-section to document the local mechanical response within the oxygen-rich layer (ORL) as a function of the oxygen content and the grain orientation using statistical and multi-modal analyses. The oxygen was found to greatly increase the hardness and elastic modulus in titanium and was correlated to orientation of the c axis of the α-Ti.

Abstract: International audience; Wire Direct Energy Deposition (WDED) processes enable near-net-shape manufacturing with a high deposition rate and improved size capabilities as compared to powder-based additive manufacturing (AM) processes. They can be classified according to the employed heat source: a beam, either laser for Wire Laser AM (WLAM) or electron for Electron Beam AM (EBAM), or an arc welding for Wire Arc AM (WAAM). Prior studies have enabled us to limit the introduction of defects and contamination issues using WDED technologies. However, the process-inherited heterogeneous microstructures, including strong crystallographic textures, and consequences on anisotropy and variability in mechanical properties are still not fully understood. In particular, Heat Affected Zones (HAZ) are clearly observed in the material and their features are strongly related to the heat source and the scanning strategy. These HAZ are known to produce a highly heterogeneous microstructure at the millimetre scale with a gradient of α-lath thickness and clusters of crystallographic variants. While these areas are prone to a heterogeneous strain distribution, the relation with macroscopic ductility remains unclear for WDED processes. In the present work, deformation heterogeneity was studied in relation to microstructure to clarify the role of the HAZ-induced strain localization on tensile anisotropy. Digital image correlation (DIC) combined with electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) was employed for this purpose. In particular, spatial variations in lamella thickness and implications of Burgers Orientation Relationships were considered to understand the heterogeneous development of slip activity.

Abstract: International audience; Le présent travail vise à développer des méthodologies permettant d'évaluer les propriétés en fatigue de composites polymères MultiDirectionnels (MD) renforcés par des fibres de carbone (CFRP) en un temps court à partir de l'analyse des données thermographiques mesurées par une caméra infrarouge. Une nouvelle méthode de détermination de la limite de fatigue a été proposée pour surmonter les limites des méthodes graphiques proposées par Risitano et al. [1] et Luong et al. [2]. Un modèle de prédiction de la durée de vie a été développé afin de tracer les courbes S-N des matériaux composites MD CFRP avec une précision satisfaisante. La méthode a été appliquée avec succès non seulement aux stratifiés sollicités en traction cyclique, mais également en compression cyclique et en compression cyclique après impact. Les résultats de ce travail sont intéressants d’un point de vue industriel car avec l'utilisation des méthodologies proposées, la durée des essais de fatigue est considérablement réduite (gain de temps d’au moins 50 fois) et les propriétés de fatigue des composites peuvent être obtenues quels que soient la séquence d'empilement et le mode de chargement.

Abstract: International audience; The ability of pyrolysis gas chromatographysingle bondmass spectrometry to quantify microplastics has been demonstrated; this study aims to provide a robust method using tandem mass spectrometry in order to gain in sensitivity and selectivity. The preparation of homogeneous and repeatable solid standards allowed us to perform an external calibration for six polymers in the nanogram range. Relevant indicator compounds were selected for each targeted polymer, and multiple reaction monitoring optimization was undertaken. The linearity, standard deviation and overall sensitivity were examined. After optimization, the detection limit was 15–70 ng according to the polymer. Interferences between polymers were examined, and we demonstrated that tandem mass spectrometry was necessary for the unequivocal detection of some polymers such as polyethylene and polypropylene. The method was applied to analyze the plastic particle content in bottled water. Only polyethylene terephthalate chemical compound was quantified at 42 ng.L-1. For future development, the use of internal standards will increase the method precision. It will also be important to better understand the interferences with the matrix in complex samples and the potential impact of weathering on the polymer pyrolytic response.

Abstract: International audience; A method for the reciprocal space treatment of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HR-STEM) images has been developed. Named “Absolute strain” (AbStrain), it allows for quantification and mapping of interplanar distances and angles, displacement fields and strain tensor components with reference to a user-defined Bravais lattice and with their corrections from the image distortions specific to HR-TEM and HR-STEM imaging. We provide the corresponding mathematical formalism. AbStrain goes beyond the restriction of the existing method known as geometric phase analysis by enabling direct analysis of the area of interest without the need for reference lattice fringes of a similar crystal structure on the same field of view. In addition, for the case of a crystal composed of two or more types of atoms, each with its own sub-structure constraint, we developed a method named “Relative displacement” for extracting sub-lattice fringes associated to one type of atom and measuring atomic columns displacements associated to each sub-structure with reference to a Bravais lattice or to another sub-structure. The successful application of AbStrain and Relative displacement to HR-STEM images of functional oxide ferroelectric heterostructures is demonstrated.

Abstract: International audience; Glioblastomas (GBM) are heterogeneous tumors with high metabolic plasticity. Their poor prognosis is linked to the presence of glioblastoma stem cells (GSC), which support resistance to therapy, notably to temozolomide (TMZ). Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) recruitment to GBM contributes to GSC chemoresistance, by mechanisms still poorly understood. Here, we provide evidence that MSCs transfer mitochondria to GSCs through tunneling nanotubes, which enhances GSCs resistance to TMZ. More precisely, our metabolomics analyses reveal that MSC mitochondria induce GSCs metabolic reprograming, with a nutrient shift from glucose to glutamine, a rewiring of the tricarboxylic acid cycle from glutaminolysis to reductive carboxylation and increase in orotate turnover as well as in pyrimidine and purine synthesis. Metabolomics analysis of GBM patient tissues at relapse after TMZ treatment documents increased concentrations of AMP, CMP, GMP, and UMP nucleotides and thus corroborate our in vitro analyses. Finally, we provide a mechanism whereby mitochondrial transfer from MSCs to GSCs contributes to GBM resistance to TMZ therapy, by demonstrating that inhibition of orotate production by Brequinar (BRQ) restores TMZ sensitivity in GSCs with acquired mitochondria. Altogether, these results identify a mechanism for GBM resistance to TMZ and reveal a metabolic dependency of chemoresistant GBM following the acquisition of exogenous mitochondria, which opens therapeutic perspectives based on synthetic lethality between TMZ and BRQ.Significance: Mitochondria acquired from MSCs enhance the chemoresistance of GBMs. The discovery that they also generate metabolic vulnerability in GSCs paves the way for novel therapeutic approaches.

The transition to providing multiple services within an agroecosystem is a starting point for heightened multifunctionality, however, there is still hesitation among stakeholders about moving towards multi-service systems, largely because of the lack of knowledge linking productivity and multifunctionality. We reason that much of this reticence could be overcome through a better understanding of stakeholder requirements and innovative transdisciplinary research extended in the dimensions of time and space. We assembled experts in France to identify priority research questions for co-constructing projects with stakeholders. We identified 18 key questions, as well as the obstacles that hinder their resolution and propose potential solutions for tackling these obstacles. We illustrate that research into agroecosystem multifunctionality and service production must be a hugely collaborative effort and needs to integrate knowledge from different sectors and communities. Promoting dialogue, standardization and data-sharing would enhance transdisciplinary progress. Biodiversity is highlighted as a key factor to explore and incorporate into modelling approaches, but major advances must be made in the understanding of dynamic changes in the biodiversity-function-service nexus across landscapes. Resolving these research questions will allow us to translate knowledge into decision objectives, identify adaptation and tipping points in agroecosystems and develop social-ecological economic pathways that are adaptive over time.

Abstract: The Hydro Unit Commitment problem (HUC) specific to hydroelectric units is part of the electricity production planning problem, called Unit Commitment Problem (UCP). More specifically, the studied case is that of the HUC with a single unit, denoted 1-HUC. The unit is located between two reservoirs. The horizon is discretized in time periods. The unit operates at a finite number of points defined as pairs of the generated power and the corresponding water flow. Several constraints are considered. Each reservoir has an initial volume, as well as window resource constraints, defined by a minimum and maximum volume per time period. At each time period, there is an additional positive, negative or zero intake of water in the reservoirs. The case of a price-taker revenue maximization problem is considered. An efficient exact A* variant, so called HA*, is proposed to solve the 1-HUC accouting for window constraints, with a reduced search space and a dedicated optimistic heuristic. This variant is compared to a classical Resource Constrained Shortest Path Problem (RCSPP) algorithm and an MILP formulation solved with CPLEX. Results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms both concurrent alternatives in terms of computational time in average on a set of realistic instances, meaning that HA* exhibits a more stable behavior with more instances solved.

Abstract: International audience; AIMS: Although prebiotics, probiotics, and fecal transplantation can alter the sensation of hunger and/or feeding behavior, the role of the constitutive gut microbiota in the short-term regulation of food intake during normal physiology is still unclear. RESULTS: An antibiotic-induced microbiota depletion study was designed to compare feeding behavior in conventional and microbiota-depleted mice. Tissues were sampled to characterize the time profile of microbiota-derived signals in mice during consumption of either standard or high-fat food for 1 hour. Pharmacological and genetic tools were used to evaluate the contribution of postprandial endotoxemia and inflammatory responses in the short-term regulation of food intake. We observed constitutive microbial and macronutrient-dependent control of food intake at the time scale of a meal, i.e., within 1 hour of food introduction. Specifically, microbiota depletion increased food intake and the microbiota-derived anorectic effect became significant during the consumption of high-fat but not standard food. This anorectic effect correlated with a specific postprandial microbial metabolic signature and did not require postprandial endotoxemia or an NLRP3 (NOD-, LRR- and Pyrin domain-containing protein 3)-inflammasome mediated inflammatory response. Innovation and Conclusion: These findings show that the gut microbiota controls host appetite at the time scale of a meal under normal physiology. Interestingly, a microbiota-derived anorectic effect develops specifically with a high-fat meal, indicating that gut microbiota activity is involved in the satietogenic properties of foods.

Abstract: Using localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) as an optical probe we demonstrate the presence of free carriers in phosphorus doped silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) embedded in a silica matrix. In small SiNCs, with radius ranging from 2.6 to 5.5 nm, the infrared spectroscopy study coupled to numerical simulations allows us to determine the number of electrically active phosphorus atoms with a precision of a few atoms. We demonstrate that LSP resonances can be supported with only about 10 free electrons per nanocrystal, confirming theoretical predictions and probing the limit of the collective nature of plasmons. We reveal the appearance of an avoided crossing behavior linked to the hybridization between the localized surface plasmon in the doped nanocrystals and the silica matrix phonon modes. Finally, a careful analysis of the scattering time dependence versus carrier density in the small size regime allows us to detect the appearance of a new scattering process at high dopant concentration, which can be explained by P clustering inside the SiNCs.
