An incisive, unified account of modern poetry in the Western tradition, arguing that the emergence of the lyric as a dominant verse style is emblematic of the age of the individual.Between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, poetry in the West was transformed. The now-common idea that poetry mostly corresponds with the lyric in the modern sense—a genre in which a first-person speaker talks self-referentially—was foreign to ancient, medieval, and Renaissance poetics. Yet in a relatively short time, age-old habits gave way. Poets acquired unprecedented freedom to write obscurely about private experiences, break rules of meter and syntax, use new vocabulary, and entangle first-person speakers with their own real-life identities. Poetry thus became the most subjective genre of modern literature.On Modern Poetry reconstructs this metamorphosis, combining theoretical reflections with literary history and close readings of poets from Giacomo Leopardi to Louise Glück. Guido Mazzoni shows that the evolution of modern poetry involved significant changes in the way poetry was perceived, encouraged the construction of first-person poetic personas, and dramatically altered verse style. He interprets these developments as symptoms of profound historical and cultural shifts in the modern period: the crisis of tradition, the rise of individualism, the privileging of self-expression and its paradoxes. Mazzoni also reflects on the place of poetry in mass culture today, when its role has been largely assumed by popular music.The result is a rich history of literary modernity and a bold new account of poetry's transformations across centuries and national traditions.

Questo libro vuole rimettere in circolo (e in discussione) quella provocazione-profezia, per interrogarsi sull'eredità della Neoavanguardia tra i poeti nati a partire dagli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta, in relazione a modelli, forme, strumenti del “fare” poesia. E come si fa poesia nel nuovo millennio? Con le emozioni, i paesaggi, la rima fiore-amore, anche se il poeta non va più in carrozza ma in car2go? Nel 1961 Nanni Balestrini, antesignano del cut-up, inventa un algoritmo per ricombinare stringhe di testo al calcolatore. Un'eredità raccolta, oggi, soprattutto da poeti che ripensano alla poesia (anzi, alla scrittura o alle scritture) come un campo aperto di verifica e di possibilità. Non come ambito separato, quindi, ma fertilmente contaminato da linguaggi e contesti del presente, andando dalla videoarte a Instagram. Ne deriva un'adesione (o una resistenza) delle parole alla realtà, tanto più autentica quanto più (appare) sofisticata e schermata, anche per effetto di un confronto incessante con altri modelli, fuori dai nostri confini: l'arbasiniana “gita a Chiasso” si fa ormai su Google Maps.

Going beyond exclusively national perspectives, this volume considers the reception of the ancient Greek poet Sappho and her first Latin translator, Catullus, as a literary pair who transmit poetic culture across the world from the early 20th century to the present. Sappho's and Catullus'reception has shaped a transnational network of poets and intellectuals, helping to define ideas of origins, gender, sexuality and national identities. This book shows that across time and cultures translations and rewritings of Sappho and Catullus articulate modernist poetics of myth and fragmentation, forms of confessionalism and post-modern pastiche. The inquiry focuses on Italian and North American poetry as two central yet understudied hubs of Sappho's and Catullus'modern reception, also linked by a rich mutual intellectual exchange: key case-studies include Giovanni Pascoli, Ezra Pound, H.D., Salvatore Quasimodo, Robert Lowell, Rosita Copioli and Anne Carson, and cover a wide range of unpublished archival material. Texts are analysed and compared through reception and translation theories and inserted within the current debate on the Classics as World Literature, demonstrating how sustained transnational poetic discourse employs the ancient pair to expand notions of literary origins and redefine poetry's relationship to human existence.

Twentieth-century Italian poetry is haunted by countless ghosts and shadows from opera. Echoes of Opera in Modern Italian Poetry reveals their presence and sheds light on their role in shaping that great poetic tradition. This is the first work in English to analyze the influence of opera on modern Italian poetry, uncovering a fundamental but neglected relationship between the two art forms. A group of Italian poets, from Gabriele D'Annunzio to Giorgio Caproni, by way of Umberto Saba and Eugenio Montale, made opera a cornerstone of their artistic craft. More than an occasional stylistic influence, opera is rather analyzed as a fundamental facet of these poets'intellectual quest to overcome the expressive limitations of lyrical poetry. This book reframes modern Italian poetry in a truly interdisciplinary perspective, broadening our understanding of its prominence within the humanities, in the twentieth century and beyond.

L'indagine si sofferma soprattutto sugli aspetti tecnici e formali del lavoro dell'avanguardia, ma disegna al tempo stesso un ampio quadro storico e teorico della modernità letteraria, con un pertinente ragguaglio degli antecedenti più significativi, ossia la riflessione critica e il lavoro verbale di Poe e Baudelaire, di Rimbaud e Mallarmé, di Eliot e Valéry, di Artaud e Brecht, le analisi di Marx e i risultati raggiunti da filosofi e scienziati quali Nietzsche, Freud, Benjamin e Adorno, che con le loro ricerche hanno variamente stimolato e corroborato, anche per contrasto, l'attività letteraria.

Sulla base di un confronto incrociato tra le opere più significative di tre protagonisti di quella stagione letteraria (Elio Pagliarani, Edoardo Sanguineti ed Adriano Spatola) il presente lavoro, attraverso una mirata analisi semiotica, cerca di fornire delle risposte a tali quesiti.

The blending of people and living machines is a central element in the futurist'reconstruction of the universe.'However, prior to the futurist break, a group of early-twentieth-century poets, later dubbed crepuscolari (crepusculars), had already begun an attack against the dominant cultural system, using their poetry as the locus in which useless little objects clashed with the traditional poetry of human greatness and stylistic perfection. The Quiet Avant-Garde draws from a number of twenty-first-century theories – vital materialism, object-oriented ontology, and environmental humanities – as well as Bruno Latour's criticism of modernity to illustrate how the crepuscular movement sabotaged the modern mindset and launched the counter-discourse of the Italian avant-garde by blurring the line dividing people from'things.'This liminal poetics, at the crossroad of tradition, modernism, and the avant-garde, acted as the initiator of the ethical and environmental transition from a universe subjected to humans to human-thing co-agency. This book proposes a contemporary reading of Italian twentieth-century movements and offers a foothold for scholars outside Italian studies to access authors who are still unexplored in North American literature.

Nel centenario della nascita di Franco Fortini torna in libreria l'antologia dei poeti italiani del Novecento, un'opera che oggi può essere considerata un classico: a quarant'anni dalla prima edizione, intatte sono la ricchezza e la profondità della scrittura e dell'analisi. Non si tratta, tuttavia, solo di un'antologia, ma di un originale studio critico che è insieme saggio, commento penetrante, giudizio di valore; un testo che ha contribuito a una nuova lettura della poesia del secolo. I poeti italiani sono presentati al di là dell'appartenenza a gruppi e schieramenti letterari; ne emergono così le peculiarità e i cortocircuiti prodotti dall'incontro con la realtà. La poesia è pensata nella sua singolarità espressiva e, simultaneamente, nel suo essere allegoria delle torsioni della storia e dell'esistenza: l'umanissima nevrosi di Saba, la poesia come salvezza di Montale, la reticenza e la volontà di dialogo di Sereni, la disperata voracità di Pasolini, l'alta eloquenza di Zanzotto. Attraverso una scrittura densa e asciutta, sostenuta da una risoluta finalità didattica, trapela, come scrive Pier Vincenzo Mengaldo nel saggio introduttivo, «una concezione di tipo religioso del poeta come testimone e martire», e della poesia come «opposizione, alternativa e utopia». È possibile, conclude lo stesso Fortini congedando la sua antologia, «che la proposta di esistenza che la poesia lirica del Novecento ha formulata sia oscurata da altre forme letterarie e da altri modi di essere e di voler essere». E tuttavia a quella poesia resta il merito di aver anticipato, interpretato, o addirittura dettato, con una straordinaria forza di disperazione e tensione, «qualcosa di decisivo per il significato di questo presente».

Lo studio interpreta la poesia di Montale dalla prospettiva del dono come oggetto di interesse di discipline antropologiche e filosofiche. L'analisi inizia dalla concezione triadica del dare-ricevere-ricambiare di Mauss in contrapposizione alla teoria derridiana che nega la possibilità del dono. Si tratta di un ampio sguardo su tutta la produzione poetica dell'autore per ricostruirne la nascita e lo sviluppo, nonché per rendere la specificità del suo destino. Il lavoro strutturato sull'esempio del trittico maussiano ne capovolge i contenuti e propone il rifiuto quale elemento fondante dell'intera analisi del dono. In ultima istanza, il dono appare come una categoria interpretativa della poesia che offre un'inesauribilità semantica al di là di ogni economia e di ogni costrizione sociale.

The debate on literature and the arts provoked by the Italian neoavant-garde (neoavanguardia) is undoubtedly one of the most animated and controversial the country has witnessed from World War II to the present. Comprising the period between the late 1950s and the late 1960s, the phenomenon of the neoavanguardia involved key writers, critics, and artists, both as insiders – Sanguineti, Balestrini, Guglielmi, Eco, and others – and adversaries such as Pasolini, Calvino, and Moravia.In The New Avant-Garde in Italy – the first book in English to document the movement – John Picchione's objective is twofold: to provide a comprehensive analysis of the theoretical tenets that inform the works of the neoavanguardia and to show how they are applied to the poetic practices of its authors. The neoavanguardia cannot, Picchione argues, be defined as a movement with a unified program expressed in the form of manifestos or shared theoretical principles. It experiences irreconcilable internal conflicts that are explored as a split between two main blocs – one that is tied to the project of modernity, the other to post-modern aesthetic postures. This study suggests that some of the contentious views proposed by the neoavanguardia anticipated a wide range of issues that continue to be significant and pressing to this day.
