Abstract

A measurement of strange baryon and antibaryon production in Pb-Pb collisions has been carried out by the NA57 experiment at the CERN SPS, with 40 and 158 A GeV/c beam momentum. Results on $\Lambda$, $\Xi$ and $\Omega$ hyperon yields at mid-rapidity in the most central 53% of Pb-Pb collisions at 40 A GeV/c are presented and compared with those obtained at higher energy, in the same collision centrality range. The $\Lambda$ and $\Xi^-$ yields per unit rapidity stay roughly constant while those of $\Omega^-$, $\bar\Lambda$, $\bar\Xi^+$ and $\bar\Omega^+$ increase when going to the higher SPS energy. Hyperon yields at the SPS are compared with those from the STAR experiment in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 130 GeV Au-Au collisions at RHIC., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

2. Simple Models of the Contribution of Intermediate Stage Gluons to J/ψ Suppression at the CERN SPS

Abstract

We construct three simple scenarios of the time dependence of density of intermediate stage gluons in nuclear collisions in the CERN SPS energy range. Gluons with energy of about 0.6–1.0 GeV are assumed to be produced in nucleon-nucleon collisions in a Glauber type model. The rate of gluon production is given by the parameter ng/nn equal to the average number of gluons produced per nucleon-nucleon collision. The value of this parameter determines the behaviour of the gas of gluons. The number of gluons increases due to gluon branching and processes like g+g → g+g+g and decreases due to the hadronization. Gluons are assumed to be able to dissociate J/ψ in g+J/ψ collisions, the dissociation cross-section σgγ is taken as a free parameter. In the first scenario, the energy density of the gas of gluons never reaches the critical energy density ec ≈ 0.7 GeV/fm3 and gluons rapidly hadronize. In the second scenario, the critical energy density is reached but the system of gluons is unable to reach thermalization. In the third scenario gluons reach thermalization and the thermalized system suppresses J/ψ by the Matsui-Satz mechanism. The third scenario under the assumption of a small value of σgψ is able to describe qualitatively the data on J/ψ suppression in Pb−Pb interactions obtained by the NA50 Collaboration. Other scenarios have problems with getting the rather abrupt onset of J/ψ suppression.

Abstract

The new results on hyperon production in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c and 40 A GeV/c are presented. Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the yields of hyperon in Pb–Pb collisions from the NA57 experiment. The aim of NA57 was to study the dependence of the strangeness enhancement on the interaction volume and the collision energy per incoming nucleon. The centrality range of the NA57 experiment extended down to a limit of about 50 wounded nucleons. The experiment collected data using 158 and 40 A GeV/c beams at the CERN SPS. There was indication of an increase of the enhancements with the centrality of the collisions. The data were corrected for acceptance and efficiency losses by calculating weight for each particle with a GEANT-based Monte-Carlo simulation.

Abstract

The formation of quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions should manifest itself by the increase of the ratio of medium to large mass dileptons, the former being produced predominantly in the QGP and the mixed phase whereas the latter are produced mostly by the Drell-Yan process. The increase of this ratio should be visible either when comparing collisions of lighter with heavier ions, e.g. O+O with Pb+Pb or when comparing low and large transverse energy events in heavy ion e.g. Pb+Pb collisions.

Abstract

We analyze the rate with which theJ/ψ content of an originally narrow wave packet of charmed quark-antiquark pair is diminishing in a medium which screens colour charges. TheJ/ψ content decreases to 50% within a typical time of 0.2–0.3 fm. Taking this into account, we find thepT-dependence ofJ/ψ suppression by quark-gluon plasma to be much flatter than in simplified calculations based on the semi-classical picture ofJ/ψ formation time.

Abstract

We point out that recent indications from the NA38 collaboration at CERN for an increase of theΦ(ω+ρ0) ratio in central 200A GeVO+U andS+U collisions give evidence for an appr chemical equilibrium in these collisions. We different mechanisms for such a behavior, the hypothetical formation of a transient plasma (QGP) phase and a hadronic rescattering scenario. Theoretical uncertainties in the hadronic rescattering calculation are eliminated by linking the ϕ enhancement to the suppression ofJ/ψ mesons observed in the same experiment. We find that the data are most easily “explained” by postulating QGP formation in a fraction of the central collisions, but that a simultaneous quantitative description of both phenomena can also be obtained via hadronic rescattering. Even though in the latter case very high particle densities in the collision zone are required, a purely hadronic mechanism for the observations can thus presently not be excluded.

Abstract

The multiplicity of charged particles in the central rapidity region has been measured by the NA57 experiment in Pb--Pb collisions at the CERN SPS at two beam momenta: 158 A GeV/{\it c} and 40 A GeV/{\it c}. The value of $dN_{ch}/d\eta$ at the maximum has been determined and its behaviour as a function of centrality has been studied in the centrality range covered by NA57 (about 50% of the inelastic cross section). Abstract

Enhancements of strange baryon and anti-baryon yields were first observed in Pb–Pb interactions at 160 A GeV/c by WA97. The aim of the NA57 experiment is to investigate how these enhancements behave as a function of energy, and over a broader centrality range than that which was available with WA97. This paper presents a comparison of the hyperon yields in Pb–Pb interactions at 40 A GeV/c and 160 A GeV/c. Preliminary signals for the p-Be data at 40 A GeV/c are also shown.

Abstract

The NA57 experiment has measured strange baryon and antibaryon production in Pb-Pb collisions at 40 A GeV/c and 160 A GeV/c beam momenta. This presentation covers strangeness enhancement and transverse spectra from the 160 A GeV/c data, and energy dependence of the particle yields. Enhancement factors increase with increasing strangeness content of the particle, when production yields from Pb-Pb collisions are compared with those observed in p-Be and p-Pb interactions. The transverse mass spectra have been analysed both with exponential fits and using a transverse flow model.

Abstract

The production of strange baryons and anti‐baryons in PbPb and pBe collisions has been studied by the NA57 experiment at the CERN SPS, extending down the centrality range covered by the previous WA97 experiment, and collecting data at two different energies. The enhanced production of such particles in central PbPb collisions with respect to pBe has been experimentally confirmed. This paper discusses results on Ⅺ and Λ hyperon production obtained at 40 and 158 A GeV/c.

PoS(hep2001)248; New data on strange baryon yields in Pb–Pb interactions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon are presented as a function of the collision centrality. The possible onset of a deconfined phase when the collision involves from 50 to 100 wounded nucleons is discussed.

Abstract

NA57 has been specifically designed to study the onset of strange baryon and antibaryon enhancements in Pb-Pb with respect to p-Be collisions, first observed by the WA97 experiment at 160 A GeV/c beam momentum. The aim is to look for the dependence of these enhancements on the interaction volume, as measured by the number of wounded nucleons, and the energy per incoming nucleon. In NA57 the centrality range goes down to a lower limit of about 50 wounded nucleons, compared with about 100 in WA97. Data have been collected both at 160 and at 40 A GeV/c, while WA97 collected data only at the top SPS beam momentum of 160 A GeV/c. In this contribution we recall the main features of the NA57 experiment and we present the first results on Ⅺ− and Ⅺ+ hyperon production in Pb-Pb collisions at 160 A GeV/c.

Abstract

The effect ofJ/ψ dissolution in quark-gluon plasma is calculated within quantum mechanical approach taking into account also relativistic corrections. It is found that relativistic effects do not influence significantly the time dependence of theJ/ψ dissolution. Consequently the rate ofJ/ψ suppression is not dramatically changed.

Abstract

We point out that the recent data obtained by the NA35 collaboration at the CERN SPS on E T distributions in 16 O + Pb collisions can be understood within the wounded nucleon model with a simple geometrical calculation of the number of interacting nucleons in 16 O. Although the large E T trigger increases the average E T per final state hadron, we are unable to explain in this way the observed rather large value of this quantity.

Abstract

We present a quark-parton model for reactions π − p → μ + μ − + hadrons and π − p → hadrons. The model can give detailed prescriptions about relationships between the two reactions. In particular it predicts that the difference of charge distributions d Q /d y in the two reactions will give a direct and unambiguous determination of the charge of the up-quark.

Basic assumption of multistring models can be tested by measuring correlations of total transverse energiesET andE′T deposited in two adjacent rapidity intervals. A high positive correlation ofET andE′T is caused by the fact that largeET is most likely connected with a large numbers of strings and this implies in turn high probability for largeE′T. We present specific predictions which could test the multistring model as applied to the recent results of the HELIOS collaboration at CERN onp-Pb interactions.

Abstract

The expression for the Drell-Yan cross section is presented which takes into account the geometry of heavy ion collisions. The Drell-Yan cross section is shown to be proportional to the transverse energy produced within a fixed rapidity interval. A dependence steeper than linear of the cross section for production of dileptons with masses larger than about 2 GeV on the transverse energy in a given rapidity bin would be a clear-cut signal for the formation of the quark-gluon plasma.

Abstract

We argue that J ψ suppression observed recently in high energy oxygen-uranium collisions by the NA38 Collaboration at CERN need not imply that the quark-gluon plasma was produced. A considerable part of the effect may be caused by the disintegration of J ψ 's in collisions with dense hadronic matter (below the phase transition into quark-gluon plasma) produced simultaneously with J ψ in heavy ion interactions.
