Abstract: The European physical journal / C 81(8), 739 (2021). doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-021-09370-8, The measurement of the jet cross sections by the H1 collaboration had been compared to various predictions including the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD calculations which are corrected in this erratum for an implementation error in one of the components of the NNLO calculations. The jet data and the other predictions remain unchanged. Eight figures, one table and conclusions are adapted accordingly, exhibiting even better agreement between the corrected NNLO predictions and the jet data., Published by Springer, Heidelberg

Abstract: The strong coupling constant $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ is determined from inclusive jet and dijet cross sections in neutral-current deep-inelastic $ep$ scattering (DIS) measured at HERA by the H1 collaboration using next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD predictions. The dependence of the NNLO predictions and of the resulting value of $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ at the $Z$-boson mass $m_Z$ are studied as a function of the choice of the renormalisation and factorisation scales. Using inclusive jet and dijet data together, the strong coupling constant is determined to be $\alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1166\,(19)_{\rm exp}\,(24)_{\rm th}$. Complementary, $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ is determined together with parton distribution functions of the proton (PDFs) from jet and inclusive DIS data measured by the H1 experiment. The value $\alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1147\,(25)_{\rm tot}$ obtained is consistent with the determination from jet data alone. The impact of the jet data on the PDFs is studied. The running of the strong coupling is tested at different values of the renormalisation scale and the results are found to be in agreement with expectations., Comment: 45 pages, 17 figures, with changes discussed in an erratum submitted to EPJ C

Based on the NLO BFKL equation, we construct a vertex for the production of a jet at central rapidity in k_T-factorization. A jet algorithm is introduced, and we take special care of the separation of multi-Regge and quasi-multi-Regge kinematics. The connection with the energy scale of the evolution is investigated in detail. The result is discussed for two situations: scattering of highly virtual photons, which requires a symmetric energy scale to separate the impact factors from the gluon Greens function, and hadron-hadron collisions, where a non-symmetric scale choice is needed. For the second case we are able to define a NLO unintegrated gluon density, valid in the small-x regime, and give the evolution equation for this density as well. In the second part, we examine the angular decorrelation of Mueller-Navelet jets. Using an operator formalism in the space of anomalous dimension and conformal spin, we implement the NLO BFKL Greens function to study the rapidity dependence of angular decorrelations. We incorporate the necessary summation of collinearly enhanced corrections beyond NLO accuracy. We compare our results with data from the Tevatron ppbar-collider and provide predictions for the LHC as well. We also extend our study to the angular decorrelation between a forward jets and the electron in deep inelastic ep scattering. The angular decorrelation has not been measured in DIS so far, but we give theoretical results for this observable which already implement the experimental cuts.

Abstract: Physical review / D 63(5), 052002 (2001). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.63.052002, A study of the antineutrino-jet mass spectrum in e^+p -> antineutrino+X events at center-of-mass energy 300 GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb^-1. The mass spectrum is in good agreement with that expected from Standard Model processes over the antineutrino -jet mass range studied. No significant excess attributable to the decay of a narrow resonance is observed. By using both e^+p -> e^+ X and e^+p -> antineutrino X data, mass-dependent limits are set on the s-channel production of scalar and vector resonant states. Couplings to first-generation quarks are considered and limits are presented as a function of the e^+q and antineutrino-q branching ratios. The consequent phenomenology is discussed in the case of four-jet signatures of particular relevance to future electron-positron Linear Colliders (LCs), such as in Higgs boson searches. Abstract: 74 pp. (2000)., A limit on the QCD instanton induced cross section has been determined using the data recorded by the ZEUS detector during the year 1997, with a total integrated luminosity of $26pb^{-1}$. Deep inelastic scattering events were selected, requiring $Q^2$ > $75GeV^2$ and x > $10^{-3}$. Cuts to enrich the instanton fraction (final cuts) have been devised: They are the jet transverse momentum, the reconstructed $Q'^2$, the transverse energy, the mass and the multiplicity of the instanton candidate. The best strategy to determine a limit on fraction of the instanton candidates among the events after the final cuts has turned out to be a fit to the sphericity distributions. The upper limit at 95% confidence level of the fraction of instanton events in the DIS sample, including systematic errors, is ${f}lim,Hrw$ = 12% for the Herwig Monte Carlo program. Using the Ariadne Monte Carlo program yields a limit of ${f}lim,Ari$ = 8.2%. These limits have to be compared to the value predicted by theory (QCDINS 1.6) of: ${f}$ = 6.2% A second, independent, method relying on the best strategy of cuts was not as sensitive and gave weaker limits.

Abstract: 10 pp. (1999)., The potential of the TESLA linear $e^+e^-$ collider to determine the strong coupling constant, $\alpha_S$, at 500 GeV is investigated. Experimental complications due to background from $W$- and $Z$-pairs, top-production, initial state photon radiation and from beamstrahlung are considered. The hadronic event selection procedures used by the experiments at LEP II are reviewed for the applicability at TESLA. An estimate of the various error contributions to the total uncertainty of an $\alpha_S$ determination is presented. It confirms that hadronisation effects are diminished while the uncertainty from the choice of the renormalisation scale will dominate. Fits of the $\ln(R)$-matched second order ($\mathcal O(\alpha_S^2$)) and resummed calculation (NLLA) to six observables are used to estimate the error contributions. This yields the expectation of the precision for $\alpha_S$(500 GeV) of $\pm 0.0025$.

Abstract: 196 pp. (1998)., The advent of the $ep$ collider HERA at the DESY research center has opened a wide kinematical wi11dow for the study of the Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) processes $e^+{p} \to e^+{X}$. Recent measurements of the structure function $F_2$ of the proton have confirmed the fact that the Bjorken scaling which arises from the naive Quark-Parton Model is broken in the limit where the scaling variable, $x$-Bjorken, is small. It also revealed that $F_2$ grows exponentially with $x$-Bjorken at low $x$. The standard picture of parton evolution, based on the DGLAP equations, reproduces this steep rise if it is used with an appropriate set of $F_2$ parametrizations. However these parametrizations iuclude 'ad-hoc' assumptions on the non-perturbative behavior or the structure functions and depend on a large set of phenomenological parameters. The steep rise can also be reproduced by using different perturbative treatment for the parton evolution. This treatment, based on the BFKL evolution equations, differs from the standard DGLAP picture by the lack of ordering in the transverse energy of the emitted partons. Unlike DGLAP, the BFKL picture reproduces the steep rise of $F_2$ without assuming any particular shape of the structure function in the non-perturbative domain. In order to gain an insight on parton dynamics in DIS at low $x$ and discriminate between these two pictures, jet observables are used as they are expected to be closely related to the hard scattering and depend only slightly on the hadronization effects. Two jet observables are studied here in more details: the azimuthal correlation between the two leading-order jets and the cross section of the forward jet production. The measured cross sections are corrected for detector effects and compared to several DIS Monte Carlo models and next-to-leading order simulations over a wide kinematic range. The results are evaluated in the lightof the BFKL and the DGLAP pictures. The experimental results are compared to other models of parton evolution as well, like the Colour Dipole Model (CDM), the Linked Dipole Chain (LDC) and the resolved photon model in DIS.

Abstract: Physical review / D 56(5), 2702 - 2712 (1997). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.56.2702, We have calculated jet shapes in low $Q^2$ $ep$ and $p\overline{p}$ collisions in perturbation theory at order $\alpha_s^3$ for the hard parton-parton processes. For the $\gamma p$ process resolved and direct contributions are superimposed. The dependence of the jet shapes on transverse energy, rapidity, and inner cone extension is studied. The numerical results of the calculation are compared with recent data from ZEUS at HERA and from CDF and D0 at the TEVATRON. Good agreement is achieved if the problem of merging overlapping jets is taken into account by varying the parameter $R_{sep}$ as a function of transverse energy and rapidity., Published by Inst., Woodbury, NY

Abstract: A new method is presented to determine the gluon density in the proton from jet production in deeply inelastic scattering. By using the technique of Mellin transforms not only for the solution of the scale evolution equation of the parton densities but also for the evaluation of scattering cross sections, the gluon density can be extracted in next-to-leading order QCD. Abstract: The production of transverse energy in deep inelastic scattering is measured as a function of the kinematic variables x and Q 2 using the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA. The results are compared to the different predictions based upon two alternative QCD evolution equations, namely the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) and the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) equations. In a pseudorapidity interval which is central in the hadronic centre of mass system between the current and the proton remnant fragmentation region the produced transverse energy increases with decreasing x for constant Q 2 . Such a behaviour can be explained with a QCD calculation based upon the BFKL ansatz. The rate of forward jets, proposed as a signature for BFKL dynamics, has been measured.

Abstract: 24 pp. (1995)., Inclusive jet cross sections for events with a large rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction from the reaction ep → jet + X with quasi-real photons have been measured with the ZEUS detector. The cross sections refer to jets with transverse energies E T jet > 8 GeV. The data show the characteristics of a diffractive process mediated by pomeron exchange. Assuming that the events are due to the exchange of a pomeron with partonic structure, the quark and gluon content of the pomeron is probed at a scale ∼ ( E T jet ) 2 . A comparison of the measurements with model predictions based on QCD plus Regge phenomenology requires a contribution of partons with a hard momentum density in the pomeron. A combined analysis of the jet cross sections and recent ZEUS measurements of the diffractive structure function in deep inelastic scattering gives the first experimental evidence for the gluon content of the pomeron in diffractive hard scattering processes. The data indicate that between 30% and 80% of the momentum of the pomeron carried by partons is due to hard gluons.

Abstract: 16 pp. (1995)., Jet production in deep inelastic scattering for 120 < Q 2 < 3600 GeV 2 has been studied using data from an integrated luminosity of 3.2 pb −1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Jets are identified with the JADE algorithm. A cut on the angular distribution of parton emission in the γ ∗ - parton centre-of-mass system minimises the experimental and theoretical uncertainties in the determination of the jet rates. The jet rates, when compared to O ( α s 2 ) perturbative QCD calculations, allow a precise determination of α s ( Q ) in three Q 2 -intervals. The values are consistent with a running of ifα s ( Q ), as expected from QCD. Extrapolating to Q = M Z 0 α s ( M Z 0 ) = 0.117 ± 0.005 (stat) −0.005 +0.004 (syst exp ) ± 0.007 (syst theory ).

Jet production via a direct pomeron coupling is compared with the resolved--pomeron mechanism. We consider both direct and resolved photoproduction. Rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are calculated and compared with preliminary H1 and ZEUS data.

Abstract: 26 pp. (1994)., The deep inelastic scattering 2+1 jet cross- section is a useful observable for precision tests of QCD, e.g. measuring the strong coupling constant alpha(s). A consistent analysis requires a good understanding of the theoretical uncertainties and one of the most fundamental ones in QCD is due to the renormalization scheme and scale ambiguity. Different methods, which have been proposed to resolve the scale ambiguity, are applied to the 2+1 jet cross-section and the uncertainty is estimated. It is shown that the uncertainty can be made smaller by choosing the jet definition in a suitable way.

Abstract: 123 pp. (1994)., In this thesis the first analysis of multi-jet production with the Hl detector at HERA is presented. The studies are based on data taken in 1992. The integrated luminosity was $22.5 nb^{-1}$. The structure of multi jet events are explored und compared to Monte Carlo models. Jet rates for momentum transfers squared up to $500 GeV^2$ are determind using the JADE clustering algorithm. Sytematical effects are investigated. Within the statistical and systematical errors the jet rates are found to be in agreement with the predictions from QCD based models.

Abstract: Three commonly used jet algorithms and two new ones have been studied with respect to their performance in the new experimental situation of deep-inelastic scattering at the HERA electron-proton collider. Their ability to reconstruct properties of the underlying parton level subprocesses was investigated. This relates to first order QCD matrix elements and higher order parton emissions as described by parton showers. A new method was devised to determine suitable values for the resolution parameters of the algorithms and assess their reconstruction quality. The Jade algorithm, which is frequently used ine+e−-annihilation, is found to perform less well compared to other algorithms.

Abstract: 15 pp. (1993)., A sample of events with two distinct jets, in addition to the proton remnant, has been identified in deep inelastic, neutral current ep interactions recorded at HERA by the ZEUS experiment. For these events, the mass of the hadronic system ranges from 40 to 260 GeV. The salient features of the observed jet production agree with the predictions of higher order QCD.

Abstract: 20 pp. (1993)., We comment on the numerical calculation of the Lipatov pomeron in the measurement of “hot spots” in deep inelastic scattering. We illustrate that previous analytic estimates based upon the leading term in the Lipatov equation are accurate within 20%. We present evidence that numerical calculations should be done with a fixed αs. The use of a running $α_s$ appears as an unnecessary complication. We argue that at low Q2 the BFKL pomeron requires higher-order corrections.

The main difference between this and conventional algorithms is that while the latter in each step join two clusters into one,Arclus joins three clusters into two. The performance ofArclus in terms of the size of hadronization corrections is studied for some jet-reconstruction tasks ine+e− andep collisions, and is found to be as good as or, for some tasks inep collisions, better than conventional clustering algorithms.

Abstract: 24 pp. (1991)., We have measured the cross section and $Q^2$-dependence of the reaction γγ→ multihadrons, using the CELLO detector at DESY, for visible final-state masses between 4 and 9 GeV. The data are well fitted by an incoherent sum of Generalised Vector Meson Dominance and Quark Parton Model terms, but at lowQ2 require the addition of a third component which resembles the QPM but is less two-jet-like. With and without this term, the GVDM cross section atQ2=0 is found to be 200±20 and 250±25 nb, respectively.

Abstract: 23 pp. (1991)., Higher order electromagnetic radiative corrections to neutral current deep inelastic electron proton scattering are studied in collinear approximation. Second order corrections show qualitatively new features compared to the first order ones and are non-negligible for largey and smallx. We also show how kinematical cuts on the recoil quark jet, in particular the jet angle, will allow a strong reduction of the contribution from radiative events for smallx and largey.

Abstract: (1983). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.51.443, The results of a high-statistics study of inclusive muon spectra at PETRA are reported. Improved mass limits have been obtained for heavy quarks, heavy leptons, and charged Higgs particles. It is shown that the fragmentation properties of b quarks and c quarks are different, with the mean fragmentation variables 〈zb〉=0.75±0.03±0.06, 〈zc〉=0.46±0.02±0.05 and the average semileptonic branching ratio for the B and C hadrons R(B)=(10.5±1.5±1.3)%, R(C)=(11.5±1.0±1.7)%.
