A design parameter study is presented for the closed-loop type passive containment cooling system (PCCS) which is equipped with two heat exchangers: one installed at the inside of the containment and the other submerged in the water pool at the outside of the containment. A GOTHIC code model for PCCS performance analyses was set up and the design parameters such as the heat exchanger sizes, locations, and water pool tank volumes were analyzed to investigate the feasibility of installing this type of PCCS in PWRs like OPR-1000 being operated in Korea. We identified the size of the circulation loop and heat exchangers as major design parameters affecting the performance of PCCS. The analyses showed that the heat exchangers in the inside of the containment would be more influential on the heat removal capability of PCCS than that installed in the water pool at the outside of the containment. Hence, it was recommended to down-size the heat exchangers in the water pool to optimize PCCS without compromising its performance. Based on the parametric study, it was demonstrated that a closed-loop type PCCS could be designed sufficiently compact for installation in the available space within the containment of PWRs like OPR-1000.

Early Pleistocene Marine Isotope Stage (MIS)-31 (1.081–1.062 Ma) is a unique interval of extreme global warming, including evidence of a West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) collapse. Here we present a new 1,000-year resolution, spanning 1.110–1.030 Ma, diatom-based reconstruction of primary productivity, relative sea surface temperature changes, sea-ice proximity/open ocean conditions and diatom species absolute abundances during MIS-31, from the Scotia Sea (59°S) using deep-sea sediments collected during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 382. The lower Jaramillo magnetic reversal (base of C1r.1n, 1.071 Ma) provides a robust and independent time-stratigraphic marker to correlate records from other drill cores in the Antarctic Zone of the Southern Ocean (AZSO). An increase in open ocean species Fragilariopsis kerguelensis in early MIS-31 at 53°S (Ocean Drilling Program Site 1,094) correlates with increased obliquity forcing, whereas at 59°S (IODP Site U1537; this study) three progressively increasing, successive peaks in the relative abundance of F. kerguelensis correlate with Southern Hemisphere-phased precession pacing. These observations reveal a complex pattern of ocean temperature change and sustained sea surface temperature increase lasting longer than a precession cycle within the Atlantic sector of the AZSO. Timing of an inferred WAIS collapse is consistent with delayed warmth (possibly driven by sea-ice dynamics) in the southern AZSO, supporting models that indicate WAIS sensitivity to local sub-ice shelf melting. We propose a scaled-down experimental model of vertical air-natural convection channels by applying the modified Ishii–Kataoka scaling method with the assistance of numerical analyses to the Reactor Vault Cooling System (RVCS) of the Proto-type Gen-IV Sodium-cooled fast reactor (PGSFR) being developed in Korea. Two major non-dimensional numbers (modified Richardson and Friction number) from the momentum equation and Stanton number from the energy balance equation were identified to design the scaled-down experimental model to assimilate thermal-hydraulic behaviors of the natural convective air-cooling channel of RVCS. The ratios of the design parameters in the PGSFR RVCS between the prototype and the scaled-down model were determined by setting Richardson and Stanton number to be unity. The friction number which cannot be determined by the Ishii-Kataoka method was estimated by numerical analyses using the MARS-KS system code. The numerical analyses showed that the friction number with the form loss coefficient of 2.0 in the scale-down model would result in an acceptable prediction of the thermal-hydraulic behavior in RVCS. We also performed experimental benchmarking using the scaled-down model with the MARS-KS simulations to verify the appropriateness of the scale-down model, which demonstrated that the temperature rises and the average air flow velocity measured in the scale-down model.

A multifunctional scatterometer system and optimized radar signal processing for simultaneous observation of various physical oceanographic parameters are described in this paper. Existing observation methods with microwave remote sensing techniques generally use several separate systems such as scatterometer, altimeter, and Doppler radar for sea surface monitoring, which are inefficient in system operation and cross-analysis of each observation data. To improve this point, we integrated separate measurement functions into a single observation system by adding a measurement function of Doppler frequency to the existing system. So it enables to simultaneously measure the range and polarimetric responses of backscattering as well as movements of the sea surface. Here, the simultaneous measurement function of Doppler frequency was implemented by sampling an FMCW (frequency modulated continuous wave) radar signal as 2D raw data consisting of fast- and slow-time samples, i.e., the range and backscattering of radar target signals are analyzed from the fast-time samples while the Doppler frequency by the radar target’s movement extracts from the slow-time samples. Through the Fourier transformed-based range-Doppler signal process, distance (R), backscattering (σ°), and Doppler frequency (fD) are sequentially extracted from the 2D raw data, and a correlation to the physical oceanographic parameters is analyzed. Operability of the proposed system was examed through total 3 times of field campaigns from June 2017 to August 2020 and the observation data retrieved by the radar measurement data (R, σ°, fD) was also cross-analyzed with in-situ data: e.g., tide, significant wave height, and wind speed and direction. Differences in the comparative results as an observational accuracy are as follows. Tidal level (Root Mean Square Error 0.169 m (R)), significant wave height (RMSE 0.127 m (R), 0.362 m (σ°)), wind speed (RMSE 1.880 m/s (fD), 2.094 m/s (σ°)) and direction (18.84° (fD)).

Monitoring of tidal creeks is important for safety in tidal flats and for understanding coastal changes due to sedimentation and erosion. The tidal creek is a small stream developed on tidal flats and requires very precise Digital Elevation Model (DEM) to detect it. Interferometric SAR (InSAR) technique was usually applied for generating DEM over inland regions. In tidal flat regions, low backscattering due to flatness and remnant water of the tidal flat prevents from generating high precision DEM. In this study, optimum InSAR baseline condition was investigated to generate such a precise DEM in the tidal flat. The long-baseline TanDEM-X and airborne InSAR system were found to be useful, and the tidal creek information (width and depth) was successfully extracted from the DEM that was generated from optimal baseline InSAR systems.

International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 382 in the Scotia Sea’s Iceberg Alley recovered among the most continuous and highest resolution stratigraphic records in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica spanning the last 3.3 Myr. Sites drilled in Dove Basin (U1536/U1537) have well-resolved magnetostratigraphy and a strong imprint of orbital forcing in their lithostratigraphy. All magnetic reversals of the last 3.3 Myr are identified, providing a robust age model independent of orbital tuning. During the Pleistocene, alternation of terrigenous versus diatomaceous facies shows power in the eccentricity and obliquity frequencies comparable to the amplitude modulation of benthic δ18O records. This suggests that variations in Dove Basin lithostratigraphy during the Pleistocene reflect a similar history as globally integrated ice volume at these frequencies. However, power in the precession frequencies over the entire ∼3.3 Myr record does not match the amplitude modulation of benthic δ18O records, suggesting Dove Basin contains a unique record at these frequencies. Comparing the position of magnetic reversals relative to local facies changes in Dove Basin and the same magnetic reversals relative to benthic δ18O at North Atlantic IODP Site U1308, we demonstrate Dove Basin facies change at different times than benthic δ18O during intervals between ∼3 and 1 Ma. These differences are consistent with precession phase shifts and suggest climate signals with a Southern Hemisphere summer insolation phase were recorded around Antarctica. If Dove Basin lithology reflects local Antarctic ice volume changes, these signals could represent ice sheet precession-paced variations not captured in benthic δ18O during the 41-kyr world.

The condensation heat transfer on the external surface of a vertical slender tube in the steam-air mixture environment was investigated. The condensation heat transfer was analyzed using various open experimental datasets. A new model for the steam condensation with noncondensable gases applicable to the tubular configuration was developed. The proposed model is based on the analogy between heat and mass transfer; in particular, the correlation incorporates the effects of tube curvature under turbulent free convection conditions together with the wavy film effect. In addition, the film-vapor interfacial temperature was used to calculate the heat transfer coefficient and various physical properties, through an iterative technique instead of the wall temperature, which is commonly used in experimental correlations for convenience. Thereafter, the effects of three correction factors were individually investigated. The wavy film effect considerably changed the condensation heat transfer, about 20% on average. The curvature effect was also found to make a meaningful effect according to the convection conditions. And, the adoption of interfacial temperature was found to make a maximum 7% adjustment, but it would make a more significant effect in high heat transfer conditions. Overall, the proposed model predicted the experimental datasets reasonably well, i.e., within ±30% accuracy.

In this paper, advanced interval type-2 fuzzy sliding mode control (AIT2FSMC) for robot manipulator is proposed. The proposed AIT2FSMC is a combination of interval type-2 fuzzy system and sliding mode control. For resembling a feedback linearization (FL) control law, interval type-2 fuzzy system is designed. For compensating the approximation error between the FL control law and interval type-2 fuzzy system, sliding mode controller is designed, respectively. The tuning algorithms are derived in the sense of Lyapunov stability theorem. Two-link rigid robot manipulator with nonlinearity is used to test and the simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method that can control unknown system well.
