Abstract

Highly transparent and mechanically robust thermoplastic composites have been developed by hot‐pressing PETG with E‐glass fabrics. The tow‐spreading technique facilitates the reduction of internal defects and fiber crimp angle in the composites, thereby significantly improving their optical and mechanical properties. The optimized composite containing 55.1 vol% glass fibers and 0.4 mm thickness has a high transmittance of 86.1%@616 nm and a low overall haze of 7.2%. Moreover, the 1 mm thick composites exhibit tensile strength of up to 340 MPa and impact strength of up to 86.3 kJ/m2. After 28 days of hygrothermal or UV aging, the composites show minimal changes in their glass transition temperature and thermal degradation temperature. The chemical structure also remains unchanged, with no observed crystallization. In comparison to UV aging, the composites demonstrate better resistance against hygrothermal aging. Specifically, the hygrothermal aged sample displayed a light transmittance retention rate of 93.5% and a bending strength retention rate of 94.3%, while these values were reduced to 73.3% and 90.5%, respectively, in the UV aged sample. The opto‐mechanical properties enhanced mechanism and aging degradation mechanism have been identified by microscopic morphological observation. This work provides an innovative and straightforward approach to fabricate transparent, recyclable, high‐strength thermoplastic composites. 7. Performing Intelligent Design of Broadband Pillbox Window for a Terahertz Traveling-Wave Tube by Using Physics-Informed Neural Network and Genetic Algorithm

Abstract

A physics-informed neural network (PINN) is utilized to advance the research of broadband pillbox window (PW) for a terahertz traveling-wave tube (THz TWT). PINN integrates the physical laws of PW into the neural network training process, thereby enhancing the predictive speed and accuracy between the structure parameters of PW and its S-parameters. Subsequently, the global genetic algorithm (GA) is employed to obtain the structure parameter set best matching the desired S-parameter targets from the huge 5-D parameter-set space. Based on the PINN and GA, a general intelligent PW design method (IPWDM) is developed. With the help of IPWDM, a PW sample operating in 230–260 GHz is quickly obtained within only ~1 h. The predicted S-parameters of this PW sample by PINN clearly show excellent transmission characteristics, which are consistent with those simulated by CST. Experimental results of the PW sample provide strong support for the reliability of IPWDM. These facts demonstrate the superiority of IPWDM over time-consuming simulation softwares. This intelligent design pattern can ease researchers from extensive simulation work and lays a solid foundation for the future development of THz TWTs.

Abstract

Polymer-based actuators have gained extensive attention owing to their potential applications in aerospace, soft robotics, etc. However, poor mechanical properties, the inability of multi-stimuli response and programmable deformation, and the costly fabrication procedure have significantly hindered their practical application. Herein, these issues are overcome via a simple and scalable one-step molding method. The actuator is fabricated by hot-pressing commercial unidirectional carbon fiber/epoxy prepregs with a commodity PC membrane. Notable CTE differences between the CF and PC layers endow the bilayer actuator with fast and reliable actuation deformation. Benefiting from the high strength of CF, the actuator exhibits excellent mechanical performance. Moreover, the anisotropy of CF endows the actuator with design flexibility. Furthermore, the multifunction of CF makes the actuator capable of responding to thermal, optical, and electrical stimulation simultaneously. Based on the bilayer actuator, we successfully fabricated intelligent devices such as light-driven biomimetic flowers, intelligent grippers, and gesture-simulating apparatuses, which further validate the programmability and multi-stimuli response characteristics of this actuator. Strikingly, the prepared gripper possesses a grasping capacity approximately 31.2 times its own weight. 11. Metamaterial-Inspired Backward Wave Oscillator Using a Dual Band Coaxial Coupler

Abstract

A dual band metamaterial (MTM)-inspired backward wave oscillator (BWO) is developed by proposing a novel dual band coaxial coupler. The MTM-inspired BWO simultaneously exhibits dual band and miniaturization properties. The dual band property is confirmed by both transmission experiments and beam-wave interaction simulations. Meanwhile, the advantage of miniaturization results from the compact high frequency structure, i.e., its transverse and longitudinal sizes are about two-third smaller and slightly shorter than the previous BWO with the waveguide coupler, respectively. Further, the particle-in-cell results predict that the MTM-inspired BWO yields peak output powers of 114–137 kW at ~2.833 GHz and of 100–144 kW at ~4.527 GHz, respectively. Importantly, the power difference at the two frequencies is confined to ~1 dB, which is much smaller than that of the previous one with the waveguide coupler. These results confirm the feasibility of the compact dual band BWO, which might be applied to target recognition and plasma diagnostics.
