Background Chest radiography is the most common diagnostic imaging test in clinical medicine, and the cardiothoracic ratio (CTR) is a readily available and non-invasive tool with which to assess the volume status and cardiomegaly. However, it remains unknown whether CTR on chest radiography is associated with the incidence of HF hospitalization in AF patients remains unclear. Methods The Fushimi AF Registry is a community-based prospective survey of AF patients in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto, Japan. The inclusion criterion of the registry is the documentation of AF at 12-lead electrocardiogram or Holter monitoring at any time, and there are no exclusion criteria. We started to enroll patients from March 2011, and follow-up data were available for 4,489 patients by the end of August 2021. In the present study, 3,727 patients with available data of CTR were examined. We divided the patients into two groups according to their CTR at baseline; Higher group (CTR ≥50.0%, n=2,696) and Lower group (CTR Results The proportion of female was grater in Higher group, and the patients in Higher group were older. The patients in Higher group had higher prevalence of HF, hypertension and chronic kidney disease. During the median follow-up of 3,033 days, in Kaplan-Meier analysis, the incidence rates of HF hospitalization were higher in Higher group (Higher group: 2.5% per person-year vs. Lower group: 1.1%; p Conclusion In Japanese AF patients, patients with higher CTR had significantly higher incidence of HF hospitalization, regardless of the prevalence of prior hospitalization for HF. Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) increases the risk of incident heart failure (HF). Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is an important prognostic parameter in patients with HF. However, little is known regarding the association of LVEF with incident HF in patients with AF. Purpose The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between LVEF at enrollment and incidence of HF hospitalization during follow-up period in patients with AF. Methods The Fushimi AF Registry is a community-based prospective survey of patients with AF in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto, Japan. The inclusion criterion of the registry is the documentation of AF at 12-lead electrocardiogram or Holter monitoring at any time, and there are no exclusion criteria. We started to enroll patients from March 2011, and follow-up data were available for 4,489 patients by the end of August 2021. In the present study, we investigated 3,544 patients with the data of LVEF at enrollment. We divided the patients into 4 groups stratified by LVEF (reduced LVEF [LVEF Results Of 3,544 patients, the mean age was 73.6±10.7 years, 1,420 (40%) were female, 1,781 (50%) were paroxysmal AF, and 1,085 (30%) had pre-existing HF. The mean CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores were 2.1±1.3 and 3.4±1.7, respectively. The mean LVEF at enrollment was 63±12% (reduced LVEF: 197 [6%], mildly reduced LVEF: 250 [7%], slightly reduced LVEF: 532 [15%] and normal LVEF: 2,565 [72%], respectively). Patients with lower LVEF demonstrated lower prevalence of female and paroxysmal AF, and had a higher CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores (all P Conclusion LVEF at enrollment could stratify the incidence of HF hospitalization in patients with AF, suggesting the importance of measuring LVEF in all patients with AF. Even mildly (LVEF: 40–49%) or slightly (LVEF: 50–59%) reduced LVEF was independently associated with the risk of incident HF in patients with AF. The prototypical diluted magnetic semiconductor Cd1-xMnxTe is a spin glass (x0.6), but becomes ferromagnetic upon doping with a small amount of Cr atoms substituting for Mn. In order to investigate the origin of the ferromagnetism in Cd1-x-yMnxCryTe, we have studied its element specific magnetic properties by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Cr and Mn L2,3 edges. Thin films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy with a fixed Mn content of x = 0.2 and varying Cr content in the range of y = 0 - 0.04. Measured XAS and XMCD spectra indicate that both Cr and Mn atoms are divalent and that the ferromagnetic or superparamagnetic components of Cr and Mn are aligned in the same directions. The magnetization of Mn increases with increasing Cr content. These results can be explained if ferromagnetic interaction exists between neighboring Mn and Cr ions although interaction between Mn atoms is largely antiferromagnetic. We conclude that each ferromagnetic or superparamagnetic cluster consists of ferromagnetically coupled several Cr and a much larger number of Mn ions., 13 pages, 5 figures

To determine whether the pathological response to preoperative chemotherapy for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) can be predicted using 2-[Twenty-eight patients with PDAC who underwent only neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) before surgery were enrolled in the study. All patients had F-18 FDG-PET examinations before NAC. The resected specimen was pathologically evaluated according to the Classification of Pancreatic Carcinoma (7The mean SUVmax of the response group was higher than that of the non-response group (9.00 ± 1.78 versus 4.26 ± 2.35; p0.001). The optimal cut-off value of SUVmax was 9.28 for distinguishing the two groups. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for the prediction in the response group were 80%, 95.7%, and 92.9%, respectively.SUVmax on F-18 FDG-PET may be useful as a biomarker to predict the pathological response to NAC in patients with PDAC.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: An accurate assessment of the hemodynamics of an intracranial dural AVF is necessary for treatment planning. We aimed to investigate the utility of 4D-MRA based on superselective pseudocontinuous arterial spin-labeling with CENTRA-keyhole and view-sharing (4D-S-PACK) for the vessel-selective visualization of intracranial dural AVFs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the images of 21 patients (12 men and 9 women; mean age, 62.2 [SD,19.2] years) with intracranial dural AVFs, each of whom was imaged with DSA, 4D-S-PACK, and nonselective 4D-MRA based on pseudocontinuous arterial spin-labeling combined with CENTRA-keyhole and view-sharing (4D-PACK). The shunt location, venous drainage patterns, feeding artery identification, and Borden classification were evaluated by 2 observers using both MRA methods on separate occasions. Vessel selectivity was evaluated on 4D-S-PACK. RESULTS: Shunt locations were correctly evaluated in all 21 patients by both observers on both MRA methods. Perovskite-type manganites, which are well-known for their intriguing physical properties such as colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and half metalicity, have been considered as candidate materials for spintronics. However, their ferromagnetic (FM) properties are often suppressed in thin films when the thickness is reduced down to several monolayers (MLs). In order to investigate how the magnetic phases evolve near the paramagnetic (PM)-to-FM phase transition boundary, we have performed temperature-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) experiments on a La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO, $x=0.4$) thin film, whose thickness (8 ML) is close to the boundary between the FM-metallic and the PM-insulating phases. By utilizing the element-selectiveness of XMCD, we have quantitatively estimated the fractions of the PM and superparamagnetic (SPM) phases as well as the FM one as a function of temperature. Background Previous studies have suggested that proteinuria is independently associated with clinical outcomes in diabetic patients, irrespective of the presence of renal dysfunction. However, data regarding the impact of proteinuria on clinical outcomes in diabetic patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) are limited. Methods The Fushimi AF Registry is a community-based prospective survey of AF patients in our city in Japan. Follow-up data were available in 4,454 patients, and 634 diabetic patients with available data of proteinuria and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were examined. We compared the clinical background and outcomes between patients with proteinuria (n=251) and those without (n=383). Then, we divided the patients into 4 subgroups according to the presence of proteinuria and renal dysfunction, and compared the clinical outcomes between groups; group 1 (without proteinuria, eGFR ≥60 ml/min/1.73 m2; n=203), group 2 (with proteinuria, eGFR ≥60; n=96), group 3 (without proteinuria, eGFR Results Age was comparable between patients with or without proteinuria. Patients with proteinuria had higher prevalences of previous heart failure (HF), stroke/systemic embolism, hypertension and renal dysfunction. The prevalences of previous myocardial infarction, and major bleeding were similar between two groups. Aims To identify predictors of a therapeutic effect after transarterial chemoembolisation using drug-eluting beads (DEB-TACE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and methods Between January 2015 and July 2015, tumour variables and angiographic data were collected for 25 patients (49 target lesions) after they had undergone the DEB-TACE procedure for HCC. The therapeutic effect was evaluated according to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Cancer of the Liver at follow-up dynamic computed tomography (CT) performed within 1–4 months after the procedure. A p Results On a target lesion basis, the objective response (TE3/4) rate was 63.3% (31 of 49). On univariate analysis, larger size (≥2 cm) was a predictor of an objective response ( p =0.029). The tumour location of the medial (segment 4) or caudate (segment 1) lobe also indicated a poor therapeutic effect (TE1/2), but not at the level of significance ( p =0.051). Multivariate analysis identified tumour size (odds ratio, 8.60; 95% confidence interval, 1.87–62.8) and tumour location (odds ratio, 12.2; 95% confidence interval, 2.12–129.8) as significant factors associated with a therapeutic effect. On a patient basis, 10 of 25 (40%) patients showed complete response/partial response. There were no significant differences between complete response/partial response and stable disease/progressive disease regarding age, gender, tumour markers, history of previous treatment, Child–Pugh class, T-stage, or Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer Staging. Conclusion A short-term therapeutic effect was associated with tumour size and location on a target lesion basis.

Aim To clarify whether the heterogeneity of non-cancerous liver parenchyma (NLP) in the hepatobiliary phase on gadoxetic acid enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is correlated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. Materials and methods Institutional review board approval was obtained, and the requirements for informed consent were waived for this retrospective study. The imaging characteristics of 84 patients with chronic liver disease who underwent gadoxetic acid-enhanced 3T MRI between January 2013 and October 2014 were examined retrospectively. For the evaluation of the heterogeneity of the intensity in the hepatobiliary phase, the largest possible region of interest was placed on the NLP, and the skewness and kurtosis were calculated using ImageJ software. Skewness is the degree of asymmetry of a histogram, and kurtosis is a measure of the peak. Based on the median values of kurtosis and skewness, the patients were classified into four categories and the categories were compared between the 49 patients with HCC (HCC group) and the 35 patients without HCC (non-HCC group). Results Kurtosis was significantly higher in the HCC group compared to the non-HCC group (1.19±1.15 versus 0.43±0.83; p=0.0006). Skewness was significantly lower in the HCC group than in the non-HCC group (1.19±1.15 versus 0.43±0.83; p=0.0152). In a multivariate logistic analysis, the category showing lower-than-the-median (−0.1185) skewness and higher-than-the-median (0.547) kurtosis was significantly and independently associated with HCC development (p=0.0031). Conclusion The heterogeneity of NLP in the hepatobiliary phase on gadoxetic acid enhanced MRI may reflect the development of HCC.

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is characterized by increased serum levels of IgG4, a lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate composed of IgG4-positive plasma cells, storiform fibrosis, obliterative phlebitis, and mild to moderate eosinophilia [1]. IgG4-related sclerosing cholangitis (IgG4-SC) is a biliary lesion associated with IgG4-RD, which is frequently seen in elderly men, characterized by obstructive jaundice owing to a bile duct stricture and responds well to steroid therapy [2]. Recently, the first clinical diagnostic criteria for IgG4-SC were proposed in Japan [3]. As in the diagnostic items of the 2012 IgG4-SC diagnostic criteria, biliary tract imaging of IgG4-SC reveals diffuse or segmental narrowing of the intrahepatic and/or extrahepatic bile duct associated with thickening of the bile duct wall [3].

The biological features of cystic pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) remain unclear. The aim of this study was to clarify the clinicopathological characteristics of non-functioning PNETs (NF-PNETs) with a cystic component.The medical records of 75 patients with NF-PNETs who had undergone resection in our institution were retrospectively reviewed. Clinicopathological factors were compared between PNETs with and without a cystic component. Expression of somatostatin 2 receptor (SSTR-2) was also analyzed.Cystic PNETs were diagnosed in 14 patients (19%). The proportion of men was significantly higher for cystic than solid PNETs (79% vs. 44%, P 0.05) and cystic PNETs were significantly larger than solid PNETs (25 mm vs. 17 mm, P 0.01). However, there were no significant differences in the prevalence of lymph node metastases (14% vs. 10%, P = 0.64), hepatic metastasis (7% vs. 3%, P = 0.54), or disease-free survival rate (both 86%, P = 0.29) between PNETs with and without a cystic component. SSTR-2 expression was more frequently observed in PNETs with a cystic component than in those without (100% vs. 70%, P 0.01).Although cystic PNETs were larger upon diagnosis than solid PNETs in this study, prognosis after surgical resection did not differ significantly between these types of PNET. Somatostatin receptor scintigraphy and somatostatin analogues may be more useful for diagnosing and treating cystic PNETs, respectively.

We have investigated the orbital states of the orbital-glassy (short-range orbital ordered) spinel vanadate Co$_{1.21}$V$_{1.79}$O$_{4}$ using x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and subsequent configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation. From the sign of the XMCD spectra, it was found that the spin magnetic moment of the Co ion is aligned parallel to the applied magnetic field and that of the V ion anti-parallel to it, consistent with neutron scattering studies. It was revealed that the excess Co ions at the octahedral site take the trivalent low-spin state, and induce a random potential to the V sublattice. The orbital magnetic moment of the V ion is small although finite, suggesting that the ordered orbitals mainly consists of real-number orbitals., 7 pages, 6 figures

To compare perfusion computed tomography (CT) with reconstructed image from source data using low-dose contrast agent and conventional 320-row CT for the evaluation of renal tumours.Twenty-eight patients underwent conventional CT (C-CT) and 26 patients underwent perfusion CT with low-dose (40 ml) contrast agent. Image noise, arterial visualisation, the sharpness of the corticomedullary junction (CMJ), and overall image quality were each assessed using a four-point scale. The tumour detection rate for lesions4 cm (n=66) was also evaluated. Quantitative image parameters including image noise and the contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRs) of the renal artery and CMJ were measured. The volume CT dose index (CTDI), dose-length product (DLP), and size-specific dose estimate (SSDE) were also recorded.Although the image noise of perfusion CT was higher than that of C-CT and the overall image quality of perfusion CT was lower than that of C-CT, the arterial visualisation score of perfusion CT was significantly higher than that of C-CT. The CMJ sharpness scores of the two techniques were equivalent. Sensitivity and positive predictive values were also equivalent with respect to tumour detection. The CNRs of both the left and right renal arteries were significantly higher on perfusion CT than on C-CT. The CTDI, DLP, and SSDE of perfusion CT were significantly lower than those of C-CT.Perfusion CT using low-dose contrast agent preserved arterial visualisation and the tumour detection rate and achieved a low radiation dose despite image quality degradation and image noise.

Background Several studies have suggested that decreased muscle volume is associated with attenuation of immune function. The recipient's immune system is responsible for rejection of transplanted organs, which is a major cause of graft loss after transplantation. We aimed to determine whether muscle volume is correlated with graft survival after pancreas transplantation (PT). Methods Forty-three patients underwent PT for type 1 diabetes mellitus at our institution from August 2001 to May 2016. The quantity of skeletal muscle was evaluated using the psoas muscle mass index (PMI). The correlation between PMI and outcome after PT was assessed. Results A total of 32 and 11 recipients underwent simultaneous pancreas–kidney transplantation (SPK) and PT alone/pancreas after kidney transplantation, respectively. Patients with a surviving graft showed a significantly lower PMI than those with graft loss (P = .0451). We divided the recipients into two groups according to the PMI cutoff values, which were established using receiver operating characteristic curves. The cumulative graft survival rate was significantly higher in patients with a low PMI (P = .0206). A multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that a low PMI (P = .0075) is an independent predictive factor for better graft survival. A low PMI was not a significant predictive factor for acute rejection, but was an independent predictive factor for graft survival after the first acute rejection (P = .0025). Conclusions Our data suggest that muscle volume could be a predictor of graft survival after PT.

Magnetic anisotropies of ferromagnetic thin films are induced by epitaxial strain from the substrate via strain-induced anisotropy in the orbital magnetic moment and that in the spatial distribution of spin-polarized electrons. However, the preferential orbital occupation in ferromagnetic metallic La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films studied by x-ray linear dichroism (XLD) has always been found out-of-plane for both tensile and compressive epitaxial strain and hence irrespective of the magnetic anisotropy. In order to resolve this mystery, we directly probed the preferential orbital occupation of spin-polarized electrons in LSMO thin films under strain by angle-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Anisotropy of the spin-density distribution was found to be in-plane for the tensile strain and out-of-plane for the compressive strain, consistent with the observed magnetic anisotropy. The ubiquitous out-of-plane preferential orbital occupation seen by XLD is attributed to the occupation of both spin-up and spin-down out-of-plane orbitals in the surface magnetic dead layer., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

The strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of $L{\rm1_0}$-ordered FePt has been the subject of extensive studies for a long time. However, it is not known which element, Fe or Pt, mainly contributes to the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE). We have investigated the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moments of Fe 3$d$ and Pt 5$d$ electrons in $L{\rm1_0}$-ordered FePt thin films by Fe and Pt $L_{2,3}$-edge x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements for samples with various degrees of long-range chemical order $S$. Fe $L_{2,3}$-edge XMCD showed that the orbital magnetic moment was larger when the magnetic field was applied perpendicular to the film than parallel to it, and that the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moment increased with $S$. Pt $L_{2,3}$-edge XMCD also showed that the orbital magnetic moment was smaller when the magnetic field was applied perpendicular to the film than parallel to it, opposite to the Fe $L_{2,3}$-edge XMCD results although the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moment increases with $S$ like the Fe edge. These results are qualitatively consistent with the first-principles calculation by Solovyev ${\it et\ al.}$ [Phys. Rev. B $\bf{52}$, 13419 (1995).], which also predicts the dominant contributions of Pt 5$d$ to the magnetic anisotropy energy rather than Fe 3$d$ due to the strong spin-orbit coupling and the small spin splitting of the Pt 5$d$ bands in $L{\rm1_0}$-ordered FePt., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Amorphous Fe-Y-B thin films have been successfully fabricated by direct-current magnetron sputtering, and the effects of annealing treatment on the microstructure and magnetic properties, especially coercivity and magneto-impedance ratio, were investigated systematically. After low-temperature heat treatments (below 673 K), films still remain amorphous structure and their magnetic properties were largely enhanced due to stress release, e. g., the maximum magneto-impedance ratio increases from about 5.6-46.6% and the coercivity decreases from about 7.7-2.2 Oe for as-deposited film and the film annealed at 573 K for 1 h, respectively. After high-temperature heat treatment at 673 K, crystallization occurs, deteriorating magnetic properties (magnetic softness and magneto-impedance features) of the film. The Fe-Y-B thin film annealed at 573 K for 1 h, possessing good magneto-impedance effect and soft magnetic properties, might have potential application in micro-sized magnetic actuators. Magnetic anisotropy of epitaxially grown thin films is affected by the strain from the substrates due to a combined effect of distorted electronic structure and spin-orbit interaction (SOI). As an inverse process, one expects an anisotropy of the electronic structure induced by magnetization in the presence of SOI. We have studied the charge-density anisotropy induced by magnetization in thin films of the ferromagnetic metal La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ via x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD). XMLD measurements on thin films with various thicknesses have shown that the XMLD intensity is proportional to the square of the ferromagnetic moment. Using the XMLD sum rule and cluster-model calculation, it has been shown that more Mn 3$d$ electrons are distributed in orbitals elongated along the direction parallel to the spin polarization than in orbitals elongated in the direction perpendicular to it. The cluster-model calculation has shown that the effect of tensile strain from the SrTiO$_3$ substrate on the XMLD spectra is also consistent with the observed XMLD spectral line shapes., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Recent progress in endoscopic techniques has revealed that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) often cause ulcers in the small intestine in humans, but effective therapy is not available at present. In the present study, we investigated the effects of feeding condition and the amount of dietary fiber (DF) in the diet on the formation of gastrointestinal ulcers induced by NSAIDs in dogs. Several types of diets containing various percentages of DF were given to dogs. Indomethacin (1 or 3 mg/kg, p.o.), ketoprofen (2 mg/kg, s.c.), or fulnixin (1 mg/kg, s.c.) was administered once daily at 10 a.m. after a morning meal or without a morning meal (fasted condition) for 3 - 7 days. Gastrointestinal lesions were examined 24 h after the final dose of the drugs. When indomethacin (3 mg/kg) was administered after a morning meal (fed condition) for 7 days, it produced many lesions in the small intestine. However, when it was given in the fasted condition without the morning meal, the lesions were markedly decreased. All the NSAIDs given after feeding of regular dry food containing 6% DF once a day for 3 days produced many lesions in the small intestine. The lesions were decreased or increased in dogs given prescription diets containing low DF (1.1%) and high DF (15.4%), respectively. Furthermore, lesions were not observed in dogs given canned diet containing very low DF (0.1%), whereas lesions appeared again in dogs given canned diet supplemented with cellulose (3 or 10%) but not with pectin (10%). These results suggested that both feeding condition and insoluble DF, such as cellulose in the diet, play an important role in the formation of NSAID-induced small intestinal lesions, and that a diet with no or low amounts of DF may decrease gastrointestinal side-effects associated with the use of NSAIDs.

We investigate the local electronic structure and magnetic properties of the group-IV-based ferromagnetic semiconductor, Ge1−xFex (GeFe), using soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Our results show that the doped Fe 3d electrons are strongly hybridized with the Ge 4p states, and have a large orbital magnetic moment relative to the spin magnetic moment; i.e., morb/mspin ≈ 0.1. We find that nanoscale local ferromagnetic regions, which are formed through ferromagnetic exchange interactions in the high-Fe-content regions of the GeFe films, exist even at room temperature, well above the Curie temperature of 20–100 K. We observe the intriguing nanoscale expansion of the local ferromagnetic regions with decreasing temperature, followed by a transition of the entire film into a ferromagnetic state at the Curie temperature.

To clarify the frequency of fatty change in moderately and poorly differentiated hepatocellular carcinomas (mHCCs and pHCCs) and its relationship to arterial blood flow.One hundred and thirty-six surgically resected HCC lesions were studied. All patients had undergone dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with chemical-shift-encoded water-fat imaging (CSI). The presence of fat was identified by a signal drop-off on CSI and confirmed at pathology. Lesions were classified into four groups in the arterial phase; G1, hypointense; G2, isointense; G3, slightly and heterogeneously hyperintense; G4, markedly and homogeneously hyperintense. The number of cumulative arteries (CAs) in the tumours in the pathology examination were counted.A fat component was observed significantly more frequently in the pHCCs (13/21; 61.9%) compared to the mHCCs (32/101; 31.7%; p=0.013). The numbers of lesions in each group were as follows: (G1, G2, G3, G4) = (18, 9, 23, 4) in the HCCs with fat; (1, 6, 24, 51) in the HCCs without fat (p0.001); (5, 5, 18, 4) in the mHCCs with fat; (0, 3, 19, 47) in the mHCCs without fat (p0.001); (11, 0, 2, 0) in the pHCCs with fat; (0, 2, 3, 3) in the pHCCs without fat (p=0.001). The number of CAs in the fat-containing HCCs (5.5±2.9) was significantly lower than that in the HCCs without fat (10.8±5.3; p0.001).A fat component was more commonly observed in the pHCCs than in the mHCCs. The present results showed a possible mechanism of fatty change in mHCCs and pHCCs in relation to decreased arterial blood supply.

Aim To evaluate the effectiveness of motion-sensitised driven-equilibrium (MSDE)-prepared balanced magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) in a gadolinium ethoxybenzyl diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA)-enhanced study compared to conventional T2-weighted MRCP. Materials and methods Fifteen patients (seven male and eight female patients) prospectively underwent conventional three-dimensional turbo spin-echo T2-weighted MRCP and MSDE-balanced MRCP using a 1.5 T MRI system after hepatobiliary phase image acquisition. For quantitative evaluation, the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the common hepatic duct to liver tissue was calculated. For qualitative analysis, two radiologists evaluated the depiction of the biliary system and main pancreatic duct (MPD) using a scoring system. Signal suppression of the portal vein (PV) and hepatic vein (HV) on MSDE-balanced MRCP was also scored. Results MSDE-balanced MRCP showed significantly higher CNR than T2-weighted MRCP. For all biliary structures, the mean depiction scores of MSDE-balanced MRCP were significantly higher than those of T2-weighted MRCP, whereas the mean depiction score of MPD with MSDE-balanced MRCP was significantly lower than that of T2-weighted MRCP. Signal suppression of the PV and HV was thought to be clinically sufficient. Conclusions MSDE-balanced MRCP more clearly depicted biliary structures compared with T2-weighted MRCP in a Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced study. This sequence may be utilised for routine MRCP on Gd-EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI.

We have studied the electronic and magnetic states of Co and Mn atoms at the interface of the Co$_\mathrm{2}$Mn$_{\beta}$Si (CMS)/MgO ($\beta$=0.69, 0.99, 1.15 and 1.29) magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In particular, the Mn composition ($\beta$) dependences of the Mn and Co magnetic moments were investigated. The experimental spin magnetic moments of Mn, $m_\mathrm{spin}$(Mn), derived from XMCD weakly decreased with increasing Mn composition $\beta$ in going from Mn-deficient to Mn-rich CMS films. This behavior was explained by first-principles calculations based on the antisite-based site-specific formula unit (SSFU) composition model, which assumes the formation of only antisite defect, not vacancies, to accommodate off-stoichiometry. Furthermore, the experimental spin magnetic moments of Co, $m_\mathrm{spin}$(Co), also weakly decreased with increasing Mn composition. This behavior was consistently explained by the antisite-based SSFU model, in particular, by the decrease in the concentration of Co$_\mathrm{Mn}$ antisites detrimental to the half-metallicity of CMS with increasing $\beta$. Thin films of the ferromagnetic metal SrRuO3 (SRO) show a varying easy magnetization axis depending on the epitaxial strain and undergo a metal-to-insulator transition with decreasing film thickness. We have investigated the magnetic properties of SRO thin films with varying thicknesses fabricated on SrTiO3(001) substrates by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Ru M2,3 edge. Results have shown that, with decreasing film thickness, the film changes from ferromagnetic to non-magnetic around 3monolayer thickness, consistent with previous magnetization and magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. The orbital magnetic moment perpendicular to the film was found to be ~ 0.1{\mu}B/Ru atom, and remained nearly unchanged with decreasing film thickness while the spin magnetic moment decreases. We have investigated the spin and orbital magnetic moments of Fe in FePt nanoparticles in the $L$1${}_{0}$-ordered phase coated with $\mathrm{Si}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe ${L}_{2,3}$ absorption edges. Using XMCD sum rules, we evaluated the ratio of the orbital magnetic moment (${M}_{\mathrm{orb}}$) to the effective spin magnetic moment (${M}_{\mathrm{spin}}^{\mathrm{eff}}$) of Fe to be ${M}_{\mathrm{orb}}/{M}_{\mathrm{spin}}^{\mathrm{eff}}=0.08$. This ${M}_{\mathrm{orb}}/{M}_{\mathrm{spin}}^{\mathrm{eff}}$ value is comparable to the value (0.09) obtained for FePt nanoparticles prepared by gas phase condensation, and is larger than the values ($\ensuremath{\sim}$0.05) obtained for FePt thin films, indicating a high degree of $L$1${}_{0}$ order. The hysteretic behavior of the FePt component of the magnetization was measured by XMCD. The magnetic coercivity (${H}_{c}$) was found to be as large as 1.8 T at room temperature, $\ensuremath{\sim}$3 times larger than the thin film value and $\ensuremath{\sim}$50 times larger than that of the gas phase condensed nanoparticles. The hysteresis curve is well explained by the Stoner-Wohlfarth model for noninteracting single-domain nanoparticles with the ${H}_{c}$ distributed from 1 to 5 T.

Metallic transition-metal oxides undergo a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) as the film thickness decreases across a critical thickness of several monolayers (MLs), but its driving mechanism remains controversial. We have studied the thickness-dependent MIT of the ferromagnetic metal ${\mathrm{La}}_{0.6}$${\mathrm{Sr}}_{0.4}$${\mathrm{MnO}}_{3}$ by x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. As the film thickness was decreased across the critical thickness of the MIT (6--8 ML), a gradual decrease of the ferromagnetic signals and a concomitant increase of paramagnetic signals were observed, while the Mn valence abruptly decreased towards ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{3+}$. These observations suggest that the ferromagnetic phase gradually and most likely inhomogeneously turns into the paramagnetic phase and both phases abruptly become insulating at the critical thickness.

${\text{NiFe}}_{2}$${\text{O}}_{4}$/${\text{BaTiO}}_{3}$ (NFO/BTO) multilayer heterostructures grown on (001)-${\text{SrTiO}}_{3}$ substrates with alternating ferroelectric BTO and ferrimagnetic NFO layers exhibit magnetoelectric (ME) coupling, which increases with the number of layers and, hence, with the number of NFO/BTO interfaces. We have studied the local electronic and magnetic states of Ni and Fe ions in the NFO/BTO multilayers with various NFO and BTO thicknesses by x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. With an increasing number of layers, both Ni and Fe magnetic moments decrease. With decreasing NFO layer thickness, the average magnetic moment of Ni decreases, while the average magnetic moment of Fe ions remains unaffected, meaning that Ni ions at the interface lose ferromagnetic moments. This suggests that the enhancement of ME coupling is associated with Ni ions at the interface whose ferromagnetic behavior is weakened through hybridization with the BTO electronic states.

We have studied the electronic structure of Ba(Fe${}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$Mn${}_{x}$)${}_{2}$As${}_{2}$ ($x=0.08$), which fails to become a superconductor in spite of the formal hole doping like Ba${}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$K${}_{x}$Fe${}_{2}$As${}_{2}$, with photoemission spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). With decreasing temperature, a transition from the paramagnetic phase to the antiferromagnetic phase was clearly observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. XAS results indicated that the substituted Mn atoms form a strongly hybridized ground state. Resonance-photoemission spectra at the Mn ${L}_{3}$ edge revealed that the Mn $3d$ partial density of states is distributed over a wide energy range of 2--13 eV below the Fermi level (${E}_{F}$), with little contribution around ${E}_{F}$. This indicates that the dopant Mn 3$d$ states are localized in spite of the strong Mn $3d$--As $4p$ hybridization and split into the occupied and unoccupied parts due to the on-site Coulomb and exchange interaction. The absence of superconductivity in Ba(Fe${}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$Mn${}_{x}$)${}_{2}$As${}_{2}$ can thus be ascribed both to the absence of carrier doping in the FeAs plane and to the stabilization of the competing G-type antiferromagnetic order by the Mn impurities.

The coercivity of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ thin films can be enhanced by Ru substitution for Mn. In order to elucidate its mechanism, we performed soft x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism measurements at the Ru M$_{2,3}$ and Mn L$_{2,3}$ edges. We found that the spin direction of Ru and Mn are opposite and that Ru has a finite orbital magnetic moment. Cluster-model analysis indicated that the finite orbital magnetic moment as well as the reduced spin moment of Ru result from local lattice distortion caused by epitaxial strain from the SrTiO$_3$ substrate in the presence of spin-orbit interaction., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, accepted Applied Physics Letters

BiFeO$_3$ (BFO) shows both ferroelectricity and magnetic ordering at room temperature but its ferromagnetic component, which is due to spin canting, is negligible. Substitution of transition-metal atoms such as Co for Fe is known to enhance the ferromagnetic component in BFO. In order to reveal the origin of such magnetization enhancement, we performed soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of BiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O$_3$ ({\it x} = 0 to 0.30) (BFCO) thin films grown on LaAlO$_3$(001) substrates. The XAS results indicated that the Fe and Co ions are in the Fe$^{3+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ states. The XMCD results showed that the Fe ions show ferromagnetism while the Co ions are antiferromagnetic at room temperature. The XAS and XMCD measurements also revealed that part of the Fe$^{3+}$ ions are tetrahedrally co-ordinated by oxygen ions but that the XMCD signals of the octahedrally coordinated Fe$^{3+}$ ions increase with Co content. The results suggest that an impurity phase such as the ferrimagnetic $\gamma$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ which exists at low Co concentration decreases with increasing Co concentration and that the ferromagnetic component of the Fe$^{3+}$ ion in the octrahedral crystal fields increases with Co concentration, probably reflecting the increased canting of the Fe$^{3+}$ ions., Comment: Accepted in J. We studied the electronic structure of SrRuO${}_{3}$ using several spectroscopic techniques. These include (resonant) photoemission, x-ray absorption, and optical conductivity. The experimental results were interpreted using an extended cluster model, which takes into account electron correlation and the Ru 4$d$-O 2$p$ covalence. The analysis shows that this material is in the negative charge transfer regime, where the ground state is dominated by the $4{d}^{5}\underline{L}$ configuration with an occupation of 47$%$. This is mainly due to the relatively large crystal field and exchange splitting in the Ru 4$d$ states. The electronic structure of SrRuO${}_{3}$ is strongly influenced by the Ru 4$d$-O 2$p$ hybridization. Thus, the oxygen states should be explicitly considered in the analysis of the physical properties of this system. However, correlation effects are also important in this system giving rise to the coherent peak in the valence band spectra.

We have studied magnetism in anatase Ti$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O$_{2-\delta}$ ({\it x} = 0.05) thin films with various electron carrier densities, by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Co $L_{2,3}$ absorption edges. We report on x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of the paramagnetic (Mn,Co)-co-doped ZnO and ferromagnetic (Fe,Co)-co-doped ZnO nano-particles. Both the surface-sensitive total-electron-yield mode and the bulk-sensitive total-fluorescence-yield mode have been employed to extract the valence and spin states of the surface and inner core regions of the nano-particles. XAS spectra reveal that significant part of the doped Mn and Co atoms are found in the trivalent and tetravalent state in particular in the surface region while majority of Fe atoms are found in the trivalent state both in the inner core region and surface region. The XMCD spectra show that the Fe$^{3+}$ ions in the surface region give rise to the ferromagnetism while both the Co and Mn ions in the surface region show only paramagnetic behaviors. The transition-metal atoms in the inner core region do not show magnetic signals, meaning that they are antiferromagnetically coupled. The present result combined with the previous results on transition-metal-doped ZnO nano-particles and nano-wires suggest that doped holes, probably due to Zn vacancy formation at the surfaces of the nano-particles and nano-wires, rather than doped electrons are involved in the occurrence of ferromagnetism in these systems., Comment: Proceedings of "XAFS theory and nanoparticles"

Background: The detection rate of hepatic falciform ligament artery (FLA) has been reported as ranging from 2–25%. The rate of FLA on laparotomy, however, is reported to be higher, at 68%. Purpose: To compare the detection rate of FLA on computed tomography hepatic arteriography (CTHA) with that on angiography and dynamic CT, and to clarify the clinical significance of FLA in patients with chronic liver disease. Material and Methods: 126 consecutive patients underwent CTHA angiography and dynamic CT to evaluate suspected liver tumors. Liver function was classified as follows: normal, n=5; Child-Pugh class A, n=94; B, n=21; and C, n=6. All CT images were obtained using multidetector (MDCT) scanners (Aquilion; Toshiba, Tokyo, Japan). For CTHA, CT images were obtained during contrast material injection through the left hepatic, proper, or common hepatic artery. On CT, FLAs were retrospectively identified within the hepatic falciform ligament and the hepatic round ligament by the paging method on a workstation (TWS-5000; Toshiba, Tokyo, Japan). The detection rates were compared among the three modalities (hepatic arterial phase of dynamic CT, CTHA, and angiography). The calibers of FLA were also correlated with the hepatic function of the patients. Results: The detection rates of FLA by angiography, dynamic CT, and CTHA were 37% (47/126), 10% (13/126), and 77% (97/126), respectively. The calibers of FLA increased as the hepatic function deteriorated ( P=0.001). Conclusion: The detection rates of FLA with CTHA are far higher than those with angiography and dynamic CT. Careful interpretation with recognition of FLA on CTHA images is important, as inadvertent embolization or chemotherapeutic infusion of the FLA may result in supraumbilical skin rash.

Background: Most of the recently developed microcatheters for abdominal angiography still have large diameters at their trailing ends, and thus cannot be used for microcoil embolization in combination with a 3-French (F) system. Purpose: To evaluate the in vitro passage of microcoils through a newly developed 2-F microcatheter (Meister Cath Superselective Plus, MC6) that is compatible with a downsized coaxial catheter system (3-F system) in an experimental study. Material and Methods: We evaluated the passage of microcoils through MC6 within a blood vessel model using the saline flush technique. Six types of microcoils and 17 size variations (maximal curled diameter 2–10 mm, total length 20–140 mm) were used. We evaluated the passage and post-deployment shape of the microcoils as well as the volume of saline required to flush them. Results: In the experimental study, all microcoils passed through the MC6 and deployed in a satisfactory manner without catheter occlusion. The mean volumes of saline required to flush the TORNADO ( n=1), Reverse TORNADO ( n=6), HILAL ( n=1), Micronester ( n=3), VortX ( n=4), and C-Stopper Coil ( n=2) were 0.7 ml, 0.58±0.20 ml, 0.5 ml, 0.57±0.058 ml, 3.5±1.5 ml, and 0.70±0.14 ml, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in the mean volume of saline required between the VortX and Reverse TORNADO ( P=0.029), and between the VortX and C-Stopper Coil ( P=0.031). The VortX required the greatest volume of saline. Conclusion: Microcoil embolization through a 3-F system appears to be feasible for the coils examined in this study.

To reduce the effective k-value to less than 2.7 for the 45-nm node, direct CMP of a porous SiOC film (k = 2.3-2.6) without a protective cap layer was applied to Cu damascene fabrication by using a damage-less sacrificial film process. The key is controlling the molecular size of surfactants in the CMP slurries or cleaning chemicals, which are related to the moisture uptake and watermark generation of hydrophobic porous SiOC films. We found that the selectivity of CoWP deposition improved on a hydrophobic SiOC surface

CT of the liver in three patients, all of whom had immunoserologically confirmed A. suum infection, were retrospectively reviewed. Twenty-five lesions were identified in total. Two radiologists analyzed CT findings in a consensus fashion, with particular interest in the margin, shape, and location of the lesions. Hepatic lesions were ill-defined (22 of 25), small (3-35 mm; average, 11 mm), and nodular (18 of 25) or wedge (three of 25) in shape. Most were located in periportal (16 of 25) or subcapsular (six of 25) regions. Hepatic nodules due to visceral larva migrans of A. suum were located mainly in periportal or subcapsular regions, which may represent periportal eosinophilic granuloma, its pathologic feature. The results were considered to represent the pathophysiology of this entity.

A case of uterine lipoleiomyoma demonstrated on computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is described and usefulness of MRI is discussed in diagnosing this entity.
