Abstract

In phase-shifting profilometry (PSP), any motion during the acquisition of fringe patterns can introduce errors because it assumes both the object and measurement system are stationary. Therefore, we propose a method to pixel-wise reduce the errors when the measurement system is in motion due to a motorized linear stage. The proposed method introduces motion-induced error reduction algorithm, which leverages the motor's encoder and pinhole model of the camera and projector. 3D shape measurement is possible with only three fringe patterns by applying geometric constraints of the digital fringe projection system. We address the mismatch problem due to the motion-induced camera pixel disparities and reduce phase-shift errors. These processes are easy to implement and require low computational cost. Experimental results demonstrate that the presented method effectively reduces the errors even in non-uniform motion., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved empagliflozin for reducing cardiovascular mortality and heart failure (HF) hospitalization in patients with both HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). However, limited data are available on the generalizability of empagliflozin to clinical practice. Therefore, we evaluated real-world eligibility and potential cost-effectiveness based on a nationwide prospective HF registry. METHODS: A total of 3,108 HFrEF and 2,070 HFpEF patients from the Korean Acute Heart Failure (KorAHF) registry were analyzed. Eligibility was estimated by inclusion and exclusion criteria of EMPagliflozin outcomE tRial in Patients With chrOnic heaRt Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction (EMPEROR-Reduced) and EMPagliflozin outcomE tRial in Patients With chrOnic heaRt Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction (EMPEROR-Preserved) trials and by FDA & EMA label criteria. The cost-utility analysis was done using a Markov model to project the lifetime medical cost and quality-adjusted life year (QALY). RESULTS: Among the KorAHF patients, 91.4% met FDA & EMA label criteria, while 44.7% met the clinical trial criteria. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of empagliflozin was calculated at US$6,764 per QALY in the overall population, which is far below a threshold of US$18,182 per QALY. The cost-effectiveness benefit was more evident in patients with HFrEF (US$5,012 per QALY) than HFpEF (US$8,971 per QALY). CONCLUSION: There is a large discrepancy in real-world eligibility for empagliflozin between FDA & EMA labels and clinical trial criteria. Empagliflozin is cost-effective in HF patients regardless of ejection fraction in South Korea health care setting. The efficacy and safety of empagliflozin in real-world HF patients should be further investigated for a broader range of clinical applications. Abstract

We study the appearance of a boundary condition along an interface between two regions, one with constant diffusivity $1$ and the other with diffusivity $\eps>0$, when $\eps\to0$. In particular, we take Fick's diffusion law in a context of reaction-diffusion equation with bistable nonlinearity and show that the limit of the reaction-diffusion equation satisfies the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition along the interface. 22. Effects of Twin-screw Extrusion Temperatures on Structure and Physicochemical Properties of Corn Starch

Abstract

As changes in the melting behavior of starch in the extruder affect the physical properties of the extrudate. exploring the melting behavior during starch extrusion is of great significant for the production of ideal thermoplastic starch-based materials. Effects of different extrusion temperatures (60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 ℃) on the structure and physicochemical properties of corn starch were investigated. The results showed that under high temperature and mechanical shear, the starch granules were fragmented and the granule size was reduced. The hydrogen bonds within starch molecules were broken, which made starch easier to bind with water molecules, to improve the hydration properties of thermoplastic starch (TPS). As the temperature increased, the content of amylose increased, and the relative crystallinity (RC) and double-helix order (DO) decreased, indicating that the long-range and short-range ordered structures of corn starch were destroyed during heating. The high temperature treatment of the extruder reduced the enthalpy of TPS and destroyed the ability of starch paste to form a gel network. The samples had a weak gelation behavior, and the rigidity and elasticity were weakened. In conclusion, the temperature of twin-screw extrusion changed the starch particle structure, crystalline structure, hydration and rheological properties to different degrees. This study has provided theoretical basis and new ideas for extruding high quality thermoplastic starch materials.

Abstract

The Toxicology Investigators Consortium (ToxIC) Core Registry was established by the American College of Medical Toxicology in 2010. The Core Registry collects data from participating sites with the agreement that all bedside and telehealth medical toxicology consultations will be entered. This twelfth annual report summarizes the registry's 2021 data and activity with its additional 8552 cases. Cases were identified for inclusion in this report by a query of the ToxIC database for any case entered from January 1 to December 31, 2021. Detailed data was collected from these cases and aggregated to provide information, which included demographics, reason for medical toxicology evaluation, agent and agent class, clinical signs and symptoms, treatments and antidotes administered, mortality, and whether life support was withdrawn. Gender distribution included 50.4% of cases in females, 48.2% of cases in males, and 1.4% of cases in transgender or gender non-conforming individuals. Non-opioid analgesics were the most commonly reported agent class (14.9%), followed by opioids (13.1%). Acetaminophen was the most common agent reported. Fentanyl was the most common opioid reported and was responsible for the greatest number of fatalities. There were 120 fatalities, comprising 1.4% of all cases. Major trends in demographics and exposure characteristics remained similar to past years' reports. Sub-analyses were conducted to describe new demographic characteristics, including marital status, housing status and military service, the continued COVID-19 pandemic and related toxicologic exposures, and novel substances of exposure.

25. University-Level Students' Stances, Communication of Negative Emotions, and L2 Swearing with Respect to Emi during Classroom Interaction

Abstract

This study longitudinally examined university-level students' stances, communication of negative emotions, and L2 swearing with regard to English-medium instruction (EMI). Sixteen graduate students enrolled in an English-medium course in a university in Korea participated in the study. The research instruments were classroom observations, reflective journal writing, and in-depth, semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that there were three occasions, during small group discussions, on each of which one student articulated her/his language ideologies against EMI and expressed her/his anger in Korean, and swore in English. These occasions occurred due to a student's opposition to EMI, a student's opposition to EMI preceded by her own support for it, and a student's opposition to EMI faced with another student's support for it, respectively. What affected the occasions included their teacher's idiosyncratic focus on general vocabulary in addition to subject-specific vocabulary (a factor common to these students), and challenges intrinsic to EMI, face, and the teacher's excessive academic push.

Abstract

We study an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) identification network equipped with an energy harvesting (EH) technique. In the network, the UAVs harvest energy through radio frequency (RF) signals transmitted from ground control stations (GCSs) and then transmit their identification information to the ground receiver station (GRS). Specifically, we first derive a closed-form expression of the outage probability to evaluate the network performance. Then we obtain the closed-form expression of the optimal time allocation when the bandwidth is equally allocated to the UAVs. We also propose a fast-converging algorithm for time and the bandwidth allocation, which is necessary for the UAV environment with high mobility, to optimize the outage performance of EH-based UAV identification network. Abstract

To identify genetic determinants of airway dysfunction, we performed a transcriptome-wide association study for asthma by combining RNA-seq data from the nasal airway epithelium of 681 children, with UK Biobank genetic association data. Our airway analysis identified 95 asthma genes, 58 of which were not identified by transcriptome-wide association analyses using other asthma-relevant tissues. Among these genes were MUC5AC, an airway mucin, and FOXA3, a transcriptional driver of mucus metaplasia. Muco-ciliary epithelial cultures from genotyped donors revealed that the MUC5AC risk variant increases MUC5AC protein secretion and mucus secretory cell frequency. Airway transcriptome-wide association analyses for mucus production and chronic cough also identified MUC5AC. These cis-expression variants were associated with trans effects on expression; the MUC5AC variant was associated with upregulation of non-inflammatory mucus secretory network genes, while the FOXA3 variant was associated with upregulation of type-2 inflammation-induced mucus-metaplasia pathway genes. Our results reveal genetic mechanisms of airway mucus pathobiology.

50. Detecting Biological Locomotion in Video: A Computational Approach

Abstract

Animals locomote for various reasons: to search for food, find suitable habitat, pursue prey, escape from predators, or seek a mate. The grand scale of biodiversity contributes to the great locomotory design and mode diversity. Various creatures make use of legs, wings, fins and other means to move through the world. In this report, we refer to the locomotion of general biological species as biolocomotion. We present a computational approach to detect biolocomotion in unprocessed video. Significantly, the motion exhibited by the body parts of a biological entity to navigate through an environment can be modeled by a combination of an overall positional advance with an overlaid asymmetric oscillatory pattern, a distinctive signature that tends to be absent in non-biological objects in locomotion. We exploit this key trait of positional advance with asymmetric oscillation along with differences in an object's common motion (extrinsic motion) and localized motion of its parts (intrinsic motion) to detect biolocomotion. An algorithm is developed to measure the presence of these traits in tracked objects to determine if they correspond to a biological entity in locomotion. An alternative algorithm, based on generic features combined with learning is assembled out of components from allied areas of investigation, also is presented as a basis of comparison. A novel biolocomotion dataset encompassing a wide range of moving biological and non-biological objects in natural settings is provided. Also, biolocomotion annotations to an extant camouflage animals dataset are provided. Quantitative results indicate that the proposed algorithm considerably outperforms the alternative approach, supporting the hypothesis that biolocomotion can be detected reliably based on its distinct signature of positional advance with asymmetric oscillation and extrinsic/intrinsic motion dissimilarity.
