The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a Special Education course on pre-school teacher candidates' knowledge levels and perspectives towards inclusive practices as well as their willingness and self-confidence about working in an inclusive classroom. The single group pre-test- post-test design was conducted to see whether there was a change on the dependent variables. The study group consisted of 58 teacher candidates from a preschool teacher education program. The results of this study indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the knowledge of the participants from the pre-test to post test. Based on the post-test results, teacher candidates' willingness and self-confidence were significantly higher than the pre-test results. Limitations and implications for practice are presented.

Many students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience academic challenges and difficulties. These struggles are especially pronounced in mathematics with students with ASD performing significantly below than their peers without disabilities on measures of mathematical performance. The current study used a single case experimental design with concurrent multiple probe across students to investigate the effects of a point-of-view video modeling (POVM) intervention on accuracy of addition with regrouping word problems. The participants were three secondary grade level students with ASD. Findings showed that each student demonstrated considerable improvement during intervention over baseline levels, and subsequently sustaining their performance through the maintenance phase. Limitations, implications for practitioners and future research directions are presented.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of UDL training on general education teacher candidates' daily lesson plan writing skills. The participants were 97 teacher candidates in a general education programme. They were required to write a lesson plan before and after the three-hour UDL training. The single group pre-test--post-test design was conducted to see whether there was a change on the dependent variable. The results of this study indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the total scores of the participants on two lesson plans from the pre-test to post-test. The UDL training was found to be successful at increasing lesson plan writing skills and creating more responsive learning environments for general education teacher candidates.

The present study investigated the effects of online Community-based Instruction (CBI) training for pre-service special education teachers in Turkey. The training consisted of three knowledge modules and skill application assignments designed to be completed in 4 weeks. Results demonstrated statistically significant difference between control and treatment groups on CBI knowledge. Further, there were significant correlations between application assignment scores and post-assessment scores, as well as on time spent online and post-assessment scores. Maintenance data collected 3 months after the training showed that pre-service teacher participants' maintained their knowledge related to CBI over time. Limitations and future directions are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to explore the primary school teachers' experiences about teaching gifted students and students with disabilities in the resource room. Thirteen teachers who work with students with disabilities and 11 teachers who work with gifted students participated in this qualitative study. The data were collected using structured interviews and semi-structured focus group interviews and analysed using content analysis. The findings indicated that the advantages and disadvantages of the resource room programmes differed for both groups of students. The teachers of both groups also expressed different advantages and disadvantages of working in the resource rooms for themselves. Some of the problems of the resource room programme were insufficient materials, inadequate facility, and unqualified personnel.

Background: Identifying the students with intellectual disabilities and deciding the required services would not be sufficient without parental involvement. The purpose of this study was to understand the perspectives of the parents of students with intellectual disabilities about the Guidance and Research Centres (GRCs) and reveal the parents' experiences at the GRCs. Method: In this qualitative study, unstructured interviews were conducted. Twenty-one parents who had a child with an intellectual disability were asked about their experiences during their visit to the GRCs. Content analysis with an inductive approach was used to analyse the data. Findings: Most of the parents reported problems regarding educational evaluation, and communication and collaboration. The participants provided their suggestions about evaluation procedures, professionalism, and institutional practices. Conclusions: The problems at the GRCs must be considered by educators and other stakeholders to better provide educational evaluation, support services, and guidance to the students and their parents.

Students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) require effective academic interventions tailored to their distinctive learning characteristics. This is especially important in mathematics since approximately a quarter of learners with ASD have a mathematics learning disability. This meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of mathematics interventions for students with ASD by synthesizing and analyzing 33 studies that met inclusion criteria. The findings indicate moderate to large Tau-U single-case effect sizes (ES = .91) for the interventions. Five distinct intervention approaches were identified: multiple representations, video modeling, schema-based instruction, drill and practice, and multiple intervention components. Furthermore, these interventions were effective across various learner characteristics, mathematical performances, settings, and implementers. Increased rates of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are documented throughout the world. In Turkey, there are currently 100,000 students under the age of 14 with ASD and increasing each year by approximately 5,000 students. As a result of the current population and increased prevalence, special education and general education teachers are providing educational services to increasing numbers of students with ASD. The purpose of this study is to examine teachers' perceptions of students with ASD. The Autism Attitude Scale for Teachers was administered to 117 general education (n = 53) and special education (n = 63) teachers in 19 Education Centers for Children with Autism in Turkey. Results indicate both groups are receptive to students with autism, but special education teachers have more positive perceptions of students with ASD. Implications for teacher certification programs and continued professional development initiatives are presented.

Methods: Twenty-two teachers of students with DD completed the in-service training. TSTA model was used to structure the training. To assess differences between teachers' knowledge from pre-test to the post-test, paired sample t-tests were employed. Results: A significant increase in knowledge of general transition and goal functionality was observed from pre-test to post-test. Results indicated that the training was effective in both increasing teachers' knowledge and generalization of functional goal writing across content areas. Conclusions: The study revealed the dearth of research related to transition knowledge and generation of high quality transition goals for students with DD.

Social stories frequently have been used to improve the social interaction of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This literature review examines the effectiveness of social story interventions on the social interactions of students with ASD including with whom, where, and what formats have been implemented, as well as the methodological rigor of the research. Findings indicate preliminary evidence to suggest that social stories are a promising intervention to increase social interactions. Future research with methodological rigor is needed to reveal the most effective strategy for developing and implementing social story interventions.

Research emphasizes the necessity of improving teachers' skills in writing individualized education program (IEP) goals. Thus, we aimed to develop an interactive feedback procedure and examine its effects on teacher candidates' performance in writing IEP goals. We also examined whether there was a difference between treatment and control groups regarding their goal-writing skills. The 119 teacher candidates were divided into treatment (n= 58) and control groups (n = 61). The quality of IEP goals was rated using the first section of the IEP/IFSP Goals and Objectives Rating Instrument (GORI; Notari & Bricker, 1990). In this quasiexperimental study, we implemented an interactive feedback procedure for the treatment group while the control group was given only verbal feedback. ANCOVA revealed that the interactive feedback procedure was statistically significantly more effective than verbal feedback in improving the quality of IEP goals. The results suggest a useful framework that teacher-training programs can use to deliver effective instruction for teachers working with students with special needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
