Abstract

Study on the possibilities of agricultural valorisation of sugarcane scums and bagasse of SOSUHO (Gabon). As a first step towards the general use of organic fertilizers in improving poor agricultural yields of soils in the province of Haut-Ogooue, in Gabon, we studied germination and growth of seven different types of plants (maize, Zea mays L. var. 60 ; rice Oryza sativa Var. 1345 ; cacao-tree, Theobroma cacao Var. Forastero ; gombo, Hibiscus esculantus Clenson Spineless var ; culin, Cucurbita pepo Basma var ; aubergine, Solanum melongena, Asgrow var ; soya-bean, Glycine max tropical var.) on two six months old sugar cane residues. These residues, froth and bagasse were used by hemselves or mixed with earth or sand. By comparison with commercial compost, we found that froth and bagasse do not inhibit the germination of the seeds studied. However, we found that the growth of all species studied was better in froth than in bagasse. The results of chemical analysis carried out on these residues can explain partially the good growth observed in froth themselves or mixed with earth.

8. Decontamination of synthetic solutions containing lead ions using modified barks.

Abstract

Lead II chloride solutions containing 10, 100 and 1 000 ppm Pb were decontaminated with chemically treated bark. The percentage of Pb cations removed from solution was found to depend on pH and initial concentration: about 99% of the initial Pb content can be removed at pH of about 3.5, 5.5 and 6.5 for initial concentrations of 10, 100 and 1 000 ppm respectively. The maximum retention capacity of the treated bark was about 83 mg Pb/g modified bark. Infra-red spectroscopy of loaded bark suggested that the Pb reacts with hydroxyl groups of the phenolic constituents of the bark. Abstract

The efficiency of modified bark in removing Cd cations from effluents after conventional neutralisation and precipitation was tested. About 99.9% of Cd was removed from synthetic solutions containing 10 ppm, 99% from solutions with 100 ppm and 96% from solutions with 1 000 ppm. Pilot plant trials using an industrial effluent containing about 0.5 ppm led to almost complete elimination., The efficiency of modified bark in removing Cd cations from effluents after conventional neutralisation and precipitation was tested. Abstract

Chemically treated bark of pedunculate oak, Scots pine, European beech and European spruce was used to decontaminate copper acetate, chloride, nitrate and sulphate containing 10, 100 and 1 000 ppm Cu. The percentage of metal removed varied from 40% to 99%, depending on pH and initial concentration, and to some extent on the salt used. The maximum retention capacity of the treated bark varied from 31 to 43 mg Cu/g dry bark. Loaded bark was analysed by SEM and IR spectroscopy: Cu was uniformly distributed with no observed segregation, and appeared to be bound to the acidic sites of the bark. Abstract

A soil percolated with a saccharose solution was studied with usual microbiological techniques and with electron microscopy. The addition of sugar caused a very large increase in the numbers of microorganisms, but the Gram negativel total population rate was not modified. Other effects included the disappearance of bacterial colonies and the appearance of isolated bacteria, the increase in size of microorganisms and the appearance of peculiar microorganisms.

Abstract

The changes in the soil microflora as a result of introducing various organic substances (gelatin, chitin, cellulose and beech sawdust) into the soil were studied. The work was supplemented by electron-microscopic observations. Substantial shifts in the quantitative composition of the microorganisms take place only in the case of compounds easily accessible to them. Certain substances induce changes in the ratio of the groups comprising the soil micropopulation.

Abstract

Scanning electron microscopy was used to evidence the aggregated structure of a forest soil as well as the presence of fungal hyphae external to soil aggregates. The supernatant of soil suspension in water mainly contained isolated bacteria, while ultrathin sections of aggregates frequently revealed groups of bacteria surrounded by a sheath of mucilage with adhering clay minerals on the outside. These results confirm the existence of two particular biotopes in the soil studied: one is located inside aggregates, and the other, in the inter-aggregate spaces.

Abstract

Variations between seasonal samplings of a forest soil were studied during a one year cycle. The total number of microorganisms was maximal in march, while qualitative variations of the bacterial and fungal flora were unimportant. Electron microscope studies showed physiological differences and enabled to evaluate the seasonal variations of the type of associations of soil microbes.
