We measure the degree of linear polarization of comet 46P/Wirtanen during two months, embracing the perihelion passage in 2018 December with phase angles ranging from {\alpha}=18.1 to 46.4 deg. The polarimetric response PQ obtained resembles what was previously found in comet C/1975 V1 (West). This suggests 46P/Wirtanen belongs to a group of comets with high maximum positive polarization. We conducted BVRI photometry of 46P and found either neutral or blue colour of its dust which is in good accordance with measurements of C/1975 V1 (West). While aperture-average polarimetry of 46P/Wirtanen reveals a nearly zero polarization PQ at the lowest phase angle {\alpha} = 18.1 deg, simultaneous imaging polarimetry suggests that the negative polarization (PQ<0) arises in a region of within 5000 km of the nucleus, where the negative polarization could be as strong as PQ=-(1.44 +/- 0.15) percent. This observation suggests the existence of the circumnucleus halo and that the coma is populated by at least two types of dust particles. One of those reveals a low positive polarization at side scattering and high negative polarization near backscattering. Both polarimetric features are simultaneously produced by weakly absorbing Mg-rich silicate particles. Another type of dust produces solely positive polarization that could be attributed to carbonaceous particles. This composition of 46P/Wirtanen coma appears to be similar with what was previously found in comet C/1975 V1 (West)., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Using a statistical correlation analysis, we compute evolution of the magnetic Kubo number during an edge pedestal collapse in nonlinear reduced magnetohydrodynamic simulations. The Kubo number is found not to exceed the unity in spite of performing the simulation with a highly unstable initial pressure profile to the ideal ballooning mode. During the edge pedestal collapse, the Kubo number is within the values of $0.2$ and $0.6$ suggesting that the quasilinear diffusion model is sufficient to explain the energy loss mechanism during the pedestal collapse. Temporal evolution of poloidal correlation lengths of pressure fluctuations resembles with that of the Chirikov parameter and the Kubo number; while radial correlation lengths of the pressure fluctuations are strongly correlated with the radial width of the magnetic stochastic layer., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, Submitted to Physics of Plasmas

The over threshold carbon-loadings (~50 at.%) of initial TiO2-hosts and posterior Cu-sensitization (~7 at.%) was made using pulsed ion-implantation technique in sequential mode with 1 hour vacuum-idle cycle between sequential stages of embedding. The final Cx-TiO2:Cu samples were qualified using XPS wide-scan elemental analysis, core-levels and valence band mappings. The results obtained were discussed on the theoretic background employing DFT-calculations. The combined XPS and DFT analysis allows to establish and prove the final formula of the synthesized samples as Cx-TiO2:[Cu+][Cu2+] for the bulk and Cx-TiO2:[Cu+][Cu0] for thin-films. It was demonstrated the in the mode of heavy carbon-loadings the remaining majority of neutral C-C bonds (sp3-type) is dominating and only a lack of embedded carbon is fabricating the O-C=O clusters. No valence base-band width altering was established after sequential carbon-copper modification of the atomic structure of initial TiO2-hosts except the dominating majority of Cu 3s states after Cu-sensitization. The results of combined experimental and theoretical study of substitutional and clustering effects in Bi-doped TiO2 hosts (bulk and thin-film morphologies) are presented. Bi-doping of the bulk and thin-film titanium dioxide was made with help of pulsed ion-implantation (E(Bi+) = 30 keV, D = 1 * 1017 cm-2) without posterior tempering. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) qualification (core-levels and valence bands) and Density-Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were employed in order to study the electronic structure of Bi-ion implanted TiO2 samples. According to XPS data obtained and DFT calculations, the Bi -> Ti cation substitution occurs in Bi-implanted bulk TiO2, whereas in the thin-film morphology of TiO2:Bi the Bi-atoms have metal-like clusters segregation tendency. Based on the combined XPS and DFT considerations the possible reasons and mechanism for the observed effects are discussed. It is believed that established peculiarities of bismuth embedding into employed TiO2 hosts are mostly the sequence of pleomorphic origin for the formed "bismuth-oxygen" chemical bonding., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, accepted in Appl. Systematic investigation of atomic structure of N-ion implanted TiO2 (thin films and bulk ceramics) was performed by XPS measurements (core levels and valence bands) and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In bulk samples experiment and theory demonstrate anion N->O substitution. For the thin films case experiments evidence valuable contributions from N2 and NO molecule-like structures and theoretical modeling reveals a possibility of formation of these species as result of the appearance of interstitial nitrogen defects on the various surfaces of TiO2. We present paper six of the NIRSPEC Brown Dwarf Spectroscopic Survey, an analysis of multi-epoch, high-resolution (R~20,000) spectra of 25 field dwarf systems (3 late-type M dwarfs, 16 L dwarfs, and 6 T dwarfs) taken with the NIRSPEC infrared spectrograph at the W. M. Keck Observatory. With a radial velocity precision of ~2 km/s, we are sensitive to brown dwarf companions in orbits with periods of a few years or less given a mass ratio of 0.5 or greater. We do not detect any spectroscopic binary brown dwarfs in the sample. Given our target properties, and the frequency and cadence of observations, we use a Monte Carlo simulation to determine the detection probability of our sample. Even with a null detection result, our 1 sigma upper limit for very low mass binary frequency is 18%. Our targets included 7 known, wide brown dwarf binary systems. No significant radial velocity variability was measured in our multi-epoch observations of these systems, even for those pairs for which our data spanned a significant fraction of the orbital period. Specialized techniques are required to reach the high precisions sensitive to motion in orbits of very low-mass systems. For eight objects, including six T dwarfs, we present the first published high-resolution spectra, many with high signal to noise, that will provide valuable comparison data for models of brown dwarf atmospheres., Comment: Accepted by ApJ; 30 pages, 7 figures

Bulk and thin films ZnO and TiO2 samples were doped with Sn by pulsed ion implantation and studied by means of X-ray photoelectron core-level and valence band spectroscopy as well as density functional theory calculations for comprehensive study of the incorporation of Sn. XPS spectral analysis showed that isovalent Sn cation substitution occurs in both zinc oxide (Sn2+ -> Zn2+) and titanium dioxide (Sn4+ -> Ti4+) for bulk and film morphologies. For TiO2 films, the implantation also led to occupation of interstitials by doped ions, which induced the clustering of substituted and embedded Sn atoms; this did not occur in ZnO:Sn film samples. Density functional theory (DFT) formation energies were calculated of various incorporation processes, explaining the prevalence of substitutional defects in both matrices. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) measurements of pellet and thin film forms of TiO$_2$ with implanted Fe ions are presented and discussed. The findings indicate that Fe-implantation in a TiO$_2$ pellet sample induces heterovalent cation substitution (Fe$^{2+}\rightarrow$ Ti$^{4+}$) beneath the surface region. But in thin film samples, the clustering of Fe atoms is primarily detected. In addition to this, significant amounts of secondary phases of Fe$^{3+}$ are detected on the surface of all doped samples due to oxygen exposure. These experimental findings are compared with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of formation energies for different configurations of structural defects in the implanted TiO$_2$:Fe system. According to our calculations, the clustering of Fe-atoms in TiO$_2$:Fe thin films can be attributed to the formation of combined substitutional and interstitial defects. The lattice dynamics of solid 4He has been explored using pulsed NMR methods to study the motion of 3He impurities in the temperature range where experiments have revealed anomalies attributed to superflow or unexpected viscoelastic properties of the solid 4He lattice. We report the results of measurements of the nuclear spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times that measure the fluctuation spectrum at high and low frequencies, respectively, of the 3He motion that results from quantum tunneling in the 4He matrix. We report measurements of the nuclear spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times of very dilute 3He in solid 4He in the temperature range 0.01 \leq T \leq 0.5 K for densities where anomalies have been observed in torsional oscillator and shear modulus measurements. We compare the results with the values of the relaxation times reported by other observers for higher concentrations and the theory of Landesman that takes into account the elastic properties of the 4He lattice. A sharp increase in the magnitude of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation times compared to the the classical Landesman theory is observed close to the temperatures where the torsional and shear modulus anomalies are observed. The NMR results suggest that the tunneling of 3He impurities in the atomic-scale elastic distortion is affected by the same processes that give rise to the macroscopic elastic dissipation anomalies., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The dynamics of 3He atoms in solid 4He have been investigated by measuring the NMR relaxation times T1, T2 in the region where a significant non-classical rotational inertia fraction (NCRIF) has been reported. For 3He concentrations x3 = 16 ppm and 24 ppm, changes are observed for both the spin-lattice relaxation time T1 and the spin-spin relaxation time T2 at the temperatures corresponding to the onset of NCRIF and, at lower temperatures, to the 3He-4He phase separation. The magnitudes of T1 and T2 at temperatures above the phase separation agree roughly with existing theory based on the tunneling of 3He impurities in the elastic strain field due to isotopic mismatch. However, a distinct peak in T1 and a less well-resolved feature in T2 are observed near the reported NCRIF onset temperature, in contrast to the temperature-independent relaxation times predicted by the tunneling theory.

Refinements of some recent reverse inequalities for the celebrated Cauchy-Bunyakovsky-Schwarz inequality in 2-inner product spaces are given. Using this framework, applications for determinantal integral inequalities are also provided.
