Contains fulltext : 170517.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), OBJECTIVES: Staging in case of a borderline tumor of the ovary (BOT) is a controversial issue. Upstaging is not uncommon, but this occurs especially with presumed stage I serous borderline tumors. There are only a few documented cases of BOTs of non-serous histology that were not confined to the ovary. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of non-invasive and invasive implants in the omentum and other (extra)pelvic peritoneal surfaces in patients with a mucinous BOT (mBOT). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed in three hospitals in the Netherlands. All patients with a histopathological diagnosis of mBOT diagnosed from January 1st 1990 to December 1st 2015 were identified and included when the inclusion criteria were met. RESULTS: In total, 74 patients were included. Of these 74 patients, 46 (62.2%) underwent a staging procedure. In 12 (26.1%) patients, only omental tissue was obtained, in 32 (69.6%) patients, omental tissue and peritoneal biopsies were obtained and in two (4.3%) patients, only peritoneal biopsies were obtained. No implants were seen upon microscopic examination in any of the patients. Two patients (3%) developed a recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Because no extra-ovarian disease was found, staging procedures in the case of an mBOT may be omitted. However, the actual perioperative decision for staging or not should be taken in the context of a frozen section diagnosis, which is not always accurate and straightforward. Recurrence with malignant disease is rare after mBOT. The value of post-treatment surveillance seems limited after bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.

The European Parliament represents the citizens of the member states of the European Union (EU). The accounts of its meetings and related documents are open data, promoting transparency and accountability, and are used as source data by researchers. However, the official portal of these documents provides limited search facilities. This paper presents LinkedEP, a Linked Open Data translation of the verbatim reports of the plenary meetings of the European Parliament. These data are integrated with a database of political affiliations of the Members of Parliament, and enriched with detected topics from the EU's topic hierarchy and links to four other Linked Open Datasets. The results of this work are available through a SPARQL endpoint and a user interface with extensive browse and search facilities. It is now possible to combine in one query the time and topic of the debate, the spoken words - in any available translation - and information about the speaker uttering these, such as affiliations to countries, parties and committees. This paper discusses the design and creation of the vocabulary, data and links, as well as known use of the data.

Images naturally appear alongside text in a wide variety of media, such as books, magazines, newspapers, and in online articles. This type of multi-modal data offers an interesting basis for vision and language research but most existing datasets use crowdsourced text, which removes the images from their original context. In this paper, we introduce the KBK-1M dataset of 1.6 million images in their original context, with co-occurring texts found in Dutch newspapers from 1922-1994. The images are digitally scanned photographs, cartoons, sketches, and weather forecasts; the text is generated from OCR scanned blocks. The dataset is suitable for experiments in automatic image captioning, image-article matching, object recognition, and data-to-text generation for weather forecasting. It can also be used by humanities scholars to analyse photographic style changes, the representation of people and societal issues, and new tools for exploring photograph reuse via image-similarity-based search.

Na de opkomst van de fotografie aan het begin van de negentiende eeuw, duurde het nog bijna een eeuw voordat het genre van de persfotografie in het Nederlandse journalistieke productieproces geëffectueerd en geaccepteerd was als vorm van nieuwsoverdracht of nieuwsillustratie. Tenminste vier factoren speelden een rol in dit proces van innovatie en acceptatie: technologische vernieuwingen; ontwikkelingen in de perssector en journalistieke cultuur (dag- en weekbladen); toegankelijkheid tot en populariteit van de fotografie; en professionalisering van het beroep van persfotograaf of fotojournalist. Deze factoren geven aanleiding tot een voorzichtige indeling in drie periodes die een geschiedenis beschrijven van de Nederlandse persfotografie: van de eerste Nederlandse persfoto’s in de Katholieke Illustratie tot aan het multimediale crowfunded Sochi Project. De in het artikel beschreven ontwikkelingen worden grotendeels ondersteund door de resultaten van een kwantitatief onderzoek naar het aantal en de omvang van persfoto’s in twee Nederlandse dagbladen (De Telegraaf en Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant/NRC Handelsblad) in de periode 1900-2013.

Current self-report medication adherence measures often provide heavily skewed results with limited variance, suggesting that most participants are highly adherent. This contrasts with findings from objective adherence measures. We argue that one of the main limitations of these self-report measures is the limited range covered by the behaviors assessed. That is, the items do not match the adherence behaviors that people perform, resulting in a ceiling effect. In this paper, we present a new self-reported medication adherence scale based on the Rasch model approach (the ProMAS), which covers a wide range of adherence behaviors. The ProMAS was tested with 370 elderly receiving medication for chronic conditions. The results indicated that the ProMAS provided adherence scores with sufficient fit to the Rasch model. Furthermore, the ProMAS covered a wider range of adherence behaviors compared to the widely used Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS) instrument, resulting in more variance and less skewness in adherence scores. We conclude that the ProMAS is more capable of discriminating between people with different adherence rates than the MARS.

Objective: In ovarian cancer, detection of sentinel nodes is an upcoming procedure. Perioperative determination of the patient’s sentinel node(s) might prevent a radical lymphadenectomy and associated morbidity. It is essential to understand the lymphatic drainage pathways of the ovaries, which are surprisingly up till now poorly investigated, to predict the anatomical regions where sentinel nodes can be found. We aimed to describe the lymphatic drainage pathways of the human ovaries including their compartmental fascia borders. Methods: A series of 3 human female fetuses and tissues samples from 1 human cadaveric specimen were studied. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on paraffin-embedded transverse sections (8 or 10 µm) using antibodies against Lyve-1, S100, and [alpha]-smooth muscle actin to identify the lymphatic endothelium, Schwann, and smooth muscle cells, respectively. Three-dimensional reconstructions were created. Results: Two major and 1 minor lymphatic drainage pathways from the ovaries were detected. One pathway drained via the proper ligament of the ovaries (ovarian ligament) toward the lymph nodes in the obturator fossa and the internal iliac artery. Another pathway drained the ovaries via the suspensory ligament (infundibulopelvic ligament) toward the para-aortic and paracaval lymph nodes. A third minor pathway drained the ovaries via the round ligament to the inguinal lymph nodes. Lymph vessels draining the fallopian tube all followed the lymphatic drainage pathways of the ovaries. Conclusions: The lymphatic drainage pathways of the ovaries invariably run via the suspensory ligament (infundibulopelvic ligament) and the proper ligament of the ovaries (ovarian ligament), as well as through the round ligament of the uterus. Because ovarian cancer might spread lymphogenously via these routes, the sentinel node can be detected in the para-aortic and paracaval regions, obturator fossa and surrounding internal iliac arteries, and inguinal regions, Intelligent Systems, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

Students and researchers of media and communication sciences study the role of media in our society. They frequently search through media archives to manually select items that cover a certain event. When this is done for large time spans and across media-outlets, this task can however be challenging and laborious. Therefore, up until now the focus of researchers has been on manual and qualitative analyses of newspaper coverage. PoliMedia aims to stimulate and facilitate large-scale, cross-media analysis of the coverage of political events. We focus on the meetings of the Dutch parliament, and provide automatically generated links between the transcripts of those meetings, newspaper articles, including their original lay-out on the page, and radio bulletins. Via the portal at [www.polimedia.nl](http://www.polimedia.nl/) researchers can search through the debates and find related media coverage in two media- outlets, facilitating a more efficient search process and qualitative analyses of the media coverage. Furthermore, the generated links are available via a SPARQL endpoint at [data.polimedia.nl](http://data.polimedia.nl/) allowing quantitative analyses with complex, structured queries that are not covered by the search functionality of the portal, thus challenging the student to go across the academic borders and enter fields that previously have been neglected.

The transition from analogue to digital archives and the recent explosion of online content offers researchers novel ways of engaging with data. The crucial question for ensuring a balance between the supply and demand-side of data is whether this trend connects to existing scholarly practices and to the average search skills of researchers. To gain insight into this process we conducted a survey among nearly three hundred (N= 288) humanities scholars in the Netherlands and Belgium with the aim of finding answers to the following questions: 1) To what extent are digital databases and archives used? 2) What are the preferences in search functionalities 3) Are there differences in search strategies between novices and experts of information retrieval? Our results show that while scholars actively engage in research online they mainly search for text and images. General search systems such as Google and JSTOR are predominant, while large-scale collections such as Europeana are rarely consulted. Searching with keywords is the dominant search strategy and advanced search options are rarely used. When comparing novice and more experienced searchers, the first tend to have a more narrow selection of search engines, and mostly use keywords. Our overall findings indicate that Google is the key player among available search engines. This dominant use illustrates the paradoxical attitude of scholars toward Google: while provenance and context are deemed key academic requirements, the workings of the Google algorithm remain unclear. We conclude that Google introduces a black box into digital scholarly practices, indicating scholars will become increasingly dependent on such black boxed algorithms. AXES, Access for Audiovisual Archives, is a research project developing tools for new engaging ways to interact with audiovisual libraries, integrating advanced audio and video analysis technologies. The presented prototype is targeted at academic researchers and journalists. The tool allows them to search and retrieve video segments through metadata, audio analysis, as well as visual concepts and similarity searches. Presented here is a user-based vision on the research-oriented tool provided by AXES.

Analysing media coverage across several types of media-outlets is a challenging task for academic researchers. The PoliMedia project aimed to showcase the potential of cross-media analysis by linking the digitised transcriptions of the debates at the Dutch Parliament (Dutch Hansard) with three media-outlets: 1) newspapers in their original layout of the historical newspaper archive at the National Library, 2) radio bulletins of the Dutch National Press Agency (ANP) and 3) newscasts and current affairs programs from the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. In this paper we describe generally how these links were created and we introduce the PoliMedia search user interface developed for scholars to navigate the links. In evaluation it was found that the linking algorithm had a recall of 67% and precision of 75%. Moreover, in an eye tracking evaluation we found that the interface enabled scholars to perform known-item and exploratory searches for qualitative analysis.

__Abstract__ Photography contests have assumed an increasingly significant public role in the context of the global surge of mass-mediated war reporting. This study focuses on the recurrence of visual tropes in press photographs awarded in the annual contest World Press Photo (WPP) in the years 2009–11. By tropes, we mean conventions (e.g. a mourning woman, a civilian facing soldiers, a distressed witness to an atrocity) that remain unchanged despite their travels across the visual sphere, gaining professional and public recognition and having a strong affective impact. We contend that photography contests such as the WPP influence and organize a process of generic understanding of war, disaster and atrocity that is based on a number of persistent tropes, such as the mourner, the protester or the survivor amidst chaos and ruins. We further show that these tropes are gendered along traditional conceptions of femininity and masculinity, appealing strongly to both judges and wider audiences. The evidence for our claim comes from an analysis of the photographs that won awards, observation of the judging sessions, semi-structured interviews with three jury chairmen, and public commentary on the juries’ choices (blogs, newspapers and websites).

With an ever-growing supply of online sources, information to produce news stories seems to be one mouse click away. But in what way do Dutch journalists actually use computer-aided research tools? This article provides an inventory of the ways journalists use digital (re)sources and explores the differences between experts and novices. We applied a combined methodological approach by conducting an ethnographic study as well as a survey. Results show that Dutch journalists use relatively few digital tools to find online information. However, journalists who can be considered experts in the field of information retrieval use a wider range of search engines and techniques, arrive quicker at the angle to their story, and are better at finding information related to this angle. This allows them to spend more time on writing their news story. Novices are more dependent on the information provided by others.

Het Vietnamese meisje vluchtend voor de napalmbommen of de Chinese man die een tank stopt op het Plein voor de Hemelse Vrede - bijna iedereen kent deze beelden. Omdat deze foto's voor meer staan dan wat letterlijk is afgebeeld, zijn het icoonfoto's die keer op keer gepubliceerd worden. Canonieke icoonfoto's beschrijft het onderzoek naar welke Nederlandse foto's functioneren als icoonfoto in schoolboeken voor het vak geschiedenis en hoe het komt dat foto's die status krijgen. Samenstellers van geschiedenismethoden voeren praktische redenen aan waarom ze dezelfde foto's kiezen, zoals herkenbaarheid, wat de verkoopcijfers ten goede zou komen. Bovendien hebben redacteuren weinig tijd om naar beeldmateriaal te zoeken. Daarom raadplegen ze in eerste instantie hun geheugen, met als gevolg dat vaak dezelfde foto's terugkomen in lesmethoden. Twee icoonfoto's worden uitgebreid geanalyseerd: die van Pieter Jelles Troelstra, terwijl hij een menigte toespreekt, en de beroemde 'baas-in-eigen-buik' foto van Dolle Mina. Deze foto's functioneren steeds meer als symbool, terwijl de datering vaak niet klopt. Regelmatig blijken de foto's een andere gebeurtenis te verbeelden dan de tekst suggereert. Dit boek pleit er daarom voor meer aandacht te besteden aan de rol van beeldmateriaal in de Nederlandse geschiedschrijving.

Creating a photo database for research purposes offers many opportunities: find specific photos within a large set of images, link photos to other relevant pictures within the database or find similar photos. This article discusses the possibilities and difficulties when creating a research photo database, focusing on the process of describing photos. Which words can and should be used to describe a photo? Which thesaurus is suitable to describe visual resources and do different people describe the same photo in the same manner? These questions are addressed in the context of the development of a photo database for a research project on Dutch iconic photographs. By showing the difference in the assigned keywords of a photo of a Dutch politician in three archives, the article shows there will always be a difference in the connotation process of images when applying words to describe visual sources. Therefore, the author pleads to investigate the possibilities of image recognition software for describing photos.

De eerste Nederlandse persfoto wordt standaard toegeschreven aan een foto in de Katholieke Illustratie van de gevolgen van een brand in Raamsdonk in 1885. Het is, geredeneerd naar de maatstaven van wat we tegenwoordig als nieuws definiëren, een klassieke nieuwsgebeurtenis. Het is echter nog maar de vraag of dit inderdaad de eerste nieuwsfoto is. Wie oude nummers van de Katholieke Illustratie doorbladert, vindt meer foto’s die in aanmerking komen als eerste persfoto. Minstens twee eerder gepubliceerde foto’s kunnen evengoed beschouwd worden als persfoto. Het gaat hierbij vooral om definities. Wat is nieuws? Wat is een persfoto? Of, nog fundamenteler, wat is een foto?

‘[…] meer en meer krijgt optische propaganda haar plaats in het wekken van belangstelling bij groote groepen van het lezende publiek. Als inlichtende en opvoedende factor wordt het beeld ook door de groote technische vervolmaking steeds belangrijker in propagandistisch oogpunt.’ Met de bovenstaande opmerking legde de Nederlandse regering in ballingschap in Londen verantwoording af voor de kosten van een fotografische dienst. Het bekendste middel om de Nederlandse bevolking te steunen vanuit Londen was Radio Oranje. Echter, de Nederlandse regering was zich ook al bewust van de mogelijkheden van fotografie als propagandamiddel. Vanuit Londen werd al snel nagedacht hoe voorlichting kon worden ingezet als Nederland zou zijn bevrijd. Hierbij werd ook fotografie gebruikt. Met dit doel werd de afdeling Anefo opgericht: het Algemeen Nederlandsch Fotobureau. Anefo is bij velen bekend als fotopersbureau dat in de jaren zeventig en tachtig in Nederland opereerde. Het bouwde een geweldig archief op dat een bijzonder tijdsbeeld van ons land geeft. Minder bekend is dat Anefo werd opgericht als propaganda-instrument van de Nederlandse regering. Het ressorteerde in die hoedanigheid onder het Militair Gezag. Na de oorlog volgden enkele mislukte overnamepogingen. In het kader hiervan werden gesprekken gevoerd met onder meer ANP en Uitgeverij Spaarnestad. Per 17 januari 1948 werd Anefo een zelfstandig commercieel bedrijf. In dit artikel worden de oprichting en beginjaren van Anefo besproken en aangetoond hoe fotografie als propagandamiddel werd ingezet.

Steeds vaker zoekt een onderzoeker gericht naar één foto. Om dit beeld te vinden moet gezocht worden met de juiste trefwoorden, die alleen doeltreffend zijn wanneer de onderzoeker de structuur en achtergrond van het archief kent. Fotoarchieven zouden daarom actiever moeten nadenken hoe de collectie op andere manieren doorzocht zou kunnen worden, bijvoorbeeld m.b.v. beeldherkenningstechnieken.

We have recently reported inactivation of the tyrosine phosphatase PTPN2 (also known as TC-PTP) through deletion of the entire gene locus in ∼ 6% of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) cases. T-ALL is an aggressive disease of the thymocytes characterized by the stepwise accumulation of chromosomal abnormalities and gene mutations. In the present study, we confirmed the strong association of the PTPN2 deletion with TLX1 and NUP214-ABL1 expression. In addition, we found cooperation between PTPN2 deletion and activating JAK1 gene mutations. Activating mutations in JAK1 kinase occur in ∼ 10% of human T-ALL cases, and aberrant kinase activity has been shown to confer proliferation and survival advantages. Our results reveal that some JAK1 mutation - positive TALLs harbor deletions of the tyrosine phosphatase PTPN2, a known negative regulator of the JAK/STAT pathway. We provide evidence that down-regulation of Ptpn2 sensitizes lymphoid cells to JAK1-mediated transformation and reduces their sensitivity to JAK inhibition.
