We investigate the motives of pro-social behavior in collective decisions in an economic experiment. It compares individual behavior in private and collective decisions in a unified experimental setup. Subjects are given an individual endowment and have to decide how much of it to donate to charity. The experiment is combined with two long questionnaires that provide us with background information on subjects and enables us to learn more about the motives driving their behavior. Contrary to theoretical predictions, the distribution of amounts donated individually is remarkably similar to the distribution of amounts proposed for collective donation. In regressions, we find individual donations to be driven by consequentialist motives, social norms and moral convictions. In collective decisions, neither the motiverelated variables nor any of the control variables are found significant. Comparing subjects' affective state before and after the experiment, we find that individual donations create a feeling of warm glow while collective donations do not. On the other hand, the change in affective state in the collective decision is higher the higher the amount proposed for the collective donation. This pattern is consistent with expressive motives.

The influence of the creative class on regional economic well-being is discussed by using the concepts of Richard Florida. We apply this theory on the level of all German major cities in a 10 year period from 1997 to 2006. The theoretical part gives an overview about similar applications. The empirical part firstly describes the development of the theatre, employment and population structures of these cities. Secondly, these data are used to investigate a possible connection between theatre variables and economic growth (approximated by the municipal net tax base). We apply a balanced panel estimation with cross-section fixed effects on the data. It is shown that there is a connection between the growth of the number of theatre actors (proxy for the dimension of the creative class) and the growth of the net tax base. The growth of the number of actors Granger causes the growth of the net tax base. This result supports Florida's theory that the dimension of the creative class influences the economic well-being of a region.

This paper examines the mechanisms by which a World Champion is chosen in the For-mula One Championship. Furthermore it is analysed whether there is a best method to do this. For this purpose we will discuss the methods used by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) since the founding of the World Championship in 1950. We show how the election of a method affects the Formula One contest. We then give insight whether there is a best method to select a World Champion or not. We therefore discuss Arrow's Impossible Theorem with respect to this sports contest. Moreover we simulated several seasons and compared different scoring vectors with respect to indicators that might be important for viewer's demand.

In this paper an analysis of the determinants of attractiveness of the Formula One is attempted. Therefore the concept of competitive balance will be explained and applied. The principal item of this analysis will be the result that there is an optimal level of competitive balance which maximizes the attractiveness. This concept will be applied through an empirical analysis of the determinants of the German Formula One number of TV viewers. It is shown that the influence of competitive balance is not totally clear. A too high level of competitive balance seems to be as detrimental as a too low level of competitive balance.

Das Projekt zum Thema - literarisch-essayistische Reisen zu Beginn der 70er Jahre bei Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, Rom, Blicke und Bernward Vesper, Die Reise stellt ein Experiment dar. Es geht um die wissenschaftliche Bestandsaufnahme des Phänomens 1968 und um das Motiv "Resignation". Die Annäherung erfolgt im Teil A auf wissenschaftlicher Basis, die sich im Teil B in eine literarische Herangehensweise wandelt.
