We model the split red clump of the Galactic bulge in OGLE-III photometry, and compare the results to predictions from two N-body models. Our analysis yields precise maps of the brightness of the two red clumps, the fraction of stars in the more distant peak, and their combined surface density. We compare the observations to predictions from two N-body models previously used in the literature. Both models correctly predict several features as long as one assumes an angle $\alpha_{\rm{Bar}} \approx 30^{\circ}$ between the Galactic bar's major axis and the line of sight to the Galactic centre. In particular that the fraction of stars in the faint red clump should decrease with increasing longitude. The biggest discrepancies between models and data are in the rate of decline of the combined surface density of red clump stars toward negative longitudes and of the brightness difference between the two red clumps toward positive longitudes, with neither discrepancy exceeding $\sim$25% in amplitude. Our analysis of the red giant luminosity function also yields an estimate of the red giant branch bump parameters toward these high-latitude fields, and evidence for a high rate ($\sim$25%) of disk contamination in the bulge at the colour and magnitude of the red clump, with the disk contamination rate increasing toward sightlines further distant from the plane., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the gravitational microlensing discovery of a 4 M_Uranus planet that orbits a 0.7 M_Sun star at ~18 AU. This is the first known analog of Uranus. Similar planets, i.e., cold ice-giants, are inaccessible to either radial velocity or transit methods because of the long orbital periods, while low reflected light prevents direct imaging. We discuss how similar planets may contaminate the sample of the very short microlensing events that are interpreted as free-floating planets with an estimated rate of 1.8 per main sequence star. Moreover, the host star has a nearby stellar (or brown dwarf) companion. We present and study the largest and the most comprehensive catalog of microlensing events ever constructed. The sample of standard microlensing events comprises 3718 unique events from years 2001--2009, with 1409 not detected before in real-time by the Early Warning System of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). The search pipeline makes use of Machine Learning algorithms in order to help find rare phenomena among 150 million objects and derive the detection efficiency. Applications of the catalog can be numerous, from analyzing individual events to large statistical studies for the Galactic mass and kinematics distributions and planetary abundances. We derive the maps of the mean Einstein ring crossing time of events spanning 31 sq. deg. toward of the Galactic Center and compare the observed distributions with the most recent models. We find good agreement within the observed region and we see the signature of the tilt of the bar in the microlensing data. However, the asymmetry of the mean time-scales seems to rise more steeply than predictions, indicating either a somewhat different orientation of the bar or a larger bar width. The map for the events with sources in the Galactic bulge shows a dependence of the mean time-scale on the Galactic latitude, signaling an increasing contribution from disk lenses closer to the plane, related with the height of the disk. We develop a new method to measure source proper motions in microlensing events, which can partially overcome problems due to blending. It takes advantage of the fact that the source position is known precisely from the microlensing event itself. We apply this method to the event MOA-2011-BLG-262, which has a short timescale t_E=3.8 day, a companion mass ratio q=0.0047 and a very high or high lens-source relative proper motion mu_rel=20 mas/yr or 12 mas/yr (for two possible models). These three characteristics imply that the lens could be a brown dwarf or a massive planet with a roughly Earth-mass "moon". The probability of such an interpretation would be greatly increased if it could be shown that the high lens-source relative proper motion was primarily due to the lens rather than the source. Based on the long-term monitoring data of the Galactic bulge from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE), we measure the source proper motion that is small, mu_s = (-2.3, -0.9) +- (2.8,2.6) mas/yr in a (North, East) Galactic coordinate frame. The core accretion theory of planetary formation does not predict that super-Jupiters will form beyond the snow line of a low mass stars. We present a discovery of 3.9 +- 1.2 M_Jup mass planet orbiting the 0.59 +- 0.17 M_Sun star using the gravitational microlensing method. During the event, the projected separation of the planet and the star is 3.9 +- 1.0 AU i.e., the planet is significantly further from the host star than the snow line. This is a fourth such planet discovered using the microlensing technique and challenges the core accretion theory.

We combine VI photometry from OGLE-III with VVV and 2MASS measurements of E(J-K_{s}) to resolve the longstanding problem of the non-standard optical extinction toward the Galactic bulge. We show that the extinction is well-fit by the relation A_{I} = 0.7465*E(V-I) + 1.3700*E(J-K_{s}), or, equivalently, A_{I} = 1.217*E(V-I)(1+1.126*(E(J-K_{s})/E(V-I)-0.3433)). The optical and near-IR reddening law toward the inner Galaxy approximately follows an R_{V} \approx 2.5 extinction curve with a dispersion {\sigma}_{R_{V}} \approx 0.2, consistent with extragalactic investigations of the hosts of type Ia SNe. Differential reddening is shown to be significant on scales as small as as our mean field size of 6', with the 1{\sigma} dispersion in reddening averaging 9% of total reddening for our fields. The intrinsic luminosity parameters of the Galactic bulge red clump (RC) are derived to be (M_{I,RC}, \sigma_{I,RC,0}, (V-I)_{RC,0}, \sigma_{(V-I)_{RC}}, (J-K_{s})_{RC,0}) = (-0.12, 0.09, 1.06, 0.121, 0.66). Our measurements of the RC brightness, brightness dispersion and number counts allow us to estimate several Galactic bulge structural parameters. We estimate a distance to the Galactic center of 8.20 kpc, resolving previous discrepancies in distance determinations to the bulge based on I-band observations. We measure an upper bound on the tilt {\alpha} \approx 40{\deg}. between the bar's major axis and the Sun-Galactic center line of sight, though our brightness peaks are consistent with predictions of an N-body model oriented at {\alpha} \approx 25{\deg}. About 2500 square degrees of sky south of declination -25 degrees and/or near the galactic plane were surveyed for bright outer solar system objects. This survey is one of the first large scale southern sky and galactic plane surveys to detect dwarf planets and other bright Kuiper Belt objects in the trans-Neptunian region. The survey was able to obtain a limiting R-band magnitude of 21.6. In all, 18 outer solar system objects were detected, including Pluto which was detected near the galactic center using optimal image subtraction techniques to remove the high stellar density background. Fourteen of the detections were previously unknown trans-Neptunian objects, demonstrating that the southern sky had not been well-searched to date for bright outer solar system objects. Assuming moderate albedos, several of the new discoveries from this survey could be in hydrostatic equilibrium and thus be considered dwarf planets. Combining this survey with previous surveys from the northern hemisphere suggests that the Kuiper Belt is nearly complete to around 21st magnitude in the R-band. All the main dynamical classes in the Kuiper Belt are occupied by at least one dwarf planet sized object. The 3:2 Neptune resonance, which is the innermost well-populated Neptune resonance, has several large objects while the main outer Neptune resonances such as the 5:3, 7:4, 2:1, and 5:2 do not appear have any large objects. This indicates that the outer resonances are either significantly depleted in objects relative to the 3:2 resonance or have a significantly different assortment of objects than the 3:2 resonance. For the largest objects (H<4.5 mag), the scattered disk population appears to have a few times more objects than the main Kuiper Belt population, while the Sedna population could be several times more than that of the main Kuiper Belt., Comment: Accepted Astronomical Journal (October 2011)
