Abstract

En el presente artículo, se revisan las circunstancias particulares, autores e ideas que influyeron en la generación de uno de los modelos de personalidad más sólidos con que cuenta la Psicología hasta nuestros días: el ModeloPsicobiológico de Eysenck. Se presentan las características principales del mismo, las cuales lo definen como un modelo disposicional, dimensional, jerárquico y psicobiológico. El intento de mejorar la descripción, explicación y medición de las dimensiones llevó a este autor a proponer modificaciones a su teoría original y a sus instrumentos. Se analizan de este modo las distintas etapas de su modelo. A pesar de la proliferación de teorías de personalidad, el modelo de Eysenck tienen una validez empírica que pocos poseen. Disponemos en Psicología de la Personalidad de un cuerpo de conocimientos que representa el Paradigma dentro del cual con mucha probabilidad nos moveremos en los próximos años.

Abstract

Abstract This paper describes the preparation and characterization of MgO and ZnO-based catalysts, pure and mixed in different proportions, supported on γ-Al2O3. Their catalytic performance was studied in the transesterification of soybean oil and castor oil with methanol and butanol, attempting to produce biodiesel. XRD (X-ray diffraction), SEM–EDS (scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), CO2-adsorption and N2-adsorption allowed characterizing the prepared catalysts. The characterization results were in all cases consistent with mesoporous solids with high specific surface area. All the catalysts exhibited good results, especially in the transesterification of castor oil using butanol. For this reaction, the reuse was tested, maintaining high FABE (fatty acid butyl esters) yields after four cycles. This good performance can be attributed to the basic properties of the Mg species, and simultaneously, to the amphoteric properties of ZnO, which allow both triglycerides and free fatty acids to be converted into esters. Using these catalysts, it is possible to obtain second-generation biodiesel, employing castor oil, a raw material that does not compete with the food industry. In addition, butanol can be produced from renewable biomass.

Abstract

8. Synthesis and Catalytic Application of Silver Nanoparticles Supported on Lactobacillus kefiri S-Layer Proteins

Abstract

Research on nanoparticles obtained on biological supports is a topic of growing interest in nanoscience, especially regarding catalytic applications. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been studied due to their low toxicity, but they tend to aggregation, oxidation, and low stability. In this work, we synthesized and characterized AgNPs supported on S-layer proteins (SLPs) as bidimensional regularly arranged biotemplates. By different reduction strategies, six AgNPs of variable sizes were obtained on two different SLPs. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed that SLPs are mostly decorated by evenly distributed AgNPs; however, a drastic reduction by NaBH4 led to large AgNPs whereas a smooth reduction with H2 or H2/NaBH4 at low concentration leads to smaller AgNPs, regardless of the SLP used as support. All the nanosystems showed conversion values between 75–80% of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol, however, the increment in the AgNPs size led to a great decrease in Kapp showing the influence of reduction strategy in the performance of the catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the adsorption of p-nitrophenolate species through the nitro group is the most favored mechanism, leading to p-aminophenol as the only feasible product of the reaction, which was corroborated experimentally.

11. Nanoarchitectonics Based on S-layer Proteins: Design of Noble Metal Nanoparticle Arrangements and Nanostructured Materials

Abstract

Nanoarchitectonics based on molecules of biological origin or bio-active components for the creation of hierarchical systems with tailored structures and properties is an area of growing interest. Thus, the S-layer proteins isolated from Bacteria and Archaea emerge as promising building blocks for the design of new structures given their unique characteristics. Due to the presence of well-defined reaction sites in S-layer protein self-assembled structures both in dispersion and on different surfaces, it is possible to use them for the preparation of metallic nanoparticles. This chapter presents the most relevant aspects of S-layer proteins with particular attention to their use through different strategies for the preparation of arrangements of metallic nanoparticles and nanostructured systems containing metallic nanoparticles for various applications.

Abstract

Pyrolysis as a waste treatment method has gained relevance because it can generate higher value-added products in addition to reducing the environment’s secondary pollution. In this study, the catalytic pyrolysis of waste tires was evaluated using NiTiO3 and CoTiO3 ilmenites as catalysts and precursors of metal catalysts with the aim to produce an oil enriched in high-value hydrocarbons, such as benzene, toluene, a xylenes mixture, and products less-reported, such as p-cymene and p-cymenene. The experiments were performed in an analytical pyrolyzer coupled to GC/MS. The effect of the nature of the catalysts on the product distribution was compared with the uncatalyzed reaction. The main products of uncatalyzed pyrolysis were D, L-limonene (~60%), and isoprene (~25%) due to the depolymerization of natural rubber. Meanwhile, Ni-ilmenites-based catalysts favored the formation of target compounds to expense D, L-limonene. Moreover, the presence of metal in reduced-ilmenite sharply enhanced the selectivity by ~50% concerning oxidized ilmenite and above 80% compared to the uncatalyzed reaction for p-cymene and p-cymenene. By contrast, the Co-ilmenites-based catalysts showed a marginal effect on secondary reactions. Abstract

A series of bimetallic Pd-Pb catalysts with a constant Pd content of 1 wt% and Pb/Pd atomic ratio from 0 to 1.6 supported on γ-Al2O3 were prepared and used for glycerol oxidation with H2O2 as the oxidizing agent at atmospheric pressure, 45℃ and pH=11. The morphology and dispersion of the catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The presence of an alloy phase in the bimetallic catalyst was detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Glycerol conversion obtained with the monometallic Pd catalyst was 19%, which was increased to 100% with the addition of Pb. Abstract

Chandra observations of the nearby, Lyman-continuum (LyC) emitting galaxy Tol 1247-232 resolve the X-ray emission and show that it is dominated by a point-like source with a hard spectrum ($\Gamma = 1.6 \pm 0.5$) and a high luminosity ($(9 \pm 2) \times 10^{40} \rm \, erg \, s^{-1}$). Comparison with an earlier XMM-Newton observation shows flux variation of a factor of 2. Hence the X-ray emission likely arises from an accreting X-ray source: a low-luminosity AGN or one or a few X-ray binaries. The Chandra X-ray source is similar to the point-like, hard spectrum ($\Gamma = 1.2 \pm 0.2$), high luminosity ($10^{41} \rm \, erg \, s^{-1}$) source seen in Haro 11, which is the only other confirmed LyC-emitting galaxy that has been resolved in X-rays. Abstract

A system based on active RFID and aiming to assist the production cycle of a factory producing bentonite-coal dust mixtures and lustrous carbon formers for foundries is presented and discussed. The vehicular system works in a very harsh environment and uses RFID tags as beacons to locate the various area of the factory. An algorithm to discriminate among different tags is presented and discussed. The plant is now integrated within the production cycle and is showing very satisfactory performances.

Abstract

Oxidative catalysis by metalloporphyrin systems occupies a prominent role in the current research in the fields of chemical and biological catalysis. Our particular interest and approach has been to collect in the same volume papers dealing with both the chemical and biological aspects of the reactivity of heme systems because of the realization that a better understanding of the complementary discipline can be extremely useful for the researchers from either field. The current progress of the research on synthetic metalloporphyrin catalysts has led to the development of several systems that are able to reproduce the heme-enzyme mediated oxygenation and oxidation reactions, at least in terms of reaction types, mechanisms and often rates. These achievements have stimulated the of creating metalloporphyrin catalysts which are both ambitious project efficient and stable enough to become competitive for large-scale industrial processes. Although this project is still far from being realized, the efforts in this direction parallel those aimed at the application of heme enzymes to chemical technologies, e. g. for the mild, selective oxidation of organics or the detoxification of pollutants. Both the two approaches will be advantageous because while the enzyme systems can achieve selectivities which are probably unattainable by synthetic catalysts, the latter can be active under experimental conditions that would readily inactivate the enzymes.

Abstract

European Vegetation Archive (EVA) was announced as a new initiative of the European Vegetation Survey at the EVS Meeting in Vienna in 2012. The aim of EVA is to create a centralized database of European vegetation plots by storing copies of national and regional databases on a single software platform using a unified taxonomic reference database. EVA does not affect the ongoing independent developments of source databases and it guarantees that data property rights of the original contributors are respected. EVA Data Property and Governance Rules were approved and the EVA website (www.euroveg.org/eva-database) was established in 2012. Since then several European vegetation-plot databases joined EVA. In the framework of the parallel Braun-Blanquet project, we obtained experience with handling multiple databases based on different taxonomies, and a prototype of Turboveg 3 was developed as a software tool for joint management of multiple databases. This prototype has recently been accepted as the platform for technical management of EVA according to the approved Rules. A specific challenge for EVA is joining multiple species lists with different taxonomies used in national and regional databases. To solve this issue, EVA took over the SynBioSys Taxon Database, developed earlier for the SynBioSys Europe project, which is a system of taxon names and concepts used in the individual databases and their matches to a unified list of European flora. This taxon database is currently being extended to account for new vegetation-plot databases and revised by taxonomic experts working in a newly established EVA Taxonomic Advisory Board. These technical developments made it possible that after two years since its formal establishment, first data sets could be uploaded to EVA, forming a basis for large-scale analyses of European vegetation diversity for both scientific purposes and applications.

25. THE FLOATING ISLAND OF POSTA FIBRENO: AN EXAMPLE OF A RELIC MIRE IN CENTRAL ITALY

Abstract

The lake of Posta Fibreno (S Latium, C. Italy), is a biotope where some outstanding anomalies in the flora and vegetation of the wetlands of peninsular Italy are concentrated. Here the southernmost Italian populations of Sphagnum palustre occur on the small surface of a floating island, a cup-formed core of Sphagnum peat and rhizomes of Helophytes, erratically floating on the water-body of a submerged doline, annexed to the easternmost edge of the lake, characterised by the extension of a large reed bed. A strong correlation between characteristics of the physical environment and the structure of the vegetation on the island, points out the descriptive ability of the communities recorded in the site to reconstruc the genesis of the biotope.

Abstract

Measurements of inclusive charged-hadron transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity distributions are presented for proton-proton collisions at root s = 0.9 and 2.36 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector during the LHC commissioning in December 2009. For non-single-diffractive interactions, the average charged-hadron transverse momentum is measured to be 0.46 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 0.9 TeV and 0.50 +/- 0.01 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) GeV/c at 2.36 TeV, for pseudorapidities between -2.4 and +2.4. At these energies, the measured pseudorapidity densities in the central region, dN(ch)/d eta vertical bar(vertical bar eta vertical bar and pp collisions. The results at 2.36 TeV represent the highest-energy measurements at a particle collider to date.

Abstract

Cytotoxicity, morphological transformation and cellular retention have been studied in BALB/3T3 Cl A 31-1-1 cells for ammonium or sodium vanadate [vanadium(V)] and for vanadyl sulphate [vanadium(IV)]. A morphological transformation focus assay showed transforming activity for vanadium(V) (P less than 0.005 at concentrations of 3 x 10(-6) or higher) while vanadium(IV) was not transforming in the cells. Cytotoxicity was higher for vanadium(V) than for vanadium(IV); this was particularly clear at doses from 5 x 10(-6) to 5 x 10(-5) M. The cellular retention of both vanadate and vanadyl compounds at 24, 48 and 72 h incubation was similar. At concentrations lower than 10(-6) M vanadate, the retention was linear with the dose, while at higher exposures the vanadium taken up by the cells levelled off or slightly decreased. Exposure to 10(-6) M and 10(-5) M vanadium(V) for 3 and 24 h as well as to 10(-6) M for 48 and 72 h yielded greater than 94% vanadium in the cytosol, but exposure to a toxic dose (10(-5) M) for 48 and 72 h yielded 20% vanadium associated with cellular organelles, which suggests that some sites in the cytosol become saturated with vanadium. The corresponding gel-filtration experiments indicate that a redistribution of the element among the cytosol components occurs with time.

Abstract

A descriptive statistical approach to the causalistic distribution of Quercus suber in Lazio (Central Italy), based on presence/absence data and mean values of an array of environmental variables standardized on a geographical 6,9 x 5,5 Km grid, shows that only temperature, precipitation, elevation and slope are significant. At this scale, soil conditions and aspect are apparently no limiting factors to the colonization ability of the species. A simulated potential range, based on this parameterization, identifies a larger area than the one occupied by the species today. It suggests that competition and human disturbance might account for the large gaps and discontinuities in the real range. Since inland disjunct outposts still lie either outside or at the boundary of this simulated range, their establishment is likely to have originated under macroclimatic conditions different from the present day ones.

Abstract

The reactivity of nitrite towards the copper(II) and copper(I) centers of a series of complexes with tridentate nitrogen donor ligands has been investigated. The ligands are bis[(1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)methyl]amine (1-bb), bis[2-(1-methylbenzimidazol-2-yl)ethyl]amine (2-bb), and bis[2-(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)ethyl]amine (ddah) and carry two terminal benzimidazole (1-bb, 2-bb) or pyrazole (ddah) rings and a central amine donor residue. While 2-bb and ddah form two adjacent six-membered chelate rings on metal coordination, 1-bb forms two smaller rings of five members. The binding affinity of nitrite and azide to the Cu(II) complexes (ClO4 − as counterion) has been determined in solution. The association constants for the two ligands are similar, but nitrite is a slightly stronger ligand than azide when it binds as a bidentate donor. The X-ray crystal structure of the nitrite complex [Cu(ddah)(NO2)]ClO4 (final R=0.056) has been determined: triclinic P1¯space group, a=8.200(2) A, b=9.582(3) A, c=15.541(4) A. It may be described as a perchlorate salt of a “supramolecular” species resulting from the assembly of two complex cations and one sodium perchlorate unit. The copper stereochemistry in the complex is intermediate between SPY and TBP, and nitrite binds to Cu(II) asymmetrically, with Cu-O distances of 2.037(2) and 2.390(3) A and a nearly planar CuO2N cycle. On standing, solutions of [Cu(ddah)(NO2)]ClO4 in methanol produce the dinuclear complex [Cu(ddah)(OMe)]2(ClO4)2, containing dibridging methoxy groups. In fact the crystal structure analysis (final R=0.083) showed that the crystals are built up by dinuclear cations, arranged on a crystallographic symmetry center, and perchlorate anions. Electrochemical analysis shows that binding of nitrite to the Cu(II) complexes of 2-bb and ddah shifts the reduction potential of the Cu(II)/Cu(I) couple towards negative values by about 0.3 V. The thermodynamic parameters of the Cu(II)/Cu(I) electron transfer have also been analyzed. The mechanism of reductive activation of nitrite to nitric oxide by the Cu(I) complexes of 1-bb, 2-bb, and ddah has been studied. The reaction requires two protons per molecule of nitrite and Cu(I). Kinetic experiments show that the reaction is first order in [Cu(I)] and [H+] and exhibits saturation behavior with respect to nitrite concentration. The kinetic data show that [Cu(2-bb)]+ is more efficient than [Cu(1-bb)]+ and [Cu(ddah)]+ in reducing nitrite.

Abstract

Ventricular premature complexes (VPCs) after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remain important determinants of survival in the post-thrombolytic era. The role of thrombolysis, left ventricular function, and Holter ST-segment depression in modulating VPC frequency is unclear. In a placebo-controlled, randomized study of tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) in 103 patients with AMI (Tissue Plasminogen Activator: Toronto study), VPC frequency and ST depression on Holter monitoring (day 7), ejection fraction by radionuclide scan (day 9), and infarct artery patency and cross-sectional area on day 1 (n = 42) were assessed. After administering t-PA, VPC frequency was 10 +/- 58/hour (mean +/- SD), similar to that after placebo (23.5 +/- 91.7, p = NS). However, patients with ST depression had greater VPC frequency (56 +/- 140/hour) than those without it (1.3 +/- 2.6/hour, p = 0.05). Ejection fraction was negatively correlated with VPC frequency (r = -0.33, p0.001). By multivariate analysis, ejection fraction (F = 7.0, p0.01) and ST depression (F = 5.8, p0.02) were the only independent predictors of VPC frequency. In this placebo-controlled study, VPC frequency after AMI was not related to thrombolytic administration but was associated with ST depression and ejection fraction. This suggests that the underlying extent of both infarcted and ischemic myocardium is important in modulating ventricular arrhythmias after AMI.

Abstract

Correlation of the structure of enzymes with their catalytic activity is one of the most fundamental challenges of structural biology. Ultimately, the various features that characterize the action of enzymes may be understood at a molecular level. These include physical factors, i.e. how the substrates are bound, and chemical factors, i.e. the chemical mechanism of the enzymatic reaction. Our concern here is mostly with the first of these points, since all current evidence shows that binding of the substrates to the active site of heme proteins involved in biological oxidations is the main source of chemoselectivity associated with the enzyme catalyzed reactions, including stereoselectivity and enantioselectivity.

Abstract

We performed Holter monitoring on days 4 and 7 after acute myocardial infarction in 109 patients to assess whether ST segment shift would identify those with more severe coronary artery disease, left ventricular dysfunction and unfavorable prognosis.Silent myocardial ischemia is a frequent and prognostically significant event after acute myocardial infarction. However, the specific pathophysiologic mechanisms and the impact of thrombolytic therapy are uncertain.In addition to Holter monitoring, patients underwent exercise testing, radionuclide angiography on days 1 and 9 and quantitative coronary angiography on day 9.Thirty-five patients (32%) had ST segment depression and had similar recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (rt-PA) treatment assignment and a reduced cross-sectional area of the infarct-related artery (0.59 +/- 0.57 vs. 1.04 +/- 1.26 mm2, p0.05). Global left ventricular function improved from day 1 to day 9 in patients without (4% +/- 11%, p0.001) but not in those with (0% +/- 7%) ST segment depression. In-hospital event rates were similar; however, follow-up 18 +/- 11 months after hospital discharge revealed a greater frequency of death and recurrent myocardial infarction in patients with compared with those without ST segment depression (27% vs. 6%, p = 0.03).After acute myocardial infarction, approximately one third of patients have ST segment depression on Holter monitoring, independent of the use of thrombolytic therapy. The unfavorable prognosis observed in these patients may be related to greater lumen obstruction in the infarct-related artery and lack of improvement in left ventricular function.

The news media are often criticized for exaggerated coverage of weak science. Press releases, a source of information for many journalists, might be a source of those exaggerations.To characterize research press releases from academic medical centers.Content analysis.Press releases from 10 medical centers at each extreme of U.S. NewsWorld Report's rankings for medical research.Press release quality.Academic medical centers issued a mean of 49 press releases annually. Among 200 randomly selected releases analyzed in detail, 87 (44%) promoted animal or laboratory research, of which 64 (74%) explicitly claimed relevance to human health. Among 95 releases about primary human research, 22 (23%) omitted study size and 32 (34%) failed to quantify results. Among all 113 releases about human research, few (17%) promoted studies with the strongest designs (randomized trials or meta-analyses). Forty percent reported on the most limited human studies--those with uncontrolled interventions, small samples (30 participants), surrogate primary outcomes, or unpublished data--yet 58% lacked the relevant cautions.The effects of press release quality on media coverage were not directly assessed.Press releases from academic medical centers often promote research that has uncertain relevance to human health and do not provide key facts or acknowledge important limitations.National Cancer Institute.

Abstract

A method to measure solvent evaporation rates under controlled conditions is described. Vapors generated within a thermostated glass cell are swept by a nitrogen current and periodically injected into a chromatographic column and detector by means of an automatic sampling valve. Solvents with evaporation rates equal to or lower than that of cyclohexane may be studied. As the evaporative cooling is negligible, the method offers a definite advantage over classical gravimetric techniques.

Abstract

A preliminary investigation on the torsional hypersurface of the alanine Schiff bases with salicylaldehyde and pyridoxal was carried out by means of a van der Waals potential calculation. This allowed location of a few stable conformers, which were then subjected to a PCILO optimization. On the lowest energy conformer, an electrostatic molecular potential map was generated through a CNDO/2 calculation. Another pyridoxal model system, where the N-pyridoxylidene-alanine Schiff base is coordinated to a metal ion, was examined in order to check the relationship between the conformation at the amino acid α-carbon atom and the reactivity toward the CαH proton abstraction process. It has been found that the highest energy conformer containing a pseudoaxial CαH bond produces the most stable base adduct and carbanion species, in agreement with Dunathan's hypothesis. The potential biological significance of these results is discussed.

Abstract

A gas chromatographic method for the determination of isomeric distribution in toluenesulfonic acid samples is described. The acids are transformed into the corresponding ethyl esters by reaction with triethyl orthoformate in toluene. The reaction mixture can be injected, without further purification, into the gas chromatograph. The separation is best performed on columns containing OV-210 or polyphenyl ether (6 rings) as the stationary phase.

Abstract

An open, cross-over study was performed on a population of 24 geriatric patients hospitalized because of depressive syndrome. They were subdivided, according to Hamilton's Scale as modified for the aged, into low- and high-score subgroups. The study period covered 2 months. Half the patients received acetylcarnitine for 1 month and placebo thereafter (Group A); the other half received placebo and acetyl-carnitine thereafter (Group B). Statistical evaluation was twofold: parametrical analysis of variance was carried out on 4 subgroups (A1, A2, B1 and B2) and analysis of the score percentage modifications before and after treatment was performed on Groups A and B. The experimental results showed that acetylcarnitine treatment was highly effective and statistically significant in subgroups A1/B1, A2/B2, A1, B1 and B2. In particular, it should be noted that depressive tendencies were significantly modified in most groups, whereas general somatic symptoms as well as anxiety, asthenia and sleep disturbances proved to be little affected. Clinical evaluation, carried out by calculation of modifications in pre- and post-treatment score percentages, provided clear evidence that acetylcarnitine was particularly effective in patients showing more serious clinical symptoms. The drug caused no side-effects at the doses and regimens used.

45. Disinfection with gaseous formaldehyde. First Part: Bactericidal and sporicidal effectiveness of formaldehyde with and without formation of a condensing layer

Abstract

Suspensions of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Streptococcus faecium ATCC 6057, and of spores of Bacillus subtilis var. niger DSM 675 dried on polished stainless steel carriers were exposed in a model chamber to 3.2 mg HCHO l-1 air at temperatures of 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 degrees C and the kinetics of their inactivation were determined by successive colony counting during the exposures. The HCHO treatment was carried out once with the formation of a condensing layer on the carriers and once without recondensation, at a RH of about 90%. In both procedures the cells or spores were suspended and dried in saline peptone water and additionally, in the case of the exposure without condensate layer, suspended in peptone water only. For S. aureus and S. faecium, significant differences between the two processes were only observed at 20 degrees C, whereby S. aureus showed for example a D-value of 14.8 minutes and after an exposure with condensate a D-value of 28.1 min. However at higher temperatures the effectiveness of HCHO in gaseous or condensate form was rather similar. At 35 degrees C the D-values after exposure to HCHO in condensate and gaseous form was for S. aureus 4.1 min and 5.9 min respectively, whereas after treatment at 40 degrees C D-values of 3.2 min and 3.8 min respectively were determined. At 35 and 40 degrees C D-values for S. aureus suspended in peptone water and exposed to gaseous HCHO were 50% lower than when suspended in saline peptone water. At lower exposure temperatures large differences were not registered. For the B. subtilis spores exposure to formaldehyde without condensation showed D-values of 34.8 and 5.6 min at 20 and 40 degrees C respectively. These are 8- and 4-fold lower than those of a corresponding exposure with a condensing layer. No D-value differences were observed for spores suspended and dried in saline peptone water or in peptone water after exposures to gaseous formaldehyde.

After a formaldehyde exposition of 100 cm2 aluminium plates covered with a structured lacquer during 60 min at 40 degrees C and relative humidity of about 90% in a model chamber formaldehyde residues of 9.5, 21.9 and 57 micrograms HCHO 100 cm-2 were recorded for plates exposed respectively to 0.75, 1.5 and 3.2 mg HCHO l-1 air. In the model chamber tempered at 40 degrees C the reduction of the HCHO residues after an additional 60 min ventilation with an internal air circulation was 63%. After a passive aeration for 60 min in a room at ambient temperature (24 +/- 3 degrees C) without ventilation the formaldehyde residues decreased by 70-74%. In a heating cabinet tempered at 40 degrees C after an internal active aeration of 60 minutes the residual formaldehyde diminished by 76-82%.

Abstract

The highest rate of inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), Streptococcus faecium (ATCC 6057) and spores of Bacillus subtilis var. niger (DSM 675) was observed at a relative humidity (RH) of 90-95%. At a RH of 60% D 0.75 mg HCHO l-1 air at 45 degrees C-values of 35 min and over 65 min were determined for S. aureus and for B. subtilis spores which decreased to D = 2.9 min and D = 20 min respectively at a RH of 90%. At 45 degrees C, an optimal formaldehyde (HCHO) concentration for the inactivation of S. aureus was within the range of 0.75 to 1.5 mg HCHO l-1 air, with D-values of 2.9 to 1.8 min respectively and for Bacillus subtilis spores from 1.5 to 3.2 mg HCHO l-1 air with D-values of 10.9 to 4.0 min respectively. The most effective bactericidal and sporicidal activity of HCHO was observed at temperatures ranging from 40 to 45 degrees C. The higher the exposure temperature the lower were the HCHO residues on 100 cm2 aluminium plates with a structured lacquer. Exposure to formaldehyde concentrations of 0.4 mg l-1 air for 60 minutes resulted in lower residual formaldehyde of 5.9, 5.6, 4.7 and 4.5 micrograms HCHO 100 cm-2 sample surface at 30, 35, 40 and 45 degrees C, respectively. In contrast, after exposures to 3.2 mg HCHO l-1 air residues of 48.5, 43.4, 35.6 and 30.6 micrograms HCHO 100 cm-2 were found at the same temperatures.

Abstract

Copper(II) complexes with tridentate Schiff base were studied by EPR, electronic and c.d.spectroscopy. In strong donor media we found simultaneous planar and apical solvent coordination, competition between σ- and π-bonding, x2 − y2 > xy > z2 >xz ~ yz for the order of 3d orbitals. The anomalous Fermi term is rationalized by exchange polarization of partially occupied 4s2 orbital, molecular associations are established from line width variation.

50. Metal Ion Dependence of the Asymmetric Transamination of Phenylpyruvic Acid by Pyridoxamine in the Presence of β-Cyclodextrin

Abstract

Transamination reactions of phenylpyruvic acid and pyridoxamine in the presence of metal ions and B-cyclodextrin as a chiral auxiliary have been investigated in neutral aqueous solution. The rate and extent of the transamination, and the asymmetric induction observed in the reaction depend upon the nature of the metal ion. In particular, while Zn2+and C02+yield preferentially the aldimine complex of L-phenylalanine, Cu2' yields preferentially the complex of D-phenylalanine and Ni2+only the racemic product. It is proposed that the ketimine complexes are bound to B-cyclodextrin through the phenyl group of the keto acid residue and that the stereoselectivity of the reaction is originated by some direct interaction of the hydroxyl groups of the cyclodextrin moiety and the metal ions. Although the extent of asymmetric induction is modest in these simple systems (10-20°/0 optical purities), the present results show that transition metal complexes can play a prominent role in determining the steric course of the asymmetric reaction.
