We present Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation escape fraction $f_{\rm{esc}}$ measurements for 183 spectroscopically confirmed star-forming galaxies in the redshift range $3.11 < z < 3.53$ in the \textit{Chandra} Deep Field South. We use ground-based imaging to measure $f_{\rm{esc}}$, and use ground- and space-based photometry to derive galaxy physical properties using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We additionally derive [O III]+H$\beta$ equivalent widths (that fall in the observed K band) by including nebular emission in the SED fitting. After removing foreground contaminants, we report the discovery of 11 new candidate LyC leakers, with absolute LyC escape fractions, $f_{\rm{esc}}$ in the range $0.14-0.85$. From non-detections, we place $1\sigma$ upper limits of $f_{\rm{esc}}300$A. For candidate LyC leakers, we find a weak negative correlation between $f_{\rm{esc}}$ and galaxy stellar masses, no correlation between $f_{\rm{esc}}$ specific star-formation rates (sSFRs) and a positive correlation between $f_{\rm{esc}}$ and EW$_0$([O III]+H$\beta$). The weak/no correlations between stellar mass and sSFRs may be explained by misaligned viewing angles and/or non-coincident timescales of starburst activity and periods of high $f_{\rm{esc}}$. Alternatively, escaping radiation may predominantly occur in highly localised star-forming regions, or $f_{\rm{esc}}$ measurements may be impacted by stochasticity of the intervening neutral medium, obscuring any global trends with galaxy properties. These hypotheses have important consequences for models of reionisation.

Utilizing spectroscopic observations taken for the VIMOS Ultra-Deep Survey (VUDS), new observations from Keck/DEIMOS, and publicly available observations of large samples of star-forming galaxies, we report here on the relationship between the star formation rate (SFR) and the local environment ($\delta_{gal}$) of galaxies in the early universe ($2, Comment: v2, 24 pages, nine figures, accepted to A&A after minor changes to language and formatting

The circumgalactic medium (CGM) is the location where the interplay between large-scale outflows and accretion onto galaxies occurs. Metals in different ionization states flowing between the circumgalactic and intergalactic mediums are affected by large galactic outflows and low-ionization state inflowing gas. Observational studies on their spatial distribution and their relation with galaxy properties may provide important constraints on models of galaxy formation and evolution. To better understand the ionizing properties of galaxies in the EoR, we investigate deep, rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectra of $\simeq 500$ star-forming galaxies at $3 \leq z \leq 5$ selected from the public ESO-VANDELS spectroscopic survey. The absolute ionizing photon escape fraction ($f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$) is derived by combining absorption line measurements with estimates of the UV attenuation. The ionizing production efficiency ($\xi_{ion}$) is calculated by fitting the far-UV (FUV) stellar continuum of the VANDELS galaxies. We find that the $f_{\rm esc}^{\rm abs}$ and $\xi_{ion}$ parameters increase towards low-mass, blue UV-continuum slopes and strong Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxies, and both are just slightly higher-than-average for the UV-faintest galaxies in the sample. Potential Lyman Continuum Emitters (LCEs) and selected Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) show systematically higher $\xi_{ion}$ ($\log \xi_{ion}$ (Hz\erg) $\approx 25.38, 25.41$) than non-LCEs and non-LAEs ($\log \xi_{ion}$ (Hz\erg) $\approx 25.18, 25.14$) at similar UV magnitudes. This indicates very young underlying stellar populations ($\approx 10~{\rm Myr}$) at relatively low metallicities ($\approx 0.2~{\rm Z_{\odot}}$). The FUV non-ionizing spectra of potential LCEs is characterized by very blue UV slopes ($\leq -2$), enhanced Ly$\alpha$ emission ($\leq -25$A), strong UV nebular lines (e.g., high CIV1550/CIII]1908 $\geq 0.75$ ratios), and weak absorption lines ($\leq 1$A). The latter suggests the existence of low gas-column-density channels in the interstellar medium which enables the escape of ionizing photons. By comparing our VANDELS results against other surveys in the literature, our findings imply that the ionizing budget in the EoR was likely dominated by UV-faint, low-mass and dustless galaxies., Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS on April 24, 2023

Gaseous flows inside and outside galaxies are key to understanding galaxy evolution, as they regulate their star formation activity across cosmic time. We study the ISM kinematics of 330 CIII or HeII emitters, using far-UV ISM absorption lines detected in the VANDELS spectra. These galaxies span a broad range of stellar masses M$_\ast$ from $10^8$ to $10^{11}$ M$_\odot$, and SFRs from 1 to 500 M$_\odot$/yr, in the redshift range between 2 and 5. We find that the bulk ISM velocity v$_{ism}$ is globally in outflow, with v$_{ism}$ of -60 $\pm$ 10 km/s for low ionization gas traced by SiII 1260 Angstrom, CII 1334, SiII 1526, and AlII 1670, and v$_{ism}$ of -160 $\pm$ 30 and -170 $\pm$ 30 km/s for higher ionization gas traced respectively by AlIII 1854-1862 and SiIV 1393-1402. Interestingly, BPASS models are able to better reproduce the stellar continuum around the SiIV doublet than other stellar population templates. For individual galaxies, $34\%$ of the sample has a positive ISM velocity shift, almost double the fraction reported at lower redshifts. Comparing v$_{ism}$ to the host galaxies properties, we find no significant correlations with M$_\ast$ or SFR, and only a marginally significant dependence (at $\sim 2\sigma$) on morphology-related parameters, with slightly higher velocities in galaxies of smaller size (probed by the equivalent radius), higher concentration, and higher SFR surface density. The outflows are consistent with models of accelerating, momentum-driven winds, with densities decreasing towards the outskirts. Our moderately lower ISM velocities compared to those found in similar studies at lower redshifts suggest that inflows and internal turbulence might play an increased role at $z>2$. We estimate mass outflow rates comparable to the SFRs of the galaxies, and an average escape velocity of 625 km/s, suggesting that most of the ISM will remain bound to the galaxy halo., Comment: 24 pages, 2 tables and 20 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. In the local universe, galaxies in clusters show different properties compared to more isolated systems. Understanding how this difference originates and whether it is already in place at high redshift is still a matter of debate. Thanks to uniquely deep optical spectra from the VANDELS survey, we investigate environmental effects on the stellar mass-metallicity relation (MZR) for a sample of ~1000 star-forming galaxies at 2, Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A ; 22 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables, and 1 Appendix

We present results from the NIRVANDELS survey investigating the gas-phase metallicity ($\mathrm{Z}_{\mathrm{gas}}$, tracing O/H) and stellar metallicity ($Z_{\star}$, tracing Fe/H) of 33 star-forming galaxies at redshifts $2.95 < z < 3.80$. Based on a combined analysis of deep optical and near-IR spectra, tracing the rest-frame far ultraviolet and rest-frame optical respectively, we present the first simultaneous determination of the stellar and gas-phase mass-metallicity relationships (MZRs) at $z\simeq3.4$. In both cases, we find that metallicity increases with increasing stellar mass ($M_{\star}$), and that the power-law slope at $M_{\star} \lesssim 10^{10} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ of both MZRs scales as $Z \propto M_{\star}^{0.3}$. Comparing the stellar and gas-phase MZRs, we present direct evidence for super-solar O/Fe ratios (i.e., $\alpha$-enhancement) at $z>3$, finding $\mathrm{(O/Fe)}\simeq (2.54 \pm 0.38) \times \mathrm{(O/Fe)}_{\odot}$, with no clear dependence on $M_{\star}$., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS accepted

We study the projected spatial offset between the ultraviolet continuum and Ly$\alpha$ emission for 65 lensed and unlensed galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization ($5\leq z\leq7$), the first such study at these redshifts, in order to understand the potential for these offsets to confuse estimates of the Ly$\alpha$ properties of galaxies observed in slit spectroscopy. While we find that ~40% of galaxies in our sample show significant projected spatial offsets ($|\Delta_{Ly\alpha-UV}|$), we find a modest average offset of 0.61$\pm$0.08 kpc. A small fraction of our sample, ~10%, exhibits offsets of 2-4 kpc, sizes that are larger than the effective radii of typical galaxies at these redshifts. An internal comparison and a comparison to studies at lower redshift yielded no significant evidence of evolution of $|\Delta_{Ly\alpha-UV}|$ with redshift. In our own sample, UV-bright galaxies showed offsets a factor of three greater than their fainter counterparts, 0.89$\pm$0.18 vs. 0.27$\pm$0.05 kpc, respectively. We argue that offsets are likely not the result of merging processes, but are rather due to internal anisotropic processes resulting from stellar feedback facilitates Ly$\alpha$ fluorescence and/or backscattering from nearby or outflowing gas. The reduction in the Ly$\alpha$ flux due to offset effects for various observational setups was quantified through mock observations of simple simulations. It was found that the loss of Ly$\alpha$ photons for galaxies with average offsets is not, if corrected for, a limiting factor for all but the narrowest slit widths (, Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. Context. The advent of deep, multi-wavelength surveys, together with the availability of extensive numerical simulations, now allow us for the systematic search and study of (proto)clusters and their surrounding environment as a function of redshift. Aims. We aim to define the environment and to identify overdensities in the VANDELS Chandra Deep Field-South (CDFS) and UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) fields. We want to investigate whether we can use Lyα emission to obtain additional information of the environment properties and whether Lyα emitters show different characteristics as a function of their environment. Methods. We estimated local densities using a three-dimensional algorithm which works in the RA-dec-redshift space. We took advantage of the physical parameters of all the sources in the VANDELS fields to study their properties as a function of environment. In particular, we focused on the rest-frame U − V color to evaluate the stage of evolution of the galaxies located in the overdensities and in the field. Then we selected a sample of 131 Lyα-emitting galaxies (EW(Lyα) > 0 Å), unbiased with respect to environmental density, from the first two seasons of the VANDELS survey to study their location with respect to the over- or under-dense environment and infer whether they are useful tracers of overdense regions. Results. We identify 13 (proto)cluster candidates in the CDFS and nine in the UDS at 2 < z < 4, based on photometric and spectroscopic redshifts from VANDELS and from all the available literature. No significant difference is observed in the rest-frame U − V color between field and galaxies located within the identified overdensities, but the star-forming galaxies in overdense regions tend to be more massive and to have low specific SFRs than in the field. We study the distribution of the VANDELS Lyα emitters (LAEVs) and we find that Lyα emitters lie preferentially outside of overdense regions as the majority of the galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts from VANDELS. The LAEVs in overdense regions tend to have low Lyα equivalent widths and low specific SFRs, and they also tend to be more massive than the LAEVs in the field. Their stacked Lyα profile shows a dominant red peak and a hint of a blue peak. There is evidence that their Lyα emission is more extended and offset with respect to the UV continuum. Conclusions. LAEVs are likely to be influenced by the environment. In fact, our results favour a scenario that implies outflows of low expansion velocities and high HI column densities for galaxies in overdense regions. An outflow with low expansion velocity could be related to the way galaxies are forming stars in overdense regions; the high HI column density can be a consequence of the gravitational potential of the overdensity. Therefore, Lyα-emitting galaxies can provide useful insights on the environment in which they reside.

To identify the galaxies responsible for the reionization of the Universe, we must rely on the investigation of the Lyman Continuum (LyC) properties of z70{\AA}, Lya(ext)70{\AA}), have much higher LyC fluxes compared to the rest of the galaxy population in agreement with theoretical studies and previous observational works. We also find that galaxies with low Lya(ext) have the highest LyC flux: this new correlation seems even stronger than the correlations with high EWLya and small rUV. These results assume that the stacks from all the subsamples present the same statistical contamination from lower redshift interlopers. If we subtract a statistical contamination from low redshift interlopers obtained with dedicated Monte Carlo simulations, from the flux density ratios (fnu(895)/fnu(1470)) of the significant subsamples we find that these samples contain real LyC leaking flux with a very high probability, but the true average escape fractions remain uncertain. Our work indicates that galaxies with very high EWLya, small Lya(ext) and small rUV are very likely the best candidates to show LyC radiation at z=4 and could therefore be the galaxies that contributed more to reionization., Comment: Accepted by A&A

This paper describes the first data release (DR1) of the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS). The DR1 includes all low-resolution spectroscopic data obtained in 276.9 arcmin2 of the CANDELS-COSMOS and CANDELS-ECFDS survey areas, including accurate spectroscopic redshifts z_spec and individual spectra obtained with VIMOS on the ESO-VLT. A total of 698 objects have a measured redshift, with 677 galaxies, two type-I AGN and a small number of 19 contaminating stars. The targets of the spectroscopic survey are selected primarily on the basis of their photometric redshifts to ensure a broad population coverage. About 500 galaxies have z_spec>2, 48 with z_spec>4, and the highest reliable redshifts reach beyond z_spec=6. This dataset approximately doubles the number of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts at z>3 in these fields. We discuss the general properties of the sample in terms of the spectroscopic redshift distribution, the distribution of Lyman-alpha equivalent widths, and physical properties including stellar masses M_star and star formation rates (SFR) derived from spectral energy distribution fitting with the knowledge of z_spec. We highlight the properties of the most massive star-forming galaxies, noting the large range in spectral properties, with Lyman-alpha in emission or in absorption, and in imaging properties with compact, multi-component or pair morphologies. The reionization of the Universe is one of the most important topics of present day astrophysical research. The most plausible candidates for the reionization process are star-forming galaxies, which according to the predictions of the majority of the theoretical and semi-analytical models should dominate the HI ionizing background at z~3. We aim at measuring the Lyman continuum escape fraction, which is one of the key parameters to compute the contribution of star-forming galaxies to the UV background. We have used ultra-deep U-band imaging (U=30.2mag at 1sigma) by LBC/LBT in the CANDELS/GOODS-North field, as well as deep imaging in COSMOS and EGS fields, in order to estimate the Lyman continuum escape fraction of 69 star-forming galaxies with secure spectroscopic redshifts at 3.27L*), while for the faint population (L=0.2L*) the limit to the escape fraction is ~10%. We have computed the contribution of star-forming galaxies to the observed UV background at z~3 and we have found that it is not enough to keep the Universe ionized at these redshifts, unless their escape fraction increases significantly (>10%) at low luminosities (M1500>-19). We compare our results on the Lyman continuum escape fraction of high-z galaxies with recent estimates in the literature and discuss future prospects to shed light on the end of the Dark Ages. In the future, strong gravitational lensing will be fundamental to measure the Lyman continuum escape fraction down to faint magnitudes (M1500~-16) which are inaccessible with the present instrumentation on blank fields., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 16 pages, 6 figures

Resumo: Neste trabalho sao apresentados resultados experimentais do desenvolvimento de formulacoes cerâmicas com capacidade de regular a umidade e, portanto, destinadas a melhorar a qualidade do ar em ambientes controlados, a partir de materias-primas absorventes. O objetivo foi obter uma peca cerâmica com capacidade reguladora de umidade superior a 140 g/m2 em ciclos de 24 h. As materias-primas analisadas foram aluminossilicatos naturais (atapulgitas, bentonitas, sepiolitas ou terras diatomaces), semielaboradas (gibbsita) e sinteticas (silica precipitada e aluminossilicato sintetico absorvente). As materias-primas e as formulacoes foram caracterizadas quanto a sua superficie especifica, distribuicao de tamanho de poros, isotermas de adsorcao de agua, ensaios em câmara climatica e resistencia mecânica a flexao. A sepiolita e o aluminossilicato sintetico foram os que apresentaram as melhores caracteristicas para serem utilizados em formulacoes cerâmicas, sendo 900 °C a temperatura otima de queima para se obter o maximo de regulacao de umidade com resistencia mecânica adequada. Foi obtida uma composicao que pode proporcionar as caracteristicas desejadas.

Thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity and specific heat of several materials used as floor tiles have been measured using the laser flash method. Natural stones, particularly granite, porcelain stoneware and red stoneware materials of low water absorption, are more effective thermal conductors than white stoneware and vinyl, which have thermal conductivities below 1 W m −1 K −1 . Therefore, last two should not be recommended for radiant floor heating applications. Enhancement of thermal conductivity of red and porcelain stoneware has been achieved by adding Al 2 O 3 of certain characteristics to the ceramic paste. In this way, thermal diffusivity increases of up to 50% have been obtained by adding 20 wt.% of Al 2 O 3 particles.

We present MIPS 24 micron observations of the Hubble Deep Field South taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The resulting image is 254 arcmin^2 in size and has a sensitivity ranging between ~12 to ~30 microJy rms, with a median sensitivity of ~20 microJy rms. A total of 495 sources have been cataloged with a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 5 sigma. The source catalog is presented as well as source counts which have been corrected for completeness and flux boosting. The IR sources are then combined with MUSYC optical/NIR and ATHDFS radio observations to obtain redshifts and radio flux densities of the sample. We use the IR/radio flux density ratio (q_24) to explore the IR-radio correlation for this IR sample and find q_24 = 0.71 +- 0.31 for sources detected in both IR and radio. The results are extended by stacking IR sources not detected in the radio observations and we derive an average q_24 for redshift bins between 0 < z < 2.5. We find the high redshift (z > 1) sources have an average q_{24} ratio which is better fit by local LIRG SEDs rather than local ULIRG SEDs, indicating that high redshift ULIRGs differ in their IR/radio properties. So ULIRGs at high redshift have SEDs different from those found locally. Infrared faint radio sources are examined, and while nine radio sources do not have a MIPS detection and are therefore radio-loud AGN, only one radio source has an extreme IRAC 3.6 micron to radio flux density ratio indicating it is a radio-loud AGN at z > 1., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The growing social awareness with regard to sustainable construction and energy efficiency in buildings is leading specifications writers and end users to take into account new construction solutions. However, the introduction of these construction solutions into the market is slow and difficult owing to the limitations of the recognised thermal simulation tools, which do not allow estimations to be made when integrating innovative systems, and to the difficulty of validating their efficiency in actual buildings before marketing them. The present study analyses the energy efficiency of a ventilated façade made up of near-infrared reflective ceramic tiles, by integrating a mathematical model validated in the CIES Living Lab experimental building in Castellón into the EnergyPlus program., La creciente concienciación social respecto a la construcción sostenible y el ahorro energético en edificios está conduciendo a prescriptores y usuarios finales a tomar en consideración nuevas soluciones constructivas. Sin embargo, su introducción en el mercado es lenta y difícil, debido tanto a las limitaciones de las herramientas reconocidas de simulación térmica, que no permiten efectuar estimaciones integrando sistemas innovadores, como a la dificultad para validar su eficiencia en edificios reales previamente a su comercialización. En el presente trabajo se analiza la eficiencia energética de una fachada ventilada resuelta con baldosas cerámicas reflectantes al infrarrojo cercano, mediante la integración en el programa EnergyPlus de un modelo matemático que ha sido validado en el edificio experimental CIES Living Lab de Castellón.

We measured the sizes and morphological parameters of LARS galaxies in the continuum, Lya, and Ha images. We studied morphology by using the Gini coefficient vs M20 and asymmetry vs concentration diagrams. We then simulated LARS galaxies at z~2 and 5.7, performing the same morphological measurements. We also investigated the detectability of LARS galaxies in current deep field observations. The subsample of LAEs within LARS (LARS-LAEs) was stacked to provide a comparison to stacking studies performed at high redshift. We discovered a sample of 250 Ly-Alpha emitting (LAE) galaxies at z=2.1 in an ultra-deep 3727 A narrow-band MUSYC image of the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South. LAEs were selected to have rest-frame equivalent widths (EW) > 20 A and emission line fluxes > 2.0 x 10^(-17)erg /cm^2/s, after carefully subtracting the continuum contributions from narrow band photometry. The median flux of our sample is 4.2 x 10^(-17)erg/cm^2/s, corresponding to a median Lya luminosity = 1.3 x 10^(42) erg/s at z=2.1. At this flux our sample is > 90% complete. Approximately 4% of the original NB-selected candidates were detected in X-rays by Chandra, and 7% were detected in the rest-frame far-UV by GALEX. At luminosity>1.3 x 10^42 erg/s, the equivalent width distribution is unbiased and is represented by an exponential with scale-length of 83+/-10 A. Above this same luminosity threshold, we find a number density of 1.5+/-0.5 x 10^-3 Mpc^-3. Neither the number density of LAEs nor the scale-length of their EW distribution show significant evolution from z=3 to z=2. We used the rest frame UV luminosity to estimate a median star formation rate of 4 M_(sun) /yr. The median rest frame UV slope, parametrized by B-R, is that typical of dust-free, 0.5-1 Gyr old or moderately dusty, 300-500 Myr old populations. Approximately 40% of the sample occupies the z~2 star-forming galaxy locus in the UVR two color diagram. Clustering analysis reveals that LAEs at z=2.1 have r_0=4.8+/-0.9 Mpc and a bias factor b=1.8+/-0.3. This implies that z=2.1 LAEs reside in dark matter halos with median masses Log(M/M_(sun))=11.5^(+0.4)_(-0.5), which are among of the lowest-mass halos yet probed at this redshift. We used the Sheth-Tormen conditional mass function to study the descendants of these LAEs and found that their typical present-day descendants are local galaxies with L* properties, like the Milky Way., 35 pages, 9 figures, ApJ, in press

We describe the results of a new, wide-field survey for z= 3.1 Ly-alpha emission-line galaxies (LAEs) in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDF-S). By using a nearly top-hat 5010 Angstrom filter and complementary broadband photometry from the MUSYC survey, we identify a complete sample of 141 objects with monochromatic fluxes brighter than 2.4E-17 ergs/cm^2/s and observers-frame equivalent widths greater than ~ 80 Angstroms (i.e., 20 Angstroms in the rest-frame of Ly-alpha). The bright-end of this dataset is dominated by x-ray sources and foreground objects with GALEX detections, but when these interlopers are removed, we are still left with a sample of 130 LAE candidates, 39 of which have spectroscopic confirmations. This sample overlaps the set of objects found in an earlier ECDF-S survey, but due to our filter's redder bandpass, it also includes 68 previously uncataloged sources. We confirm earlier measurements of the z=3.1 LAE emission-line luminosity function, and show that an apparent anti-correlation between equivalent width and continuum brightness is likely due to the effect of correlated errors in our heteroskedastic dataset. Finally, we compare the properties of z=3.1 LAEs to LAEs found at z=2.1. We show that in the approximately 1 Gyr after z approximately 3, the LAE luminosity function evolved significantly, with L * fading by approximately 0.4 mag, the number density of sources with L greater than 1.5E42 ergs/s declining by approximately 50%, and the equivalent width scalelength contracting from 70^{+7}_{-5} Angstroms to 50^{+9}_{-6} Angstroms. When combined with literature results, our observations demonstrate that over the redshift range z approximately 0 to z approximately 4, LAEs contain less than approximately 10% of the star-formation rate density of the universe.
