Pegasus IV is a compact, ultra-faint stellar system (${r}_{1/2}={41}_{-6}^{+8}$ pc; MV = −4.25 ± 0.2 mag) located at a heliocentric distance of ${90}_{-6}^{+4}\,\mathrm{kpc}$. Based on spectra of seven nonvariable member stars observed with Magellan/IMACS, we confidently resolve Pegasus IV's velocity dispersion, measuring ${\sigma }_{v}={3.3}_{-1.1}^{+1.7}$ km s−1 (after excluding three velocity outliers); this implies a mass-to-light ratio of ${M}_{1/2}/{L}_{V,1/2}={167}_{-99}^{+224}{M}_{\odot }/{L}_{\odot }$ for the system. From the five stars with the highest signal-to-noise spectra, we also measure a systemic metallicity of [Fe/H] = $-{2.63}_{-0.30}^{+0.26}$ dex, making Pegasus IV one of the most metal-poor ultra-faint dwarfs. We tentatively resolve a nonzero metallicity dispersion for the system. These measurements provide strong evidence that Pegasus IV is a dark-matter-dominated dwarf galaxy, rather than a star cluster. We measure Pegasus IV's proper motion using data from Gaia Early Data Release 3, finding (μα*, μδ) = (0.33 ± 0.07, −0.21 ± 0.08) mas yr−1. When combined with our measured systemic velocity, this proper motion suggests that Pegasus IV is on an elliptical, retrograde orbit, and is currently near its orbital apocenter. Lastly, we identify three potential RR Lyrae variable stars within Pegasus IV, including one candidate member located more than 10 half-light radii away from the system's centroid. The discovery of yet another ultra-faint dwarf galaxy strongly suggests that the census of Milky Way satellites is still incomplete, even within 100 kpc. © 2023. The Author(s). Large fractions of metals are missing from the observable gas-phase in the interstellar medium (ISM) because they are incorporated into dust grains, a phenomenon called dust depletion. The study of dust depletion in the ISM is important to investigate the origin and evolution of metals and cosmic dust. Here we aim at characterizing the dust depletion of several metals from the Milky Way to distant galaxies. We collect ISM metal column densities from absorption-line spectroscopy in the literature, and in addition, we determine Ti and Ni column densities from a sample of 70 damped Lyman-$\alpha$ absorbers (DLAs) towards quasars, observed with UVES/VLT. We use ISM relative abundances to estimate the dust depletion of 18 metals (C, P, O, Cl, Kr, S, Ge, Mg, Si, Cu, Co, Mn, Cr, Ni, Al, Ti, Zn and Fe) for different environments (the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds (MCs), DLAs towards quasars and towards gamma-ray bursts). We observe linear relations between the depletion of each metal and the strength of dust depletion, which we trace with the observed [Zn/Fe]. In the neutral ISM of the MCs we find small deviations from linearity observed as an overabundance of the $\alpha$-elements Ti, Mg, S and an underabundance of Mn. The deviations disappear if we assume that all OB stars observed towards the MCs in our sample have an $\alpha$-element enhancement and Mn underabundance. This may imply that the MCs have been recently enriched in $\alpha$-elements, potentially due to recent bursts of star formation. The observed strong correlations of the depletion sequences of the metals all the way from low metallicity QSO-DLAs to the Milky Way suggest that cosmic dust has a common origin, independently of the star formation history, which varies significantly between these different galaxies. The star NGC2004#115 in the LMC, originally classified as an (SB1) Be spectroscopic binary, bears some morphological resemblance to the Galactic systems LB-1 and HR 6819, both of which are proposed as either Be+black hole (BH) or Be+stripped He-star systems. Two data-sets (ESO/VLT and SALT) of multi-epoch optical spectra of NGC 2004#115, separated by baseline of $\sim$20 years, lead us conclude it is a triple system hosting an inner binary with a period of 2.92 d, eccentricity $\sim$0.0 and mass function $\sim$0.07 $M_\odot$. The inner binary harbours a B-type star (the primary) with projected rotational velocity of 10km/s, and luminosity $\log L/L_\odot$=3.87, contributing $\sim$60% of the V-band light to the system. The secondary is not detected, while the tertiary, which contributes 40% of the light, is tentatively identified as a less luminous B-type star with high projected rotational velocity. No ellipsoidal light variability is detected, with stringent limits being set by MACHO and Gaia data. Assuming the primary to be a main sequence star yields a mass of 8.6$ M_\odot$, while the additional assumption of synchronous rotation constrains the inclination to be almost pole-on with i~9 degrees, implying the secondary is a BH with a mass of $\sim$25 $M_\odot$. A low mass stripped star with similar luminosity is ruled out as a potential solution as its mass implies a Roche radius that is substantially smaller than the stellar radius. The outer period likely exceeds 120 days and, while the disk-like emission is variable (it is almost absent in the SALT dataset), it may be associated with the inner binary rather than the rapidly rotating tertiary. XMM-Newton provides an upper limit of 5x$10^{33}$ ergs/s on the X-ray flux, consistent with, though not constraining of, the system hosting a quiescent B+BH binary. Without doubt, mass transfer in close binary systems contributes to the populations of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. However, the binary formation channel is so far not well explored. We want to remedy this by exploring large grids of detailed binary and single star evolution models computed with the publicly available MESA code, for a metallicity appropriate for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The binary models are calculated through Roche-lobe overflow and mass transfer, until the initially more massive star exhausts helium in its core. We distinguish models of WR and helium stars based on the estimated stellar wind optical depth. We use these models to build a synthetic WR population, assuming constant star formation. Our models can reproduce the WR population of the LMC to significant detail, including the number and luminosity functions of the main WR subtypes. We find that for binary fractions of 100% (50%), all LMC WR stars below $10^6\,L_{\odot}$ ($10^{5.7}\,L_{\odot}$) are stripped binary mass donors. We also identify several insightful mismatches. With a single star fraction of 50\%, our models produce too many yellow supergiants, calling either for a larger initial binary fraction, or for enhanced mass-loss near the Humphreys-Davidson limit. Our models predict more long-period WR binaries than observed, arguably due to an observational bias towards short periods. Our models also underpredict the shortest-period WR binaries, which may have implications for understanding the progenitors of double black hole mergers. The fraction of binary produced WR stars may be larger than often assumed, and outline the risk to mis-calibrate stellar physics when only single star models are used to reproduce the observed WR stars., 15 pages + 13 pages appendix, 14 figures, 2 tables

Star-forming galaxies are composed of various types of galaxies. However, the luminosity functions at z ≳ 4–5 suggest that most galaxies have a relatively low stellar mass (log Mstar ∼ 10) and a low dust attenuation (AFUV ∼ 1.0). The physical properties of these objects are quite homogeneous. We used an approach where we combined their rest-frame far-infrared and submillimeter emissions and utilized the universe and the redshift as a spectrograph to increase the amount of information in a collective way. From a subsample of 27 ALMA-detected galaxies at z > 4.5, we built an infrared spectral energy distribution composite template. It was used to fit, with CIGALE, the 105 galaxies (detections and upper limits) in the sample from the far-ultraviolet to the far-infrared. The derived physical parameters provide information to decipher the nature of the dust cycle and of the stellar populations in these galaxies. The derived IR composite template is consistent with the galaxies in the studied sample. A delayed star formation history with τmain = 500 Myr is slightly favored by the statistical analysis as compared to a delayed with a final burst or a continuous star formation history. The position of the sample in the star formation rate (SFR) versus Mstar diagram is consistent with previous papers. The redshift evolution of the log Mstar versus AFUV relation is in agreement with an evolution in redshift of this relation. This evolution is necessary to explain the cosmic evolution of the average dust attenuation of galaxies. Evolution is also observed in the Ldust/LFUV (IRX) versus UV slope βFUV diagram: younger galaxies have bluer βFUV. We modeled the shift of galaxies in the IRX versus the βFUV diagram with the mass-weighted age as a free parameter, and we provide an equation to make predictions. The large sample studied in this paper is generally consistent with models that assume rapid dust formation from supernovae and removal of dust by outflows and supernovae blasts. However, we find that high mass dusty star-forming galaxies cannot be explained by the models.

(abridged) Quantifying the ISM porosity to ionizing photons in nearby galaxies may improve our understanding of the mechanisms leading to Lyman Continuum photons leakage from galaxies. Primitive galaxies with low metal and dust content have been shown to host a more patchy and porous ISM than their high-metallicity counterparts. To what extent this peculiar structure contributes to the leakage of ionizing photons remains to be quantitatively studied. To address these questions we build a refined grid of models including density-bounded regions and a possible contribution of an X-ray source. Using MULTIGRIS, a new Bayesian code based on Monte Carlo sampling, we combine the models as sectors under various assumptions to extract the probability density distributions of the parameters and infer the corresponding escape fractions from H II regions (fesc,HII). We apply this new code to a sample of 39 well-know local starbursting dwarf galaxies from the Dwarf Galaxy Survey. We confirm previous results hinting at an increased porosity to ionizing photons of the ISM in low-metallicity galaxies and provide, for the first time, quantitative predictions for fesc,HII. The predicted fesc,HII for low-metallicity objects span a large range of values, up to 60%, while the values derived for more metal-rich galaxies are globally lower. We also examine the influence of other parameters on the escape fractions, and find that the specific star-formation rate correlates best with fesc,HII . Finally, we provide observational line ratios which could be used as tracers of the photons escaping from density-bounded regions. Although this multi-sector modelling remains too simple to fully capture the ISM complexity, it can be used to preselect galaxy samples with potential leakage of ionizing photons based on current and up-coming spectral data in unresolved surveys of local and high-redshift galaxies., 39 pages, 24 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We present a rich, multiwavelength, multiscale database built around the PHANGS-ALMA CO$\,$(2-1) survey and ancillary data. We use this database to present the distributions of molecular cloud populations and sub-galactic environments in 80 PHANGS galaxies, to characterize the relationship between population-averaged cloud properties and host galaxy properties, and to assess key timescales relevant to molecular cloud evolution and star formation. We show that PHANGS probes a wide range of kpc-scale gas, stellar, and star formation rate (SFR) surface densities, as well as orbital velocities and shear. The population-averaged cloud properties in each aperture correlate strongly with both local environmental properties and host galaxy global properties. Leveraging a variable selection analysis, we find that the kpc-scale surface densities of molecular gas and SFR tend to possess the most predictive power for the population-averaged cloud properties. Once their variations are controlled for, galaxy global properties contain little additional information, which implies that the apparent galaxy-to-galaxy variations in cloud populations are likely mediated by kpc-scale environmental conditions. We further estimate a suite of important timescales from our multiwavelength measurements. The cloud-scale free-fall time and turbulence crossing time are ${\sim}5{-}20$ Myr, comparable to previous cloud lifetime estimates. The timescales for orbital motion, shearing, and cloud-cloud collisions are longer, ${\sim}100$ Myr. The molecular gas depletion time is $1{-}3$ Gyr and shows weak to no correlations with the other timescales in our data. The chemical evolution of galaxies is governed by the chemical yields from stars, and here we focus on the important contributions from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. AGB nucleosynthesis is, however, still riddled with complexities. Observations from post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars serve as exquisite tools to quantify and understand AGB nucleosynthesis. In this contribution, we review the invaluable constraints provided by post-AGB stars with which to study AGB nucleosynthesis, especially the slow neutron capture nucleosynthesis (i.e., the s-process).

About a quarter of massive binary stars undergo mass transfer while both stars burn hydrogen at their cores, first on the thermal and then on the nuclear timescale. The nuclear timescale mass transfer leads to observable counterparts: the semi-detached so-called massive Algol binaries. However, comprehensive model predictions for these systems are sparse. We study them using a large grid of ~10,000 detailed binary evolution models calculated with the stellar evolution code MESA, covering initial donor masses between 10-40 M$_{\odot}$ and initial orbital periods above 1.4 d, at a metallicity suitable for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our models imply ~30, or ~3% of the ~1,000 core hydrogen burning O-star binaries in the LMC to be currently in the semi-detached phase. Our donor models are up to 25-times more luminous than single stars of identical mass and effective temperature, which agrees with the observed Algols. A comparison of our models with the observed orbital periods and mass ratios implies rather conservative mass transfer in some systems, while very inefficient one in others. This is generally well reproduced by our spin-dependent mass transfer algorithm, except for the lowest considered masses. The observations reflect the slow increase of the surface nitrogen enrichment of the donors during the semi-detached phase all the way to CNO equilibrium. We also investigate the properties of our models after core hydrogen depletion of the donor star, when these models correspond to Wolf-Rayet/helium+OB star binaries. A dedicated spectroscopic survey of massive Algol systems may allow to derive the dependence of the efficiency of thermal timescale mass transfer on the binary parameters, as well as the efficiency of semiconvective mixing in the stellar interior. We present a study of 9242 spectroscopically-confirmed quasars with multi-epoch ugriz photometry from the SDSS Southern Survey. By fitting a separable linear model to each quasar's spectral variations, we decompose their five-band spectral energy distributions into variable (disc) and non-variable (host galaxy) components. In modelling the disc spectra, we include attenuation by dust on the line of sight through the host galaxy to its nucleus. We consider five commonly used attenuation laws, and find that the best description is by dust similar to that of the Small Magellanic Cloud, inferring a lack of carbonaceous grains from the relatively weak 2175AA absorption feature. We go on to construct a composite spectrum for the quasar variations spanning 700 to 8000AA. By varying the assumed power-law $L_{\nu}\propto\nu^\alpha$ spectral slope, we find a best-fit value $\alpha=0.71\pm0.02$, excluding at high confidence the canonical $L_{\nu}\propto\nu^{1/3}$ prediction for a steady-state accretion disc with a $T\propto r^{-3/4}$ temperature profile. The bluer spectral index of the observed quasar variations instead supports the model of Mummery & Balbus in which a steeper temperature profile, $T\propto r^{-7/8}$, develops as a result of finite magnetically-induced stress at the innermost stable circular orbit extracting energy and angular momentum from the black hole spin., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The TESS space telescope is collecting continuous, high-precision optical photometry of stars throughout the sky, including thousands of RR Lyrae stars. In this paper, we present results for an initial sample of 118 nearby RR Lyrae stars observed in TESS Sectors 1 and 2. We use differential-image photometry to generate light curves and analyse their mode content and modulation properties. We combine accurate light curve parameters from TESS with parallax and color information from the Gaia mission to create a comprehensive classification scheme. We build a clean sample, preserving RR Lyrae stars with unusual light curve shapes, while separating other types of pulsating stars. We find that a large fraction of RR Lyrae stars exhibit various low-amplitude modes, but the distribution of those modes is markedly different from those of the bulge stars. This suggests that differences in physical parameters have an observable effect on the excitation of extra modes, potentially offering a way to uncover the origins of these signals. However, mode identification is hindered by uncertainties when identifying the true pulsation frequencies of the extra modes. We compare mode amplitude ratios in classical double-mode stars to stars with extra modes at low amplitudes and find that they separate into two distinct groups. Finally, we find a high percentage of modulated stars among the fundamental-mode pulsators, but also find that at least 28% of them do not exhibit modulation, confirming that a significant fraction of stars lack the Blazhko effect., 35 pages, 26 figures, and a 19-page appendix. The Cepheid period-luminosity (PL) relation (or Leavitt law) has served as the first rung of the most widely used extragalactic distance ladder and is central to the determination of the local value of the Hubble constant ($H_0$). We investigate the influence of metallicity on Cepheid brightness, a term that significantly improves the overall fit of the distance ladder, to better define its wavelength dependence. To this aim, we compare the PL relations obtained for three Cepheid samples having distinct chemical composition (in the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds) and focusing on the use of improved and recent data while covering a metallicity range of about 1 dex. We estimate the metallicity effect (hereafter $\gamma$) in 15 filters from mid-IR to optical wavelengths, including five Wesenheit indices, and we derive a significant metallicity term in all filters, in agreement with recent empirical studies and models, in the sense of metal-rich Cepheids being brighter than metal-poor ones. We describe the contribution of various systematic effects in the determination of the $\gamma$ term. We find no evidence of $\gamma$ changing over the wavelength range $0.5-4.5 \, \rm \mu m$, indicating that the main influence of metallicity on Cepheids is in their luminosity rather than color. Finally, we identify factors that sharpen the empirical constraints on the metallicity term over past studies, including corrections for the depth of the Magellanic Clouds, better-calibrated Cepheid photometry, improved Milky Way extinction estimates, and revised and expanded metallicity measurements in the LMC., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We have conducted a search for open clusters in the vicinity of classical Galactic Cepheids based on high-quality astrometry from the third data release (DR3) of the ESA mission Gaia to improve the calibration of the Leavitt law (LL). Our approach requires no prior knowledge of existing clusters, allowing us to both detect new host clusters and cross-check previously reported associations. Our Gold sample consists of 34 Cepheids residing in 28 open clusters, including 27 fundamental mode and 7 overtone Cepheids. Three new bona fide cluster Cepheids are reported (V0378 Cen, ST Tau, and GH Lup) and the host cluster identifications for three others (VW Cru, IQ Nor, and SX Vel) are corrected. The fraction of Cepheids occurring in open clusters within 2 kpc of the Sun is $f_{CC,2kpc} = 0.088^{+0.029}_{-0.019}$. By combining cluster and field Cepheids, we calibrate the LL for several individual photometric passbands, together with reddening-free Wesenheit magnitudes based on Gaia and HST photometry, while solving for the residual offset applicable to Cepheid parallaxes, $\Delta \varpi_{\mathrm{Cep}}$. The most direct comparison of our results with the SH0ES distance ladder yields excellent ($0.3\sigma$) agreement for both the absolute magnitude of a 10d solar metallicity Cepheid in the near-IR HST Wesenheit magnitudes, $M_{H,1}^W=-5.914\pm 0.017$ mag, and the residual parallax offset, $\Delta \varpi_{\mathrm{Cep}}=-13 \pm 5\,\mu$as. Using the larger sample of 26 Gold cluster Cepheids and $225$ MW Cepheids with recent Gaia DR3 astrometry and photometry, we determine at solar metallicity $M_{G,1}^W = -6.004 \pm 0.019$\,mag and $\Delta \varpi_{\mathrm{Cep}}=-19 \pm 3\,\mu$as. These results mark the currently most accurate absolute calibrations of the Cepheid luminosity scale based purely on observations of MW Cepheids., Comment: 24 pages, Version accepted in A&A

APOGEE is a high-resolution (R sim 22,000), near-infrared, multi-epoch, spectroscopic survey of the Milky Way. The second generation of the APOGEE project, APOGEE-2, includes an expansion of the survey to the Southern Hemisphere called APOGEE-2S. This expansion enabled APOGEE to perform a fully panoramic mapping of all the main regions of the Milky Way; in particular, by operating in the H-band, APOGEE is uniquely able to probe the dust-hidden inner regions of the Milky Way that are best accessed from the Southern Hemisphere. In this paper we present the targeting strategy of APOGEE-2S, with special attention to documenting modifications to the original, previously published plan. The motivation for these changes is explained as well as an assessment of their effectiveness in achieving their intended scientific objective. In anticipation of this being the last paper detailing APOGEE targeting, we present an accounting of all such information complete through the end of the APOGEE-2S project; this includes several main survey programs dedicated to exploration of major stellar populations and regions of the Milky Way, as well as a full list of programs contributing to the APOGEE database through allocations of observing time by the Chilean National Time Allocation Committee (CNTAC) and the Carnegie Institution for Science (CIS). We performed a photometric and spectroscopic analysis of two RV Tauri stars GK Car and GZ Nor. Both objects are surrounded by hot circumstellar dust. Their pulsation periods, derived from ASAS photometric time series, have been used to derive their luminosities and distances via the PLC relation. In addition, for both objects, GAIA distances are available. The Gaia distances and luminosities are consistent with the values obtained from the PLC relationship. GK Car is at distance of 4.5$\pm{1.3}$ kpc and has a luminosity of 1520$\pm{840}$ L$_{\odot}$, while GZ Nor is at distance of 8.4$\pm{2.3}$ kpc and has a luminosity of 1240 $\pm{690}$ L$_{\odot}$. Our abundance analysis reveals that both stars show depletion of refractory elements with [Fe/H]=$-$1.3 and [Zn/Ti]=$+$1.2 for GK Car and [Fe/H]=$-$2.0 and [Zn/Ti]=$+$0.8 for GZ Nor. In the WISE colour-colour diagram, GK Car is located in the RV Tauri box as originally defined by \cite{evans85} and updated by \cite{gezer15}, while GZ Nor is not. Despite this, we argue that both objects are surrounded by a gravitationally bound disc. As depletion is observed in binaries, we postulate that both stars are binaries as well. RV Tauri stars are generally acknowledged to be post$-$AGB stars. Recent studies show that they might be either indeed post$-$AGB or post$-$RGB objects depending on their luminosity. For both objects, the derived luminosities are relatively low for post-AGB objects, however, the uncertainties are quite large. Using data from JWST, we analyse the compact sources (“sparkles”) located around a remarkable z spec = 1.378 galaxy (the ‘Sparkler) that is strongly gravitationally lensed by the z = 0.39 galaxy cluster SMACS J0723.3-7327. Several of these compact sources can be cross-identified in multiple images, making it clear that they are associated with the host galaxy. Combining data from JWSTs Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) with archival data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we perform 0.4–4.4 μm photometry on these objects, finding several of them to be very red and consistent with the colors of quenched, old stellar systems. Morphological fits confirm that these red sources are spatially unresolved even in the strongly magnified JWST/NIRCam images, while the JWST/NIRISS spectra show [Oiii] λ5007 emission in the body of the Sparkler but no indication of star formation in the red compact sparkles. The most natural interpretation of these compact red companions to the Sparkler is that they are evolved globular clusters seen at z = 1.378. Applying Dense Basis spectral energy distribution fitting to the sample, we infer formation redshifts of z form ∼ 7–11 for these globular cluster candidates, corresponding to ages of ∼3.9–4.1 Gyr at the epoch of observation and a formation time just ∼0.5 Gyr after the Big Bang. If confirmed with additional spectroscopy, these red, compact sparkles represent the first evolved globular clusters found at high redshift, which could be among the earliest observed objects to have quenched their star formation in the universe, and may open a new window into understanding globular cluster formation. Tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs) are gravitationally bound condensations of gas and stars that formed during galaxy interactions. Here we present multi-configuration ALMA observations of J1023+1952, a TDG in the interacting system Arp 94, where we resolved CO(2–1) emission down to giant molecular clouds (GMCs) at 0.6400 ∼ 45 pc resolution. We find a remarkably high fraction of extended molecular emission (∼80−90%), which is filtered out by the interferometer and likely traces diffuse gas. We detect 111 GMCs that give a similar mass spectrum as those in the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies (a truncated power law with a slope of −1.76±0.13). We also study Larson’s laws over the available dynamic range of GMC properties (∼2 dex in mass and ∼1 dex in size): GMCs follow the sizemass relation of the Milky Way, but their velocity dispersion is higher such that the size-linewidth and virial relations appear superlinear, deviating from the canonical values. The global molecular-to-atomic gas ratio is very high (∼1) while the CO(2–1)/CO(1–0) ratio is quite low (∼0.5), and both quantities vary from north to south. Star formation predominantly takes place in the south of the TDG, where we observe projected offsets between GMCs and young stellar clusters ranging from ∼50 pc to ∼200 pc; the largest offsets correspond to the oldest knots, as seen in other galaxies. In the quiescent north, we find more molecular clouds and a higher molecular-to-atomic gas ratio (∼1.5); atomic and diffuse molecular gas also have a higher velocity dispersion there. We present a spectroscopic analysis of the most rapidly rotating stars currently known, VFTS 102 ($v_{e} \sin i = 649 \pm 52$ km s$^{-1}$; O9: Vnnne+) and VFTS 285 ($v_{e} \sin i = 610 \pm 41$ km s$^{-1}$; O7.5: Vnnn), both members of the 30 Dor complex in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This study is based on high resolution ultraviolet spectra from HST/COS and optical spectra from VLT X-shooter plus archival VLT GIRAFFE spectra. We utilize numerical simulations of their photospheres, rotationally distorted shape, and gravity darkening to calculate model spectral line profiles and predicted monochromatic absolute fluxes. We use a guided grid search to investigate parameters that yield best fits for the observed features and fluxes. These fits produce estimates of the physical parameters for these stars (plus a Galactic counterpart, $\zeta$ Oph) including the equatorial rotational velocity, inclination, radius, mass, gravity, temperature, and reddening. We find that both stars appear to be radial velocity constant. VFTS 102 is rotating at critical velocity, has a modest He enrichment, and appears to share the motion of the nearby OB association LH 99. These properties suggest that the star was spun up through a close binary merger. VFTS 285 is rotating at $95\%$ of critical velocity, has a strong He enrichment, and is moving away from the R136 cluster at the center of 30 Dor. The relation between infrared excess (IRX) and UV spectral slope ($\beta_{\rm UV}$) is an empirical probe of dust properties of galaxies. The shape, scatter, and redshift evolution of this relation are not well understood, however, leading to uncertainties in estimating the dust content and star formation rates (SFRs) of galaxies at high redshift. In this study, we explore the nature and properties of the IRX-$\beta_{\rm UV}$ relation with a sample of $z=2-6$ galaxies ($M_*\approx 10^9-10^{12}\,M_\odot$) extracted from high-resolution cosmological simulations (MassiveFIRE) of the Feedback in Realistic Environments (FIRE) project. The galaxies in our sample show an IRX-$\beta_{\rm UV}$ relation that is in good agreement with the observed relation in nearby galaxies. IRX is tightly coupled to the UV optical depth, and is mainly determined by the dust-to-star geometry instead of total dust mass, while $\beta_{\rm UV}$ is set both by stellar properties, UV optical depth, and the dust extinction law. Overall, much of the scatter in the IRX-$\beta_{\rm UV}$ relation of our sample is found to be driven by variations of the intrinsic UV spectral slope. We further assess how the IRX-$\beta_{\rm UV}$ relation depends on viewing direction, dust-to-metal ratio, birth-cloud structures, and the dust extinction law and we present a simple model that encapsulates most of the found dependencies. Consequently, we argue that the reported `deficit' of the infrared/sub-millimetre bright objects at $z>5$ does not necessarily imply a non-standard dust extinction law at those epochs., Comment: 32 pages, 28 figures, 3 tables, submitted to MNRAS (comments are welcomed)

We search for far-infrared (FIR) counterparts of known supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Galactic plane (360° in longitude and $b = \pm \, 1^{\circ }$) at 70–500 μm with Herschel. We detect dust signatures in 39 SNRs out of 190, made up of 13 core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), including 4 Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe), and 2 Type Ia SNe. A further 24 FIR detected SNRs have unknown types. We confirm the FIR detection of ejecta dust within G350.1−0.3, adding to the known sample of ∼ 10 SNRs containing ejecta dust. We discover dust features at the location of a radio core at the centre of G351.2+0.1, indicating FIR emission coincident with a possible Crab-like compact object, with dust temperature and mass of Td = 45.8 K and Md = 0.18 M⊙, similar to the PWN G54.1+0.3. We show that the detection rate is higher among young SNRs. We produce dust temperature maps of 11 SNRs and mass maps of those with distance estimates, finding dust at temperatures $15\, \lesssim \, T_d\, \lesssim \, 40$ K. If the dust is heated by shock interactions the shocked gas must be relatively cool and/or have a low density to explain the observed low grain temperatures.

Context. Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides accurate astrometry for about 1.6 million compact (QSO-like) extragalactic sources, 1.2 million of which have the best-quality five-parameter astrometric solutions., Aims. The proper motions of QSO-like sources are used to reveal a systematic pattern due to the acceleration of the solar systembarycentre with respect to the rest frame of the Universe. Apart from being an important scientific result by itself, the acceleration measured in this way is a good quality indicator of the Gaia astrometric solution., Methods. Theeffect of the acceleration was obtained as a part of the general expansion of the vector field of proper motions in vector spherical harmonics (VSH). Various versions of the VSH fit and various subsets of the sources were tried and compared to get the most consistent result and a realistic estimate of its uncertainty. Additional tests with the Gaia astrometric solution were used to get a better idea of the possible systematic errors in the estimate., Results. Our best estimate of the acceleration based on Gaia EDR3 is (2.32 +/- 0.16) x 10(-10) m s(-2) (or 7.33 +/- 0.51 km s(-1) Myr-1) towards alpha = 269.1 degrees +/- 5.4 degrees, delta = -31.6 degrees +/- 4.1 degrees, corresponding to a proper motion amplitude of 5.05 +/- 0.35 mu as yr(-1). This is in good agreement with the acceleration expected from current models of the Galactic gravitational potential. We expect that future Gaia data releases will provide estimates of the acceleration with uncertainties substantially below 0.1 mu as yr(-1).

We present a study of observed Type II supernova (SN II) colours using optical/near-infrared photometric data from the Carnegie Supernovae Project-I. We analyse four colours (B−V, u−g, g−r, and g−Y) and find that SN II colour curves can be described by two linear regimes during the photospheric phase. The first (s1,colour) is steeper and has a median duration of ∼ 40 days. The second, shallower slope (s2,colour) lasts until the end of the “plateau” (∼ 80 days). The two slopes correlate in the sense that steeper initial colour curves also imply steeper colour curves at later phases. As suggested by recent studies, SNe II form a continuous population of objects from the colour point of view as well. We investigate correlations between the observed colours and a range of photometric and spectroscopic parameters including the absolute magnitude, the V-band light-curve slopes, and metal-line strengths. We find that less luminous SNe II appear redder, a trend that we argue is not driven by uncorrected host-galaxy reddening. While there is significant dispersion, we find evidence that redder SNe II (mainly at early epochs) display stronger metal-line equivalent widths. Host-galaxy reddening does not appear to be a dominant parameter, neither driving observed trends nor dominating the dispersion in observed colours. Intrinsic SN II colours are most probably dominated by photospheric temperature differences, with progenitor metallicity possibly playing a minor role. We fit the rotation curves of isolated dwarf galaxies to directly measure the stellar mass-halo mass relation ($M_*-M_{200}$) over the mass range $5 \times 10^5 < M_{*}/{\rm M}_\odot < 10^{8}$. By accounting for cusp-core transformations due to stellar feedback, we find a monotonic relation with little scatter. Such monotonicity implies that abundance matching should yield a similar $M_*-M_{200}$ if the cosmological model is correct. Using the 'field galaxy' stellar mass function from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the halo mass function from the $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter Bolshoi simulation, we find remarkable agreement between the two. This holds down to $M_{200} \sim 5 \times 10^9$M$_\odot$, and to $M_{200} \sim 5 \times 10^8$M$_\odot$ if we assume a power law extrapolation of the SDSS stellar mass function below $M_* \sim 10^7$M$_\odot$. However, if instead of SDSS we use the stellar mass function of nearby galaxy groups, then the agreement is poor. This occurs because the group stellar mass function is shallower than that of the field below $M_* \sim 10^9$M$_\odot$, recovering the familiar 'missing satellites' and 'too big to fail' problems. Our result demonstrates that both problems are confined to group environments and must, therefore, owe to 'galaxy formation physics' rather than exotic cosmology. Finally, we repeat our analysis for a $\Lambda$ Warm Dark Matter cosmology, finding that it fails at 68% confidence for a thermal relic mass of $m_{\rm WDM} < 1.25$keV, and $m_{\rm WDM} < 2$keV if we use the power law extrapolation of SDSS. Transition type dwarf galaxies are thought to be systems undergoing the process of transformation from a star-forming into a passively evolving dwarf, which makes them particularly suitable to study evolutionary processes driving the existence of different dwarf morphological types. Here we present results from a spectroscopic survey of ~200 individual red giant branch stars in the Phoenix dwarf, the closest transition type with a comparable luminosity to "classical" dwarf galaxies. We measure a systemic heliocentric velocity V = -21.2 km/s. Our survey reveals the clear presence of prolate rotation, which is aligned with the peculiar spatial distribution of the youngest stars in Phoenix. We speculate that both features might have arisen from the same event, possibly an accretion of a smaller system. The evolved stellar population of Phoenix is relatively metal-poor ( = -1.49+/-0.04 dex) and shows a large metallicity spread ($\sigma_{\rm [Fe/H]} = 0.51\pm0.04$\,dex), with a pronounced metallicity gradient of -0.13+/-0.01 dex per arcmin similar to luminous, passive dwarf galaxies. We also report a discovery of an extremely metal-poor star candidate in Phoenix and discuss the importance of correcting for spatial sampling when interpreting the chemical properties of galaxies with metallicity gradients. We produce a set of 72 NIR through UV extinction curves by combining new HST/STIS optical spectrophotometry with existing IUE spectrophotometry (yielding gapless coverage from 1150 to 10000 Angstroms) and NIR photometry. These curves are used to determine a new, internally consistent, NIR through UV Milky Way Mean Curve and to characterize how the shapes of the extinction curves depend on R(V). We emphasize that while this dependence captures much of the curve variability, there remains considerable variation which is independent of R(V). We use the optical spectrophotometry to verify the presence of structure at intermediate wavelength scales in the curves. The fact that the optical through UV portions of the curves are sampled at relatively high resolution makes them very useful for determining how extinction affects different broad band systems, and we provide several examples. We revisit the K -band period-luminosity (P-L) relations of Galactic red supergiants using Gaia Data Release 2 parallaxes and up to 70 yr of photometry from AAVSO and ASAS campaigns. In addition, we examine 206 LMC red supergiants using 50 yr of photometric data from the Digitised Harvard Astronomical Plate Collection. We identified periods by computing power spectra and calculated the period-luminosity relations of our samples and compared them with the literature. Newly available data tighten the P-L relations substantially. Identified periods form two groups: one with periods of 300-1000 days, corresponding to pulsations, and another with Long Secondary Periods between 1000 and 8000 days. Among the 48 Galactic objects we find shorter periods in 25 stars and long secondary periods in 23 stars. In the LMC sample we identify 85 and 94 red supergiants with shorter and long secondary periods, respectively. The P-L relation of the Galactic red supergiants is in agreement with the red supergiants in both, the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Andromeda Galaxy. Context. The precise determinations of stellar mass at $\sim$1% provide important constraints on stellar evolution models. Accurate parallax measurements can also serve as independent benchmarks for the next Gaia data release. Aims. We aim at measuring the masses and distance of binary systems with a precision level better than 1% using a fully geometrical and empirical method. Methods. We obtained the first interferometric observations for the eclipsing systems AI Phe, AL Dor, KW Hya, NN Del, $\psi$ Cen and V4090 Sgr with the VLTI/PIONIER combiner, which we combined with radial velocity measurements to derive their three-dimensional orbit, masses, and distance. Results. We determined very precise stellar masses for all systems, ranging from 0.04% to 3.3 % precision level. We combined these measurements with stellar effective temperature and linear radius to fit stellar isochrones models and determined the age of the systems. We also derived the distance to the systems with a precision level as high as 0.4%. Conclusions. The comparison of theoretical models with stellar parameters shows that stellar models are still deficient in simultaneously fitting the stellar parameters (Teff , R and M) with such level of precision on individual masses. This stresses the importance of precisely measuring the stellar parameters to better calibrate stellar evolution models. The precision of our model-independent orbital parallaxes varies from 24$\mu$as as to 70$\mu$as and they provide a unique opportunity to check on the future Gaia measurements for possible systematic errors., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present a physical characterization of MMJ100026.36+021527.9 (a.k.a. ``MAMBO-9''), a dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) at $z=5.850\pm0.001$. This is the highest redshift unlensed DSFG (and fourth most distant overall) found to-date, and is the first source identified in a new 2mm blank-field map in the COSMOS field. Though identified in prior samples of DSFGs at 850$\mu$m-1.2mm with unknown redshift, the detection at 2mm prompted further follow-up as it indicated a much higher probability that the source was likely to sit at $z>4$. Deep observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter and submillimeter Array (ALMA) presented here confirm the redshift through the secure detection of $^{12}$CO($J\!=$6$\rightarrow$5) and p-H$_{2}$O(2$_{1,1}\!\rightarrow$2$_{0,2}$). MAMBO-9 is comprised of a pair of galaxies separated by 6kpc with corresponding star-formation rates of 590M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ and 220M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ total molecular hydrogen gas mass of (1.7$\pm$0.4)$\times10^{11}$M$_\odot$, dust mass of (1.3$\pm$0.3)$\times10^{9}$M$_\odot$ and stellar mass of (3.2$^{+1.0}_{-1.5}$)$\times10^{9}$M$_\odot$. The total halo mass, (3.3$\pm$0.8)$\times10^{12}$M$_\odot$, is predicted to exceed $>10^{15}$M$_\odot$ by $z=0$. The system is undergoing a merger-driven starburst which will increase the stellar mass of the system tenfold in $\tau_{\rm depl}=40-80$Myr, converting its large molecular gas reservoir (gas fraction of 96$^{+1}_{-2}$%) into stars. MAMBO-9 evaded firm spectroscopic identification for a decade, following a pattern that has emerged for some of the highest redshift DSFGs found. And yet, the systematic identification of unlensed DSFGs like MAMBO-9 is key to measuring the global contribution of obscured star-formation to the star-formation rate density at $z>4$, the formation of the first massive galaxies, and the formation of interstellar dust at early times ($, Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the analysis of the first deep optical observations of three isolated $\gamma$-ray pulsars detected by the {\em Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope}: the radio-loud PSR\, J0248+6021 and PSR\, J0631+1036, and the radio-quiet PSR\, J0633+0632. The latter has also been detected in the X rays. The pulsars are very similar in their spin-down age ($\tau \sim$40--60 kyrs), spin-down energy ($\dot{E} \sim10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$), and dipolar surface magnetic field ($B \sim 3$--$5\times10^{12}$ G). These pulsars are promising targets for multi-wavelength observations, since they have been already detected in $\gamma$ rays and in radio or X-rays. None of them has been detected yet in the optical band. We observed the three pulsar fields in 2014 with the Spanish 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). We could not find any candidate optical counterpart to the three pulsars close to their most recent radio or {\em Chandra} positions down to $3 \sigma$ limits of $g'\sim27.3$, $g'\sim27$, $g'\sim27.3$ for PSR\, J0248+6021, J0631+1036, and J0633+0632, respectively. From the inferred optical upper limits and estimated distance and interstellar extinction, we derived limits on the pulsar optical luminosity. We also searched for the X-ray counterpart to PSR\, J0248+6021 with \chan\ but we did not detect the pulsar down to a 3$\sigma$ flux limit of $5 \times 10^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (0.3--10 keV). For all these pulsars, we compared the optical flux upper limits with the extrapolations in the optical domain of the $\gamma$-ray spectra and compared their multi-wavelength properties with those of other $\gamma$-ray pulsars of comparable age., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an analysis of the final data release of the Carnegie Supernova Project I, focusing on the absolute calibration of the luminosity-decline-rate relation for Type Ia supernovae (SNeIa) using new intrinsic color relations with respect to the color-stretch parameter, $s_{BV}$, enabling improved dust extinction corrections. We investigate to what degree the so-called fast-declining SNeIa can be used to determine accurate extragalactic distances. We estimate the intrinsic scatter in the luminosity-decline-rate relation, and find it ranges from $\pm 0.13$ mag to $\pm 0.18$ mag with no obvious dependence on wavelength. Using the Cepheid variable star data from the SH0ES project (Riess et al., 2016), the SNIa distance scale is calibrated and the Hubble constant is estimated using our optical and near-infrared sample, and these results are compared to those determined exclusively from a near-infrared sub-sample. The systematic effect of the supernova's host galaxy mass is investigated as a function of wavelength and is found to decrease toward redder wavelengths, suggesting this effect may be due to dust properties of the host. Using estimates of the dust extinction derived from optical and NIR wavelengths, and applying these to H band, we derive a Hubble constant $H_0 = 73.2 \pm 2.3$ km/s/Mpc, whereas using a simple $B-V$ color-correction applied to B band yields $H_0 = 72.7 \pm 2.1$ km/s/Mpc. Despite more than 30 years of searches, the compact object in Supernova (SN) 1987A has not yet been detected. We present new limits on the compact object in SN 1987A using millimeter, near-infrared, optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray observations from ALMA, VLT, HST, and Chandra. The limits are approximately 0.1 mJy ($0.1\times 10^{-26}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ Hz$^{-1}$) at 213 GHz, 1 Lsun ($6\times 10^{-29}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ Hz$^{-1}$) in optical if our line-of-sight is free of ejecta dust, and $10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$ ($2\times 10^{-30}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ Hz$^{-1}$) in 2-10 keV X-rays. Our X-ray limits are an order of magnitude less constraining than previous limits because we use a more realistic ejecta absorption model based on three-dimensional neutrino-driven SN explosion models (presented in an accompanying article). The allowed bolometric luminosity of the compact object is 22 Lsun if our line-of-sight is free of ejecta dust, or 138 Lsun if dust-obscured. Depending on assumptions, these values limit the effective temperature of a neutron star to, 35 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ. Clusters or associations of early-type stars are often associated with a 'superbubble' of hot gas. The formation of such superbubbles is caused by the feedback from massive stars. The complex N206 in the Large Magellanic Cloud exhibits a superbubble and a rich massive star population. We observed these massive stars using the FLAMES multi-object spectrograph at ESO-VLT. Available UV spectra from HST, IUE, and FUSE are also used. The spectral analysis is performed with Potsdam Wolf-Rayet (PoWR) model atmospheres. We present the stellar and wind parameters of the OB stars and the two WR binaries in the N206 complex. Twelve percent of the sample show Oe/Be type emission lines, although most of them appear to rotate far below critical. We found eight runaway stars based on their radial velocity. The wind-momentum luminosity relation of our OB sample is consistent with the expectations. The HRD of the OB stars reveals a large age spread (1-30 Myr), suggesting different episodes of star formation in the complex. The youngest stars are concentrated in the inner part of the complex, while the older OB stars are scattered over outer regions. We derived the present day mass function for the entire N206 complex as well as for the cluster NGC2018. Three very massive Of stars are found to dominate the feedback among 164 OB stars in the sample. The two WR winds alone release about as much mechanical luminosity as the whole OB star sample. The cumulative mechanical feedback from all massive stellar winds is comparable to the combined mechanical energy of the supernova explosions that likely occurred in the complex. Accounting also for the WR wind and supernovae, the mechanical input over the last five Myr is ~$2.3\times10^{52}$ erg, which exceeds the current energy content of the complex by more than a factor of five. Supernovae are considered as prime sources of dust in space. Observations of local supernovae over the past couple of decades have detected the presence of dust in supernova ejecta. The reddening of the high redshift quasars also indicate the presence of large masses of dust in early galaxies. Considering the top heavy IMF in the early galaxies, supernovae are assumed to be the major contributor to these large amounts of dust. However, the composition and morphology of dust grains formed in a supernova ejecta is yet to be understood with clarity. Moreover, the dust masses inferred from observations in mid-infrared and submillimeter wavelength regimes differ by two orders of magnitude or more. Therefore, the mechanism responsible for the synthesis of molecules and dust in such environments plays a crucial role in studying the evolution of cosmic dust in galaxies. This review summarises our current knowledge of dust formation in supernova ejecta and tries to quantify the role of supernovae as dust producers in a galaxy.

Aims. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the outstanding quality of the second data release of the Gaia mission and its power for constraining many di erent aspects of the dynamics of the satellites of the Milky Way. We focus here on determining the proper motions of 75 Galactic globular clusters, nine dwarf spheroidal galaxies, one ultra-faint system, and the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Methods. Using data extracted from the Gaia archive, we derived the proper motions and parallaxes for these systems, as well as their uncertainties. We demonstrate that the errors, statistical and systematic, are relatively well understood. We integrated the orbits of these objects in three different Galactic potentials, and characterised their properties. We present the derived proper motions, space velocities, and characteristic orbital parameters in various tables to facilitate their use by the astronomical community. Results. Our limited and straightforward analyses have allowed us for example to (i) determine absolute and very precise proper motions for globular clusters; (ii) detect clear rotation signatures in the proper motions of at least five globular clusters; (iii) show that the satellites of the MilkyWay are all on high-inclination orbits, but that they do not share a single plane of motion; (iv) derive a lower limit for the mass of the Milky Way of 9:8$^{+6:7}_{2:7}$ x 10$6{11}$$\odot$ based on the assumption that the Leo I dwarf spheroidal is bound; (v) derive a rotation curve for the Large Magellanic Cloud based solely on proper motions that is competitive with line-of-sight velocity curves, now using many orders of magnitude more sources; and (vi) unveil the dynamical effect of the bar on the motions of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Conclusions. All these results highlight the incredible power of the Gaia astrometric mission, and in particular of its second data release., Includes STFC and ERC.

We present the analysis of four first overtone RR Lyrae stars observed with the Kepler space telescope, based on data obtained over nearly 2.5yr. All four stars are found to be multiperiodic. The strongest secondary mode with frequency f_2 has an amplitude of a few mmag, 20 - 45 times lower than the main radial mode with frequency f_1. The two oscillations have a period ratio of P_2/P_1 = 0.612 - 0.632 that cannot be reproduced by any two radial modes. Thus, the secondary mode is nonradial. Modes yielding similar period ratios have also recently been discovered in other variables of the RRc and RRd types. These objects form a homogenous group and constitute a new class of multimode RR Lyrae pulsators, analogous to a similar class of multimode classical Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds. Because a secondary mode with P_2/P_1 ~ 0.61 is found in almost every RRc and RRd star observed from space, this form of multiperiodicity must be common. In all four Kepler RRc stars studied, we find subharmonics of f_2 at ~1/2 f_2 and at ~3/2 f_2. This is a signature of period doubling of the secondary oscillation, and is the first detection of period doubling in RRc stars. The amplitudes and phases of f_2 and its subharmonics are variable on a timescale of 10 - 200d. The dominant radial mode also shows variations on the same timescale, but with much smaller amplitude. In three Kepler RRc stars we detect additional periodicities, with amplitudes below 1mmag, that must correspond to nonradial g-modes. A sample of 33 eclipsing binaries observed in a field of the SMC with FLAMES@VLT is presented. The radial velocity curves obtained, together with existing OGLE light curves, allowed the determination of all stellar and orbital parameters of these binary systems. The mean distance modulus of the observed part of the SMC is 19.05, based on the 26 most reliable systems. Assuming an average error of 0.1 mag on the distance modulus to an individual system, and a gaussian distribution of the distance moduli, we obtain a 2-sigma depth of 0.36 mag or 10.6 kpc. We use integrated-light spectroscopic observations to measure metallicities and chemical abundances for two extragalactic young massive star clusters (NGC1313-379 and NGC1705-1). The spectra were obtained with the X-Shooter spectrograph on the ESO Very Large Telescope. We compute synthetic integrated-light spectra, based on colour-magnitude diagrams for the brightest stars in the clusters from Hubble Space Telescope photometry and theoretical isochrones. Furthermore, we test the uncertainties arising from the use of Colour Magnitude Diagram (CMD) +Isochrone method compared to an Isochrone-Only method. The abundances of the model spectra are iteratively adjusted until the best fit to the observations is obtained. In this work we mainly focus on the optical part of the spectra. We find metallicities of [Fe/H] = $-$0.84 $\pm$ 0.07 and [Fe/H] = $-$0.78 $\pm$ 0.10 for NGC1313-379 and NGC1705-1, respectively. We measure [$\alpha$/Fe]=$+$0.06 $\pm$ 0.11 for NGC1313-379 and a super-solar [$\alpha$/Fe]=$+$0.32 $\pm$ 0.12 for NGC1705-1. The roughly solar [$\alpha$/Fe] ratio in NGC1313-379 resembles those for young stellar populations in the Milky Way (MW) and the Magellanic Clouds, whereas the enhanced [$\alpha$/Fe] ratio in NGC1705-1 is similar to that found for the cluster NGC1569-B by previous studies. Such super-solar [$\alpha$/Fe] ratios are also predicted by chemical evolution models that incorporate the bursty star formation histories of these dwarf galaxies. Furthermore, our $\alpha$-element abundances agree with abundance measurements from H II regions in both galaxies. In general we derive Fe-peak abundances similar to those observed in the MW and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) for both young massive clusters.
