Search

The absence of global magnetic fields is often cited to explain why Mars lacks a dense atmosphere. This line of thought is based on a prevailing theory that magnetic fields can shield the atmosphere from solar wind erosion. However, we present observations here to demonstrate a counterintuitive understanding: unlike the global intrinsic magnetic field, the remnant crustal magnetic fields can enhance atmosphere loss when considering loss induced by plasma wave-particle interactions. An analysis of MAVEN data, combined with observation-based simulations, reveals that the bulk of O+ ions would be in resonance with ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves when the latter were present. This interaction then results in significant particle energization, thus enhancing ion escaping. A more detailed analysis attributes the occurrence of the resonance to the presence of Mars' crustal magnetic fields, which cause the majority of nearby ions to gyrate at a frequency matching the resonant condition ({\omega}-k_{\parallel} v_{\parallel}={\Omega}_i) of the waves. The ULF waves, fundamental drivers of this entire process, are excited and propelled by the upstream solar wind. We describe the planned near-term and potential longer-term upgrades of the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider operating at the KEK laboratory in Tsukuba, Japan. We have developed a hybrid code GMEC: Gyro-kinetic Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) Energetic-particle Code that can numerically simulate energetic particle-driven Alfv\'en eigenmodes and energetic particle transport in tokamak plasmas. In order to resolve the Alfv\'en eigenmodes with high toroidal numbers effectively, the field-aligned coordinates and meshes are adopted. The extended MHD equations are solved with five-points finite difference method and fourth order Runge-Kutta method. The gyrokinetic equations are solved by particle-in-cell (PIC) method for the perturbed energetic particle pressures that are coupled into the MHD equations. Up to now, a simplified version of the hybrid code has been completed with several successful verifications including linear simulations of toroidal Alfv\'en eigenmodes and reversed shear Alfv\'en eigenmodes., Comment: 11 pages, 17 figures

A machine learning based surrogate model for fishbone linear instability in tokamaks is constructed. Hybrid simulations with the kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code M3D-K is used to generate the database of fishbone linear instability, through scanning the four key parameters which are thought to determine the fishbone physics. The four key parameters include (1) central total beta of both thermal plasma and fast ions, (2) the fast ion pressure fraction, (3) central value of safety factor $q$ and (4) the radius of $q=1$ surface. Four machine learning methods including linear regression, support vector machines (SVM) with linear kernel, SVM with nonlinear kernel and multi-layer perceptron are used to predict the fishbone instability, growth rate and real frequency, mode structure respectively. Among the four methods, SVM with nonlinear kernel performs very well to predict the linear instability with accuracy $\approx$95%, growth rate and real frequency with $R^2\approx$98%, mode structure with $R^2\approx$98%., Comment: 28 pages,19 figures

A new magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code based on initial value approach, GMEC_I, has been developed for simulating various MHD physics in tokamak plasmas, as the MHD foundation of the gyrokinetic-MHD energetic particle simulation code (GMEC) family. GMEC_I solves multi-level reduced-MHD models that form a hierarchy of physics complexity, which provide conveniences for the cross-code verification and the identification of key physics effect in tokamak geometry. The field-aligned coordinates are used to represent mode structure efficiently. High-order finite difference methods are used for spatial discretization. The shifted metric methods are used for numerical stability. The discrete expansion forms of physics equations in the code are generated symbolically using the compile-time symbolic solver (CSS), which is specifically developed to reduce the complexity of the high-order finite difference form of the MHD equations. Advanced computational techniques have been implemented for optimizing memory access and code parallelization that show a good efficiency using both Thread Building Block (TBB) and Message Passing Interface (MPI). Benchmarks between GMEC_I and the eigenvalue code MAS are presented for ballooning modes without and with diamagnetic drift effects, and tearing modes, which show excellent agreements., Comment: 17 pages, 38 figures

The recent report of pressure-induced structure transition and signature of superconductivity with Tc = 80 K above 14 GPa in the La3Ni2O7 crystals has garnered considerable attention. To further elaborate this discovery, we carried out comprehensive resistance measurements on the La3Ni2O7 crystals grown with the optical-image floating zone furnace under oxygen pressure (15 bar) by using the diamond anvil cell (DAC) and cubic anvil cell (CAC), which employs the solid and liquid pressure transmitting medium, respectively. For the sample #1 measured in DAC, it exhibits a semiconducting-like behavior with large resistance at low pressures and becomes metallic gradually upon compression. At the pressures P >= 13.7 GPa, we observed the appearance of resistance drop as large as ~50% around 70 K, which evolves into a kink-like anomaly at pressures above 40 GPa and shifts to lower temperatures gradually with increasing magnetic field. These observations are consistent with the recent report mentioned above. On the other hand, the sample #2 measured in CAC retains the metallic behavior in the investigated pressure range up to 15 GPa. The hump-like anomaly in resistance around ~130 K at ambient pressure disappears at P >= 2 GPa. In the pressure range from 11 to 15 GPa, we observed the gradual development of a shoulder-like anomaly in resistance at low temperatures, which evolves into a pronounced drop of resistance by 98% below 62 K at 15 GPa, reaching a temperature-independent resistance of 20 uOhm below 20 K. Similarly, this resistance anomaly can be shifted to lower temperatures progressively by applying external magnetic fields, resembling a typical superconducting transition., Comment: 4 Figures

As an A-site-vacant perovskite-type oxide, ReO3 undergoes sequential pressure-driven structural transitions associated with the rotation of ReO6 octahedra. The rhombohedral-I phase stable in the pressure range of 12-38 GPa is featured by a lattice of nearly close-packed oxygen layers intercalated with Re cations, in reminiscent of the recently discovered superhydride superconductors. A combined study of first-principles calculations and transport measurements under high pressures enabled us to discover superconductivity in the rhombohedral-I phase showing a dome-shaped Tc(P) with a maximum Tc of 17 K at about 30 GPa. In addition to the enhanced density of states at the Fermi level compared to that of the ambient phase, the low-frequency vibrations of hexagonal-close-packed oxygen lattice significantly strengthen the electron-phonon coupling, which is responsible for observed superconductivity with a relatively high Tc. The present work thus establishes a rare case among oxide superconductors that the light-element oxygen lattice plays a crucial role in inducing superconductivity., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

The Super $\tau$-Charm facility (STCF) is an electron-positron collider proposed by the Chinese particle physics community. It is designed to operate in a center-of-mass energy range from 2 to 7 GeV with a peak luminosity of $0.5\times 10^{35}{\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$ or higher. The STCF will produce a data sample about a factor of 100 larger than that by the present $\tau$-Charm factory -- the BEPCII, providing a unique platform for exploring the asymmetry of matter-antimatter (charge-parity violation), in-depth studies of the internal structure of hadrons and the nature of non-perturbative strong interactions, as well as searching for exotic hadrons and physics beyond the Standard Model. The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This document presents the physics opportunities at the STCF, describes conceptual designs of the STCF detector system, and discusses future plans for detector R\&D and physics case studies.

The nuclear reactions in a plasma system with energy distribution deviated from Maxwellian are proved to have some unique characteristics including those in their product energy spectrum. Based on this, a new nuclear diagnostic scheme for measuring the nonthermal ion energy spectrum in high-energy-density plasmas is proposed, where the effective temperature and spectral peak of the nonthermal ion energy spectrum are uniquely determined by the spectral width and spectral peak of the product energy spectrum. Then, taking the laser-driven magnetic reconnection experiment as an example, according to the particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation results coupled with the proton-boron (pB) fusion reaction, the pB reaction rate is increased by 4 orders of magnitude; meanwhile, the product spectral peak and spectral width are shifted towards higher energy, deviating from the predictions of the thermal equilibrium assumption, both of which are on account of the accelerated and heated suprathermal protons in magnetic reconnection. Furthermore, analyzing a series of simulation results, the new product spectrum analysis approach suitable for the parameter range of laser-driven magnetic reconnection is found., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

We present a systematic study of the structure, electronic, and magnetic properties of a new branch of intermetalllic compounds, $R$V$_6$Sn$_6$ ($R$ = Tb - Tm) by using X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, electrical transport, and heat-capacity measurements. These compounds feature a combination of a non-magnetic vanadium kagome sublattice and a magnetic rare-earth triangular sublattice that supports various spin anisotropies based on different $R$ ions. We find magnetic orders for the $R$ = Tb, Dy, and Ho compounds at 4.4, 3, 2.5 K, respectively, while no ordering is detected down to 0.4 K for the $R$ = Er and Tm compounds with easy-plane anisotropies. Electronically, we found no superconductivity or charge ordering transition down to 0.4 K for any member of this family, while all compounds exhibit multi-band transport properties that originate from the band topology of the vanadium kagome sublattice., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

The conventional ion temperature gradient or \eta_i mode is known to propagate in the ion diamagnetic direction. Investigation of a generic drift fluid model with warm ions and adiabatic electrons, reveals that as \eta_i decreases, the propagation characteristics of the unstable mode may change drastically, the mode frequency first decreases in magnitude, and reaches zero for a critical \eta_i. But as \eta_i goes down further, the mode begins to propagate in the electron diamagnetic direction. The lower toroidal mode number perturbations are more prone to reversal in propagation direction. Even for \eta_i=0, the mode remains unstable, drawing free energy form the density gradients. Since finite ion temperature appears to be essential for propagation in the electron direction, it is appropriate to introduce new terminology and call this wave the warm ion electron drift (WIED) mode. The model drift wave system is explored within the framework of the two dimensional (2D) weakly asymmetric ballooning theory (WABT) for local eigenmode satisfying natural boundary conditions. The physics behind the excitation of the eigenmode crossing zero frequency is identified to be the reactive instability induced by the curvature coupling between the positive energy wave and the negative energy wave, a damped mode in electron direction coupled to a growing mode in the ion direction in non-dissipative slab limit. Apart from its intrinsic scientific value, this mechanism may shed some light onto the nature of tokamak edge turbulence observed in frequencies moderately lower than the electron diamagnetic frequency; understanding this phenomenon could be helpful in conceptual design around the edge region of future tokamak.

The advances in the field of unconventional superconductivity are largely driven by the discovery of novel superconducting systems. Here we report on the discovery of superconductivity on the border of antiferromagnetic order in a quasi-one-dimensional RbMn6Bi5 via measurements of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility under high pressures. With increasing pressure, its antiferromagnetic transition with TN = 83 K at ambient pressure is first enhanced moderately and then suppressed completely at a critical pressure of Pc = 13 GPa, around which bulk superconductivity emerges and exhibits a dome-like Tc(P) with a maximal Tc_onset = 9.5 K at about 15 GPa. Its temperature-pressure phase diagram resembles those of many magnetism-mediated superconducting systems. In addition, the superconducting state around Pc is characterized by a large upper critical field {\mu}0Hc2(0) exceeding the Pauli limit, elaborating a possible unconventional paring mechanism. The present study, together with our recent work on KMn6Bi5 (Tcmax = 9.3 K), makes AMn6Bi5 (A= Alkali metal) a new family of Mn-based superconductors with relatively high Tc.

The Mn-based superconductor is rare owing to the strong magnetic pair-breaking effect. Here we report on the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in KMn6Bi5, which becomes the first ternary Mn-based superconductor. At ambient pressure, the quasi-one-dimensional KMn6Bi5 is an antiferromagnetic metal with TN = 75 K. By measuring resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility under hydrostatic pressures up to 14.2 GPa in a cubic anvil cell apparatus, we find that its antiferromagnetic transition can be suppressed completely at a critical pressure of Pc = 13 GPa, around which bulk superconductivity emerges and displays a superconducting dome with the maximal Tconset = 9.3 K achieved at about 14.2 GPa. The close proximity of superconductivity to a magnetic instability in the temperature-pressure phase diagram of KMn6Bi5 and an unusually large {\mu}0Hc2(0) = 18.9 T exceeding the Pauli limit suggests an unconventional magnetism-mediated paring mechanism. In contrast to the binary MnP, the flexibility of the crystal structure and chemical compositions in the ternary AMn6Bi5 (A = alkali metal) can open a new avenue for finding more Mn-based superconductors., Comment: 4 figures

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are highly dispersed millisecond-duration radio bursts. Recent observations of a Galactic FRB suggest that at least some FRBs originate from magnetars, but the origin of cosmological FRBs is still not settled. Here we report the detection of 1863 bursts in 82 hr over 54 days from the repeating source FRB~20201124A. These observations show irregular short-time variation of the Faraday rotation measure (RM), which probes the density-weighted line-of-sight magnetic field strength, of individual bursts during the first 36 days, followed by a constant RM. We detected circular polarisation in more than half of the burst sample, including one burst reaching a high fractional circular polarisation of 75%. Oscillations in fractional linear and circular polarisations as well as polarisation angle as a function of wavelength were detected. All of these features provide evidence for a complicated, dynamically evolving, magnetised immediate environment within about an astronomical unit (au; Earth-Sun distance) of the source. Our optical observations of its Milky-Way-sized, metal-rich host galaxy reveal a barred spiral, with the FRB source residing in a low stellar density, interarm region at an intermediate galactocentric distance. This environment is inconsistent with a young magnetar engine formed during an extreme explosion of a massive star that resulted in a long gamma-ray burst or superluminous supernova., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, updated to match the published version

HfTe3 single crystal undergoes a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition at TCDW = 93 K without the appearance of superconductivity (SC) down to 50 mK at ambient pressure. Here, we determined its CDW vector q = 0.91(1) a* + 0.27(1) c* via low-temperature transimission electron microscope and then performed comprehensive high-pressure transport measurements along three major crystallographic axes. Our results indicate that the superconducting pairing starts to occur within the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) -Te2-Te3- chain at 4-5 K but the phase coherence between the superconducting chains cannot be realized along either the b- or c-axis down to at least 1.4 K, giving rise to an extremely anisotropic SC rarely seen in real materials. We have discussed the prominent Q1D SC in pressurized HfTe3 in terms of the anisotropic Fermi surfaces arising from the unidirectional Te-5px electronic states and the local pairs formed along the -Te2-Te3- chains based on the first-principles electronic structure calculations.

Impurity pinning has long been discussed to have a profound effect on the dynamics of an incommensurate charge density wave (CDW), which would otherwise slide through the lattice without resistance. Here we visualize the impurity pinning evolution of the CDW in ZrTe3 using the variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). At low temperatures, we observe a quasi-1D incommensurate CDW modulation moderately correlated to the impurity positions, indicating a weak impurity pinning. As we raise the sample temperature, the CDW modulation gets progressively weakened and distorted, while the correlation with the impurities becomes stronger. Above the CDW transition temperature, short-range modulations persist with the phase almost all pinned by impurities. The evolution from weak to strong impurity pinning through the CDW transition can be understood as a result of losing phase rigidity.

In this paper, we investigate the impact of correlated noise on fast radio burst (FRB) searching. We found that 1) the correlated noise significantly increases the false alarm probability; 2) the signal-to-noise ratios (S/N) of the false positives become higher; 3) the correlated noise also affects the pulse width distribution of false positives, and there will be more false positives with wider pulse width. We use 55-hour observation for M82 galaxy carried out at Nanshan 26m radio telescope to demonstrate the application of the correlated noise modelling. The number of candidates and parameter distribution of the false positives can be reproduced with the modelling of correlated noise. We will also discuss a low S/N candidate detected in the observation, for which we demonstrate the method to evaluate the false alarm probability in the presence of correlated noise.Possible origins of the candidate are discussed, where two possible pictures, an M82-harbored giant pulse and a cosmological FRB, are both compatible with the observation., Comment: Aceepted for publication in MNRAS. 10 pages, 9 figures

Exploration of superconductivity in light element compounds has drawn considerable attention because those materials can easily realize the high $T_{c}$ superconductivity, such as ${\mathrm{LnNi}}_{2}{\mathrm{B}_{2}}{\mathrm{C}}$ ($T_{c}$ =17 K), ${\mathrm{Mg}}{\mathrm{B}}_{2}$ ($T_{c}$ =39 K), and very recently super-hydrides under pressure ($T_{c}$ =250 K). Here we report the discovery of bulk superconductivity at 7.8 K in scandium borocarbide ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{20}{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}_{27}$ with a tetragonal lattice which structure changes based on the compound of ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{3}{\mathrm{C}}_{4}$ with very little B doping. Magnetization and specific heat measurements show bulk superconductivity. An upper critical field of Hc2(0) ~ 8 T is determined. Low temperature specific-heat shows that this system is a BCS fully gapped s-wave superconductor. Electronic structure calculations demonstrate that compared with ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{3}{\mathrm{C}}_{4}$ there are more orbital overlap and hybridization between Sc 3d electrons and 2p electrons of C-C(B)-C fragment in ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{20}{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}_{27}$, which form a new electric conduction path of Sc-C(B)-Sc. Those changes influence the band structure at the Fermi level and may be the reason of superconductivity in ${\mathrm{Sc}}_{20}{\mathrm{B}}{\mathrm{C}}_{27}$., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Various tin hydrides SnHx (x = 4, 8, 12, 14) have been theoretically predicted to be stable at high pressures and to show high-critical-temperature superconductivity with Tc ranging from about 70 to 100 K. However, experimental verifications for any of these phases are still lacking to date. Here, we report on the in-situ synthesis, electrical resistance, and synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements of SnHx at ~ 200 GPa. The main phase of the obtained sample can be indexed with the monoclinic C2/m SnH12 via comparison with the theoretical structural modes. A sudden drop of resistance and the systematic downward shift under external magnetic fields signals the occurrence of superconductivity in SnHx at Tc = ~ 70 K with an upper critical field u0Hc2(0) = ~ 11.2 T, which is relatively low in comparison with other reported high-Tc superhydrides. Various characteristic superconducting parameters are estimated based on the BCS theory.

There are two distinct phases in the evolution of drift wave envelope in the presence of zonal flow. A long-lived standing wave phase, which we call the Caviton, and a short-lived traveling wave phase (in radial direction) we call the Instanton. For drift wave turbulence driven by ion temperature gradient mode (ITG), these two stages of dynamics were displayed in [Zhang Y Z, Liu Z Y, Xie T, Mahajan S M and Liu J 2017 Physics of Plasmas 24 122304]. In this paper we show that the dynamical attributes of ITG turbulence are readily replicated when the turbulence rotates in the electron direction; our model calculation deals specifically with the toroidal electron drift waves (EDW) in the well-known \delta_e model. While the basic calculations are presented in parallel to the ITG counterpart, more emphasis is laid here on the motion of Instanton; several abrupt phenomena observed in tokamaks, such as intermittent excitation of geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) shown in this paper, could be attributed to the sudden and fast radial motion of Instanton. The calculation brings out the defining characteristics of the Instanton: it begins as a linear traveling wave right after the transition. Then, it evolves to a nonlinear stage with increasing frequency all the way to 20 kHz. The modulation to Reynolds stress in zonal flow equation will cause resonant excitation to GAM. The intermittency is shown due to the random phase mixing between multiple central rational surfaces in the reaction region., Comment: 54 pages, 19 figures

We have used the Nanshan 25-m Radio Telescope at Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory to obtain timing observations of 87 pulsars from 2002 July to 2014 March. Using the "Cholesky" timing analysis method we have determined positions and proper motions for 48 pulsars, 24 of which are improved positions compared to previously published values. We also present the first published proper motions for nine pulsars and improved proper motions for 21 pulsars using pulsar timing and position comparison method. The pulsar rotation parameters are derived and are more accurate than previously published values for 36 pulsars. Glitches are detected in three pulsars: PSRs J1722$-$3632, J1852$-$0635 and J1957+2831. For the first two, the glitches are large, with $\Delta\nu_g/\nu > 10^{-6}$, and they are the first detected glitches in these pulsars. PSR J1722$-$3632 is the second oldest pulsar with large glitch. For the middle-age pulsars ($\tau_c > 10^5$~yr), the calculated braking indices, $|n|$, are strongly correlated with $\tau_c$ and the numbers of positive and negative values of $n$ are almost equal. For young pulsars ($\tau_c < 10^5$~yr), there is no correlation between $|n|$ and $\tau_c$ and most have $n>0$., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication by ApJ

Glitches correspond to sudden jumps of rotation frequency ($\nu$) and its derivative ($\dot{\nu}$) of pulsars, the origin of which remains not well understood yet, partly because the jump processes of most glitches are not well time-resolved. There are three large glitches of the Crab pulsar, detected in 1989, 1996 and 2017, which were found to have delayed spin-up processes before the normal recovery processes. Here we report two additional glitches of the Crab pulsar occurred in 2004 and 2011 for which we discovered delayed spin up processes, and present refined parameters of the largest glitch occurred in 2017. The initial rising time of the glitch is determined as $<0.48$ hour. We also carried out a statistical study of these five glitches with observed spin-up processes. The two glitches occurred in 2004 and 2011 have delayed spin-up time scales ($\tau_{1}$) of $1.7\pm0.8$\,days and $1.6\pm0.4$\,days, respectively. We find that the $\Delta{\nu}$ vs. $|\Delta{\dot\nu}|$ relation of these five glitches is similar to those with no detected delayed spin-up process, indicating that they are similar to the others in nature except that they have larger amplitudes. For these five glitches, the amplitudes of the delayed spin-up process ($|\Delta{\nu}_{\rm d1}|$) and recovery process ($\Delta{\nu}_{\rm d2}$), their time scales ($\tau_{1}$, $\tau_{2}$), and permanent changes in spin frequency ($\Delta{\nu}_{\rm p}$) and total frequency step ($\Delta{\nu}_{\rm g}$) have positive correlations. From these correlations, we suggest that the delayed spin-up processes are common for all glitches, but are too short and thus difficult to be detected for most glitches., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures

A reproducible stationary improved confinement mode (I-mode) has been achieved recently in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, featuring good confinement without particle transport barrier, which could be beneficial to solving the heat flux problem caused by edge localized modes (ELM) and the helium ash problem for future fusion reactors. The microscopic mechanism of sustaining stationary I-mode, based on the coupling between turbulence transition and the edge temperature oscillation, has been discovered for the first time. A radially localized edge temperature ring oscillation (ETRO) with azimuthally symmetric structure ($n=0$,$m=0$) has been identified and it is caused by alternative turbulence transitions between ion temperature gradient modes (ITG) and trapped electron modes (TEM). The ITG-TEM transition is controlled by local electron temperature gradient and consistent with the gyrokinetic simulations. The self-organizing system consisting with ETRO, turbulence and transport transitions plays the key role in sustaining the I-mode confinement. These results provide a novel physics basis for accessing, maintaining and controlling stationary I-mode in the future., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We present our piggyback search for fast radio bursts using the Nanshan 26m Radio Telescope and the Kunming 40m Radio Telescope. The observations are performed in the L-band from 1380 MHz to 1700 MHz at Nanshan and S-band from 2170 MHz to 2310 MHz at Kunming. We built the \textsc{Roach2}-based FFT spectrometer and developed the real-time transient search software. We introduce a new radio interference mitigation technique named \emph{zero-DM matched filter} and give the formula of the signal-to-noise ratio loss in the transient search. Though we have no positive detection of bursts in about 1600 and 2400 hours data at Nanshan and Kunming respectively, an intriguing peryton was detected at Nanshan, from which hundreds of bursts were recorded. Perytons are terrestrial radio signals that mimic celestial fast radio bursts. They were first reported at Parkes and identified as microwave oven interferences later. The bursts detected at Nanshan show similar frequency swept emission and have double-peaked profiles. They appeared in different sky regions in about tens of minutes observations and the dispersion measure index is not exactly 2, which indicates the terrestrial origin. The peryton differs drastically from the known perytons detected at Parkes, because it appeared in a precise period of $p=1.71287\pm 0.00004$ s. Critical phenomenon at the phase transition reveals the universal and long-distance properties of the criticality. We study the ferromagnetic criticality of the pyrochlore magnet Lu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ at the ferromagnetic transition ${T_\text{c}\approx 70\, \text{K}}$ from the isotherms of magnetization $M(H)$ via an iteration process and the Kouvel-Fisher method. The critical exponents associated with the transition are determined as ${\beta = 0.32(1)}$, ${\gamma = 1.41(1)}$, and ${\delta = 5.38}$. The validity of these critical exponents is further verified by scaling all the $M(H)$ data in the vicinity of $T_\text{c}$ onto two universal curves in the plot of $M/|\varepsilon|^\beta$ versus $H/|\varepsilon|^{\beta+\gamma}$, where ${\varepsilon = T/T_\text{c} -1}$. The obtained $\beta$ and $\gamma$ values show asymmetric behaviors on the ${T < T_\text{c}}$ and the ${T > T_\text{c}}$ sides, and are consistent with the predicted values of 3D Ising and cubic universality classes, respectively. This makes Lu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ a rare example in which the critical behaviors associated with a ferromagnetic transition belong to different universality classes. By analyzing large quantities of discharges in the unfavorable ion $ \vec B\times \nabla B $ drift direction, the I-mode operation has been confirmed in EAST tokamak. During the L-mode to I-mode transition, the energy confinement has a prominent improvement by the formation of a high-temperature edge pedestal, while the particle confinement remains almost identical to that in the L-mode. Similar with the I-mode observation on other devices, the $ E_r $ profiles obtained by the eight-channel Doppler backscattering system (DBS8)\cite{J.Q.Hu} show a deeper edge $ E_r $ well in the I-mode than that in the L-mode. And a weak coherent mode (WCM) with the frequency range of 40-150 kHz is observed at the edge plasma with the radial extend of about 2-3 cm. WCM could be observed in both density fluctuation and radial electric field fluctuation, and the bicoherence analyses showed significant couplings between WCM and high frequency turbulence, implying that the $ E_r $ fluctuation and the caused flow shear from WCM should play an important role during I-mode. In addition, a low-frequency oscillation with a frequency range of 5-10 kHz is always accompanied with WCM, where GAM intensity is decreased or disappeared. Many evidences show that the a low-frequency oscillation may be a novel kind of limited cycle oscillation but further investigations are needed to explain the new properties such as the harmonics and obvious magnetical perturbations., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Recently, a novel material with bilayer kagome lattice Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$ was proposed to be a gapless quantum spin liquid, due to the lack of long-range magnetic order and the observation of broad diffuse excitations. Here, we present the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on single crystals of Ca$_{10}$Cr$_7$O$_{28}$ to detect its low-lying magnetic excitations. At finite temperatures, with increasing the magnetic fields, the thermal conductivity exhibits a clear dip around 6 T, which may correspond to a crossover in the magnetic ground state. At the zero-temperature limit, no residual linear term is found at any fields, indicating the absence of gapless itinerant fermionic excitations. Therefore, if the spinons do exist, they are either localized or gapped. In the gapped case, the fitting of our data gives a small gap $\Delta \sim$ 0.27(2) K. We report detailed investigation of nulling and drifting behavior of two pulsars PSRs J1741-0840 and J1840-0840 observed from the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope at 625 MHz. PSR J1741-840 was found to show nulling fraction (NF) of around 30(5)% while PSR J1840-0840 was shown to have NF of around 50(6)%. We measured drifting behavior from different profile components in PSR J1840-0840 for the first time with the leading component showing drifting with 13.5(0.7) periods while the weak trailing component showed drifting of around 18(1) periods. Large nulling do hamper accuracy of these quantities derived using standard Fourier techniques. A more accurate comparison was drawn from driftband slopes, measured after sub-pulse modeling. These measurements revealed interesting sporadic and irregular drifting behavior in both pulsars. We conclude that the previously reported different drifting periodicities in the trailing component of PSR J1741-0840 is likely due to the spread in these driftband slopes. We also find that both components of PSR J1840-0840 show similar driftband slopes within the uncertainties. Unique nulling-drifting interaction is identified in PSR J1840-0840 where, in most occasions, the pulsar tends to start nulling after what appears to be an end of a driftband. Similarly, when the pulsar switches back to an emission phase, in most occasions it starts at the beginning of a new driftband in both components. Such behaviors have not been detected in any other pulsars to our knowledge. We also found that PSR J1741-0840 seems to have no memory of its previous burst phase while PSR J1840-0840 clearly exhibits memory of its previous state even after longer nulls for both components. In the tensor-network framework, the expectation values of two-dimensional quantum states are evaluated by contracting a double-layer tensor network constructed from initial and final tensor-network states. The computational cost of carrying out this contraction is generally very high, which limits the largest bond dimension of tensor-network states that can be accurately studied to a relatively small value. We propose an optimized contraction scheme to solve this problem by mapping the double-layer tensor network onto an intersected single-layer tensor network. This reduces greatly the bond dimensions of local tensors to be contracted and improves dramatically the efficiency and accuracy of the evaluation of expectation values of tensor-network states. It almost doubles the largest bond dimension of tensor-network states whose physical properties can be efficiently and reliably calculated, and it extends significantly the application scope of tensor-network methods., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted version for Phys. Pulse arrival time measurements over fourteen years with the Nanshan 25-m and Parkes 64-m radio telescopes have been used to determine the average profile and timing properties for PSR J1757$-$2421 (B1754$-$24). Analysis of the radio profile data shows a large variation of spectral index across the profile and an unusual increase in component separation with increasing frequency. The timing observations show that PSR B1754$-$24 underwent a large glitch with a fractional increase in spin frequency of $\Delta\nu_{\rm g}/\nu\sim 7.8\times10^{-6}$ in May 2011. At the time of the glitch there was a large permanent jump in the rotational frequency accompanied by two exponential recovery terms with timescales of 15(6) and 97(15) days, respectively., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Frustrated quantum magnetism has moved to the forefront of physics research, posing fundamental questions concerning quantum disordered states, entanglement, topology and the nature of the quantum wavefunction. The defining problem in the field is one of the simplest, the ground state of the nearest-neighbour $S = 1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice, but has defied all theoretical and numerical methods employed to date. We apply the formalism of tensor-network states (TNS), specifically the method of projected entangled simplex states (PESS), whose combination of a correct accounting for multipartite entanglement and infinite system size provides qualitatively new insight. By studying the ground-state energy, the staggered magnetization we find at all finite tensor bond dimensions and the effects of a second-neighbour coupling, we demonstrate that the ground state is a gapless spin liquid. This paper reports on polarimetric radiation properties based on the switching modes of normal PSR B2020+28 by analysing the data acquired from the Nanshan 25-m radio telescope at 1556 MHz. With nearly 8 hours quasi-continuous observation, the data presented some striking and updated phenomena. The change of relative intensity between the leading and trailing components is the predominant feature of mode switching. The intensity ratio between the leading and trailing components are measured for the individual profiles averaged over 30 seconds. It is found that there is an excess of high ratios over the normal distribution, which indicates that two modes exist in the pulsar. The distribution of abnormal mode has a narrower width indicating that the abnormal mode is more stable than the normal mode. A total of 76 mode switching events are detected in our data. It spends 89\% in the normal mode and 11\% in the abnormal mode. The intrinsic distributions of mode timescales are constrained with power-law distributions. The significant difference in the index of the duration distribution between normal and abnormal modes possibly indicates that the timescale for the abnormal mode to get stable is shorter than that for the normal mode. The frequent switching between both modes may indicate that the oscillations between different magnetospheric states are rapid.

We study the charge dynamics of the half-filled Hubbard model on the square lattice at zero temperature. We employ a slave-fermion formulation in which the charge degrees of freedom are represented by fermionic holons and doublons and the bosonic spin degrees of freedom are assumed to be described by the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. The ground state has long-ranged magnetic (N\'eel) order and its Mott-insulating characteristics are the consequence of holon-doublon bound-state formation. Within this framework, we calculate the average double occupancy, the electron density of states, and the spectral function in the self-consistent Born approximation. The lower and upper Hubbard bands are reproduced, there is spectral-weight transfer into a coherent quasiparticle band at their lower edges, and the Mott gap, associated with holon-doublon binding, is renormalized due to the interactions of the holons and doublons with the magnons. We compute the zeros of the Green function at the chemical potential to discuss the Luttinger volume and show that the poles of the self-energy reflect the underlying quasiparticle dispersion with a spin-renormalized hopping parameter. Optical conductivity results relate the optical gap to the Mott gap of the insulating system. We conclude that a self-consistent treatment of the spin fluctuation effects on the charge degrees of freedom captures all the essential physics of the antiferromagnetic Mott-Hubbard insulator.
