Quantum coherence in bosonic systems is a fundamental resource for quantum technology applications. In this work, we introduce a framework for analyzing coherence in the Fock-state basis, utilizing context-dependent certification to reveal the quantum non-Gaussian nature of the tested coherence. Rather than relying on global coherence measures, our approach targets specific aspects of coherence, enabling a tailored hierarchical classification. We derive and compare two distinct hierarchies, each representing a different context for coherence in bosonic systems. Motivated by current advancements in optical quantum state engineering, we assess the feasibility and depth of these hierarchies under conditions of loss and thermal noise. Non-Gaussianity, a distinctive characteristic of bosonic quantum states, is pivotal in advancing quantum networks, fault-tolerant quantum computing, and high-precision metrology. Verifying the quantum nature of a state, particularly its non-Gaussian features, is essential for ensuring the reliability and performance of these technologies. However, the specific properties required for each application demand tailored validation thresholds. Here, we introduce a hierarchical framework comprising absolute, relative, and qubit-specific thresholds to assess the non-Gaussianity of local coherences. We illustrate this framework using heralded optical non-Gaussian states with the highest purities available in optical platforms. Quantum coherence between energy eigenstates of harmonic oscillators is essential for quantum physics. Even the most elementary binary superpositions of the ground and the higher eigenstate are highly required for quantum sensing, thermodynamics, and computing. We derive upper bounds for quantum coherences achieved by classical and Gaussian states and operations and, subsequently, obtain a hierarchy of the thresholds for the off-diagonal elements necessary to reach genuine quantum non-Gaussian coherences. We experimentally demonstrate unambiguous observation of quantum non-Gaussian coherences in mechanical vibrations of a single calcium ion up to the superposition of zero and six phonons. The analysis of the robustness with respect to pure dephasing in a motional Ramsey experiment demonstrates the feasibility of their storage for up to more than 20 ms for superpositions with a large energy difference of participating number states. The presented observations prove that atomic oscillations go deeply into a diverse area of discrete quantum non-Gaussian coherent phenomena critical for their applications. more...

GPT-4o is an autoregressive omni model that accepts as input any combination of text, audio, image, and video, and generates any combination of text, audio, and image outputs. It's trained end-to-end across text, vision, and audio, meaning all inputs and outputs are processed by the same neural network. GPT-4o can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to human response time in conversation. It matches GPT-4 Turbo performance on text in English and code, with significant improvement on text in non-English languages, while also being much faster and 50\% cheaper in the API. GPT-4o is especially better at vision and audio understanding compared to existing models. In line with our commitment to building AI safely and consistent with our voluntary commitments to the White House, we are sharing the GPT-4o System Card, which includes our Preparedness Framework evaluations. In this System Card, we provide a detailed look at GPT-4o's capabilities, limitations, and safety evaluations across multiple categories, focusing on speech-to-speech while also evaluating text and image capabilities, and measures we've implemented to ensure the model is safe and aligned. Quantum non-Gaussian states of light have fundamental properties that are essential for a multitude of applications in quantum technology. However, many of these features are difficult to detect using standard criteria due to optical losses and detector inefficiency. As the statistics of light are unknown, the loss correction on the data is unreliable, despite the fact that the losses can be precisely measured. To address this issue, we employ a loss-mitigated verification technique utilising quantum non-Gaussian witnesses, which incorporate the known optical losses and detector inefficiency into their derivation. The performance of superconducting qubits is often limited by dissipation and two-level systems (TLS) losses. The dominant sources of these losses are believed to originate from amorphous materials and defects at interfaces and surfaces, likely as a result of fabrication processes or ambient exposure. Here, we explore a novel wet chemical surface treatment at the Josephson junction-substrate and the substrate-air interfaces by replacing a buffered oxide etch (BOE) cleaning process with one that uses hydrofluoric acid followed by aqueous ammonium fluoride. We show that the ammonium fluoride etch process results in a statistically significant improvement in median $\text{T}_1$ by $\sim22\%$ ($p=0.002$), and a reduction in the number of strongly-coupled TLS in the tunable frequency range. Microwave resonator measurements on samples treated with the ammonium fluoride etch prior to niobium deposition also show $\sim33\%$ lower TLS-induced loss tangent compared to the BOE treated samples. As the chemical treatment primarily modifies the Josephson junction-substrate interface and substrate-air interface, we perform targeted chemical and structural characterizations to examine materials' differences at these interfaces and identify multiple microscopic changes that could contribute to decreased TLS. more...

Emitters of single-photons are essential resources for emerging quantum technologies and developed within different platforms including nonlinear optics, atomic and solid-state systems. The energy level structures of emission processes are critical for reaching and controlling high-quality sources. The most commonly applied test uses a Hanbury-Brown and Twiss (HBT) setup to determine the emitter energy level structure based on fitting temporal correlations of photon detection events. However, only partial information about the emission process is extracted from such detection, that might be followed by an inconclusive fitting of the data. This process predetermines our limited ability to quantify and understand the dynamics in the photon emission process that are of importance for the applications in communication, sensing and computing. In this work, we present a complete analysis based on all normalized coincidences between detection and no-detection events recorded in the same HBT setup to certify expected properties of an emitted photonic state. Superconducting Nb thin films have recently attracted significant attention due to their utility for quantum information technologies. In the processing of Nb thin films, fluoride-based chemical etchants are commonly used to remove surface oxides that are known to affect superconducting quantum devices adversely. However, these same etchants can also introduce hydrogen to form Nb hydrides, potentially negatively impacting microwave loss performance. Here, we present comprehensive materials characterization of Nb hydrides formed in Nb thin films as a function of fluoride chemical treatments. In particular, secondary-ion mass spectrometry, X-ray scattering, and transmission electron microscopy reveal the spatial distribution and phase transformation of Nb hydrides. The rate of hydride formation is determined by the fluoride solution acidity and the etch rate of Nb2O5, which acts as a diffusion barrier for hydrogen into Nb. The resulting Nb hydrides are detrimental to Nb superconducting properties and lead to increased power-independent microwave loss in coplanar waveguide resonators. However, Nb hydrides do not correlate with two-level system loss or device aging mechanisms. Overall, this work provides insight into the formation of Nb hydrides and their role in microwave loss, thus guiding ongoing efforts to maximize coherence time in superconducting quantum devices. more...

We demonstrate a transformational technique for controllably tuning the electrical properties of fabricated thermally oxidized amorphous aluminum-oxide tunnel junctions. Using conventional test equipment to apply an alternating bias to a heated tunnel barrier, giant increases in the room temperature resistance, greater than 70%, can be achieved. The rate of resistance change is shown to be strongly temperature-dependent, and is independent of junction size in the sub-micron regime. In order to measure their tunneling properties at mK temperatures, we characterized transmon qubit junctions treated with this alternating-bias assisted annealing (ABAA) technique. The measured frequencies follow the Ambegaokar-Baratoff relation between the shifted resistance and critical current. Further, these studies show a reduction of junction-contributed loss on the order of $\approx 2 \times10^{-6}$, along with a significant reduction in resonant- and off-resonant-two level system defects when compared to untreated samples. Imaging with high-resolution TEM shows that the barrier is still predominantly amorphous with a more uniform distribution of aluminum coordination across the barrier relative to untreated junctions. This new approach is expected to be widely applicable to a broad range of devices that rely on amorphous aluminum oxide, as well as the many other metal-insulator-metal structures used in modern electronics. more...

Superconducting quantum processors have made significant progress in size and computing potential. As a result, the practical cryogenic limitations of operating large numbers of superconducting qubits are becoming a bottleneck for further scaling. Due to the low thermal conductivity and the dense optical multiplexing capacity of telecommunications fiber, converting qubit signal processing to the optical domain using microwave-to-optics transduction would significantly relax the strain on cryogenic space and thermal budgets. Here, we demonstrate optical readout through an optical fiber of a superconducting transmon qubit connected via a coaxial cable to a fully integrated piezo-optomechanical transducer. Using a demolition readout technique, we achieve a single shot readout fidelity of 81%. Due to the small footprint (<0.15mm$^2$) and the modular fiber-based architecture, this device platform has the potential to scale towards use with thousands of qubits. We introduce a novel concept in topological dynamics, referred to as $k$-divergence, which extends the notion of divergent orbits. Motivated by questions in the theory of inhomogeneous Diophantine approximations, we investigate this notion in the dynamical system given by a certain flow on the space of unimodular lattices in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Our main result is the existence of $k$-divergent lattices for any $k\geq 0$. Quantum non-Gaussianity, a more potent and highly useful form of nonclassicality, excludes all convex mixtures of Gaussian states and Gaussian parametric processes generating them. Here, for the first time, we conclusively test quantum non-Gaussian coincidences of entangled photon pairs with the CHSH-Bell factor $S=2.328\pm0.004$ from a single quantum dot with a depth up to $0.94\pm 0.02$ dB. Such deterministically generated photon pairs fundamentally overcome parametric processes by reducing crucial multiphoton errors. For the quantum non-Gaussian depth of the unheralded (heralded) single-photon state, we achieve the value of $8.08\pm0.05$ dB ($19.06\pm0.29$ dB). Radioactivity was recently discovered as a source of decoherence and correlated errors for the real-world implementation of superconducting quantum processors. In this work, we measure levels of radioactivity present in a typical laboratory environment (from muons, neutrons, and gamma's emitted by naturally occurring radioactive isotopes) and in the most commonly used materials for the assembly and operation of state-of-the-art superconducting qubits. We develop a GEANT-4 based simulation to predict the rate of impacts and the amount of energy released in a qubit chip from each of the mentioned sources. The nonclassicality of quantum states is a fundamental resource for quantum technologies and quantum information tasks in general. In particular, a pivotal aspect of quantum states lies in their coherence properties, encoded in the nondiagonal terms of their density matrix in the Fock-state bosonic basis. We present operational criteria to detect the nonclassicality of individual quantum coherences that only use data obtainable in experimentally realistic scenarios. We analyze and compare the robustness of the nonclassical coherence aspects when the states pass through lossy and noisy channels. The criteria can be immediately applied to experiments with light, atoms, solid-state systems, and mechanical oscillators, thus providing a toolbox allowing practical experiments to more easily detect the nonclassicality of generated states. more...

The optical interference constitutes a paramount resource in modern physics. At the scale of individual atoms and photons, it is a diverse concept that causes different coherent phenomena. We present the experimental characterization of both coherent and statistical properties of light emitted from ensembles of trapped ions increasing with a number of contributing phase-incoherent independent atomic particles ranging from a single to up to several hundreds. It conclusively demonstrates how super-Poissonian quantum statistics non-trivially arises purely from the finite number of indistinguishable single-photon emitters in the limit of a single detection mode. The achieved new optical emission regime in which these independent atoms contribute coherently to the super-Poissonian statistics provides a new perspective on the emergence of optical coherence at the atomic scale and constitutes a unique toolbox for its generation and control at the most microscopic level. more...

Contactless excitation and detection of high harmonic acoustic overtones in a thin insulator single crystal are described using radio frequency spectroscopy techniques. Single crystal [001] silicon wafer samples were investigated, one side covered with a Nb thin film, the common starting point for fabrication of quantum devices. The coupling between electromagnetic signals and mechanical oscillation is achieved from the Lorentz force generated by an external magnetic field. This method is suitable for any sample with a metallic surface or covered with a thin metal film. Quantum non-Gaussian states of photons and phonons are conclusive and direct witnesses of higher-than-quadratic nonlinearities in optical and mechanical processes. Moreover, they are proven resources for quantum sensing, communication and error correction with diverse continuous-variable systems. This review introduces theoretical analyses of nonclassical and quantum non-Gaussian states of photons and phonons. It recapitulates approaches used to derive operational criteria for photons tolerant to optical losses, their application in experiments and their nowadays extension to quantum non-Gaussian photon coincidences. It extends to a recent comparison of quantum non-Gaussianity, including robustness to thermal noise, and sensing capability for high-quality phononic Fock states of single trapped cooled ions. The review can stimulate further development in the criteria of quantum non-Gaussian states and experimental effort to prepare and detect such useful features, navigating the community to advanced quantum physics and technology. more...

This white paper presents a single-layer mask, found at https://github.com/Boulder-Cryogenic-Quantum-Testbed/simple-resonator-mask. It is designed for fabrication of superconducting microwave resonators towards 1:1 comparisons of dielectric losses from the metal-substrate interface. Finite-element electromagnetic simulations are used to determine participation ratios of the four major regions of the on-chip devices, as well as to confirm lack of crosstalk between neighboring devices and demonstrate coupling tunability over three orders of magnitude. The distributed quantum information processing and hybridization of quantum platforms raises increasing demands on the quality of light-matter interaction and realization of efficient quantum interfaces. This becomes particularly challenging for needed states possessing fundamental quantum non-Gaussian (QNG) aspects. They correspond to paramount resources in most potent applications of quantum technologies. We demonstrate the generation of light with provably QNG features from a tunable warm atomic ensemble in a single-mode regime. The light is generated in a spontaneous four-wave mixing process in the presence of decoherence effects caused by a large atomic thermal motion. Despite its high sensitivity to any excess noise, a direct observability of heralded QNG light could be achieved due to a combination of a fast resonant excitation, large spectral bandwidth, and a low absorption loss of resonant photons guaranteed by the source geometry., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures more...

Quantum non-Gaussian mechanical states from inherently nonlinear quantum processes are already required in a range of applications spanning from quantum sensing up to quantum computing with continuous variables. The discrete building blocks of such states are the energy eigenstates - Fock states. Despite the progress in their preparation, the remaining imperfections can still invisibly cause loss of the critical quantum non-Gaussian aspects of the phonon distribution relevant in the applications. We derive the most challenging hierarchy of quantum non-Gaussian criteria for the individual mechanical Fock states and demonstrate its implementation on the characterization of single trapped-ion oscillator states up to 10~phonons. We analyze the depth of quantum non-Gaussian features under mechanical heating and predict their application in quantum sensing. $k$-level correlation is a local statistic of sequences modulo 1, describing the local spacings of $k$-tuples of elements. For $k = 2$ this is also known as pair correlation. We show that there exists a well spaced increasing sequence of reals with additive energy of order $N^3$ and Poissonian $k$-level correlation for all integers $k \geq 2$, answering in the affirmative a question raised by Aistleitner, El-Baz, and Munsch. The construction is probabilistic, and so we do not obtain a specific sequence satisfying this condition. To prove this, we show that random perturbations of a sequence with small discrepancy gives, almost surely, a sequence with Poissonian $k$-level correlation, a fact which may be of independent interest., Comment: 11 pages more...

Many applications in quantum communication, sensing and computation need provably quantum non-Gaussian light. Recently such light, witnessed by a negative Wigner function, has been estimated using homodyne tomography from a single atom dispersively coupled to a high-finesse cavity. This opens an investigation of quantum non-Gaussian light for many experiments with atoms and solid-state emitters. However, at their early stage, an atom or emitter in a cavity system with different channels to the environment and additional noise are insufficient to produce negative Wigner functions. Moreover, homodyne detection is frequently challenging for such experiments. We analyse these issues and prove that such cavities can be used to emit quantum non-Gaussian light employing single-photon detection in the Hanbury Brown and Twiss configuration and quantum non-Gaussianity criteria suitable for this measurement. We investigate in detail cases of considerable cavity leakage when the negativity of the Wigner function disappears completely. Advantageously, quantum non-Gaussian light can be still conclusively proven for a large set of the cavity parameters at the cost of overall measurement time, even if noise is present., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures more...

Quantum non-Gaussian states represent an important class of highly non-classical states whose preparation requires quantum operations or measurements beyond the class of Gaussian operations and statistical mixing. Here we derive criteria for certification of quantum non-Gaussianity based on probability of vacuum in the original quantum state and a state transmitted through a lossy channel with transmittance T. We prove that the criteria hold for arbitrary multimode states, which is important for their applicability in experiments with broadband sources and single-photon detectors. Interestingly, our approach allows to detect quantum non-Gaussianity using only one photodetector instead of complex multiplexed photon detection schemes, at the cost of increased experimental time. We also formulate a quantum non-Gaussianity criterion based on the vacuum probability and mean photon number of the state and we show that this criterion is closely related to the criteria based on pair of vacuum probabilities. Memory decline is a concern for aging populations across the globe. Positive affect plays an important role in healthy aging, but its link with memory decline has remained unclear. In the present study, we examined associations between positive affect (i.e., feeling enthusiastic, attentive, proud, active) and memory (i.e., immediate and delayed recall), drawing from a 9-year longitudinal study of a national sample of 991 middle-age and older U.S. adults. Results revealed that positive affect was associated with less memory decline across 9 years when analyses controlled for age, gender, education, depression, negative affect, and extraversion. Findings generalized across another measure that assessed additional facets of positive affect, across different (but not all) facets of positive affect and memory, and across age, gender, and education; findings did not emerge for negative affect. Reverse longitudinal associations between memory and positive affect were not significant. Possible pathways linking positive affect and memory functioning are discussed.
