This article explores my relational learning reflections with the Laitu Khyeng Indigenous community in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), Bangladesh, focusing on Indigenous perspectives on climate change education. Implementing a relational theoretical framework, I share my reflections on relational learning in this research as part of being accountable to the Indigenous community. Through exploring Indigenous land-based climate change research, five central themes emerge Indigenous land rights, relationship with the environment, community-led relationality as collaboration, intergenerational relational knowledge and relationality as ethical reciprocity. The findings explore the intrinsic connection between Indigenous communities and their ancestral territories, emphasising the significance of upholding Indigenous sovereignty over land for sustainable adaptation to climate change. In this article, I highlight the importance of relational learning as a form of education, fostering resilience rooted in preserving traditional practices and spaces. Relationality with the environment is central to Indigenous climate education, promoting understanding and reciprocity with the land. In my learning, I learned that community dynamics and collaborative learning are essential for effective climate education, emphasising collective action and diverse perspectives. In relational learning, inter-generational knowledge transmission ensures the preservation and sharing of traditional land-based knowledge across generations, forming the foundation for sustainable adaptation strategies. Ethical engagement and reciprocity guide research interactions, emphasising mutual respect and cultural sensitivity. By centring Indigenous perspectives and knowledge systems, this study advocates for community-led approaches to climate change education, fostering resilience and environmental stewardship within Indigenous communities.

Purpose: Participatory extension programmes (PEPs) are a well-known approach to achieve change on an on-farm level. This study examines whether there is a change in on-farm resilience due to PEP participation, by identifying whether participation leads to an increase in resilience capacities, and which aspects of the programme contribute to this. Design/Methodology/Approach: A case study was selected in Aotearoa New Zealand, where 33 interviewees had participated in a 3-year PEP. Findings: Findings show that participation in the PEP led to an increase in the resilience capacities "robustness" and "adaptability." Attributes via which the PEP contributed to this are: (i) increasing "openness" by connecting to others in the community and learning collectively, (ii) increasing "diversity" by using new tools and diversifying land use, and (iii) improving "system reserves" by building labour and feed resources. robustness adaptability openness diversity system reserves Practical implications: A resilience framework is applied to evaluation that helps decision-makers identify the multifaceted effects of PEP participation. Insights from the study also contribute to future design of agricultural PEPs, by enabling resilience-building attributes through a novel 'resilience wheel' assessment tool. Theoretical implications: Novel theoretical insights from this study include that PEPs can be evaluated by using a resilience framework and show which resilience attributes are specifically important to establish change via PEP participation. Originality/value: This research is the first to evaluate the effect of PEP participation from a resilience perspective.

This paper proposes that the paradigm of relationality, engaged methodologically, can be the basis of praxis that purposefully moves away from business-oriented notions of "best practices" and toward education research that meets the needs of Indigenous and Black communities currently designing futures within settler colonial states during climate catastrophe. In so doing, the paper considers what a critical Indigenous research paradigm requires of researchers, what a critical Black epistemology requires, and what we can learn by bringing the two together in a relational approach to qualitative research. Relationality is defined and placed in historical context. The author's positionality is engaged by exploring his relationship to relationality through examination of the confluence of Black and Indigenous epistemologies in the United States. Through auto-reflection on a qualitative study of land-based education, this paper analyzes research "openings" as an example of relational methodology praxis. The paper offers a critical analysis of specific, detailed methodological actions undertaken to practice relationality in order to create cracks in existing educational research methodologies through which relationality can take root.

This collaboration between the Nez Perce Tribe and the University of Idaho aimed to address the unique needs and perspectives required for Tribal Natural Resources Management (TNRM). TNRM involves the governance and caretaking of the land and waters, emphasizing the recognition of cultural significance, sovereignty, self-determination, and traditional knowledge systems. A workforce development program was created, focusing on Fisheries, Forestry, and Fire Management, while being grounded in Indigenous knowledge, Indigenous STEM identities, and culturally sustaining pedagogy. The philosophical foundations of the program emphasized the importance of integrating Indigenous knowledge and learning approaches alongside technical skills. By broadening the conceptions of "what counts" in science, students were encouraged to recognize the value of Indigenous knowledge and develop a sense of responsibility toward caring for the Land and waters. Data collected from the program revealed its success in helping students connect Indigenous ways of knowing to their understanding of STEM. Students found meaning in Indigenous knowledge as a means to perpetuate Nimiipuu lifeways, while also recognizing the utility of Western STEM. The involvement of Elders and Native professionals as teachers in the STEM curriculum highlighted the importance of intergenerational knowledge transmission. By combining Indigenous ways of knowing with technical skills, the program successfully laid the groundwork for students to become future leaders in Tribal Natural Resources Management, equipped with the necessary cultural, environmental, and scientific expertise to caretake Lands and waters effectively.

Education by and for Indigenous peoples needs to focus on and honor the life-affirming notions of land- and place-based connections, our individual and collective responsibilities, reciprocity, and relationships. In todays' school settings, redefining what "success" looks like as well as supporting Indigenous identities are critical to teaching and learning in general, and for science education in particular. In contemporary schools, we, as educators, need to focus on place-based knowledges and the concept of reciprocity as being important to the learning, identities, and well-being of our Indigenous students. This is challenging because western science education often attempts to be objective, which removes context and creates barriers for Indigenous students. For this study, I worked with eight students and two faculty in an Environmental Science program at a small, private, 4-year university in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. I employed a qualitative design, consisting mainly of interviews, observations, case studies, and the sharing of stories with students and their instructors. My participants highlighted many important aspects of Indigenous science learning, learning focused on decolonization and sovereignty, and the role reciprocity plays in their lives and their educational motivation. I focus on three themes that emerged from this work: one) that land-based and place-based education, is critical for Indigenous students; two) that reciprocity must be included in how we educate our Indigenous students; and three) that decolonizing science education will include supporting both place-based learning and reciprocity.

The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a National Scenic Trail that extends approximately 2,653 miles from the border of California and Mexico to the border of Washington State and Canada. This study examined land management and hiker issues that day, overnight, and thru-hikers experience in California while navigating the PCT in order to inform land managers. This quantitative survey, completed through Qualtrics, was disseminated to thru-hikers who completed the trail between 2017 and 2021, and individuals who used the trail for shorter durations. Survey questions focused on technology, Trail Angels, rule enforcement by land management agencies, the permitting process by the Pacific Crest Trail Association (PCTA), hiker education, and hiker demographics. Descriptive statistics were calculated and analyzed. Results indicate that most hikers prefer articles on the PCTA website, Leave No Trace (LNT) website, and certifications to gain education about the trail. They also felt that personal contacts were the most effective way to gain pre-trip education. Almost all hikers use technology on the trail, such as navigation or informational apps, emergency calls, taking photos, and listening to videos or music. More thru-hikers rely on navigational apps than day/overnight users. Many hikers felt there should be more rangers in the backcountry but also felt that social enforcement of rules is effective. Regarding Trail Angels, thru-hikers felt they were important for transportation, food/water, and shelter. Managerial implications for public land managers included a need to develop ways to educate users. This can be done in-person, online, or through signage. Increasing the presence of rangers or volunteers on the trail was also recommended, as well as developing area or jurisdiction-specific apps for information and education about trail conditions or rules. Additional education of sustainable hiking behaviors may help mitigate potential negative impacts hikers may have on the environment. Land managers must continue to assess what is currently being done and reevaluate on an ongoing basis in order to preserve and maintain sustainable use of public lands.

This article examines how school and non-school policies interact to reinforce or disrupt school segregation in the context of suburban communities and how these systems are maintained by structural and institutional mechanisms. Methodologically, we use a case study approach to delve deeply into the interpretation and implementation of school attendance zone redesign and non-school policies, specifically land use policies and tools. We draw on neo-institutionalist theory and Ray's (2019) framework of racialized organizations to make sense of school districts, planning agencies, and their policies. We find that school district rezoning policies provide a weak regulatory framework for desegregating schools because school zoning decisions are not made in a vacuum but rather are shaped by policies and actions taken by other actors in a multi-level governance structure. School zoning policies themselves prioritized capacity over desegregation, and regulations and norms governing the public engagement processes privilege opposition to desegregation. Our study points to the importance of greater coordination across governmental levels and policy arenas, and underscores how desegregation policy is part of a political and relational process between advocates, elected leaders, families, and youth across policy sectors.

Agent-based modeling is a promising tool for familiarizing students with complex systems as well as programming skills. Human-environment systems, for instance, entail complex interdependencies that need to be considered when modeling these systems. This complexity is often neglected in teaching modeling approaches. For a heterogeneous group of master's students at a German university, we pre-built an agent-based model. In class, this was used to teach modeling impacts of land use policies and markets on ecosystem services. As part of the course, the students had to perform small research projects with the model in groups of two. This study aims to evaluate how well students could deal with the complexity involved in the model based on their group work outcomes. Chosen indicators were, e.g., the appropriateness of their research goals, the suitability of the methods applied, and how well they acknowledged the limitations. Our study results revealed that teaching complex systems does not need to be done with too simplistic models. Most students, even with little background in modeling and programming, were able to deal with the complex model setup, conduct small research projects, and have a thoughtful discussion on the limitations involved. With adequate theoretical input during lectures, we recommend using models that do not hide the complexity of the systems but foster a realistic simplification of the interactions.

Researchers of child learning and development continue to hone understandings of cultural and social impacts on cognition, development, and education. Concurrently, Indigenous educators call for decolonizing schooling at all levels. Land-based education (LBE), as an instructional approach, responds to calls to decolonize education. The authors use LBE to understand the cultural and social nuances and complexities of Indigenous learning in preschool and primary school age Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander children. Through ethnographic case studies in Hawai'i and Samoa, we expand conceptions of culture in learning to attune to the diversity and specificity of Indigenous contexts, argue that LBE must be place-based, and recognize land is an active and necessary coparticipant in the learning process.

Jane Card's previous work on the power of images in conveying particular interpretations and her advice about how to use visual material effectively in classrooms will be familiar to readers of "Teaching History." In this article she focuses specifically on the capacity of visual representations to convey a compelling message about the significance of particular events, creating an impression that goes on to shape interpretations of the larger story of which they form a part. These popular interpretations may then prove very long-lasting--effectively resistant to subsequent changes within the academic scholarship. Card illustrates this phenomenon with two examples, relevant to topics commonly taught within the National Curriculum and beyond: the impact of the Norman Conquest on Anglo-Saxon England and the defeat of the Spanish Armada.

The purpose of this research is to examine the role of positive law and customary law in protecting indigenous peoples' rights to land literation and natural resources and their impact on community welfare. The research method used is normative legal studies. Customary law is focused on the customary law of the Tobaru tribe. The Tobaru tribe is one of the well-known tribes in Indonesia, which is famous for its land rights law ("Tola Gumi"). The study results reveal that the regulations of the central government and the regional government of North Maluku have not guaranteed the implementation of legal protection and the welfare of indigenous peoples, especially for the Tobaru tribe. This is also evidenced by the fact that the regional government has not implemented the Constitutional Court Decision in the North Maluku region. This legal review shows that three of the five pillars of the state, namely protection of human rights, social justice, and antidiscrimination, have not been implemented properly. Indigenous people are very dependent on land as their main source of livelihood for farming. Weak legal protections, such as the absence of land titles, make them vulnerable to social conflicts and lose their customary land rights. This research implies that it is hoped that the government will provide consistent legal protection for the welfare of indigenous peoples. Researchers encourage future studies related to learning about the rights of indigenous peoples in terms of the international legal system.

The impact of Residential Schools on Indigenous People has left a long-lasting crippling effect on the subsequent generations of Indigenous youth. The resultant intergenerational loss of identity and self-value has cost the Indigenous People and their communities immensely. Aboriginal People based their education system on the real world around them for centuries and are intrinsically attached to nature. This article investigates the benefits of re-introducing Indigenous youth to a land-based educational system as a means of re-attaching the severed familial and communal ties. The very nature of traditional Land-based education practices such as hunting and gathering form strong bonds between participants and nature, and lays the foundation for interpersonal community relationships. It is believed that, by returning to a land-based teaching approach, Aboriginal communities can be rebuilt.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the spatial planning based on wisdom in the context of resolving social conflicts as a form of learning about the recognition and protection of indigenous peoples in law. The main data sources are obtained from primary legal materials in the form of laws and regulations, regional regulations, and literature studies that focus on spatial planning, local wisdom, and social conflict resolution. The research methodology uses a juridical-normative approach. Content analysis was conducted in order to obtain relevant research results. The findings reveal that local government regulations on spatial planning of the West Papua Customary Law Community are in synergy with central government regulations as regulated in Law No. 27 of 2007 on Spatial Planning. The two laws contribute to the resolution of social conflicts because of the recognition and protection of the sustainability of natural resources which are the living space (lebensraum) of the indigenous peoples of West Papua. An important lesson that can be learned is that spatial planning based on local wisdom is centered on harmony, balance, and sustainability in order to overcome social conflicts between the spatial planning of customary law communities and the spatial planning stipulated by national law, namely by preparing and determining spatial planning through the top down of the central government, then The village, district, district governments are bottom up, and meet in the discussion, preparation and determination of spatial planning in the Province. The expected implication is that the central government and local governments pay special attention to policy practices in spatial planning that are more socially just and in accordance with the needs of indigenous and tribal peoples. The aim is to create harmonization between customary law and national law so that they do not overlap each other, which in turn can lead to greater social conflicts in the future.

This study analyzes factors that triggered the land-ownership struggle for the Titi Tsoro forest area, the Rights for Cultivation Use and to analyze the various differences in interests related to the land's ownership as a major community resource or a production asset for national plantation company named as PTPN XII. This research is qualitative in nature and applies social movement theory. The informants for this research were the conflicting parties. Data were collected using observations, interviews, and documentation. The analysis went through four steps, namely data collection, data filtering, data classification, and conclusions. Results show The settlement of this agrarian conflict has pursued both legal and non-legal means. Various efforts have been made by both parties to arrive at a mutually beneficial solution for both parties, but these efforts have so far failed to find a suitable mutual agreement. Over time, this agrarian conflict has received encouragement and support from various political organizations, such as political parties, legislative institutions, and the ruling elite, who may support the community in order to gain public popularity and secure votes. The more parties that are involved in a conflict, the more difficult it is to resolve it. Negotiations and legal efforts have not been able to overcome this difficulty in this case. A new approach is needed that incorporates customary arbitration that has power over the law.

Indigenous language reclamation efforts are pushing academic ideas of what language is, in order to be accountable to Indigenous epistemologies. Simultaneously, as our Indigenous languages grow, we (academics) are pushed to grow beyond the boundaries of disciplines. Categories of "language" and "land" have been segregated by this colonial structure. In this study, as we bring them together, we seek to describe what the ontology in play looks like. We argue that as reclamation efforts successfully grow more young speakers, we are able to push against colonial constructs of learning when we witness learning in the context of movement, land, and intergenerational interactions. In this article, we closely examine episodes from three walks taken from a broader corpus of walks (14), to describe how one Elder walking with groups of two children constructed knowledge and joint meaning-making in the Ojibwe language while walking on Ojibwe lands. We take seriously the idea that there is an Indigenous epistemology at work in these cultural ecologies, one that sees humans as a part of the natural world, at play on the walks. Here we describe specifically what this looks like in the moment-to-moment interactions, and how we read these constellations of cultural practices as an apprenticeship into sustaining relationships with land.

The Pacific Crest Trail is a National Scenic Trail that runs from Mexico to Canada. Use of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) has increased in the past 20 years. It is important to understand how an increase in use can impact the environment and sustainable practices, land management practices, and the hiker experience. Participants included 15 land managers in California and 25 thru-hikers who completed the PCT. In-depth interviews were conducted, and participants were asked questions about hiker interactions, trail angels, land manager interactions, and the permitting process. Data were transcribed verbatim and coded by three independent coders to reach a 90% inter-rater reliability. Emerging themes included: human impacts, permitting and education, and rule enforcement. Hikers also talked about the benefits of in-person education and the need for consistent communication between thru-hikers and land managers. Recommendations for sustainable practices include improvements to the permitting system, education, enforcement, and communication.

This comparative curricular study examines the educational functions of the Swedish Sámi nomad school curricula before and after a central school reform in the 1960s. Due to the reform, the nomad school, a boarding school system for the Indigenous Sámi people in Sweden, was formed to bring about systemic changes in the education of Sámi children, to be more inclusive, and to meet new democratic educational demands. This study presents an in-depth examination of the written curricula through a thematic analysis by scrutinising the nomad School syllabi of 1956 (UP56) and 1969 (Lgr69), with an emphasis on aspects of continuity and change. In theoretical terms, the study is inspired by Biesta's educational functions. This study identified the continued importance of reindeer husbandry (RH), while the reform transformed the traditional RH context towards adaptation to the needs of the Swedish meat industry, in a period marked by intrusion into traditional Sámi lands. The study also found that although the education system set out to protect the Sámi language after the reform, the Sámi language was consistently given a low degree of importance in the curricula. Another source of tension concerns the explicit policy to open the Sámi education for all Sámi children at the same time, educating differentiation among Sámi.

Do more natural settings improve students' learning? We collected surveys immediately following 283 U.S.-based environmental education (EE) field trip programs for youth and used land cover data to examine the relationship between levels of naturalness, defined as the percentage of natural land cover of the EE field trip site, and student learning outcomes. We also examined whether differences in levels of naturalness between students' day-to-day environment and the field trip setting were related to student learning outcomes. When controlling for grade and race, both levels of naturalness and novel levels of naturalness accounted for approximately 4% of the variance in student outcomes suggesting that other field trip characteristics are more influential.

This article builds on a qualitative study of interactions and negotiations with respect to existential questions in an ECEC department with children from 3 to 6 years of age, as part of a larger empirical study on the same topic. In the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research's 2017 curriculum for Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC), there is a stated requirement that the staff shall explore and wonder at existential questions together with the children. This article highlights how a walk through a local graveyard with its material artefacts functioning as cultural tools may open a new context for interaction and negotiation regarding death as an existential issue. Vygotsky's sociocultural theory of mediated action and Bakhtin's theory of multivoicedness form the framework for the interpretation together with Wartofsky's three-level theory of artefacts. The method employed to establish the data was participated observation with a handheld video camera.

In this article, we present a critical reflection on the academy's approach to knowledge production and dissemination in Australian universities and propose a paradigm shift towards an approach that actively promotes Indigenous knowledges within the academic canon and searches for complementarity and shared interests between Indigenous and Western epistemes. We begin this article with discussion of the role of the academy, and Western and Indigenous discourses around knowledge. From there we discuss contemporary issues of bushfire management and the Juukan Gorge destruction as illustrations to make a case for the role of the academy in engaging with knowledges that arise outside Western paradigms; and translating those knowledges to diverse audiences. Finally, we examine obstacles that must be addressed in a robust academic pursuit of epistemological synergy. Issues of knowledge ownership, epistemological and methodological challenges, and neo-colonialism are discussed as critical aspects of all collaboration towards knowledge integration.

In this article Sharon Stein and Jan Hare ask how higher education institutions might begin to confront the connections between climate change and colonization. To grapple with this question, they examine the dynamics through which climate action can reproduce colonial relations and reflect on the challenges, complexities, and possibilities that emerged in the context of one university's Indigenous engagement efforts around a climate emergency declaration. The authors suggest that if universities seek to interrupt climate colonialism, they will need to commit to upholding Indigenous rights, knowledges, and self-determination and to accepting responsibility for repairing colonial harm and developing respectful, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities and lands. To fulfill these commitments, universities will need to avoid the common tendency to seek quick solutions and instead support the development of institutional conditions and individual capacities that would make it possible to have difficult conversations about the historical and ongoing ways that they have been complicit in social and ecological harm.

This study determined policy initiatives for improving the contributions of university agricultural education and extension institutions to environmental and sustainable development (ESD) in agriculture. The study was carried out in Cross River State. Survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study of 534, comprising 195 registered farmers who have continuously participated in ADP farmer field school training from the State; 70 graduate extension personnel; 167 final year agriculture students and 102 lecturers. Agricultural education programme in the Universities in Cross River State was used for the study. The study adopted a triangulation technique involving mixed methods of data collection. Both instruments were face validated by three experts in the field of agriculture with a reliability coefficient of 0.83 obtained through Cronbach alpha reliability method. Data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and independent t-test statistic. The study identified (17) policy initiatives that could improve the contributions of agricultural education and extension institutions to ESD in agriculture in Cross River State. It was recommended among others that the identified policy initiatives should be integrated into university agricultural education and extension institutions and properly implemented.

Erasmus+ CityLab Program at Universidad de Belgrano School of Architecture and Urban Planning, has focused on urban structure as generator of dynamic and transformable spaces, through a local case located at Juan B. Justo Avenue corridor, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The CityLab project motivated students to experience an integrative 3-year Problem-Based Learning process, related to Morphology Communication and Digital Media, Urban and Territorial Planning, Final Degree Project, as well as integration with School of Public Relations. More than 75 students participated in this international programme to explore, diagnose and re-think city scale, as well as to discover, build and apply technological tools. Land use and mobility regulations were introduced with the participation of stakeholders and external experts in different stages from diagnosis to final project validation. Students' and teachers' staff contribution to the academic final conference "PBL for Sustainable Cities"- September 2018, Bogotá, produced a motivating socialization in collaboration with local partners.

This paper explores the process of developing a continuing education program for tribal land professionals working in tribal land offices across the United States. Born from discussions surrounding the need to professionalize careers in tribal land offices, the National Tribal Land Association developed a certification program for land office staff and tribal citizens interested in careers in tribal land offices. This program consists of 12 courses ranging from beginning/foundation courses to advanced/applied courses in land management and planning, land acquisition, general realty, and real estate practices and procedures.

Study abroad host families and communities in the Global South frequently provide learning experiences to study abroad programs in search of 'intercultural experiences' and 'global competency' to students from the Global North. This paper shares findings from a multi-sited ethnographic research project exploring cultural and economic impacts on host communities in Thailand who hosted U.S. study abroad programs and students. The study found that rather than participating solely for economic gain, host families participated in the global study abroad economy to preserve local knowledge, learn about cultural others, and leverage this knowledge and affiliations in negotiations with local government over land use and the right of communities remain in place. It also found that creation of systems of distributive benefit (systems that ensured transparency and equal sharing of economic benefits received from hosting students) by local government helped to mitigate unwanted impacts from outside visitors while allowing host communities opportunities to engage with the global study abroad economy.

The article outlines ways that teachers could use the content in Biomes and Food Security unit in the Australian curriculum, and its state and territory versions, to encourage their students to engage with higher order thinking. It first briefly discusses how to describe and classify higher-order thinking and argues that concepts are central to this thinking. It also argues that powerful knowledge, an idea associated with Michael Young, develops the same ways of thinking. The article then discusses the higher order actions of explaining (in the sense of explaining causation), analysing, synthesising (or generalising) and evaluating, and how they can be applied to the content of the unit. The contribution of geography's major concepts (such as place and interconnection) to higher order thinking, and therefore to making the unit "geographical," is also discussed. The article concludes with a description of a way of teaching the unit as an extended inquiry, organised as a series of questions. This strategy provides many opportunities to use higher order thinking, because to answer the questions students will have to explain, analyse, synthesise, generalise and evaluate, while the whole unit becomes an exercise in problem solving.

This design case details the critical design decisions used in the development of an e-learning module library for North Carolina local government officials focused on land use regulations. These modules cover topics from an introduction to land use regulations, to evidentiary hearing conduct guidelines, defining vested rights, and explaining how to adopt and amend an ordinance. This project was in response to the North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) members' increased requests for training in this subject area. This organization requested the assistance of the two faculty members at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Government (SOG) who specialize in this content area. Additionally, the professional organization wanted to mitigate risk from cases going to litigation for improper land use decisions. The Target Accomplishment Past Prototype Artifact (TAPPA) Process (Moore, 2016) was used for the module development. This five-step process emphasizes the rapid development of distance education content artifacts in close collaboration with subject matter experts. Between 2013 and 2018, the TAPPA iterative design process guided the development of sixteen modules moving from initial script to finished modules. This design case is relevant for instructional designers who need to develop comprehensive e-learning modules covering complex and often complicated tasks. Examples of design decisions, informed by Clark and Mayer (2016)'s principles of multimedia design, are dispersed through the design case.

This article engages in curriculum work regarding the theft of Black bodies and history/ies, the plundering of Black cemeteries, and sustained hegemonic efforts to use and reuse Black bodies for white/settler onto-epistemological advancements. In particular, this article draws from assemblages of violence and necropolitics to explore implications of postmortem racism on curriculum studies. By tracing the history of body snatching, we identify and discuss the problematic of snatching as a practice and connect it to the problematic of white/settler onto-epistemologies that remain (violently) connected to educational research. The implications of these problematics lead us to call for more "wake work" in embodying, decolonizing, and unsettling curriculum.

This paper focuses on the meaning of education for reconciliation in the context of Canadian settler-colonialism. It captures an attempt to delve into the meaning of reconciliation as an experiential process, through learning on the land with the Tahltan People. We focus on reconciliation not as a theory or political discourse, but rather as a meeting point of theory and experience. We identify and discuss four main components of education for reconciliation: Land as educator, Indigenous knowledge and pedagogy, reciprocity, and sovereignty. We argue for the need to shift from superficial and theoretical discourses of reconciliation in the classrooms to deep engagement with Indigenous knowledge and ways of living on the land.

This study investigated whether the environmental determinist approach, which was effective in geographical research especially at the beginning of 20th century and generally believed to be abandoned in the 1920's, still had impact on geography teacher candidates. With this aim in mind, teacher candidates were asked to prepare a single question by selecting only one of the four given themes and providing a written text consisting of expected answers to their questions in order to contribute to a questionnaire prepared at high school level. The study utilized document analysis method which is a qualitative research method. The study, composed of 224 geography teacher candidates during four separate academic periods, focused on the theme of rural habitats/settlements in Turkey which was selected by 123 of the participants to prepare questions while the other topics were also evaluated to support the study. As a result, it was determined that 96 of the questions prepared about the theme of rural habitats/settlements in Turkey which was selected by 123 teacher candidates were related to environmental determinist approach. It was found that teacher candidates were directly influenced by the dominant power of nature without taking into consideration the impact of man on environment or the mutual interaction between man and environment. Also, it was observed that teacher candidates did not follow academic level articles or other scientific studies and only used textbooks and they did not have any skills in regards to using documents while they prepared the questions.

Elevated levels of bacteria impact the use of the Little River watershed in Texas. The amount of bacteria entering the waterway could be reduced if landowners within the watershed received water-related information and adopted best management practices. However, landowners' access to water-related information is limited, perhaps, because the information is not targeted to them and their preferences. Therefore, to identify landowners' communication preferences for receiving water-related information, we assessed 275 landowners in the Texas Little River watershed using a paper questionnaire. Respondents preferred water-related information delivered via websites monthly and direct mailings quarterly, twice annually, and annually and least preferred social media platforms as a communication medium. Yet, we found no statistically significant differences between respondents' demographics and their preferred communication mediums. Furthermore, respondents identified Texas A&M AgriLife Extension as the most trustworthy source of water-related information. Water resource experts, therefore, should disseminate information using websites and direct mailings in partnership with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. Further research should be conducted using observations, focus groups, and interviews during the watershed-based planning process to understand reasons for landowners' communication preferences. "In the twentieth century, we humans began to transform our surroundings, our societies, and even ourselves. Without really intending to, we have introduced changes so rapid and so massive that our species has become the equivalent of a new geological force. That is why many scholars have begun to argue that planet Earth has entered a new geological age, the Anthropocene epoch, or the 'era of humans.'" David Christian presents a highly modern, scientific version of Cosmic Education using university interdisciplinary language. Like Montessori education, the Anthropocene chapter is an exercise in complexity theory.

Purpose: Historical trauma has been widely applied to American Indian/Alaska Native and other Indigenous populations and includes dimensions of language, sociocultural, and land losses and associated physical and mental disorders, as well as economic hardships. Insufficient evidence remains on the experiences of historical trauma due to waves of colonization for mixed-race Mexican people with indigenous ancestry (el pueblo mestizo). Research Question: Drawing from our critical lenses and epistemic advantages as indigenous feminist scholars, we ask, "How can historical trauma be understood through present-day discourse of two mestizo communities? What are public health practice and policy implications for healing historical trauma among mestizo populations?" Methodology and Approach: We analyzed the discourse from two community projects--focus groups and ethnographic field notes from a study in the U.S.-Mexico border region (2012-2014) and field notes and digital stories from a service-learning course in northern New Mexico (2016-2018). Findings: Our analysis describes the social and historical experiences of Mexicans, Mexican Americans, Chicanas/os, and Nuevo Mexicano peoples in the southwestern border region of the United States. We found four salient themes as manifestations of "soul-wound": (1) violence/fear, (2) discrimination/shame, (3) loss, and (4) deep sorrow. Themes mitigating the trauma were community resiliency rooted in "querencia" (deep connection to land/home/people) and "conscientizacion" (critical consciousness). Conclusion: Historical trauma experienced by mestizo Latinx communities is rooted in local cultural and intergenerational narratives that link traumatic events in the historic past to contemporary local experiences. Future public health interventions should draw on culturally centered strength-based resilience approaches for healing trauma and advancing health equity.

This case study addresses the issue of climate change denial among students in their first year of vocational education. It was possible to shake the belief that man-made climate change was not happening, through letting students measure the potential of natural forest vegetation and compare their findings with those gathered by their peers nine years earlier. The comparison revealed that old forests had turned into ecosystems, which were adapted for dryer warmer climates. For education for sustainable development, forest education and biology lessons offer the opportunity to establish a long term project, in which peer-to-peer-learning over generations of students is possible, with a high rate of acceptance of the results generated by the former students.

This empirical study intends to present core results of the change in environmental literacy of German students by analysing PISA 2006 and 2015 data. The study is carried out within the scope of environmental literacy in science education. The data are based on findings of both PISA 2006 data (N= 4891) and PISA 2015 data (N= 6504) of German students which were published in the official PISA site (http://www.pisa.oecd.org). In this study, a valid and a reliable 'environmental literacy' scale is developed. In addition, students' attitudes towards science affecting their environmental literacy are compared between 2006 and 2015. The study is conducted based on the paradigm of a descriptive field study survey. The validity and reliability of the 'environmental literacy' scale is tested in two stages by applying exploratory factor analysis with SPSS and confirmatory factor analysis with AMOS. In addition, parametric tests (ANOVA) and correlation are used to assess the data obtained from the analysis of quantitative data. The findings demonstrate a positive and meaningful relationship between 'environmental literacy' and the sub-factors (Environmental Awareness (EA), Environmental Responsibility (ER), and Development of Environmental Behavior (DEB)) (r[subscript EA] = 0.73, r[subscript ER] = 0.43, r[subscript DEP] = 0,37, p < 0.01). Moreover, there is an increase in the mean of the environmental literacy ([X-bar][subscript 2006] = 2,55; [X-bar][subscript 2015] = 2,58). According to the results, the major of students (63 % and over) indicate that 'they can describe the role of antibiotics in the treatment of disease' and 'they can predict how changes to an environment will affect the survival of certain species' easily on their own in both 2006 and 2015. However, approximately 20 % of German students point out that they cannot recognize the science question that underlies a newspaper report on a health issue' on their own. In addition, the majority of German students (80 %) point out that they have information about the consequences of clearing forests for other land use in 2006 and 2015. On the other hand, more than 60 % of German students think that they do not have sufficient knowledge about the use of GMO in 2006 and 2015. In the light of the results of this study some suggestions related to environmental issues for the development of science curricula are discussed. For instance, one of the suggestions is that the subject of genetically modified organisms and health issue should be more comprehensive in the German science curricula. In addition, critical reflection and decision making about science issues is important to educate an environmental literate citizen.

During the past several decades, there has been a growing awareness of the ways humans affect Earth systems. As global problems emerge, educating the next generation of citizens to be able to make informed choices related to future outcomes is increasingly important. The challenge for educators is figuring out how to prepare students to think about complex systems and sustainability. This article describes a set of design principles used to create online curriculum modules related to Earth's systems and sustainability. The modules include interactive, computer-based, dynamic Earth systems models that enable students to track changes that occur over time. Embedded prompts help students focus on stocks and flows within the system. This approach helps students to identify important resources in the models (stock prompt), to explain the processes that are changing the availability of the stock (process prompt), and to explore real-world examples (application prompts). We report how students learn about the sustainability of soil, a critical resource for growing food, in the module called "Can we feed the growing population?" We give an example of a model-based task, which shows how students identify stocks and flows associated with the model and how they consider human actions in the system. We discuss educational and research implications of using stocks and flows as a framework to structure students' exploration of dynamic models of Earth systems in teaching sustainability.

This paper examines the inequality in secondary school attainment and its determinants across gender, caste, and ethnic group in rural Nepal. Using the primary data from a questionnaire survey, a series of interviews, and school observations, this study found that girls' school attainment is significantly lower than that of boys'. Similarly, "Dalit" (the lowest caste) and "Janajati" (indigenous, disadvantaged ethnic groups) students' school attainment is considerably lower than that of "Brahman and Chhetri" (high caste and privileged ethnic groups) students. Furthermore, the regression analysis using the education production function approach revealed that household chores, father's education, land sufficiency, student/teacher ratio, and local caste/ethnic composition are significant determinants affecting students' school attainment. However, students' desired level of education and the number of siblings they have were insignificant in this study. The results indicate that policy for inclusive education should be based on the local socio-cultural environment, especially with regard to the caste/ethnic composition of the local community.

In order to achieve the regional sustainability and bio-cultural preservation, environmental education of youth will be critical, however due to the lack of the specific subject of regional studies at the educational curriculum, students are not able to achieve the skills to understand the local environment and feel isolated from nature. We decided that, it would be very important to create active nature fieldworks where students can connect with nature by using five senses of perception (hearing, seeing, smelling, touching and tasting), to educate the feeling of connection and belonging to the nature and later develop the awareness of nature-human-culture interactions through the on-hands participatory fieldworks with local communities. Fieldworks were divided in two main parts; biodiversity experience with nature activities (NA) to increase the sense of belongings to the nature, by using five senses; visual (seeing), auditory (hearing), tactile (touching), gustatory (tasting), and olfactory (smelling) in three different ecosystems; marine, forest and mountain areas. The second part was cultural diversity fieldworks with rural communities (RC) to understand the nature-human-culture interactions. The survey, was conducted twice, before the fieldworks to evaluate the overall environmental awareness, knowledge, and attitude, and after the fieldworks, together with the reports submission. Results showed that NA helped students to understand the rural communities more deeply (96%) and they became more concerned about its future (95%). Before visiting the rural communities only 39% showed an interest in volunteering in the community, however after the NA and on-hands experiences with local people 95% showed the willingness to volunteer and help local people. This study suggest about the importance of fieldworks to educate the sense of unity with rural environment and recognizing the local issues. Students became more concerned about the regional issues and evoked the willingness to volunteer in the regions and contribute for the sustainable regional development.

Teaching a graduate course focused on critical understandings of interculturality offers an opportune space in which to explore decolonizing pedagogical practices. In this short paper, I examine my own attempts at decolonizing students' experiences of intercultural learning by incorporating non-Western knowledge systems to draw attention to dominant cultural perceptions, authority structures, and power relations. Using extracts of students' texts and multimodal representations of cultural discourses, I focus on four 'moments' of intercultural learning: (1) the importance of connecting to history on one's own terms; (2) how knowledge and experience shape our relationship to the land; (3) the need for uncomfortable and vulnerable spaces as potentially facilitating anti-racist/decolonial pedagogy; and (4) the tensions around cultural appropriation in relation to teaching resources. In sharing these practical realizations of teaching in higher education I hope to contribute to the larger discussion of the possibilities and challenges of a decolonizing praxis.

Citizen science projects are an increasingly popular way to engage the public in the process of science. However, few studies have evaluated learning outcomes beyond knowledge gains in formal learning settings with youth. This study evaluated the effects of a classroom-based citizen science project in which middle and high school students collected data about hummingbirds and their habitat use as part of a long-term study on declining hummingbird populations. We explored changes in science identity, nature connectedness, and knowledge of curricular material using quantitative pre- and post-test questionnaires (n = 367). While curricular knowledge scores increased modestly, the project had no meaningful impacts on science identity or nature connectedness. Nevertheless, students reported that the citizen science aspect motivated them and made them feel that they were contributing to science. Results suggest that, while citizen science has potential as an effective mode for educating students about the processes and content of science, one should not assume that it necessarily conveys additional benefits.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/13504622.2021.1927990 .

Purpose: The University of Michigan (U-M) is planning its course toward carbon neutrality. A key component in U-M carbon accounting is the calculation of carbon sinks via estimation of carbon storage and biosequestration on U-M landholdings. Here, this paper aims to compare multiple remote sensing methods across U-M natural lands and urban campuses to determine the accurate and efficient protocol for land assessment and ecosystem service valuation that other institutions may scale as relevant. Design/methodology/approach: This paper tested three remote sensing methods to determine land use and land cover (LULC), namely, unsupervised classification, supervised classification and supervised classification incorporating delineated wetlands. Using confusion matrices, this paper tested remote sensing approaches to ground-truthed data, the paper obtained via field-based vegetation surveys across a subset of U-M landholdings. Findings: In natural areas, supervised classification incorporating delineated wetlands was the most accurate and efficient approach. In urban settings, maps incorporating institutional knowledge and campus tree surveys better estimated LULC. Using LULC and literature-based carbon data, this paper estimated that U-M lands store 1.37-3.68 million metric tons of carbon and sequester 45,000-86,000 Mt CO2e/yr, valued at $2.2m-$4.3m annually ($50/metric ton, social cost of carbon). Originality/value: This paper compared methods to identify an efficient and accurate remote sensing methodology to identify LULC and estimate carbon storage, biosequestration rates and economic values of ecosystem services provided.
