12. Home range of immature green turtles tracked at an offshore tropical reef using automated passive acoustic technology

Abstract

Seventeen immature green turtles Chelonia mydas were tracked concurrently by automated ultrasonic receivers at a coral reef off North-Eastern Australia (September-December 2010, 16.4°S, 145.6°E). The majority (n = 11) were tracked for the entire 100-day study, the remainder for 23-85 days. Detection data aggregated at 30-min intervals produced median 6.5-35 daily locations for individual turtles. Home range areas (95 % utilisation distribution) were ≤1 [km.sup.2], [bar.x] ± SD = 0.74 km2 ± 0.159. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first home range estimates for C. mydas foraging at offshore tropical reefs. The findings are important for conservation in revealing near-continuous presence of the same individuals within a small geographic area. Abstract

ThisWorking Group aimed to provide robust science to inform sustainable koala conservation and management. The group consisted of key koala researchers from all states in eastern Australia where koalas occur. The objective was to share data and knowledge on regional koala population estimates and current and emerging trends in those populations. Over the course of two workshops (February and June 2012), these data and expert knowledge were synthesised to answer the following questions: (i) what are the population trends in koalas and how do these vary regionally? (ii) what are the drivers of these trends and how do these drivers interact spatially and temporally? and (iii) what actions will be the most effective in dealing with data integration and population decline issues identified in (i) and (ii)? The outcome of the two workshops was a bioregional synthesis of the distribution and abundance of koalas, population declines over three generations (for the past 15-21 years and the next 15-21 years) and a summary of major threats to koalas. This followed the IUCN Red List criteria (IUCN 2001).

27. Summer Survey Of Dugong Distribution and Abundance in Shark Bay Reveals Additional Key Habitat Area

Abstract

The first standardised summer aerial survey of dugongs within Shark Bay in Western Australia, and the fourth in a series of surveys of this area, was undertaken during February 2002. This survey returned a population estimate of 11021 ± 1357 (s.e.), a result similar to the first two winter surveys in 1989 and 1994 but considerably lower than the 1999 survey. Distribution was markedly different in this survey compared with all previous surveys, which were conducted during winter, confirming that dugongs within Shark Bay undertake a seasonal migration driven by changes in sea surface temperature. In addition to this distribution pattern it was identified that 24% of the population during summer occurred within an area known as Henri Freycinet Harbour. That is, while dugongs have been reported in this south-western region of the bay previously in summer, this is the first time that the substantial size (2629 ± 780, s.e.) of the summer dugong population has been quantified. Differences in the population estimate between the 1999 survey and this survey may be explained through large-scale movement patterns of dugongs between Shark Bay and Ningaloo Reef and Exmouth Gulf to the north, patterns that should be considered in the management of dugongs for the entire region.

48. Ecological Example of Conditioned Flavor Aversion in Plant–Herbivore Interactions: Effect of Terpenes of EucalyptusLeaves on Feeding by Common Ringtail and Brushtail Possums

Abstract

We investigated the hypothesis that feeding deterrence of common ringtail possums (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) and common brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) by Eucalyptusterpenes (in this case 1,8-cineole) is a result of a conditioned flavor aversion (CFA), due to the association of terpenes with postingestive effects of another group of Eucalyptustoxins, the diformylphloroglucinol compounds (DFPCs). Wild-caught common ringtail and common brushtail possums showed a dose-dependent reduction in food intake when 1,8-cineole was added to the diet. However, after continued exposure over 12 days to increasing amounts of cineole in the diet, both species substantially increased their intakes of cineole relative to control animals. This indicated that the aversion to cineole was a conditioned response rather than a physiological limitation in their ability to detoxify terpenes. Subsequent exposure to a diet including both cineole and jensenone (a simple DFPC also found in Eucalyptusand considered to cause postingestive emesis) in corresponding amounts was able to recondition the dose-dependent aversion. Consequently, animals that had been given jensenone showed an aversion to cineole-rich diets that matched the behavior of animals in the control group. This supported our hypothesis that the effect of terpenes on feeding of these marsupial folivores on Eucalyptusis due to a CFA. Possums can cope with levels of terpenes in the diet that far exceed those occurring naturally. The role of terpenes in marsupial folivore–Eucalyptusinteractions appears to be to act as a cue to levels of toxic DFPCs in the leaves, rather than acting as toxins in their own right.

49. Relationship Between Chemical Functional Groups on EucalyptusSecondary Metabolites and their Effectiveness as Marsupial Antifeedants

Abstract

Eucalyptusdisplays strong intraspecific variation in resistance to browsing by marsupial folivores that can be attributed to variation in the concentration and type of diformylphloroglucinol compounds (DFPCs) in the foliage. In this study, we ask which functional groups of diformylphloroglucinol compounds determine their effectiveness in deterring feeding. We used a simple and highly deterrent compound, jensenone, as a model DFPC and compared its activity to structural variants that differ in the types of functional groups on the phloroglucinol molecule. Torquatone, a naturally occurring compound in the steam volatile fraction of Eucalyptus torquatafoliage, has neither the aldehyde nor phenol groups that are believed to contribute to the antifeedant actions of jensenone. From the naturally occurring compounds we have synthesized two intermediates, a capped phenol/free aldehyde compound (acetyl-jensenone) and a free phenol/no aldehyde compound (demethyl-torquatone). Addition of jensenone and acetyl-jensenone to diets of common ringtail possums (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) substantially reduced their food intakes. Torquatone showed less activity, and there was little reduction in food intake when demethyl-torquatone was added to the diet. We conclude that at least the aldehyde groups attached to the aromatic nucleus are important in determining whether these compounds deter feeding by common ringtail possums, whereas the phenol groups may play only a minor role.
