A new line list for H$_2$$^{16}$O is presented. This line list, which is called POKAZATEL, includes transitions between rotation-vibrational energy levels up to 41000 cm$^{-1}$ in energy and is the most complete to date. The potential energy surface (PES) used for producing the line list was obtained by fitting a high-quality ab initio PES to experimental energy levels with energies of 41000 cm$^{-1}$ and for rotational excitations up to $J=5$. The final line list comprises all energy levels up to 41000 cm$^{-1}$ and rotational angular momentum $J$ up to 72. An accurate ab initio dipole moment surface (DMS) was used for the calculation of line intensities and reproduces high-precision experimental intensity data with an accuracy close to 1 %. The final line list uses empirical energy levels whenever they are available, to ensure that line positions are reproduced as accurately as possible. The POKAZATEL line list contains over 5 billion transitions and is available from the ExoMol website (www.exomol.com) and the CDS database.

A new line list for AlH is produced. The WYLLoT line list spans two electronic states $X\,{}^1\Sigma^+$ and $A\,{}^1\Pi$. A diabatic model is used to model the shallow potential energy curve of the $A\,{}^1\Pi$ state, which has a strong pre-dissociative character with only two bound vibrational states. Both potential energy curves are empirical and were obtained by fitting to experimentally derived energies of the $X\,{}^1\Sigma^+$ and $A\,{}^1\Pi$ electronic states using the diatomic nuclear motion codes Level and Duo. High temperature line lists plus partition functions and lifetimes for three isotopologues $^{27}$AlH, $^{27}$AlD and $^{26}$AlH were generated using ab initio dipole moments. The line lists cover both the $X$--$X$ and $A$--$X$ systems and are made available in electronic form at the CDS and ExoMol databases.

Line lists for the sulphur-containing molecules SH (the mercapto radical) and NS are computed as part of the ExoMol project. These line lists consider transitions within the $X$ ${}^2\Pi$ ground state for $^{32}$SH, $^{33}$SH, $^{34}$SH and $^{\text{32}}$SD, and $^{14}$N$^{32}$S, $^{14}$N$^{33}$S, $^{14}$N$^{34}$S, $^{14}$N$^{36}$S and $^{15}$N$^{32}$S. Ab initio potential energy (PEC) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) curves are computed and then improved by fitting to experimentally observed transitions. Fully ab initio dipole moment curves (DMCs) computed at high level of theory are used to produce the final line lists. For SH, our fit gives a root-mean-square (rms) error of 0.03 cm$^{-1}$ between the observed ($v_{\rm max}=4$, $J_{\rm max} = 34.5$) and calculated transitions wavenumbers; this is extrapolated such that all $X$ $^2\Pi$ rotational-vibrational-electronic (rovibronic) bound states are considered. For $^{\text{32}}$SH the resulting line list contains about 81000 transitions and 2300 rovibronic states, considering levels up to $v_{\rm max} = 14$ and $J_{\rm max} = 60.5$. For NS the refinement used a combination of experimentally determined frequencies and energy levels and led to an rms fitting error of 0.002 cm$^{-1}$. Each NS calculated line list includes around 2.8 million transitions and 31000 rovibronic states with a vibrational range up to $v=53$ and rotational range to $J=235.5$, which covers up to 23000 cm$^{-1}$. Both line lists should be complete for temperatures up to 5000 K. Example spectra simulated using this line list are shown and comparisons made to the existing data in the CDMS database. Monitoring ozone concentrations in the Earth's atmosphere using spectroscopic methods is a major activity which undertaken both from the ground and from space. However there are long-running issues of consistency between measurements made at infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. In addition, key O$_3$ IR bands at 10 \muu, 5 \muu\ and 3 \muu\ also yield results which differ by a few percent when used for retrievals. These problems stem from the underlying laboratory measurements of the line intensities. Here we use quantum chemical techniques, first principles electronic structure and variational nuclear-motion calculations, to address this problem. A new high-accuracy \ai\ dipole moment surface (DMS) is computed. Several spectroscopically-determined potential energy surfaces (PESs) are constructed by fitting to empirical energy levels in the region below 7000 \cm\ starting from an \ai\ PES. Nuclear motion calculations using these new surfaces allow the unambiguous determination of the intensities of 10 \muu\ band transitions, and the computation of the intensities of 10 \muu\ and 5 \muu\ bands within their experimental error. A decrease in intensities within the 3 \muu\ is predicted which appears consistent with atmospheric retrievals. The PES and DMS form a suitable starting point both for the computation of comprehensive ozone line lists and for future calculations of electronic transition intensities, Comment: 36 pages, 1 figure, 5 tables

SiH has long been observed in the spectrum of our Sun and other cool stars. Computed line lists for the main isotopologues of silicon monohydride, $^{28}$SiH, $^{29}$SiH, $^{30}$SiH and $^{28}$SiD are presented. These line lists consider rotation-vibration transitions within the ground $X$ $^{2}\Pi$ electronic state as well as transitions to the low-lying $A$ $^{2}\Delta$ and $a$ $^{4}\Sigma^-$ states. Ab initio potential energy (PECs) and dipole moment curves (DMCs) along with spin-orbit and electronic-angular-momentum couplings between them are calculated using the MRCI level of theory with the MOLPRO package. The PEC for the ground X $^2\Pi$ state is refined to available experimental data with a typical accuracy of around 0.01 cm$^{-1}$ or better. The $^{28}$SiH line list includes 11,785 rovibronic states and 1,724,841 transitions with associated Einstein-A coefficients for angular momentum $J$ up to $82.5$ and covering wavenumbers up to 31340 cm$^{-1}$ ($\lambda$ $<$ 0.319 $\mu$m). Spectra are simulated using the new line list and comparisons made with various experimental spectra. These line lists are applicable up to temperatures of ~5000 K, making them relevant to astrophysical objects such as exoplanetary atmospheres and cool stars and opening up the possibility of detection in the interstellar medium. These line lists are available at the ExoMol www.exomol.com and CDS database websites.

Comprehensive line lists for phosphorus monoxide ($^{31}$P$^{16}$O) and phosphorus monosulphide ($^{31}$P$^{32}$S) in their $X$ $^2\Pi$ electronic ground state are presented. The line lists are based on new ab initio potential energy (PEC), spin-orbit (SOC) and dipole moment (DMC) curves computed using the MRCI+Q-r method with aug-cc-pwCV5Z and aug-cc-pV5Z basis sets. The nuclear motion equations (i.e. the rovibronic Schr\"odinger equations for each molecule) are solved using the program Duo. The PECs and SOCs are refined in least-squares fits to available experimental data. Partition functions, $Q(T)$, are computed up to $T=$ 5000 K, the range of validity of the line lists. These line lists are the most comprehensive available for either molecule. The characteristically sharp peak of the $Q$-branches from the spin-orbit split components give useful diagnostics for both PO and PS in spectra at infrared wavelengths. These line lists should prove useful for analysing observations and setting up models of environments such as brown dwarfs, low-mass stars, O-rich circumstellar regions and potentially for exoplanetary retrievals. Since PS is yet to be detected in space, the role of the two lowest excited electronic states ($a$ $^4\Pi$ and $B$ $^2\Pi$) are also considered. An approximate line list for the PS $X - B$ electronic transition, which predicts a number of sharp vibrational bands in the near ultraviolet, is also presented. he line lists are available from the CDS (cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr) and ExoMol (www.exomol.com) databases., Comment: MNRAS (2017)

H$_3^+$ is a ubiquitous and important astronomical species whose spectrum has been observed in the interstellar medium, planets and tentatively in the remnants of supernova SN1897a. Its role as a cooler is important for gas giant planets and exoplanets, and possibly the early Universe. All this makes the spectral properties, cooling function and partition function of H$_3^+$ key parameters for astronomical models and analysis. A new high-accuracy, very extensive line list for H$_3^+$ called MiZATeP was computed as part of the ExoMol project alongside a temperature-dependent cooling function and partition function as well as lifetimes for %individual excited states. Hot line lists for two isotopologues of water, \octo\ and \heto, are presented. The calculations employ newly constructed potential energy surfaces (PES) which take advantage of a novel method for using the large set of experimental energy levels for \hato\ to give high quality predictions for \octo\ and \heto. This procedure greatly extends the energy range for which a PES can be accurately determined, allowing accurate prediction of higher-lying energy levels than are currently known from direct laboratory measurements. This PES is combined with a high-accuracy, {\it ab initio} dipole moment surface of water in the computation of all energy levels, transition frequencies and associated Einstein A coefficients for states with rotational excitation up to $J=50$ and energies up to 30~000 \cm. The resulting HotWat78 line lists complement the well-used BT2 \hato\ line list (Barber et.al, 2006, MNRAS, {\bf 368}, 1087). Full line lists are made available in the electronic form as supplementary data to this article and at \url{www.exomol.com}.

Remote sensing experiments require high-accuracy, preferably sub-percent, line intensities and in response to this need we present computed room temperature line lists for six symmetric isotopologues of carbon dioxide: $^{13}$C$^{16}$O$_2$, $^{14}$C$^{16}$O$_2$, $^{12}$C$^{17}$O$_2$, $^{12}$C$^{18}$O$_2$, $^{13}$C$^{17}$O$_2$ and $^{13}$C$^{18}$O$_2$, covering the range 0-8000 \cm. Our calculation scheme is based on variational nuclear motion calculations and on a reliability analysis of the generated line intensities. Rotation-vibration wavefunctions and energy levels are computed using the DVR3D software suite and a high quality semi-empirical potential energy surface (PES), followed by computation of intensities using an \abinitio\ dipole moment surface (DMS). Four line lists are computed for each isotopologue to quantify sensitivity to minor distortions of the PES/DMS. Reliable lines are benchmarked against recent state-of-the-art measurements and against the HITRAN2012 database, supporting the claim that the majority of line intensities for strong bands are predicted with sub-percent accuracy. Accurate line positions are generated using an effective Hamiltonian. We recommend the use of these line lists for future remote sensing studies and their inclusion in databases.

The spectra (rotational, rotation-vibrational or electronic) of diatomic molecules due to transitions involving only closed-shell ($^1\Sigma$) electronic states follow very regular, simple patterns and their theoretical analysis is usually straightforward. On the other hand, open-shell electronic states lead to more complicated spectral patterns and, moreover, often appear as a manifold of closely lying electronic states, leading to perturbations with even larger complexity. This is especially true when at least one of the atoms is a transition metal. Traditionally these complex cases have been analysed using approaches based on perturbation theory, with semi-empirical parameters determined by fitting to spectral data. Recently the needs of two rather diverse scientific areas have driven the demand for improved theoretical models of open-shell diatomic systems based on an \emph{ab initio} approach, these areas are ultracold chemistry and the astrophysics of "cool" stars, brown dwarfs and most recently extrasolar planets. However, the complex electronic structure of these molecules combined with the accuracy requirements of high-resolution spectroscopy render such an approach particularly challenging. This review describes recent progress in developing methods for directly solving the effective Schr\"odinger equation for open-shell diatomic molecules, with a focus on molecules containing a transtion metal. It considers four aspects of the problem: 1. The electronic structure problem, 2. Non-perturbative treatments of the curve couplings, 3. The solution of the nuclear motion Schr\"odinger equation, 4. The generation of accurate electric dipole transition intensities. Examples of applications are used to illustrate these issues., Comment: Topical Review

The ExoMol database (www.exomol.com) provides extensive line lists of molecular transitions which are valid over extended temperatures ranges. The status of the current release of the database is reviewed and a new data structure is specified. This structure augments the provision of energy levels (and hence transition frequencies) and Einstein $A$ coefficients with other key properties, including lifetimes of individual states, temperature-dependent cooling functions, Land\'e $g$-factors, partition functions, cross sections, $k$-coefficients and transition dipoles with phase relations. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of pressure broadening parameters. The new data structure includes a definition file which provides the necessary information for utilities accessing ExoMol through its application programming interface (API). Duo is a general, user-friendly program for computing rotational, rovibrational and rovibronic spectra of diatomic molecules. Duo solves the Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the motion of the nuclei not only for the simple case of uncoupled, isolated electronic states (typical for the ground state of closed-shell diatomics) but also for the general case of an arbitrary number and type of couplings between electronic states (typical for open-shell diatomics and excited states). Possible couplings include spin-orbit, angular momenta, spin-rotational and spin-spin. Corrections due to non-adiabatic effects can be accounted for by introducing the relevant couplings using so-called Born-Oppenheimer breakdown curves. Duo requires user-specified potential energy curves and, if relevant, dipole moment, coupling and correction curves. From these it computes energy levels, line positions and line intensities. Several analytic forms plus interpolation and extrapolation options are available for representation of the curves. Duo can refine potential energy and coupling curves to best reproduce reference data such as experimental energy levels or line positions. Duo is provided as a Fortran 2003 program and has been tested under a variety of operating systems.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations are being closely monitored by remote sensing experiments which rely on knowing line intensities with an uncertainty of 0.5% or better. We report a theoretical study providing rotation-vibration line intensities substantially within the required accuracy based on the use of a highly accurate {\it ab initio} dipole moment surface (DMS). The theoretical model developed is used to compute CO$_2$ intensities with uncertainty estimates informed by cross comparing line lists calculated using pairs of potential energy surfaces (PES) and DMS's of similar high quality. This yields lines sensitivities which are utilized in reliability analysis of our results. The final outcome is compared to recent accurate measurements as well as the HITRAN2012 database. Transition frequencies are obtained from effective Hamiltonian calculations to produce a comprehensive line list covering all $^{12}$C$^{16}$O$_2$ transitions below 8000 cm$^{-1}$ and stronger than 10$^{-30}$ cm / molecule at $T=296$~K

Atmospheric CO$_2$ concentrations are being closely monitored by remote sensing experiments which rely on knowing line intensities with an uncertainty of 0.5\%\ or better. Most available laboratory measurements have uncertainties much larger than this. We report a joint experimental and theoretical study providing rotation-vibration line intensities with the required accuracy. Accurate and complete rotational, rotational-vibrational and rotational-vibrational-electronic line lists are calculated for sodium hydride: both the NaH and NaD isotopologues are considered. These line lists cover all ro-vibrational states of the ground ($X$~$^1\Sigma^+$) and first excited ($A$~$^1\Sigma^+$) electronic states. The calculations use available spectroscopically-determined potential energy curves and new high-quality, \textit{ab initio} dipole moment curves. Partition functions for both isotopologues are calculated and the effect of quasibound states is considered. The resulting line lists are suitable for temperatures up to about 7000~K and are designed for studies of exoplanet atmospheres, brown dwarfs and cool stars. In particular, the NaH $A-X$ band is found to show a broad absorption feature at about 385 nm which should provide a signature for the molecule. The electronic structure of six low-lying electronic states of scandium hydride, $X\,{}^{1}\Sigma^+$, $a\,{}^{3}\Delta$, $b\,{}^{3}\Pi$, $A\,{}^{1}\Delta$ $c\,{}^{3}\Sigma^+$, and $B\,{}^{1}\Pi$, is studied using multi-reference configuration interaction as a function of bond length. Diagonal and off-diagonal dipole moment, spin-orbit coupling and electronic angular momentum curves are also computed. The results are benchmarked against experimental measurements and calculations on atomic scandium. The resulting curves are used to compute a line list of molecular ro-vibronic transitions for $^{45}$ScH., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, 9 tables In press

Accurate rotational-vibrational line lists for $^{31}$P$^{14}$N and $^{31}$P$^{15}$N in their ground electronic states are computed. The line lists are produced using an empirical potential energy curve obtained by fitting to the experimental transition frequencies available in the literature in conjunction with an accurate, high level \textit{ab initio} dipole moment curve. In these calculations the programs DPotFit and LEVEL~8.0 were used. The new line lists reproduce the experimental wavenumbers with a root-mean-square error of 0.004~cm$^{-1}$. The line lists cover the frequency range 0--51000 cm$^{-1}$, contain almost 700~000 lines each and extend up to a maximum vibrational level of $v$=66 and a maximum rotational level of $J$=357. They should be applicable for a large range of temperature up to, at least, 5000~K. These new line lists are used to simulate spectra for PN at a range of temperatures and are deposited in the Strasbourg data centre. A quantum electrodynamics (QED) correction surface for the simplest polyatomic and polyelectronic system H$_3^+$ is computed using an approximate procedure. This surface is used to calculate the shifts to vibration-rotation energy levels due to QED; such shifts have a magnitude of up to 0.25 cm$^{-1}$ for vibrational levels up to 15~000 cm$^{-1}$ and are expected to have an accuracy of about 0.02 cm$^{-1}$. Combining the new H$_3^+$ QED correction surface with existing highly accurate Born-Oppenheimer (BO), relativistic and adiabatic components suggests that deviations of the resulting {\it ab initio} energy levels from observed ones are largely due to non-adiabatic effects.

Cooling of primordial gas plays a crucial role in the birth of the first structures in our Universe. Due to the low fractional abundance of molecular species at high redshifts, spontaneous emission rather than collisions represents the most efficient way to cool the pristine plasma. In the present work, radiative cooling functions are evaluated for the diatomic species HD, HD$^+$, HeH$^+$, LiH and LiH$^+$. Cooling functions for the triatomic ions H$_3^+$ and H$_2$D$^+$ are also considered. Analytic fits as functions of temperature are provided., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, 1 table
