The existing characteristics of the wireless networks nowadays, urgently impose the exploitation of flexible networking solutions that will offer increased efficiency in resource utilization and application Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning and at the same time will reduce the energy consumption and achieve green targets. In this respect, Operator-governed Opportunistic Networks (ONs), which are dynamically created, temporary, coordinated extensions of the infrastructure, are the basic constituents in the proposed approach. In addition, Cognitive Management Systems (CMSs), which comprise self-management and learning capabilities, can be exploited for ensuring fast and reliable establishment of ONs, achieving efficiently the desired goals. This paper presents the concept of ONs and their representative scenarios, as well as an evaluation of indicative test cases as a proof of concept of the aforementioned approach. Indicative simulation results are presented, which yield the conditions in which the adoption of such a solution can lead to lower costs and management decisions with a "greener" footprint.

To further elaborate on the information exchange, this eliverable will introduce a preliminary state machine as well as information exchange strategies as they are envisaged in the OneFIT project.

Deliverable D5.1 del projecte Europeu OneFIT (ICT-2009-257385) The present deliverable introduces the OneFIT Proof-of-Concept (PoC) Architecture which will be used as a basis for the validation platform development throughout the project. This PoC Architecture proposal is validated by identifying the roles of the various components in the framework of the OneFIT Scenarios as derived and detailed in WP2. The applied methodology ensures that all required features are appropriately considered. Furthermore, the hardware components available to the project are detailed which are the basis for the development of an integrated validation platform. Their role is highlighted by an instantiation step which maps the PoC Architecture components to the identified hardware components. Finally, a scenario instantiation is derived which illustrates the role of the various hardware components for the validation of selected OneFIT scenarios.

The purpose of this deliverable is to define information to be exchanged in OneFIT system based on algorithms for the management of pportunistic networks and to design message sequence charts describing the signalling flows for supporting the management of opportunistic network. Due to the need for supporting diversified applications with vastly expanded use of wireless access, the Future Internet (FI) will set the networks under stress for resources. This motivates the quest for Quality of Service (QoS), through technologies that achieve higher utilization of resources and lower transmission powers and energy consumption. The goat of this paper is to present and validate a solution that achieves these targets, and thus, creates important value-adding opportunities for both the user and the wireless industry. The proposed solution considers the possibility of extending the infrastructure-based Composite Wireless Network (CWN), which is owned by a wireless operator and consists of a set of radio access networks, by network elements and devices that are organized in an infrastructure-less manner. The decision of the CWN to create or not such an infrastructure-less network will be dynamic, should respect traffic, energy and mobility aspects and should also envisage anticipated QoS related benefits for the whole network. Framed within this statement, this paper aims at recommending whether and when the creation of such an infrastructure-less network(s) will be beneficiary for the overall network as an extension to a CWN. For that reason, extensive simulations were conducted so as to cover a large gamut of test cases, thus increasing the validity of the extracted recommendations. Simulation results reveal that there exist specific suitability criteria under which the creation of infrastructure-less networks can be recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
