Abstract

The Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs), thanks to their large apertures and cutting-edge Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) systems, promise to deliver sharper and deeper data even than the JWST. SHARP is a concept study for a near-IR (0.95-2.45 $\mu$m) spectrograph conceived to fully exploit the collecting area and the angular resolution of the upcoming generation of ELTs. In particular, SHARP is designed for the 2nd port of MORFEO@ELT. Composed of a Multi-Object Spectrograph, NEXUS, and a multi-Integral Field Unit, VESPER, MORFEO-SHARP will deliver high angular ($\sim$30 mas) and spectral (R$\simeq$300, 2000, 6000, 17000) resolution, outperforming NIRSpec@JWST (100 mas). SHARP will enable studies of the nearby Universe and the early Universe in unprecedented detail. NEXUS is fed by a configurable slit system deploying up to 30 slits with $\sim$2.4 arcsec length and adjustable width, over a field of about 1.2"$\times$1.2" (35 mas/pix). Each slit is fed by an inversion prism able to rotate by an arbitrary angle the field that can be seen by the slit. VESPER is composed of 12 probes of 1.7"$\times$1.5" each (spaxel 31 mas) probing a field 24"$\times$70". SHARP is conceived to exploit the ELTs apertures reaching the faintest flux and the sharpest angular resolution by joining the sensitivity of NEXUS and the high spatial sampling of VESPER to MORFEO capabilities. 2. Galaxy fields of LISA massive black hole mergers in a simulated universe

Abstract

Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will extend the search for gravitational waves (GWs) at 0.1 − 100 mHz where loud signals from coalescing binary black holes of 104 − 107 M are expected. Depending on their mass and luminosity distance, the uncertainty in the LISA sky-localization decreases from hundreds of deg2 during the inspiral phase to fractions of a deg2 after the merger. By using the semi-analytical model L-Galaxies applied to the Millennium-I merger trees, we generate a simulated universe to identify the hosts of z ≤ 3 coalescing binaries with total mass of 3 × 105, 3 × 106, and 3 × 107 M, and varying mass ratio. We find that, even at the time of merger, the number of galaxies around the LISA sources is too large (<~ 102) to allow direct host identification. However, if an X-ray counterpart is associated to the GW sources at z < 1, all LISA fields at merger are populated by <~ 10 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) emitting above ∼ 10−17 erg cm−2 s−1. For sources at higher redshifts, the poorer sky-localization causes this number to increase up to ∼ 103. Archival data from eRosita will allow discarding ∼ 10 per cent of these AGNs, being too shallow to detect the dim X-ray luminosity of the GW sources. Inspiralling binaries in an active phase with masses <~ 106 M at z ≤ 0.3 can be detected, as early as 10 h before the merger, by future X-ray observatories in less than a few minutes. For these systems, <~ 10 AGNs are within the LISA sky-localization area. Finally, the LISA-Taiji network would guarantee the identification of an X-ray counterpart 10 h before merger for all binaries at z <~ 1.

Abstract

A growing number of research works, experiments and applications is investigating the potential at the intersection of augmented reality (AR) and the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. Project management, project communication, collaborative design, maintenance and construction progress documentation, construction site safety, and training are some of the cases that can benefit from blending real and virtual views through mobile devices. In recent years, research also highlighted how mixed reality and building information modeling (BIM) could cooperate to provide effective communication between multiple agents and closer interaction between digital information and the building site. Nevertheless, consolidated applications in these fields are still limited, especially when compared to other areas of AR adoption. This paper presents the development of an AR-based mobile app for exploring telecommunications tower sites and interacting with a related BIM database. The project aims to provide easy-to-use tools to maintain both the physical assets and an up-to-date model. We discuss critical issues in developing a scalable and interoperable application, supporting the feasibility study of similar solutions in the AEC sector.

Abstract

A follow-up of 21 months was conducted in order to evaluate the efficacy of vaccination against Hepatitis B Virus in a group of 54 children (age 2-14) belonging to family cluster characterized by the presence of HBsAg healthy carriers. HB-VAX, plasma-derived, and Engerix B, by a recombinant DNA technique, were both employed and administered with the following schedule: three doses of 0, 1 and 6 months. Out of 54 subjects, 48 completed the follow-up. These children all presented a good immune response as assessed at 1 and 12 months after the last administration. The results obtained show that this vaccination, free from side effects, is the most efficacious and safest tool to control the spread of Hepatitis B Virus infection and its complications at short and long term, especially when carried out on a large scale.
