Margyricarpus pinnatus is a poorly understood entity from natural grasslands of South America that it better considered as a species complex. In this work we contribute to the advancement of the taxonomic knowledge of this challenging species complex by describing two new species of Margyricarpus from southern Brazil. We present field photographs, illustrations, a distribution map and ecologic and conservation notes on the new species.

We describe a narrowly endemic new species of Delairea from the highlands of southern Brazil. It is the second species described in this previously monospecific genus that was endemic to Africa, and the first record of a native species of Delairea in the Americas. Delairea aparadensis differs from D. odorata by its deltoid leaves and capitulescences composed by cymes of 2–6 capitula. Additionally, the new species is classified as critically endangered using the IUCN criteria.

Sericographis cordifolia is reinstated and a new combination Justicia cordifolia is proposed when transferred to Justicia. Additionally, a detailed morphologic description for this species, field photographs, taxonomic and nomenclatural comments, and species conservation status assessed according to IUCN criteria are provided.

—Lysimachia is a genus that was recently recircumscribed and greatly enlarged by the inclusion of many genera in the Primulaceae. In this work five new species, all endemic from the grasslands of southern Brazil, are described, two new combinations are proposed, and 10 typifications are effected. The preliminary conservation status of these species are assessed, and we also provide field photographs and distribution maps. Furthermore, we provide an identification key to all species of Lysimachia that occur in Brazil.

A new species of Persicaria, P. humboldtiana, endemic to a narrow area of waterfalls in Corupá, southern Brazil, is described in the present paper. The locus classicus of the new species is well-known for plant endemisms. A complete morphological description, original pictures, a distribution map, and a morphological comparison with the similar Eurasian species P. minor (≡ Polygonum minus) are given. The name Polygonum minus is lecto- and epitypified on, respectively, a Morison’s illustration and a specimen preserved at BM.

In this work we present taxonomic notes for the genus Erechtites. More specifically, we present evidence for the re-establishment of E. petiolatus, a species that was hitherto being considered as a synonym of either E. valerianifolius or E. valerianifolius f. prenanthoides. Thus, we raise to six the number of accepted species of Erechtites. We present field photographs of E. petiolatus and E. valerianifolius and assess the conservation status of these species. Furthermore, we present taxonomic notes for E. valerianifolius and Senecio prenanthoides.

In this work we describe Ludwigia humboldtiana, an extremely narrowly endemic new species from a waterfall system in Corupá municipality, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. This is already the second plant species endemic to the area. The new species is morphologically most similar to L. caparosa, L. elegans, L. multinervia and L. peruviana but differs from those by a series of taxonomically important characters. We present field photographs, a distribution map and a detailed morphological account of the new species, discuss its morphology and taxonomy in relation to the morphologically most similar other species of Ludwigia, and assess its conservation status according to IUCN criteria.

We present here novelties and notes on Tradescantia from Brazil. More specifically, we describe a narrowly endemic new species from southern Brazil (T. insularis), create a new name at the species rank (T. catharinensis) for T. crassula var. gaudichaudii, discuss the taxonomy of T. schwirkowskiana and T. serrana, and lectotypify T. tenella and present the first record of this species in the Southeast Region of Brazil. Finally, we provide an identification key to Tradescantia in Brazil.

In a recently-published work it was demonstrated that the previous circumscription of Erechtites valerianifolius encompassed two distinct species, thus calling for the re-establishment of E. petiolatus. However, in that work it was overlooked that Senecio albiflorus, a replacement name for Cacalia prenanthoides, was published three months before E. petiolatus. In the present work we make the necessary amendments to the taxonomic treatment of this species of Erechtites due to this nomenclatural oversight. We also discuss the issue of the provenance of the type of C. prenanthoides.

We describe here Begonia medeiroii, a narrow endemic species from the Atlantic Rainforest. The conservation status of this species was assessed as critically endangered according to IUCN criteria. This species resembles to B. catharinensis and B. hirtella in some characteristics, differing among other features due the presence of adventitious vegetative buds on the adaxial surface of the leaves.

Here we describe a new species of Prosopanche from southern Brazil. This is the first report of Prosopanche in Santa Catarina state and for the Atlantic Forest region. We present field photographs, illustrations, ecologic and conservation comments on the new species. We contrast the morphology of the new species with the other Prosopanche species that occur in Brazil, P. bonacinai and P. caatinguicola. The new species is morphologically similar to P. bonacinai, which has anthers composed by 20–30 thecae, synandrium 15–25 × 6–8 mm and tepals 35–55 × 9–20 mm vs. anthers composed by 3–4 thecae, synandrium 5–6 × 3–4 mm and tepals 15–20 × 5–8 mm in P. demogorgoni.

We describe here Begonia ciliatifolia, a new species from Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. We treat the species as a member of Begonia sect. Pritzelia, and discuss its differences to related species. Due the species small area of occurrence and the very specific habitat, the new species is assessed as critically endangered according to IUCN criteria. Additionally, we present a distribution map, field photographs and a key to the species of Begonia with peltate leaves and corniculate fruits of South Region of Brazil.

Alysicarpus ovalifolius (Schumach. & Thonn.) J. Leonard is a legume species used as forage plant, which is originally native to Africa but today has a pantropical distribution. This species is probably expanding its distribution in the neotropics and therefore can be considered a potentially invasive species. In Brazil, the only species of Alysicarpus Neck. ex Desv. hitherto recorded was A. vaginalis (L.) DC., which is also non-native in the Americas. This study presents the fi rst account of the occurrence and distribution of A. ovalifolius in Brazil, including notes on its taxonomic status and potential invasiveness. Brazilian specimens of A. ovalifolius had been so far misidentifi ed as A. vaginalis. We also present here the fi rst records of the genus Alysicarpus in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, and provide an identifi cation key to the two species of Alysicarpus that occur in Brazil.

The flora of Santa Catarina is the best known in Brazil, and yet considerable knowledge gaps remain. Aiming at filling these gaps, we present here 55 new records of vascular plants for this Brazilian state, and the re-collection of four species after more than 50 years. About 50% of new records are non-native in the area. We present short descriptions of each of these species, citations to published illustrations, and also comments and field pictures of most of them.

Pesquisa desenvolvida no âmbito do projeto PELD BISC. Brazilian Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) Atlantic Forest Network [CNPq 457451/2012-9]; CNPq/Capes/FAPs/BC-Fundo Newton/PELD [number 15/ 2016]. Ruellia reitzii was first collected in 1948 by the prominent botanist Raulino Reitz in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil, and the species was only known from two gatherings. Because its most recent collection was in 1953, the species was considered possibly extinct. In this work we present the rediscovery of this species, 65 years after its last collection. Here we complement and rectify the morphologic knowledge of the species, present the first photographs of living specimens and assess its conservation status. We also present notes on the authorship of the name R. squarrosa, and provide an identification key to the species of Ruellia that occur in Santa Catarina.

Plantago australis is considered to be obligately cleistogamous. Here we present evidence based on field work, herbarium collections and literature to show that this species produces both chasmogamous and cleistogamous flowers. We also hypothesise that the species is ambophilic.

The genus Euphorbia is among the most diverse and species-rich plant genera on Earth, exhibiting a near-cosmopolitan distribution and extraordinary chemical diversity, especially across highly toxic macro-and polycyclic diterpenoids. However, very little is known about drivers and evolutionary origins of chemical diversity within Euphorbia. Here, we investigate 43 Euphorbia species to understand how geographic separation over evolutionary time has impacted chemical differentiation. We show that the structurally highly diverse Euphorbia diterpenoids are significantly reduced in species native to the Americas, compared to the Eurasian and African continents, where the genus originated. The localization of these compounds to young stems and roots suggest ecological relevance in herbivory defense and immunomodulatory defense mechanisms match diterpenoid levels, indicating chemoevolutionary adaptation to reduced herbivory pressure.One Sentence SummaryGlobal chemo-evolutionary adaptation of Euphorbia affected immunomodulatory defense mechanisms.

Sobre la base de un ejemplar de herbario recolectado a 1100 m.s.n.m., en el estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil, se describe e ilustra una nueva especie del género Oxypetalum R. Br. (Apocynaceae). Se provee información sobre su estado de conservación y se brindan observaciones ecológicas. Se discuten las similitudes y diferencias con especies afines. Based on herbarium material collected at 1100 m.a.s.l. in the Santa Catarina State, Brazil, a new species of Oxypetalum R. Br. (Apocynaceae) is here described and illustrated. The premise of this study is to present the collection of the FURB herbarium, its collection area and type specimens, as well as its projects and contributions to the flora of the Subtropical Atlantic Forest. The FURB herbarium currently has nearly 41,000 records of vascular plants and has the largest collection of lycophytes and ferns in Southern Brazil, with more than 8,000 records. More than 4,500 scanned images of 4,436 species are available online, and it is expected that the whole collection will be scanned in less than one year. There are 198 families of angiosperms, 33 of ferns, three of lycophytes and six of gymnosperms. All collections of the Floristic and Forest Inventory of Santa Catarina project are recorded in FURB, which represents almost 35,000 herbarium specimens. The families with the largest number of species are: Cyperaceae (109 species), Rubiaceae (129), Solanaceae (131), Poaceae (155), Melastomataceae (157), Myrtaceae (257), Orchidaceae (288), Fabaceae (323), and Asteraceae (426), between angiosperms. Among the ferns and lycophytes are: Hymenophyllaceae (30), Thelypteridaceae (31), Aspleniaceae (32), Dryopteridaceae (43), Pteridaceae (54) and Polypodiaceae (60). There are five type specimens among them: one holotype, one isotype and three paratypes. To date, the FURB herbarium has donated 19,521 herbarium duplicates for identification or expansion of other herbaria.

We describe here Hoehnea grandiflora, a rare, critically endangered new species of Lamiaceae from high-elevation bogs in southern Brazil. The new species is similar to H. scutellarioides and can be distinguished by its shape and size of leaves, as some floral features. Its conservation status is assessed as Critically Endangered, because the new species is known from only one population located in an environmentally unprotected area. Urgent conservation studies and actions are necessary to prevent the extinction of this species. We also provide an identification key to the five species in the genus Hoehnea.

Cleistes pallida, a new species of Orchidaceae, is described and illustrated. The relationship of this new species to other taxa of the genus are discussed.

This contribution describes Phyllanthus eremitus, an extremely narrowly endemic new species from an arenitic rock outcrop in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. We assess the conservation status of the new species as critically endangered, because only one population is known, containing less than 30 mature individuals, and it is outside any environmental protection area. We provide a detailed morphological description, a distribution map and photographs of the new species. In addition to that, we lectotypify the name P. hyssopifolioides and present the first records of this species in Santa Catarina, which were discovered during field and herbarium work. Finally, we provide an updated identification key to Phyllanthus in Santa Catarina.

This contribution presents and describes Tradescantia serrana, a new species from the edges of Araucaria forest in the highlands of southern Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. Illustrations, photographs and a distribution map for the new species are provided. Here, we also typify T. umbraculifera, a species morphologically related to T. serrana, and present evidence against the synonymisation of T. schwirkowskiana with T. crassula proposed by Pellegrini et al. (2017). Furthermore, we extend the distribution of T. schwirkowskiana to Paraná state.

This contribution presents updates to the knowledge of the species of Euphorbia that occur in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. More specifically, we here typify the names E. cyathophora , E. hirtella , E. paranensis and E. stenophylla , and present the first records of E. cyathophora , E. graminea , E. ophthalmica and E. thymifolia for Santa Catarina. Finally, we provide an updated identification key to all 30 species of Euphorbia that occur in Santa Catarina, including native, naturalised and cultivated species.

Senecio reitzianus was described from sand dunes in Lagoa da Conceição (Florianópolis, Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil). The species remained to be known only from the type. Almost seventy years later, we discovered a population of this species in Costão do Santinho, about 20 km from the type locality. A detailed account of this population is provided and its conservation status is assessed. We also present photographs of this species from the wild and also of the holotype, as well as a new description and comparisons with similar species in the genus. Our results reinforce the urgent need of further field work, especially on data-deficient species, in order to have a chance to prevent the species extinction.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Atlantic Forest is a biome in dangerous situation and it lacks wider information on species with medicinal purposes used by people in this area. In this study an ethnobotanical survey was conducted in Apiuna district, Brazil with the goal of assessing traditional knowledge of medicinal plants used by rural communities in a region covered by Atlantic Forest. Materials and methods The ethnobotanical data were collected through semi-structured interviews and a free list of plants used for medicinal purposes. The respondents were selected by snow ball method. Therefore, the therapeutic use of plants was investigated and the species cited was collected and identified. Local plant uses were evaluated using ethnobotanical indices of diversity and equitability, and then compared with those obtained in other regions of Atlantic Forest in Brazil. Besides, the informant consensus factor (ICF) was calculated. Results A total of 162 species belonging to 61 families were recorded, mainly Asteraceae and Lamiaceae. Furthermore, the species cited, 45.06% were native and 54.94% were considered exotic. The most frequently reported medicinal uses were the symptoms and signs (17.42%), digestive system (15.33%) and, infectious and parasitic diseases (12.73%). Although, the ICF calculation showed that mental and behavioral (0.85), respiratory system (0.79) and, digestive and genitourinary system diseases (0.78 for both) were the categories with higher values reached. Usually, the administration is oral from leaves preparations. Conclusions Folk medicine in rural communities in this region of Atlantic Forest is an important source of primary health care. The results indicate an available knowledge of medicinal plants uses in this area, when compared to other regions previously studied. The fact that this research was conducted next to a conservation area makes it possible to dispose the knowledge organized here into a tool for environmental education as well as preservation. Moreover, the pharmacological information will further contribute for the validation and the use of these species in Brazilian health programs benefiting the population.

This work presents and describes Hypoxis atlantica, a new species only known from two disjunct coastal areas in eastern Brazil. Despite our best efforts to collect this species in other areas, we had to assess its conservation status as data deficient. We include here a complete description, photographs, a distribution map and an updated identification key to the species of Hypoxis in South America.

This contribution presents and describes Siphocampylus baccae and S. sevegnaniae, two narrowly endemic new species from waterfalls and rocky cliffs in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. We assess the conservation status of both species as critically endangered (CR) according to the IUCN criteria. We present descriptions, photographs, a distribution map and taxonomic comments on the new species along with an identification key to the species of Siphocampylus that occur in Santa Catarina.

In the present study, the effects were evaluated of alkaloid fractions (AFs) from Psychotria species and correlated genera, Palicourea and Rudgea, on monoamine oxidases (MAOs) and cholinesterases (ChEs). By HPLC-DAD and UPLC-DAD-MS analyses, indole alkaloids (IA) were detected in all AFs. For the Psychotria and Palicourea species, these IA corresponded to tetrahydro-β-carboline alkaloids (THβCA). On the other hand, pyrrolidinoindoline core compounds were observed for Rudgea species. Regarding their pharmacological activities, none of the AFs was able to inhibit AChE. However, the BChE activity was impaired by the Psychotria and Palicourea AFs. In addition, MAO-A was inhibited by both AFs, but only Psychotria nemorosa AF was able to inhibit significantly MAO-B. Rudgea AFs demonstrated a poor inhibitory profile on MAO-A. Taken together, our results highlighted the Psychotria and Palicourea genera as important sources of scaffolds for the development of MAO-A and BChE inhibitors aiming at the treatment of neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric diseases.

With this contribution we designate a lectotype for the name Commelina vilavelhensis, and present evidence for the synonymisation of this name under C. obliqua. We also designate here lectotypes for the names C. robusta and C. scabrata, other synonyms of C. obliqua, and discuss the taxonomic and nomenclatural situation of the name Heterocarpus obliquus. Furthermore, we present evidence that the lectotype of C. obliqua originated from plants cultivated in Paris, France and not in Uppsala, Sweden as currently accepted. We also provide here the first identification key to the eight species of Commelina that occur in the South region of Brazil.

Saranthe ustulata was described by Otto Georg Petersen in 1890 based on undated material collected by Johann Friedrich Theodor Müller in southern Brazil during the nineteenth century. Since then, absolutely no information was available about this species, and it has even recently been thought as probably extinct. More than a century later, we discovered in the “Railroad of Bromeliads” (Apiúna municipality, Santa Catarina state, Brazil) a population of S. ustulata. A detailed description of this species is provided and its conservation status is assessed. Furthermore, we designed a lectotype and an epitype for this name. Our results reinforce the urgent need of more taxonomic research both in tropical regions, and in older herbaria, where a multitude of new species still await discovery and description.

This contribution presents and describes Commelina catharinensis, a new, narrow endemic species only known from two very restricted areas of coastal vegetation in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. Both localities where this species has been collected are currently highly threatened by both legal and illegal urban advance. The new species classifies as endangered (EN) according to the IUCN criteria. We also provide here the first identification key to the species of Commelina that occur in Santa Catarina.

This paper aim to characterize the herbaceous and shrub species diversity of Parque Nacional da Serra do Itajaí (PNSI). We identified 643 herbaceous and shrub species distributed in 110 families being the most representative family Asteraceae (62 species), Melastomataceae (49) and Rubiaceae (30), besides a two new records for Santa Catarina (Thelypteris glaziovii T.F. Reed and Pseudelephantopus spiralis Cronquist). We recorded 22 exotic species. Thus, due to the vast diversity of life and the rather large territory, PNSI is one of the most important spots for biodiversity conservation in Santa Catarina.
