Data are presented for the (/sup 3/He, t) reaction at energies of 600 MeV, 1.2 GeV, and 2 GeV on targets /sup nat/C, /sup 54/Fe, and /sup 89/Y. The low--excitation-energy regions of the spectra are dominated by isospin-spin excitations. Cross-section calculations in distorted-wave impulse approximation with parameters from NN data account reasonably well for the data. At 2-GeV bombarding energy a strong excitation of the ..delta.. resonance is observed for all targets.

The γ-rays produced by absorption of stopped K − mesons in a 9 Be target were measured in coincidence with the accompanying charged pions and π 0 mesons. The γ-line at (1.22 ± 0.04) MeV observed in coincidence with the (40–80) MeV charged pions was tentatively ascribed to a γ-transition in the Λ 8 Li hypernucleus. A possible interpretation of this line as a decay of the 1 − excited state to the 1 − ground state in Λ 8 Li is discussed.

The reaction $^{6}\mathrm{Li}(p, {\ensuremath{\Delta}}^{++})^{6}\mathrm{He}$ has been studied at 1.04 GeV for transferred momenta ranging from 0.11 to 0.35 ${(\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathit{c})}^{2}$. An exponential decrease of the cross section is observed. A Glauber-type calculation is presented. The possibility of extracting information on ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\ensuremath{\Delta}N}$ and ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\ensuremath{\Delta}N}$ is discussed.

Momentum spectra of projectile fragments from 1.1 A GeV20Ne interactions with a Fe target have been measured with associated charged-particle multiplicity of participant nucleons. We also measured fragment absorption by introducing a Fe absorber. We searched for enhanced anomalous fragment production for fragments of charge 6≦Z≦ 10 as a function of multiplicity. To the possible exception of18Ne, a negative result is reported.

The γ spectra induced by stopped K − mesons in a 7 Li target were obtained in coincidence with the accompanying charged pions. A thorough analysis of these spectra indicates that the observed 1.09 MeV line can be ascribed to a γ transition in the 4 Λ H hypernucleus.

(p,pd), (p,pt), and (p,p/sup 3/He) reactions have been studied at 75 MeV on /sup 12/C and /sup 16/O. A good energy resolution (approx. 400 keV) permitted the observation of several levels of the different residual nuclei. The results are analyzed with distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations, and spectroscopic factors are extracted and compared with theoretical predictions. A comparison of our results with experimental data from transfer reactions on the same nuclei is made. Spectroscopic and mechanism information are discussed; in particular, the excitation of T = 1 levels in /sup 10/B and /sup 14/N allowed the comparison with p--d* (S = 0,T = 1) scattering obtained from other reactions.

The γ-spectra induced by stopped K− mesons in 6Li and 7Li targets in coincidence with the accompanying charged pions and π0 mesons. The γ-line at (1.04 ± 0.04) MeV observed with charged pions was identified as a γ-transition in Λ4H, whereas the γ-line at (1.15 ± 0.04)_MeV observed with π0 mesons was ascribed to a γ-transition in Λ4He. Using these new values for the excitation energies of the 1+ levels of Λ4H and Λ4He hypernuclei, the phenomenological ΛN potential for the s-state interaction was recalculated.

The study of the nuc1eon-antinucleon (NN) interaction is needed for a better understanding of the nature of the forces governing the nucleon-nucleon (NN) system (a subject of ordinary Nuclear physics) and, hopefully, for a more general theory of baryon-baryon interaction. Why is additional information on the NN system necessary after decades of intense experimental and theoretical work ? The answer is that conclusions regarding NN forces are drawn from the data on NN scattering and on the deuteron structure. In both cases (the deuteron is a loosely bound system) relatively large interaction distances are probed (≥ 1 fm).

Previously reported measurement of inelastic scattering of 20.3 MeV polarized protons from 90Zr, 92Zr and 92Mo 1) have shown poor agreement between the predictions of the nuclear collective model and the analyzing power for the first 2+ states in these nuclei, although the corresponding cross-sections for these states were well reproduced by the model. On the other hand, the analyzing power for the low-lying 3− states in these nuclei were fairly well reproduced. Although the agreement between the analyzing power and the coupled-channels collective model calculations were somewhat improved by the introduction of the “full Thomas term” of the distorted spin-orbit potential, the overall agreement remains poor for the 2+ analyzing power.

We describe the “drift chamber” detection setup of SPES4, the 4 GeV/c spectrometer at Laboratoire National Saturne. The particle identification is performed by combining magnetic rigidity selection with energy loss and time of flight measurements. This allows to separate analysed isotopes from Z = 1 to at least Z = 10 up to a rigidity of 4 GeV/c. A charge resolution of ΔZrms = 0.1 and a time resolution of Δtrms = 120 ps for 18Ne at about 3 GeV/c per Z are easily obtained. Two sets of multiwire drift chambers are used to measure and reconstruct the particle trajectories at the output of the system. A position resolution better than Δxrms = 160 μm can be achieved in the focal plane. This corresponds to a momentum resolution of Δδrms = 0.22 × 10−4. The performances of SPES4 (Δδrms = 2.2 × 10−4) can then be wholly exploited.
