Productive records from 1988 to 1992 were analyzed to evaluate the influence of environmental (years; 88-92; seasons of calving; December-March, April-May, June-July, August - November), physiological (number of calving: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or more) and genetic breed groups (Holstein PHt, B Brown swiss PPs, Criollo PCr, Brahman PBr) factors on milk production of a crossbred herd Alto Viento, farm located in Urdaneta County, Zulia state, Venezuela, which is classified as a tropical dry forest zone. Data were evaluated through a variance-co-variance analysis using the least squares method. The results indicate that number and season of calving affected (P< 0.05) lactation length (LL; n=312), total production (TP; n=312) and production at 305 days (P305; n=312); also, breed group affected TP (P< 0.01), LL and P305 (P< 0.05). The days open linear regression coefficient affected TP (P< 0.01) al¡ the studied variables. With respect to breed groups PHt shown better LL, TP and P305 than PPs, PCr and PBr in 1.68, 4.30, 3.01; 7.46, 10.75, 10.59; 5.11, 7.5, 8.37% respectively (LL=307.4 days, TP=2133.8 kg and P305=1958.1 kg). It can be concluded the crossbred group is the factor haring the greatest influence on LL, TP and P305, and that the Bos Taurus predominant breed groups were the best. However, for tropical dry forest conditions it is recommended to breed animals haring B. indicus trend in order to obtain crossbreeds with - characteristics like rusticity favoring the productive behavior of this breeds. 99 - 104 Trimestral

An experiment was conducted in Quíbor Valley, Lara State, Venezuela, to evaluate the use efficiency of the elements N, P and K in plants of maize and pigeonpea sewed as monocrops or intercrops. Plants were grown without fertilizer application, or under 120 kg·ha-1 of nitrogen and 30 kg·ha-1 of phosphorus. It was measured the absorption of nutrients during plant vegetative growth, flowering and fruit maturation, along with the efficiency of absorption and conversion in absolute terms during the maturation stage, using a randomized block design with five replications. The results showed a higher absorption of N and K in intercropping corn in comparison with sole crop. In pigeonpea, there was a higher accumulation of N and P in the sole crop plot, and the intercropping was more affected independently of the fertilizer application. Efficiency of absolute conversion had opposed tendencies when it was compared to the absorption, therefore corn in monocrop was superior to the intercrop. In pigeonpea opposite result was observed. The land equivalent ratio (LER) for N-PK, based on their absorption and conversion efficiencies, indicated advantages of intercropping over the sole crop regardless of the fertilizer application

Grain yield and efficiency of a maize-pigeon pea intercropping system were compared in an additive experiment with 62.500 plants/ha sole cropped maize (CENIAP PB8), 50.000 plants/ha sole cropped pigeonpea (ICPL 87119) and 112.500 plants/ha in intercropping plots. Two fertilization levels were applied. Maize was planted 20 days after pigeonpea. Grain yields of maize were 6938 and 7665 kg/ha in not fertilized and fertilized monoculture plots, and 7030 and 7507 kg/ha in not fertilized and fertilized intercropped plots, respectively. No statistical differences were found in pigeonpea, with grain yields of 3437 and 3464 kg/ha in not fertilized and fertilized sole cropped plots, and 3064 and 3277 kg/ha in not fertilized and fertilized intercropped plots. Efficiency indexes land equivalent ratio (LER), area-time equivalency ratio (ATER) and area-harvest equivalency ratio (AHER) showed advantages of intercropping in relation to monocultures.
