2. Deepfakes and the 2020 US elections: what (did not) happen

Abstract

Alarmed by the volume of disinformation that was assumed to have taken place during the 2016 US elections, scholars, politics and journalists predicted the worst when the first deepfakes began to emerge in 2018. After all, US Elections 2020 were believed to be the most secure in American history. This paper seeks explanations for an apparent contradiction: we believe that it was precisely the multiplication and conjugation of different types of warnings and fears that created the conditions that prevented malicious political deepfakes from affecting the 2020 US elections. From these warnings, we identified four factors (more active role of social networks, new laws, difficulties in accessing Artificial Intelligence and better awareness of society). Abstract

Culture of living cells using scaffolds and bioreactors to mimic the natural environment of native tissue as close and possible allows to better understand the mechano-biological parameters involved. In this context, the architecture of biodegradable scaffolds contributes to control some of these key parameters such as permeability and fluid flow-induced shear stress. However, these studies are very time-consuming and costly. As a complement to in vitro research on the influence of these parameters, the use of numerical models plays here a key role to predict the mechano-biological outcomes. In this study, the effect of biodegradable scaffold's architecture on the above-mentioned parameters was computationally investigated. For this purpose, eight orthogonal and non-orthogonal scaffolds including graded and non-graded porous models under dynamic cell culture conditions were explored. The results suggest 60GRAD geometry as the best candidate for bone tissue engineering. The findings of this work can be used to design better biodegradable scaffolds in this research field. Abstract

In six years, the word deepfake has gone from a niche on Reddit to the main object of research for hundreds of researchers and to the front line of concern of many policymakers. However, this transition did not lead to a faithful definition because it is still an in-flux technology. There is one sector, however, that is incompatible with vague and equivocal concepts: legislative production. In this study, we analysed the definitions of deepfakes (or synthetic media) in the laws of five states in the United States and proposed the key concepts that characterise them: artificial intelligence, fake/false and the reference (specific or generic) to the media that can support these deepfakes. Abstract

Cold recycled asphalt mixtures (CRAMs) may present a compressive resilient modulus dependent on the stress state. Currently, there is no widespread consensus on a triaxial resilient modulus (TxRM) model for CRAM analysis. A widely accepted TxRM model would favour the analysis of CRAM's layered pavement systems. This paper assessed the adequacy of different TxRM models of CRAM's specimens with different compositions, aggregate gradation and physical characteristics. Based on the literature, three different TxRM models were selected. The models' non-linear estimation was performed through Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm. Model selection analysis was based on residuals square sum root (RSSR) assessment. Ni et al.'s model was found to be the most adequate for CRAM's TxRM modelling based on RSSR analysis. The model selection was done regardless of aggregate gradation, binder type/content, air void content, RAP content, TxRM values range, active filler type and curing time of the tested specimens. Abstract

The different features of the impact of nanoparticles on cells, such as the structure of the core, presence/absence of doping, quality of surface, diameter, and dose, were used to define quasi-SMILES, a line of symbols encoded the above physicochemical features of the impact of nanoparticles. The correlation weight for each code in the quasi-SMILES has been calculated by the Monte Carlo method. The descriptor, which is the sum of the correlation weights, is the basis for a one-variable model of the biological activity of nano-inhibitors of human lung carcinoma cell line A549. The system of models obtained by the above scheme was checked on the self-consistence, i.e., reproducing the statistical quality of these models observed for different distributions of available nanomaterials into the training and validation sets. The computational experiments confirm the excellent potential of the approach as a tool to predict the impact of nanomaterials under different experimental conditions. Abstract

Regarding electric field stimulation in tissue engineering, namely in bone in vitro stimulation, we wonder if by introduc-ing different scaffold geometries into the cell culture chamber environment, we are changing the externally applied electric field magnitude. Also, if we assume that the presence of the scaffold changes the magnitude of the surrounding electric field, can we just by picking a specific scaffold material be delivering electric fields outside the osteoinductive range for that specific cell line. To answer these questions, numerical models for three different scaffold geometries and for a capacitively coupled system were created. The models allow to understand that the presence of the scaffold impacts and interferes with its surrounding electric field, generating patterns that may increase the electric field magnitude in some regions inside the scaffod, and at the same time may block the electric field in other regions of the same scaffold. Another insigth from numerical models is that even keeping the same scaffold geometry, just by changing the scaffold material we are changing this interference pattern and delivering different electric fields in the scaffold region-of-interest. 36. Multifunctional bacterial cellulose-chitosan tape: an innovative substitute for PVC

Abstract

Synthetic polymers, generically named plastics, are manufactured from non-renewable sources, such as fossil fuels [1]. In 2020, 367 million metric tons of plastic were produced worldwide, and, only in 2018, global plastic waste volume reached 342.6 million metric tons [2,3]. One of the most used plastics is polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is not environmentally friendly. The goal of this study was to achieve an eco-friendly substitute for PVC tapes while mimicking their properties and applications. In this way, bacterial cellulose (BC) and chitosan (CH) tapes in different concentrations, 1% and 2%, were developed. Mechanical properties, thickness, bonds between BC and CH and degradation tests were assessed in water and under different temperatures. Mechanical testing showed that the combination of the two polymers resulted in better mechanical performances when compared to BC tape (8.52 ± 1.11 MPa); this may be related to the stronger chemical bonds created between the BC and CH. In addition, BC–CH at 1% revealed closer values of strength compared to PVC tapes (703.19 ± 16.18 MPa and 516.92 ± 22.0 MPa, respectively). Moreover, with the present study we were able to conclude that the incorporation of CH increases tape porosity. Interestingly, higher porosities (BC and CH at 2%) resulted in better mechanical properties upon tensile testing (1344 ± 52.87 MPa). Upon contact with water, the BC–CH mixture at 1% proved to be more resistant and not mechanically affected over time, like PCV tape. Thermally, both tapes with CH revealed to be more resistant than the PVC tape. However, the BC–CH tape at 1% was the most stable over time at all temperatures tested. 46. Eco-friendly flagging tape

Abstract

One of the problems of using commercial flagging tapes is that they are produced with non-degradable plastic and remain in the environment for long periods. To find a solution, an eco-friendly flagging tape was developed. Bacterial cellulose (BC) was used to produce a cellulose-based film and it was hypothesised that coating the tapes with a polymer would improve their resistance. So, two natural polymers (chitosan and hyaluronic acid) were used to coat the BC tapes. The wet BC was also stained with natural pigments extracted from carrot and spinach. Mechanical testing showed that uncoated BC tapes have similar resistance to hyaluronic acid coated tape. However, the chitosan-coated tapes and the tapes pigmented with the selected pigments showed a decrease in mechanical resistance. Biodegradability tests showed that the uncoated BC tape and BC tape coated with chitosan or hyaluronic acid did not fully degrade within three months.
