3. Capacitive Coupled Step-Down DC–DC Converter With Touch Current Limitation

Abstract

This article proposes a high-efficiency step-down dc–dc converter with limited touch current and voltage gain equivalent to the conventional buck converter. By including a capacitive coupling cell, it is possible to reduce touch currents, presenting a higher safety degree against electric shocks. The main operating stages and equations describing the proposed converter are presented. The capacitive coupling cell operates through the resonant switched-capacitor principle and the impact of the parasitic elements is evaluated. Even though it has a resonant stage, the converter operates with a fixed switching frequency, simplifying the control scheme. A design guideline based on the converter specifications and safety criteria is presented. Simulation results are included to compare the touch current generated by the proposed converter and that of the conventional buck converter, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposal. Experimental results for a 3 kW prototype operating at 180 kHz switching frequency are presented, including waveforms of main components, closed-loop control performance and efficiency curve, with a peak around 97.8%. An experimental evaluation comparing the proposed converter and the LLC half-bridge converter is also performed. Finally, the touch current tests demonstrated that the risk is automatically eliminated by the proposed converter in approximately 60 ms.

Abstract

This paper analyzes, designs and implements a reconfigurable phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converter. It adopts the topology of the traditional PSFB converter and incorporates clamping circuits to solve some fundamental problems of conventional topology. In addition, auxiliary switches are employed for output reconfiguration, which allows expanding the output voltage range without compromising the system efficiency. Single pole double throw (SPDT) mechanical switches are used to realize series and parallel connections. In this paper, the characterization of the PSFB converter with clamping circuit and its design considerations are discussed. A 10 kW prototype with a power density of 0.485 W/cm3, 900 V input voltage and 400/800 V nominal output voltage was manufactured. The experimental results validated the analysis and confirmed the high conversion efficiency for a wide load range; an efficiency of 96.69% was obtained for the full load condition. Abstract

This paper presents a regenerative step-up/step-down dc-dc zero-voltage-switching pulsewidth-modulation converter with active clamping. The switch losses are reduced due to the implementation of a simple active snubber circuit that provides soft commutation in all the switches of the converter. The theoretical analysis, basic equations, design methodology, and experimental results are shown in this paper. A control methodology to assure the output voltage regulation is also proposed. The main advantages of the proposed power converter are the small number of components, simplicity of the controller, robustness, small weight and size, and high efficiency. It is very attractive for single-phase high-power applications. Switching losses are reduced due to implementation of the simple active snubber circuit that provides zero-voltage-switching conditions for all switches, which includes the auxiliary one. Its main features are simple modulation strategy, robustness, low weight and volume, low harmonic distortion of the output current, and high efficiency. The principle of operation for steady-state conditions, mathematical analysis, and experimental results from a laboratory prototype are presented. Abstract

As a contribution for sustainability, electric vehicles (EVs) are seen as one of the most effective influences in the transport sector. As complement to the challenges that entails the EVs integration into the grid considering the bidirectional operation (grid-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-grid), there are new concepts associated with the EV operation integrating various benefits for smart homes. In this sense, this paper proposes an improved voltage control of the EV operating as uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in smart homes. With the EV plugged-in into the smart home, it can act as an off-line UPS protecting the electrical appliances from power grid outages. Throughout the paper, the foremost advantages of the proposed voltage control strategy are comprehensively emphasized, establishing a comparison with the classical approach. Aiming to offer a sinusoidal voltage for linear and nonlinear electrical appliances, a pulse-width modulation with a multi-loop control scheme is used. A Kalman filter is used for decreasing significantly the time of detecting power outages and, consequently, the transition for the UPS mode. The experimental validation was executed with a bidirectional charger containing a double stage power conversion (an ac-dc interfacing the grid-side and a dc-dc interfacing the batteries- side) and a digital stage. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia Elétrica Este trabalho apresenta uma família de Inversores ZVS PWM com grampeamento ativo que utilizam um único interruptor auxiliar. As estruturas são particularmente simples e robustas. São muito atrativas para aplicações em acionamentos elétricos, UPS's e filtros ativos de alta potência. As perdas por comutação são reduzidas com a implementação de um circuito snubber simples e regenerativo que provém comutação ZVS para todos os interruptores. A interferência eletromagnética é reduzida com o controle das derivadas de corrente. A tensão sobre os interruptores é reduzida devido ao grampeamento ativo. Suas principais vantagens são: Estratégia de controle simples, robustez, baixo peso e volume, baixo conteúdo de distorção harmônica da corrente de saída, baixa interferência eletromagnética e alta eficiência. Princípio de operação em regime permanente, análise matemática, procedimento de projeto e resultados experimentais são apresentados.
