In this paper, we report on the acceleration of protons and oxygen ions from tens of micrometer large water droplets by a high-intensity laser in the range of 1020 W/cm2. Proton energies of up to 6 MeV were obtained from a hybrid acceleration regime between classical Coulomb explosion and shocks. Besides the known thermal energy spectrum, a collective acceleration of oxygen ions of different charge states is observed. 3D PIC simulations and analytical models are employed to support the experiential findings and reveal the potential for further applications and studies.

With this perspective, we developed a high efficiency neutron counter taking into account the specifics of a high intensity laser environment. Using GEANT4 simulations and prototype testings, we report on the design of a modular neutron-counter based on boron-10 enriched scintillators and high-density polyethylene moderator. This detector has been calibrated using a plutonium-beryllium neutron source and commissioned during an actual neutrons producing laser experiment at theLULI2000 facility (France). An overall efficiency of 4.37(59)% has been demonstrated during calibration with a recovery time of a few hundreds microseconds after laser-plasma interaction. We also tested using units of this detector in neutron time-of-flight configuration during the commissioning of the 1PW arm of the Apollon laser facility. Neutrons produced by the conversion of proton accelerated by the 1PW arm of the Apollon facility have been detected, of which we will present preliminary results.

The development, characterization and implementation of a water (H 2 O) droplet source for laser–plasma interactions at high-repetition rates are reported. The system is capable of generating a continuous stream of water droplets for several hours and was tested to operate continuously as a target source. Based on glass capillaries, a detailed parameter scan on the automated pulling process is presented, allowing a fine-tuning of the shape of the capillaries and therefore the diameter of the droplets.

An experimental platform was designed to study the effects of laser accelerated protons (LAPs) on mammalian cells. The protons, in the MeV energy range, originate from the rear side of a thin 5 µm Ti foil target following the interaction with a high power laser pulse and are accelerated by the target normal sheath mechanism. A tape Ti foil target was developed, allowing a shot repetition rate of up to 5 Hz, which corresponds to the rate of the laser system. A dipole magnet arrangement was used for energy dispersion and to separate the proton burst from electrons and x rays. The absorbed radiation dose at the cell port was measured with CR39 plastic detectors and calibrated imaging plates. An epifluorescence microscope with compact open-beam optics was developed to image live cells and their spatiotemporal properties during and after irradiation. To demonstrate the functionality of all components of the platform, biological proof of concept experiments were carried out using two suspension (Jurkat and Ramos) and two adherent (HeLa and A-549) cell lines. A multitude of biological procedures and analytical techniques were established on-site or in laboratories nearby. For example, we analyzed DNA double-strand break (DSB) induction and repair by detecting the γH2A.X signal by fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. The shaping of astrophysical outflows into bright, dense, and collimated jets due to magnetic pressure is here investigated using laboratory experiments. Here we look at the impact on jet collimation of a misalignment between the outflow, as it stems from the source, and the magnetic field. For small misalignments, a magnetic nozzle forms and redirects the outflow in a collimated jet. For growing misalignments, this nozzle becomes increasingly asymmetric, disrupting jet formation. Our results thus suggest outflow/magnetic field misalignment to be a plausible key process regulating jet collimation in a variety of objects from our Sun’s outflows to extragalatic jets. Furthermore, they provide a possible interpretation for the observed structuring of astrophysical jets. Jet modulation could be interpreted as the signature of changes over time in the outflow/ambient field angle, and the change in the direction of the jet could be the signature of changes in the direction of the ambient field., Mass outflow is a common process in astrophysical objects. Here the authors investigate in which conditions an astrophysically-scaled laser-produced plasma flow can be collimated and evolves in the presence of a misaligned external magnetic field.

Aims. Investigating the process of matter accretion onto forming stars through scaled experiments in the laboratory is important in order to better understand star and planetary system formation and evolution. Such experiments can indeed complement observations by providing access to the processes with spatial and temporal resolution. A previous investigation revealed the existence of a two-component stream: a hot shell surrounding a cooler inner stream. The shell was formed by matter laterally ejected upon impact and refocused by the local magnetic field. That laboratory investigation was limited to normal incidence impacts. However, in young stellar objects, the complex structure of magnetic fields causes variability of the incident angles of the accretion columns. This led us to undertake an investigation, using laboratory plasmas, of the consequence of having a slanted accretion impacting a young star. Methods. Here, we used high power laser interactions and strong magnetic field generation in the laboratory, complemented by numerical simulations, to study the asymmetry induced upon accretion structures when columns of matter impact the surface of young stars with an oblique angle. Results. Compared to the scenario where matter accretes perpendicularly to the star surface, we observe a strongly asymmetric plasma structure, strong lateral ejecta of matter, poor confinement of the accreted material, and reduced heating compared to the normal incidence case. Thus, slanted accretion is a configuration that seems to be capable of inducing perturbations of the chromosphere and hence possibly influencing the level of activity of the corona.

We present a study on laser-driven proton acceleration from a hydrogen cluster target. Aiming for the optimisation of the proton source, we performed a detailed parametric scan of the interaction conditions by varying different laser and the target parameters. While the underlying process of a Coulomb-explosion delivers moderate energies, in the range of 100 s of keV, the use of hydrogen as target material comes with the benefit of a debris-free, single-species proton acceleration scheme, enabling high repetition-rate experiments, which are very robust against shot-to-shot fluctuations.

The process of high energy electron acceleration along the surface of grating targets (GTs) that were irradiated by a relativistic, high-contrast laser pulse at an intensity $I=2.5\times 10^{20}~\text{W}/\text{cm}^{2}$ was studied. Our experimental results demonstrate that for a GT with a periodicity twice the laser wavelength, the surface electron flux is more intense for a laser incidence angle that is larger compared to the resonance angle predicted by the linear model. An electron beam with a peak charge of ${\sim}2.7~\text{nC}/\text{sr}$ , for electrons with energies ${>}1.5~\text{MeV}$ , was measured. Numerical simulations carried out with parameters similar to the experimental conditions also show an enhanced electron flux at higher incidence angles depending on the preplasma scale length. A theoretical model that includes ponderomotive effects with more realistic initial preplasma conditions suggests that the laser-driven intensity and preformed plasma scale length are important for the acceleration process. The predictions closely match the experimental and computational results.

We report on a detailed experimental and numerical study on the boosted acceleration of protons from ultra-thin hemispherical targets utilizing multi-Joule short-pulse laser-systems. For a laser intensity of 1 × 1020 W/cm2 and an on-target energy of only 1.3 J with this setup a proton cut-off energy of 8.5 MeV was achieved, which is a factor of 1.8 higher compared to a flat foil target of the same thickness. While a boost of the acceleration process by additionally injected electrons was observed for sophisticated targets at high-energy laser-systems before, our studies reveal that the process can be utilized over at least two orders of magnitude in intensity and is therefore suitable for a large number of nowadays existing laser-systems. We retrieved a cut-off energy of about 6.5 MeV of proton energy per Joule of incident laser energy, which is a noticeable enhancement with respect to previous results employing this mechanism. The approach presented here has the advantage of using structure-wise simple targets and being sustainable for numerous applications and high repetition rate demands at the same time.

Laser parameters including energy, pulse duration, and intensity were varied to investigate the influence on the EM pulse amplitude. The data reveal that the amplitude of the EM pulse depends on the incident laser energy and the pulse duration. The optimum pulse length for a given laser energy is found to be close to 100 fs. The net charge associated with the traveling EM pulse has been found to be dependent on the laser intensity, in a good agreement with a semiempirical model. However, for a long time, this technique was not considered a viable means of electron acceleration due to the large intrinsic divergence (∼50° half-angle) of the electrons. Recently, a reduction in this divergence to 10°–20° half-angle has been obtained, using plasma-based magnetic fields or very high contrast laser pulses to extract the electrons into the vacuum. Here we show that we can further improve the electron beam collimation, down to ∼1.5° half-angle, of a high-charge (6 nC) beam, and in a highly reproducible manner, while using standard stand-alone 100 TW-class laser pulses. This is obtained by embedding the laser-target interaction in an external, large-scale (cm), homogeneous, extremely stable, and high-strength (20 T) magnetic field that is independent of the laser. The role of the radiation pressure of an intense laser beam in the formation of proton and carbon spectra from thin foils is discussed. The data presented suggests that, in competition with the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration mechanism, the onset of the Light Sail (LS) region of Radiation Pressure Acceleration can be obtained for suitably thin targets at currently available laser intensities,. The spectral features and their scaling with the laser and target parameters are consistent with the scenario of Light Sail (LS) acceleration.

By directing the laser-driven electromagnetic pulses along a helical path, one can achieve a travelling-field accelerator arrangement for simultaneous beam shaping and re-acceleration of laser-accelerated protons. The dynamics of guided acceleration of the transiting protons was studied by varying the length of the helical coil. Experimental data shows that the protons co-moving with the field region exhibit stronger focussing while increasing the coil length, with an increase of kinetic energy due to simultaneous post-acceleration. The net energy gain for a coil of constant pitch however saturates eventually when the post-accelerated protons overtakes the accelerating field region in due course. 3D particle tracing simulation underpins the dynamics of beam transport inside the coil, which highlights the requirement for a variable pitch coil geometry in order to sustain the post-acceleration over an extended coil.

The generation of high-order harmonics in ultraviolet spectral range by targets of periodic modulation interacting with relativistic, high contrast laser pulse (Iλ2= 1020W/cm2· μm2) was investigated experimentally and numerically. The spectral intensity of the 2nd- and 3rd-order harmonic emission from grating of different periodicities (250, 410, and 480 nm) is presented. The enhancement of the 3rd harmonic order compared with 2nd was observed for a grating of 480 nm periodicity. The experimental results indicate the role of the grating periodicity on the emission efficiency of different higher order harmonics in the UV spectral range. The higher order harmonics are emitted at the grating surface separated from the specular reflection of the laser pulse, due of the interference effects. In addition, 2D numerical PIC simulations demonstrate a complex angular distribution of the higher harmonics (HH) spectral intensity and confirm the strong dependence of the HH efficiency of a specific order on the grating periodicity, as observed experimentally. These special features of the high harmonic emission by periodically modulated targets open the route toward the control of HH spectral composition and of the emission efficiency of the lower order harmonics.

With the latest configuration, the Ti:Sa laser system ARCTURUS (Düsseldorf University, Germany) operates with a double-chirped pulse amplification (CPA) architecture delivering pulses with an energy of 7 J before compression in each of the two high-power beams. By the implementation of a plasma mirror system, the intrinsic laser contrast is enhanced up to $10^{-12}$ on a time scale of hundreds of picoseconds, before the main peak. The laser system has been used in various configurations for advanced experiments and different studies have been carried out employing the high-power laser beams as a single, high-intensity interaction beam ( $I\approx 10^{20}~\text{W}/\text{cm}^{2}$ ), in dual- and multi-beam configurations or in a pump–probe arrangement.

Magnetized laser-produced plasmas are central to many novel laboratory astrophysics and inertial confinement fusion studies, as well as in industrial applications. Here we provide the first complete description of the three-dimensional dynamics of a laser-driven plasma plume expanding in a 20 T transverse magnetic field. A continuous cryogenic hydrogen cluster-jet target has been developed for laser-plasma interaction studies, in particular as a source for the acceleration of protons. Major advantages of the cluster-jet target are the compatibility with pulsed high repetition lasers and the absence of debris. The cluster-jet target was characterized using the Mie-scattering technique allowing to determine the cluster size and to compare it with an empirical prediction. In addition, an estimation of the cluster beam density was performed. The system was implemented at the high power laser system ARCTURUS and first successful measurements show the acceleration of protons after irradiation by high intensity laser pulses with a repetition rate of five Hertz., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We report on the experimental observation of the instability of a plasma shell, which formed during the expansion of a laser-ablated plasma into a rarefied ambient medium. By means of a proton radiography technique, the evolution of the instability is temporally and spatially resolved on a timescale much shorter than the hydrodynamic one. The density of the thin shell exceeds that of the surrounding plasma, which lets electrons diffuse outward. An ambipolar electric field grows on both sides of the thin shell that is antiparallel to the density gradient. Ripples in the thin shell result in a spatially varying balance between the thermal pressure force mediated by this field and the ram pressure force that is exerted on it by the inflowing plasma. This mismatch amplifies the ripples by the same mechanism that drives the hydrodynamic nonlinear thin-shell instability (NTSI). Our results thus constitute the first experimental verification that the NTSI can develop in colliding flows. We report on the successful use of a laser-driven few-MeV proton source to measure the differential cross section of a hadronic scattering reaction as well as on the measurement and simulation study of polarization observables of the laser-accelerated charged particle beams. These investigations were carried out with thin foil targets, illuminated by 100 TW laser pulses at the Arcturus laser facility; the polarization measurement is based on the spin dependence of hadronic proton scattering off nuclei in a Silicon target. We find proton beam polarizations consistent with zero magnitude which indicates that for these particular laser-target parameters the particle spins are not aligned by the strong magnetic fields inside the laser-generated plasmas.

We present results of the first laser-driven proton acceleration experiment with two ultrashort laser pulses at the Arcturus laser facility in Dusseldorf. The Ti:sapphire laser provides two laser pulses (30fs, 2.3J; 30fs, 3.7J) which reaches focused intensities up to 1020 W/cm2. The second pulse has a contrast of 108 on a picosecond timescale. A plasma mirror enhances the contrast of the first pulse by three orders of magnitude on a picosecond timescale. The scheme of the experiment is as follows. The first laser pulse irradiates a thin foil and accelerates ions according to the target normal sheath acceleration mechanism. 10s of femtoseconds after the first pulse the second pulse is interacting with the expanding plasma and enhances the acceleration process of the ions. In the experiment the pulses were spatially overlapping on a 5μm thin Titanium foil. The delay between the pulses was varied from 10s to 100s of femtoseconds. As a main diagnostic a Thomson Parabola was employed in combination with a micro-channel-plate. In a second part of the experiment a time-and-space-resolved-interferometer (TASRI) was used to determine the electron density and temperature at the rear side of the foil with a 3μm spatial and 3ps temporal resolution. Two regimes were observed, which were only present in the two-beam configuration. One regime is dominated by a large number of different (up to 13) ion species - namely carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and titanium ions. But in this regime only a relatively low maximum proton energy was observed. In contrast to this is the other regime, where only a few weak ion species were present. In return protons with relatively high energy could be measured. The proton maximum cut-off energy in this regime was distinctly higher compared to the single-beam configuration. First simulations with the particle-in-cell code EPOCH indicate the enhanced acceleration mechanism is driven by a second push of the electrons from the second laser pulse.

International audience; Using ion carbon beams generated by high intensity short pulse lasers we perform measurements of single shot mean charge equilibration in cold or isochorically heated solid density aluminum matter. We demonstrate that plasma effects in such matter heated up to 1 eV do not significantly impact the equilibration of carbon ions with energies 0.045-0: 5 MeV/nucleon. Furthermore, these measurements allow for a first evaluation of semiempirical formulas or ab initio models that are being used to predict the mean of the equilibrium charge state distribution for light ions passing through warm dense matter. The acceleration of ions from ultrathin foils has been investigated by using 250 TW, subpicosecond laser pulses, focused to intensities of up to 3 X 10(20) W cm(-2). The ion spectra show the appearance of narrow-band features for protons and carbon ions peaked at higher energies (in the 5-10 MeV/nucleon range) and with significantly higher flux than previously reported. The spectral features and their scaling with laser and target parameters provide evidence of a multispecies scenario of radiation pressure acceleration in the light sail mode, as confirmed by analytical estimates and 2D particle-in-cell simulations. The scaling indicates that monoenergetic peaks with more than 100 MeV/nucleon are obtainable with moderate improvements of the target and laser characteristics, which are within reach of ongoing technical developments.

We report on the temporally and spatially resolved detection of the precursory stages that lead to the formation of an unmagnetized, supercritical collision-less shock in a laser-driven laboratory experiment. The measured evolution of the electrostatic potential associated with the shock unveils the transition from a current free double layer into a symmetric shock structure, stabilized by ion reflection at the shock front. Supported by a matching Particle-In-Cell simulation and theoretical considerations, we suggest that this process is analogeous to ion reflection at supercritical collisionless shocks in supernova remnants., 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Summary form only given. Collisionless shocks are relevant to a variety of astrophysical scenarios, such as the generation of highly energetic particles and cosmic rays during supernova explosions, and have recently been the focus of several laboratory plasma investigations employing high-power lasers. We present here a study of the generation and evolution of collisionless shocks in tenuous plasma, carried out at the VULCAN laser facility, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The shocks are generated during the expansion of a warm plasma, produced after the irradiation of a thin solid foil by a long (∼1ns) and intense (∼1015 W/cm2) laser pulse, into a tenuous (∼ 1016 cm−3), non magnetized background plasma. Shock structures are seen to develop at the interface between the two plasmas. The shocks are probed via a proton projection imaging (PPI) technique [1], which allows one to measure the electric field distribution at the shock front with high spatial resolution (∼ µm), and temporally resolve its propagation within a ps scale. The temporal evolution of electrostatic shocks in ambient plasma has been observed and the associated electric field has been reconstructed in a number of different conditions. In particular, we have identified in the data the transition from an unipolar field profile, typical of a double layer structure, into a bipolar electric field, and the subsequent formation of a collisionless, electrostatic shock. This structure is then seen to propagate in the ambient plasma with a Mach number ∼3.5. A PIC simulation supports the existence of high Mach number (∼3.3) shocks launched by collision of plasma clouds of equal electron and ion temperatures [2].

Harmonic generation in the limit of ultrasteep density gradients is studied experimentally. Observations reveal that, while the efficient generation of high order harmonics from relativistic surfaces requires steep plasma density scale lengths (${L}_{p}/\ensuremath{\lambda}l1$), the absolute efficiency of the harmonics declines for the steepest plasma density scale length ${L}_{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$, thus demonstrating that near-steplike density gradients can be achieved for interactions using high-contrast high-intensity laser pulses. Absolute photon yields are obtained using a calibrated detection system. The efficiency of harmonics reflected from the laser driven plasma surface via the relativistic oscillating mirror was estimated to be in the range of ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}--{10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$ of the laser pulse energy for photon energies ranging from 20--40 eV, with the best results being obtained for an intermediate density scale length.

When a laser pulse hits a solid surface with relativistic intensities, XUV attosecond pulses are generated in the reflected light. We present an experimental and theoretical study of the temporal properties of attosecond pulse trains in this regime. The recorded harmonic spectra show distinct fine structures which can be explained by a varying temporal pulse spacing that can be controlled by the laser contrast. The pulse spacing is directly related to the cycle-averaged motion of the reflecting surface. Thus the harmonic spectrum contains information on the relativistic plasma dynamics.

Absorption measurements on solid conducting targets have been performed in s and p polarization with ultrashort, high-contrast Ti:sapphire laser pulses at intensities up to 5x10{16}W/cm{2} and pulse duration of 8 fs. The particular relevance of the reported absorption measurements lies in the fact that the extremely short laser pulse interacts with matter close to solid density during the entire pulse duration. A pronounced increase of absorption for p polarization at increasing angles is observed reaching 77% for an incidence angle of 80 degrees . Simulations performed using a 2D particle in cell code show a very good agreement with the experimental data for a plasma profile of L/lambda approximately 0.01.

Close to solid state density plasmas with peak electron temperatures of about 190 eV have been generated with sub-10-fs laser pulses incident on solid targets. Extreme ultraviolet (XUV) spectroscopy is used to investigate the K shell emission from the plasma. In the spectra, a series limit for the H- and He-like resonance lines becomes evident which is explained by pressure ionization in the dense plasma. The spectra are consistent with computer simulations calculating the XUV emission and the expansion of the plasma.

Temporal evolution of plasma jets from micrometre-scale thick foils following the interaction of intense (3 x 10(20) W cm(-2)) laser pulses is studied systematically by time resolved optical interferometry. The fluid velocity in the plasma jets is determined by comparing the data with 2D hydrodynamic simulation, which agrees with the expected hole-boring (HB) velocity due to the laser radiation pressure. The homogeneity of the plasma density across the jets has been found to be improved substantially when irradiating the laser at circular polarization compared to linear polarization. While overdense plasma jets were formed efficiently for micrometre thick targets, decreasing the target areal density and/or increasing the irradiance on the target have provided indication of transition from the 'HB' to the 'light sail (LS)' regime of RPA, characterized by the appearance of narrow-band spectral features at several MeV/nucleon in proton and carbon spectra.

The extreme ultraviolet (XUV) emission from dense plasmas generated with sub-10-fs laser pulses with varying peak intensities up to 3*10^16 W/cm^2 is investigated for different target materials. K shell spectra are obtained from low Z targets (carbon and boron nitride). In the spectra a series limit for the hydrogen and helium like resonance lines is observed indicating that the plasma is at high density and pressure ionization has removed the higher levels. In addition, L shell spectra from titanium targets were obtained. Basic features of the K and L shell spectra are reproduced with computer simulations. The calculations include hydrodynamic simulation of the plasma expansion and collisional radiative calculations of the XUV emission., 22 pages, 11 figures.
