The fractured volcanic aquifer of the Abaya Chamo basin in the southern Ethiopian Rift represents an important source for water supply. This study investigates the geochemical evolution of groundwater and the groundwater flow system in this volcanic aquifer system using hydrochemistry and environmental tracers. Water types of groundwater were found to transform from Ca-Mg-HCO3 (western part of Lake Abaya area) to Na-HCO3 (northwestern part), from the highland down to the Rift Valley. Silicate hydrolysis and Ca/Na ion exchange are the major geochemical processes that control groundwater chemistry along the flow path. Groundwaters are of meteoric origin. The δ18O and δD content of groundwater ranges from −4.9 to −1.1‰ and –27 to 5‰, respectively. The δ18O and δD values that lie on the summer local meteoric water line indicate that the groundwater was recharged mainly by summer rainfall. δ13CDIC values of cold groundwater range from −12 to −2.7‰, whereas δ13CDIC of thermal groundwater ranges from −8.3 to +1.6‰. The calculated δ13CCO2(g) using δ13CDIC and DIC species indicates the uptake of soil CO2 for cold groundwater and the influx of magmatic CO2 through deep-seated faults for thermal groundwater. In the western part of Lake Abaya area, the shallow and deep groundwater are hydraulically connected, and the uniform water type is consistent with a fast flow of large gradient. In contrast, in the northern part of Lake Abaya area, water underwent deep circulation and slow flow, so the water types—e.g. high F− (up to 5.6 mg/L) and Na+—varied laterally and vertically.

The volcanic aquifer of Bilate river basin (BRB) that situated on the southwestern side of the MER serve as sole reservoir of water supply for urban and rural people found in the basin. This study investigates residence time and groundwater recharge process in the Bilate river basin. For the first time, this research work delivers information on the resident time and groundwater recharge on the basis of multi tracer approach (CFC’s, Cl, δ O and δD). The δ O and δD value of groundwater found in the range of -4.9 to -1.1‰ and -31 to 5.3‰, respectively. It is shown that stable isotopic value of groundwater drawn along or close to AAMWL and GMWL, indicates that groundwater recharge is of meteoric origin. The groundwater of BRB volcanic aquifer comprises substantial amount of CFCs concentration. It is observed from CFC data that the oldest component of groundwater was recharged prior 1950, while the younger component recharged in different time as of 1950. The relation found between CFC’s indicates that groundwater comprise mainly of binary mixture with young groundwater in the age of 20-25-year-old and that of groundwater older than 60 years. The fraction of young water in the groundwater ranges from 0.134 to 0.89 and shows decreasing trend from highland towards the rift. CFC-113 is conservative in the system and used to determine groundwater lifetime in the Bilate river basin that ranges from 26 to 63 years. The conservative chloride method i.e. chloride mass balance employed to Bilate river basin calculated yearly average groundwater recharge to be 219 mm/y which accounted for 21% of the mean annual areal rainfall. This research can help us better understand how groundwater circulation and recharge mechanism works, as well as how long groundwater stays underground in the complex hydrogeological setting of rift volcanic aquifer.

The main focus of the present research was to examine the appropriateness of groundwater resources for drinking purposes in the Bilate River Basin of Southern Main Ethiopian Rift, Ethiopia. The groundwater quality index (GWQI), fluoride pollution index (FPI), and human health risk were used to examine the human health risk factors associated with the intake of high fluoride groundwater. For this purpose, 29 groundwater samples were collected from the existing wells and were analyzed for various physicochemical parameters. The dominant cation was Na+, followed by Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+. The dominant anion was HCO3−, followed by Cl−, SO42−, and F−. The Gibbs plot shows that rock-water interactions are the dominant factor controlling the groundwater chemistry. By using the GWQI, the quality of groundwater samples was 31% excellent, 21% good, 31% poor, and 17% very poor. The fluoride concentration in groundwater ranges from 0.2 to 5.60 mg/L (mean, 2.10 mg/L). 59% (i.e., 17 wells) of the groundwater samples were not suitable for drinking, because they surpassed the drinking water quality limit of 1.5 mg/L. The remaining 41% (i.e., 12 wells) of the samples were suitable for drinking. The FPI indicates that 51.72% of the wells were highly polluted by fluoride. The noncarcinogenic health risk varies from 0.75 to 8.44 for children (83%), 0.34–3.84 for women (62%), and 0.27–3.01 for men (52%), which indicates that children are at higher health risk than women and men due to the physiological condition and the rates of ingestion.

We report Lithium (Li) concentrations and isotopic compositions for co-existing olivine, orthopyroxene (opx), and clinopyroxene (cpx) mineral separates from depleted and metasomatised peridotite xenoliths hosted by basaltic lavas from northwestern Ethiopian plateau (Gundeweyn area). The peridotites contain five lherzolites and one harzburgite and are variably depleted and enriched in LREE relative to HREE. In both depleted and enriched lherzolites, Li is preferentially incorporated into olivine (2.4-3.3 ppm) compared to opx (1.4-2.1 ppm) and cpx (1.4-2.0 ppm) whereas the Li contents of olivines (5.4 ppm) from an enriched harzburgiteare higher than those of lherzolites. Olivines from the samples show higher Li abundances than normal mantle olivines (1.6-1.9 ppm) indicating the occurrence of Li enrichments through melt-preroditite interaction. The average δ7 Li values range from +2.2 to +6.0‰ in olivine, from -0.1 to +2.0‰ in opx and from -4.4 to -0.9‰ in cpx from the lherzolites. The Li isotopic composition (3.5‰) of olivines from harzburgite fall within the range of olivine from lherzolites but the opxs show low in δ7Li (-2.0‰). Overall Li isotopic compositions of olivines from the peridotites fall within the range of normal mantle olivine, δ7Li values of ~+4±2‰ within uncertainty, reflecting metasomatism (enrichment) of the peridotites by isotopically heavy Li-rich asthenospheric melt. Li isotope zonation is also observed in most peridotite minerals. Majority of olivine grains display isotopically heavy cores and light rims and the reverse case is observed for some olivine grains. Orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene grains show irregular distribution in δ7Li. These features of Li isotopic compositions within and between grains in the samples reflect the effect of diffusion-driven isotopic fractionation during meltperidotite interaction and cooling processes.

The deeply buried river-connected Xishan karst aquifer (XKA) in western Beijing, China, has been suffering from diminishing recharge for several decades, which in turn leads to the disappearing of spring water outflows and continuously lowering of groundwater level in the area. Thus, it is important to correctly recognize the groundwater recharge and flow paths for the sustainable development of the XKA. To investigate these issues, the hydrochemical and isotopic compositions are analysed for both surface water and groundwater samples collected over an area of about 280 km2. Results show that (a) the river water is characterized by high Na contents; (b) the δ2H and δ18O values in the river water are distinctively higher than those of groundwater samples, after experiencing the long-time evaporative enrichment in the upstream reservoir; (c) the Sr concentrations and 87Sr/86Sr ratios of groundwater clearly indicated the interaction between water and carbonate minerals but excluded the water–silicate interaction; and (d) the groundwater samples in the direct recharge area of the XKA have the lowest Na concentrations and the δ2H and δ18O values. Based on the large differences in the Na contents and 18O values of groundwater and surface water, a simple two-component mixing model is developed for the study area and the fractions of the river water are estimated for groundwater samples. We find that the distribution pattern of the river water fractions in the XKA clearly shows a change of directions in the preferential flow path of the groundwater from its source zone to the discharge area. Overall, our results suggest that the recharged surface water can be a useful evidence for delineating the groundwater flow path in river-connected karst aquifer. This study improves our understanding of the heterogeneity in karst groundwater systems.

Detailed petrographical observations and in-situ major- and trace-element data for minerals from ten spinel peridotite xenoliths from a new locality in Gundeweyn area, East Gojam, have been examined in order to understand the composition, equilibrium temperature and pressure conditions as well as depletion and enrichment processes of continental lithospheric mantle beneath the Ethiopian plateau. The peridotite samples are very fresh and, with the exception of one spinel harzburgite, are all spinel lherzolites. Texturally, the xenoliths can be divided into two groups as primary and secondary textures. Primary textures are protogranular and porphyroclastic while secondary ones include reaction, spongy and lamellae textures. The Fo content of olivine and Cr# of spinel ranges from 86.5 to 90.5 and 7.7 to 14.1 in the lherzolites, respectively and are 89.8 and 49.8, respectively, in the harzburgite. All of the lherzolites fall into the lower Cr# and Fo region in the olivine–spinel mantle array than the harzburgite, which indicates that they are fertile peridotites that experienced low degrees of partial melting and melt extraction. Orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene show variable Cr2O3 and Al2O3 contents regardless of their lithology. The Mg# of orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene are 87.3 to 90.1 and 85.8 to 90.5 for lherzolite and 90.4 and 91.2 for harzburgite, respectively. The peridotites have been equilibrated at a temperature and pressure ranging from 850 to 1100 °C and 10.2 to 30 kbar, respectively, with the highest pressure record from the harzburgite. They record high mantle heat flow between 60 and 150 mW/m2, which is not typical for continental environments (40 mW/m2). Such a high geotherm in continental area shows the presence of active mantle upwelling beneath the Ethiopian plateau, which is consistent with the tectonic setting of nearby area of the Afar plume. Clinopyroxene of five lherzolites and one harzburgite samples have a LREE enriched pattern and the rest exhibit LREE depletion relative to HREE. These suggest that the lithospheric mantle of the Ethiopian plateau has experienced at least two major processes, specifically, partial melting and metasomatism that produce LREE-depleted and -enriched signature of continental lithospheric mantle, respectively. There is also no clear relationship between degree of LREE enrichment and petrography of the studied peridotite. Based on our data, we conclude that the lithospheric mantle beneath Gundeweyn has experienced melt extraction during and/or before pan-African orogeny and then interacted with various degrees of asthenospheric melt. The interaction is probably related to mantle upwelling, which is mainly focused beneath East Africa rift system (EARS).

Groundwater is the most important source of drinking water. Fluoride was found in high concentrations in the groundwater from deep wells of the water supply in the southern main Ethiopian rift. The high concentration of fluoride is dominantly geogenic rather than anthropogenic in origin, as the agricultural area was not found to be contaminated with NO3&minus, Knowledge of fluoride enrichment will help to provide management plans for developing deep groundwater and minimizing the health risks of exposure to fluoride. The chemical processes of fluoride were investigated in the waters in the Bilate River basin using hydrochemical and isotopic tools. The F&minus, concentration ranged from 0.5 to 1.29 mg/L in water from shallow wells and from 0.48 to 5.61 mg/L in water from deep wells. Seventy percent of deep well samples had F&minus, &gt, 1.5 mg/L higher than the World Health Organization potable guideline. The high fluoride concentration in the groundwater was mainly situated in the rift valley of the Bilate River basin, in contrast with low F&minus, groundwater in the highland. The concentration of fluoride was lowest in Ca-Mg-HCO3 type groundwater and highest in Na-HCO3 type groundwater. Moreover, F&minus, was positively correlated with HCO3&minus, Na+, Na+/Ca2+ and pH in groundwater and Na+/Ca2+ ratios were increased along the flow path. Hydrogeological, hydrodynamic and hydrochemical conditions are responsible for fluoride accumulation in the deep aquifers. Strong dynamic flow in highland areas flush away weathered chemical components (e.g., F&minus, ). Thus, surficial weathering is not a major controlling factor for high concentrations of Fluoride in deep groundwater but the combination of silicate hydrolysis and ion exchange mainly control fluoride enrichment in stagnant flow environments.
