This paper addresses the question of how to introduce basic artificial intelligence (AI) literacy skills to learners in higher education. It proposes that a feasible approach is to integrate AI literacy components into existing media and information literacy (MIL) programmes. The paper discusses elements of intersection between the two literacies, such as search techniques, evaluation, and responsible use of information. The author posits that the MIL curriculum needs to be updated by enhancing the intersecting elements and adding new concepts such as AI algorithm literacy, data literacy, AI ethics, and limitations of AI technologies. The author argues that libraries are best poised to take on the role of delivering basic AI literacy. To this end, MIL frameworks need to be reviewed, and librarians will be required to obtain additional skills through AI courses, workshops, and participation in communities of practice. Pioneering libraries such as the FIU Libraries (comprising the Green Library and Hubert Library) in Florida, US, and Massachusetts Library Systems are demonstrating that libraries have the capacity to deliver basic AI literacy to higher education learners. The author has analysed existing attempts at mapping AI literacy to the ACRL "Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education" and built on these initiatives by mapping suggested new AI literacy-related knowledge practices and dispositions to the relevant frames of the framework. The paper concludes by making a clarion call to librarians to rise to the occasion and revamp existing MIL programs to include basic AI literacy.

BACKGROUND: Drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) remains a public health concern in Kenya, with an estimated 2,500 individuals acquiring DR-TB annually. Despite significant progress in DR-TB management, the treatment success rate (TSR) in 2021 stood at 77%, falling short of the 85% target. This low TSR occurs amidst a complex range of treatment challenges, including psychosocial factors. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of integrating psychosocial and economic empowerment interventions into standard DR-TB care. METHODS: A convergent mixed-method approach was employed, involving interviews with 217 participants, including persons with DR-TB and key stakeholders, using a structured questionnaire. The study was conducted in Kenya’s two highest DR-TB burden counties between October and November 2023. RESULTS: The study found that 55% of respondents experienced psychological depression during treatment, with financial constraints identified as the primary trigger (70.6%). Only 49% of persons with DR-TB joined psychosocial support groups, and of these, 90% demonstrated improved treatment adherence. Additionally, individuals with DR-TB who participated in income-generating activities had a treatment adherence rate of 95%, compared to 88% among those not engaged in such activities. CONCLUSION: Patient-centred approaches involving socio-economic support systems are crucial in addressing treatment adherence barriers, thereby leading to improved treatment outcomes.

Semiconductor metal oxide gas sensors are widely used to detect ethanol vapours, commonly used in industrial productions, road safety detection, and solvent production; however, they operate at extremely high temperatures. In this work, we present manganese dioxide nanorods (MnO2 NRs) prepared via hydrothermal synthetic route, carbon soot (CNPs) prepared via pyrolysis of lighthouse candle, and poly-4-vinylpyridine (P4VP) composite for the detection of ethanol vapour at room temperature. MnO2, CNPs, P4VP, and MnO2 NRs-CNPs-P4VP composite were characterised using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Five sensors were prepared, namely, sensor 1 (MnO2-NRs), sensor 2 (CNPs), sensor 3 (CNPs-P4VP composite of a mass ratio of 1:3), sensor 4 (MnO2 NRs-CNPs-P4VP composite of a mass ratio 1:1:3), and sensor 5 (MnO2 NRs-CNPs-P4VP composite of a mass ratio 2:1:3). All the five sensors were used detect to 2-propanol, acetone, ethanol, methanol, and mesitylene vapours at room temperature, but among all the tested sensors, sensor 4 was highly sensitive to ethanol vapour and less sensitive to 2-propanol, methanol, acetone, and mesitylene vapours. The response and recovery time of sensor 4 towards ethanol vapour at 20.4 ppm were 82 seconds and 74 seconds, respectively. The limit of detection on ethanol vapour using sensor 4 was 789 ppb. During detection, the ethanol vapour undergoes total deep oxidation on the surface of sensor 4.

Background Given the low levels of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine coverage in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA), despite high levels of natural severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) exposures, strategies for extending the breadth and longevity of naturally acquired immunity are warranted. Designing such strategies will require a good understanding of naturally acquired immunity. Methods We measured whole-spike immunoglobulin G (IgG) and spike-receptor binding domain (RBD) total immunoglobulins (Igs) on 585 plasma samples collected longitudinally over five successive time points within six months of COVID-19 diagnosis in 309 COVID-19 patients. We measured antibody-neutralising potency against the wild-type (Wuhan) SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus in a subset of 51 patients over three successive time points. Binding and neutralising antibody levels and potencies were then tested for correlations with COVID-19 severities. Results Rates of seroconversion increased from day 0 (day of PCR testing) to day 180 (six months) (63.6% to 100 %) and (69.3 % to 97%) for anti-spike-IgG and anti-spike-RBD binding Igs, respectively. BACKGROUND: Developing a cure for HIV remains a global scientific priority. In 2022, the Females Rising through Education, Support and Health (FRESH) cohort launched an HIV cure-related trial involving an analytical treatment interruption (ATI) in Durban, South Africa. OBJECTIVES: To explore community perspectives about HIV cure-related research. METHODS: Between July-August 2022, we conducted three focus groups with community members. We transcribed audio recordings verbatim and used content analysis to analyze the data. RESULTS: Twenty community members (13 women and 7 men) participated in three focus groups (HIV status not included). Participants viewed HIV cure-related research as a way to address the issue of defaulting on (not taking) HIV treatment. Participants expressed hesitancy around ATIs, since these contradict longstanding treatment adherence messages. Participants shared concerns around the risk of side effects from experimental interventions balanced against potential efficacy. They advocated for trial participants to have the right to decide whether to inform their sex partners about their HIV status and ATI participation, rather than research teams making disclosure mandatory. Focus group participants also emphasized the importance of using simple language to explain HIV cure-related research. CONCLUSIONS: With HIV cure trials set to launch across Africa in the future, there is a critical need to better understand and respond to local community needs and preferences and to adopt this as standard practice prior to regional trial implementation.

Sustainable intensification schemes such as integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) are a proposed strategy to close yield gaps, increase soil fertility, and achieve food security in sub-Saharan Africa. Biogeochemical models such as DayCent can assess their potential at larger scales, but these models need to be calibrated to new environments and rigorously tested for accuracy. Here, we present a Bayesian calibration of DayCent, using data from four long-term field experiments in Kenya in a leave-one-site-out cross-validation approach. The experimental treatments consisted of the addition of low- to high-quality organic resources, with and without mineral nitrogen fertilizer. We assessed the potential of DayCent to accurately simulate the key elements of sustainable intensification, including (1) yield, (2) the changes in soil organic carbon (SOC), and (3) the greenhouse gas (GHG) balance of CO2 and N2O combined. Compared to the initial parameters, the cross-validation showed improved DayCent simulations of maize grain yield (with the Nash–Sutcliffe model efficiency (EF) increasing from 0.36 to 0.50) and of SOC stock changes (with EF increasing from 0.36 to 0.55). The simulations of maize yield and those of SOC stock changes also improved by site (with site-specific EF ranging between 0.15 and 0.38 for maize yield and between −0.9 and 0.58 for SOC stock changes). The four cross-validation-derived posterior parameter distributions (leaving out one site each) were similar in all but one parameter. Together with the model performance for the different sites in cross-validation, this indicated the robustness of the DayCent model parameterization and its reliability for the conditions in Kenya. While DayCent poorly reproduced daily N2O emissions (with EF ranging between −0.44 and −0.03 by site), cumulative seasonal N2O emissions were simulated more accurately (EF ranging between 0.06 and 0.69 by site). The simulated yield-scaled GHG balance was highest in control treatments without N addition (between 0.8 and 1.8 kg CO2 equivalent per kg grain yield across sites) and was about 30 % to 40 % lower in the treatment that combined the application of mineral N and of manure at a rate of 1.2 t C ha−1 yr−1. In conclusion, our results indicate that DayCent is well suited for estimating the impact of ISFM on maize yield and SOC changes. They also indicate that the trade-off between maize yield and GHG balance is stronger in low-fertility sites and that preventing SOC losses, while difficult to achieve through the addition of external organic resources, is a priority for the sustainable intensification of maize production in Kenya.

Endometriosis is a common condition associated with debilitating pelvic pain and infertility. A genome-wide association study meta-analysis, including 60,674 cases and 701,926 controls of European and East Asian descent, identified 42 genome-wide significant loci comprising 49 distinct association signals. Effect sizes were largest for stage 3/4 disease, driven by ovarian endometriosis. Identified signals explained up to 5.01% of disease variance and regulated expression or methylation of genes in endometrium and blood, many of which were associated with pain perception/maintenance (SRP14/BMF, GDAP1, MLLT10, BSN and NGF). We observed significant genetic correlations between endometriosis and 11 pain conditions, including migraine, back and multisite chronic pain (MCP), as well as inflammatory conditions, including asthma and osteoarthritis. Multitrait genetic analyses identified substantial sharing of variants associated with endometriosis and MCP/migraine. Targeted investigations of genetically regulated mechanisms shared between endometriosis and other pain conditions are needed to aid the development of new treatments and facilitate early symptomatic intervention.

Problem Considered: Burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing globally. We present chart analysis of data obtained during community screening for kidney disease between 2011-2021 in various parts of Kenya with objectives to document and stratify risks for kidney disease in the community. Methods: This was a descriptive analysis charts. Age, sex, individuals’ data on smoking, diabetes, hypertension, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), random blood sugar (RBS), dipstick urinalysis, as well as family history of CKD, hypertension and diabetes were analysed. Continuous variables had mean, standard deviation (SD), median and interquartile range (IQR) while frequencies for categorical variables were calculated. Results: About 10,675 individuals were analysed. Median age was 41 years (25 – 53). Females were 6,092(57.1%). Known hypertensive, diabetic and smokers were 2,028(19.0%), 881(8.3%) and 523(4.9%) respectively. Family history of hypertension, diabetes and CKD was reported by 3,810(35.7%), 2,751(25.8%) and 978(9.2%) respectively. In 10,121(94.8%) RBS was tested. About 470(4.6%) had RBS < 4.0 mmol/L, 9,298(91.9%) 4.0-11.0 mmol/L while 368(3.6%) was > 11.0 mmol/L. Incidental hyperglycemia was in129 (1.2%). Median SBP and DBP was 128 mmHg (116-143) and 78 mmHg (70 – 87) respectively. Mean BMI was 25.96±5.27 kg/m2. Subgroups with diabetes and hypertension had higher mean age, SBP, DBP and RBS, family history of hypertension, diabetes and CKD. Conclusion: Burden of risks for CKD in the community high. Blood sugar and blood pressure controls were suboptimal. There was concordance in the findings of hypotensive, diabetic and family history of similar conditions.

This paper describes a group of sixty (60) sub and extended chlorine oxide species with the general formulae of ClxOy (with x ≤ 2, y ≤ 8). Their role in water treatment cycles, behaving as key reactive species, is represented by a complex sequence of chemical inter-dependencies, exposed as a cohesive set of chemical reactions to demonstrate their cyclic role in aqueous media. An empirical/semi-empirical computational approach, supported by Ab Initio simulations, in accordance with open-shell character, has been followed to determine their optimum molecular geometries, to obtain their thermochemical properties. Besides a single molecular analysis, Grand Canonical Ensemble simulations, supported by a revised library of force field parameters, constituted a core component of the computational approach and proved to be invaluable in confirming thermochemical properties. This approach also offered finite estimates of optimum model sizes, a benefit with wider modelling application. Extended molecular species of ClO2 display a complex sequence of bonding character, with a variable charge dissipation (reported as partial charges), which complicates selection of basis sets in optimizing molecular geometries, during Ab Initio analyses.Optimum molecular geometries were obtained using Gaussian and MOPAC, which in turn resulted in reliable Heats of Formation. These correlated well with energies extracted from the open literature. Thermodynamic Analysis of the reaction of selected chlorine oxides with water using FactSage, predicted the production of known and two previously undetected chlorine species, [ClO4]- and [ClOH2]+.

The determination of dissolved gases (O2, CO2, CH4, N2O, N2) in surface waters allows the estimation of biological processes and greenhouse gas fluxes in aquatic ecosystems. Mercuric chloride (HgCl2) has been widely used to preserve water samples prior to gas analysis. However, alternates are needed because of the environmental impacts and prohibition of mercury. HgCl2 is a weak acid and interferes with dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Hence, we tested the effect of HgCl2 and two substitutes (copper(II) chloride – CuCl2 – and silver nitrate – AgNO3), as well as storage time (24 h to 3 months) on the determination of dissolved gases in low-ionic-strength and high-DOC water from a typical boreal lake. Furthermore, we investigated and predicted the effect of HgCl2 on CO2 concentrations in periodic samples from another lake experiencing pH variations (5.4–7.3) related to in situ photosynthesis. Samples fixed with inhibitors generally showed negligible O2 consumption. However, effective preservation of dissolved CO2, CH4 and N2O for up to 3 months prior to dissolved gas analysis was only achieved with AgNO3. In contrast, HgCl2 and CuCl2 caused an initial increase in CO2 and N2O from 24 h to 3 weeks followed by a decrease from 3 weeks to 3 months. The CO2 overestimation, caused by HgCl2 acidification and a shift in the carbonate equilibrium, can be calculated from predictions of chemical speciation. Errors due to CO2 overestimation in HgCl2-preserved water, sampled from low-ionic-strength and high-DOC freshwater, which is common in the Northern Hemisphere, could lead to an overestimation of the CO2 diffusion efflux by a factor of > 20 over a month or a factor of 2 over the ice-free season. The use of HgCl2 and CuCl2 for freshwater preservation should therefore be discontinued. Further testing of AgNO3 preservation should be performed under a large range of freshwater chemical conditions.

Veterinarians play a significant role in the treatment and prevention of livestock diseases at the farm level, safeguarding public health and ensuring food safety. In sub-Saharan Africa, access to quality veterinary services is a major challenge for livestock farmers due to the low number of publicly employed veterinarians, underfunding and privatisation of veterinary services. Low investment in veterinary services and infrastructure, including a lack of laboratories for diagnosis, has made veterinarians rely on their experience and knowledge of cattle disease symptoms developed over years of practice to diagnose and treat cattle diseases. A cross-sectional survey using a role-play approach was used to collect data on knowledge regarding cattle diseases among veterinarians in veterinary clinics and private practices in Addis Ababa, Oromia and Adama regions in Ethiopia. Veterinarians were given a number of disease scenarios based on “fictive disease symptoms” that are commonly manifested in a sick cow and asked to identify the disease what personal biosecurity they would use, diagnostic tests they would perform, treatments they would prescribe, treatment costs, and additional services and inputs they would recommend to the farmer. The results show that veterinarians could identify endemic cattle diseases through symptoms. The majority of veterinarians did not find it important to report notifiable diseases, a behaviour which could hamper disease surveillance and outbreak response. The advice and services the veterinarians said they would offer and recommend to farmers included improvement in feeding, vaccination, use of artificial insemination, and adoption of farm biosecurity measures that can reduce disease prevalence, and improve food safety, animal health and welfare. Low use of personal protective equipment and other protective biosecurity measures among veterinarians could expose them to zoonotic diseases. The study concludes that there is a need for increased funding for continuous training, improved access to animal health-related information, and investment in infrastructure such as laboratories to enable veterinarians to deliver quality animal health services.

Universities and colleges are often regarded as playing a key role in educating veterinarians and animal health workers who advise farmers on herd health and animal husbandry. However, to date, studies examining veterinary students’ knowledge of zoonotic diseases of public health importance and the source of this knowledge, as well as their preparedness to respond to these diseases, have focused on the Global North rather than the Global South. This study takes Ethiopia as a case study in exploring veterinary medicine students’ knowledge of zoonosis risks, infection control practices and biosecurity measures, recognizing that it is imperative to reconcile national-level veterinary education curricula with emerging global trends, such as One Health-focused training. This training advocates for a collaborative, interdisciplinary response at local, national, and international levels to the adverse impact of zoonotic diseases on animal health and productivity, and human and environmental health. Data for this study were collected through a pre-tested online questionnaire administered to 154 veterinary students from several universities in Ethiopia. The findings of this study suggest veterinary students were aware of the public health risks posed by zoonoses and the important role that collaboration between the disciplines of human and animal health can play in addressing zoonoses and emerging health risks. However, students demonstrated poor knowledge of the need to adopt infection control measures (ICPs) and biosecurity measures to reduce occupational risks and prevent within and between herd transmission of infection. Moreover, students’ vaccination rates against zoonotic diseases associated with occupational risks, such as rabies, were low. The results of this study suggest that there are currently gaps in Ethiopia’s veterinary curriculum and that enhancing veterinary students’ access to information regarding infection control practices and biosecurity measures could contribute to reducing their future occupational exposure to zoonoses. This study highlights the policy implications of the current veterinary medicine curriculum in Ethiopia and the scope for aligning the curriculum with important global initiatives, such as One Health-focused training.

BackgroundThe standard diagnosis of Ascaris lumbricoides and other soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections relies on the detection of worm eggs by copromicroscopy. However, this method is dependent on worm patency and shows only limited accuracy in low-intensity infection settings. We aimed to decipher the diagnostic accuracy of different antibodies using various Ascaris antigens in reference to copromicroscopy and quantitative PCR (qPCR), four months after national STH preventative chemotherapy among school children in western Kenya.MethodologySTH infection status of 390 school children was evaluated via copromicroscopy (Kato-Katz and mini-FLOTAC) and qPCR. In parallel, Ascaris-specific antibody profiles against larval and adult worm lysates, and adult worm excretory-secretory (ES) products were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Antibody cross-reactivity was evaluated using the closely related zoonotic roundworm species Toxocara cati and Toxocara canis. The diagnostic accuracy of each antibody was evaluated using receiver operating curve analysis and the correspondent area under the curve (AUC).Principal findingsAscaris was the predominant helminth infection with an overall prevalence of 14.9% (58/390). The sensitivity of mini-FLOTAC and Kato-Katz for Ascaris diagnosis reached only 53.5% and 63.8%, respectively compared to qPCR. Although being more sensitive, qPCR values correlated with microscopic egg counts (R = -0.71, PConclusionIgG1 antibody responses against adult Ascaris-ES products hold a promising potential for complementing the standard fecal and molecular techniques employed for monitoring Ascaris infections. This is of particular importance in the context of deworming programs as the antibody diagnostic accuracy was independent of egg counts.

ABSTRACTMicroorganisms regulate numerous ecosystem functions and show considerable differences along a latitudinal gradient. Although studies have revealed the latitudinal patterns of microbial community structure and single ecosystem function, the latitudinal patterns of ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) and how microbial communities affect EMF along a latitudinal gradient remain unclear. Here, we collected channel sediments, riparian rhizosphere soils, and riparian bulk soils from 30 rivers across China and calculated EMF using 18 variables related to nitrogen cycling, nutrient pool, plant productivity, and water quality. We also determined microbial diversity (taxonomic and functional) and microbial network complexity using metagenomic sequencing. The results showed that EMF significantly decreased with increasing latitude in riparian rhizosphere and bulk soils but not in channel sediments. Microbial taxonomic and functional richness (observed species) in channel sediments were significantly higher in the low-latitude group than in the high-latitude group. However, microbial co-occurrence networks were more complex in the high-latitude group compared with the low-latitude group. Abiotic factors, primarily geographic and climatic factors, contributed more to EMF than microbial diversity and network complexity parameters in which only betweenness centralization had a significant relationship with EMF. Together, this study provides insight into the latitudinal pattern of EMF in rivers and highlights the importance of large-scale factors in explaining such latitudinal patterns.IMPORTANCEEcosystem multifunctionality (EMF) is the capacity of an ecosystem to provide multiple functions simultaneously. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global concern. Interventions designed to prevent IPV are often participatory in nature, implemented in face-to-face settings and seek to create 'safe social spaces'. We however do not fully understand how safe social spaces can be created in online spaces. Our study sought to understand the possibility of creating safe social spaces online, supportive of participatory interventions, from the perspective of those developing and implementing IPV prevention interventions. We conducted in-depth interviews with a global sample of 20 researchers and practitioners. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic network analysis. We found mixed results about the possibility of creating safe social spaces online. Researchers and practitioners raised issues such as sharing of devices, the difficulties in developing trust and a sense of community online, challenges in having privacy and confidentiality online and difficulty in reading non-verbal cues as some of the key considerations when creating online safe social spaces. Younger researchers and practitioners were more optimistic about creating safe social spaces online. Our results show that the creation of safe social spaces online is complex and requires further investigation.

In sub-Saharan Africa, maize is one of the most important staple crops, but long-term maize cropping with low external inputs has been associated with the loss of soil fertility. While adding high-quality organic resources combined with mineral fertilizer has been proposed to counteract this fertility loss, the long-term effectiveness and interactions with site properties still require more understanding. This study used repeated measurements over time to assess the effect of different quantities and qualities of organic resource addition combined with mineral nitrogen (N) on the change of soil organic carbon (SOC) contents over time (and SOC stocks in the year 2021) in four ongoing long-term experiments in Kenya. These experiments were established with identical treatments in moist to dry climates, on coarse to clayey soil textures, and have been conducted for at least 16 years. They received organic resources in quantities equivalent to 1.2 and 4 t C ha−1 yr−1 in the form of Tithonia diversifolia (high quality, fast turnover), Calliandra calothyrsus (high quality, intermediate turnover), Zea mays stover (low quality, fast turnover), sawdust (low quality, slow turnover) and local farmyard manure (variable quality, intermediate turnover). Furthermore, the addition of 240 kg N ha−1 yr−1 as mineral N fertilizer or no fertilizer was the split-plot treatment. At all four sites, a loss of SOC was predominantly observed, likely because the sites had been converted to cropland only a few decades before the start of the experiments. Across sites, the average decline of SOC content over 19 years in the 0 to 15 cm topsoil layer ranged from 42 % to 13 % of the initial SOC content for the control and the farmyard manure treatments at 4 t C ha−1 yr−1, respectively. Adding Calliandra or Tithonia at 4 t C ha−1 yr−1 limited the loss of SOC contents to about 24 % of initial SOC, while the addition of sawdust, maize stover (in three of the four sites) and sole mineral N addition showed no significant reduction of SOC loss over the control. Site-specific analyses, however, did show that at the site with the lowest initial SOC content (about 6 g kg−1), the addition of 4 t C ha−1 yr−1 farmyard manure or Calliandra with mineral N led to a gain in SOC contents. The other sites lost SOC in all treatments, albeit at site-specific rates. While subsoil SOC stocks in 2021 were little affected by organic resource additions (no difference in three of the four sites), the topsoil SOC stocks corroborated the results obtained from the SOC content measurements (0–15 cm) over time. The relative annual change of SOC contents showed a higher site specificity in farmyard manure, Calliandra and Tithonia treatments than in the control treatment, suggesting that the drivers of site specificity in SOC buildup (soil mineralogy, soil texture, climate) need to be better understood for effective targeting management of organic resources. Farmyard manure showed the highest potential for reducing SOC losses, but the necessary quantities to build SOC are often not realistic for smallholder farmers in Africa. Therefore, additional agronomic interventions such as intercropping, crop rotations or the cultivation of crops with extended root systems are necessary to maintain or increase SOC.
