Mining is responsible for the release of metallic pollutants and radioactive materials into the environment, which have the potential to disrupt ecosystems and pose significant risks to human health. Significant mining activity is concentrated in the municipality of Caetité (northeastern Brazil), where Latin America's only active uranium mine and significant iron ore deposits are located. Although previous studies have shown that the regional soil and water resources are highly contaminated by various toxic elements and that exposure to these elements is known to have adverse effects on human health, the health risks in this mining region have never been assessed. The aim of this unprecedented comprehensive investigation was to assess the health, radiological and ecological risks in this mining region, which is home to nearly 100,000 people. To achieve our goal, soil and water samples were collected in the vicinity of the mines and in the main settlements in the region. Fifteen metallic toxic elements were determined using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry. The HERisk code, which follows the main methodological guidelines for risk assessment, was used to quantify human health, radiological and ecological indices. The average values of the total risk and cancer risk indices indicated that region falls into the moderate risk category (1.0 ≤ HI tot  < 4.0). However, 63% of the sites had high risk values, with Fe, Co and As being the metals contributing most to total and cancer risk, respectively. Near the mining areas, the potential ecological risk can be considered extreme (PERI ≥ 600). The values of the calculated radiological indices correspond to typical values ​​in natural uranium areas. However, in the communities near the mine, the dose values are slightly above the permissible limit (1 mSv y -1 ), so they must be continuously monitored, and risk mitigation measures must be taken., (© 2024. With looming global water-related issues, the monitoring of water quality for household and industrial consumption has become more pertinent. Rivers in nearby towns serve as primary water sources for Ekpoma town. 123 samples of stored river water were collected from 41 sampling locations and physical properties - pH, electrical conductivity (EC), salinity, temperature, and total dissolved solids (TDS) - were measured in situ using the Hanna edge® Multiparameter EC/TDS/Salinity Meter-HI2030. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) was used to detect and measure the concentration of potentially toxic metals (PTMs): Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. The measured concentrations were compared to the WHO, US EPA, and NSDWQ regulatory standards, and a spatiotemporal health risk analysis was performed using HERisk software. Twenty-five percent of the tested samples contained PTM concentrations within the allowable regulatory limits. Spatiotemporal health risk analysis showed that 98.8% of the cumulative carcinogenic risks (CRcum) were entirely from Pb contamination via oral ingestion. PTM concentrations in the samples suggest the degradation of river water quality due to agricultural activities, crude oil exploration activities, and soil composition in the region. Best management practices (BMPs) and treatment processes for the removal of detected contaminants are recommended to improve water quality.

The Brazilian coast is rich in monazite which is found in beach sand deposits. In this study, the composition of the monazite sands from beaches of State of Espírito Santo, Brazil, was investigated. The concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs), Th, and U were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In the studied region, the mean concentration of investigated elements increased in the following order: Tm < Yb < Ho < Lu < Eu < Er < Tb < Dy < U < Y < Th < Gd < Sm < Pr < Nd < La < Ce. The sampling sites were classified into three clusters and discriminated by the concentrations of REEs, Th, and U found. In general, the radiological risk indices were higher than the established limits, and the risk of developing cancer was estimated to be higher than the world average., (© 2022. Double pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (DP LIBS) has attracted much attention for analyzing trace elements due to its higher sensitivity when compared to single pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (SP LIBS). However, the development of quantitative methods in LIBS for the analysis of complex samples, such as sediments, is a great challenge due to the matrix effects that are very accentuated in this technique. In this study, different spectral treatments and calibration strategies were investigated to obtain calibration models that allow determinations with satisfactory accuracy and precision of Cr, Cu, and Ni in river sediments from different hydrographic basins. The best model developed for Cr was using MMC without spectral normalization and for Cu and Ni it was using MMC with spectral normalization, and using inverse regression, an increase in the accuracy of the determinations of all analytes was obtained. These models showed limit of quantification (LOQ) of 7.87 mg kg -1 , 1.62 mg kg -1 , and 2.21 mg kg -1 and root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 7.54 mg kg -1 , 14.53 mg kg -1 , and 8.29 mg kg -1 for Cr, Cu, and Ni, respectively. Therefore, the models have adequate sensitivity and precision for the quantification of the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) evaluated, since, according to Brazilian legislation, the lower concentration of threshold effect level (TEL) for Cr, Cu, and Ni is <37.3 mg kg -1 , <35.7 mg kg -1 , and <18 mg kg -1 , respectively. The concentrations of Cr, Cu, and Ni determined by DP LIBS allowed to obtain a partial ecological risk assessment of the studied sediments. Risk assessment is considered an essential tool to assist in the management and mitigation of polluted areas, especially those associated with economic activities that significantly degrade the environment, such as mining. However, most of the methodologies of risk assessment adopt the deterministic approach of using a fixed value for ascertaining the hazards derived from exposure to chemical pollutants. However, this is not the case of the Human, Ecological and Radiological Risk (HERisk) code, which allows space-time assessments of ecological, radiological, and human health risks. Indeed, this work aims to describe this new software (enhanced version of HHRISK), which not only improves the performance of the code but also increases its applicability and versatility. To showcase its usefulness in evaluating ecological pollution and human health risk were studied the contents of potentially toxic elements (Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in soils and surface waters from the nickel mining area in the municipality of Itagibá (Bahia, Brazil). The obtained results showed that metals are non-homogeneous distributed, suggesting the presence of local enrichment sources, mainly related to human activities. The statistical analyses carried out revealed that mining and agricultural activities are possibly responsible for the contents of these pollutants in both soils and surface waters. The calculated ecological indices of pollution confirmed anthropogenic pollution around the mining area, especially in the locations closest to sterile waste piles. The results of the human health risk assessment revealed that the ingestion of meat and contaminated water are the main routes for entering the potentially toxic elements to the human body and that Co is the chemical specie that poses the highest risk in the entire region. River sediments contain environmental fingerprints that provide useful ecological information. However, the geochemistry of River Atuwara sediments has received less attention over the years. One hundred and twenty-six sediments from 21 locations were collected over a two-season period from River Atuwara, and a detailed investigation of the land use and land cover (LULC) change between 1990 and 2019, analysis of selected toxic and potentially toxic metal(oid)s (TPTM) (Cu, As, Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr, Zn, Fe, Co and Al) using ICP-OES, pollution index assessment, potential source identification (using center log-transformation approach), potential ecological, and human health risk assessment were conducted. The results of the LULC change revealed that the built-up area increased by 95.58 km 2 , at an average rate of 3.186 km 2 /year over the past 30 years. The mean concentration of metal(oid)s increased in the order of Cd < As < Cr < Pb < Co < Ni < Cu < Zn < Fe < Al, and Cd < As < Cr < Co < Pb < Ni < Cu < Zn < Fe < Al during the dry and wet seasons, respectively. Meanwhile, the statistical analysis of the data spectrum inferred possible contamination from lithological and anthropogenic sources. According to the pollution load index, 90.48% of the sediment samples are polluted by the metal(oid)s. Potential ecological risk assessment identified Ni, As, and Cd as problematic to the ecological community of River Atuwara. Regarding the metal-specific hazard quotient via ingestion route, the risks are in order of Co ≫ As ≫ Pb > Cr > Cd > Al > Ni > Cu > Zn > Fe for both seasons and the carcinogenic risk for children via ingestion route presented a value higher than the safe limits for As, Cd, Cr, and Ni during both seasons. Over twenty thousand persons rely on water from Atuwara River for drinking and other domestic purposes, hence the need to ascertain the human health risk inherent in such practice. Seventy-two water samples were collected from River Atuwara during the dry and wet seasons of 2018, and the concentration of heavy metals (Pb, As, Ni, Cr, Zn, Cu, and Cd) were measured using ICP-OES. A newly developed human health risk assessment method, HHRISK code was used to estimate the health risks associated with consumption of water from Atuwara River. Results obtained revealed that the concentration of heavy metals in the river was as follows: Cd < Ni < Pb < Cr < Cu < As < Zn in the wet season and Cd < Pb < Ni < Cu < Cr < As < Zn during the dry season. Principal component analysis suggested that industrial effluents, agricultural activities and base-rock interaction are responsible for pollution of Atuwara River. The cumulative hazard index (HIcum) obtained was 678.0 ± 36.8 (for adult) and 1392.0 ± 132 (for child) for non-carcinogenic risks. A cumulative carcinogenic risk (CRcum) of 1.01E-1±5.26E-3 and 4.96E-2±5.05E-3 was obtained for adult and children respectively, suggesting that up to 1 in 10 adults and 1 in 20 children may suffer from cancer over their lifetime as a result of consumption and exposure to water from River Atuwara. Chemical environmental pollution is currently one of the most concerning environmental problem on a global scale, due to the high risks posed to ecological systems and human health. Risk assessment methodologies are valuable tools for preventive management and the mitigation of human health risks. However, the application of these methodological tools involves several steps and the knowledge of many variables, which can hinder its correct implementation. The main objective of this work was the development of the computational code for human health risk assessment: HHRISK (Human Health Risk). This code allows for an agile and accurate risk assessment based on the methodology established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA). Different from other published methods, the HHRISK code includes a new spatiotemporal matrix for the analysis of the aggregated risk (for multiple exposure pathways) and the cumulative (for exposure to multiple chemicals). HHRISK was applied to two case studies published dealing with the assessment of risk to human health through exposure to toxic metals, obtaining satisfactory results. The concordance between the average results obtained with the HHRISK and those reported by the authors confirm the validity of the implemented model. The inclusion of a greater spatiotemporal detail of the risks allowed to carry out a more accurate analysis and to propose new subsidies for a more efficient risk mitigation management by affected place and period of time., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc.
