The suppression of community knowledge and tradition has been so historically incessant for LGBTQIA* people and communities that it has become a formative force in the understanding of queer history. One mechanism forged by this network of erasure is 'queer aphasia.' This is a disconnect between the ability to see queerness and identify it as such--a stoppage in verbalization. A large number of refugees come to Canada every year, supporting the government's claims that they are encouraging of <> Nonetheless, the pervasiveness of racism and the paucity of research focused on the intersectional identity of Black refugee students raises several concerns, especially in light of the White savior myth that is embedded in a White society like Canada. Based on the ethic of hospitality, self-determination theory, and the tenets of critical race theory, this case study explored the hospitality of K-12 schools for Black refugee students in Manitoba. Through the voices of five students, this research demonstrates how students' needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competency were often threatened by racist (in)actions of teachers and classmates, thus negatively impacting their educational experience. A half-century ago, Dan Ben-Amos decried the incongruity between what he called localized 'ethnic genres' and analytical categories constructed by scholars. He called attention to native cultural expressions in their context. I suggest that balut-eating contests cannot be categorized simply with the analytical category of a festival game or a competitive-eating contest. Instead, it should be seen as a localized genre which communicates Filipino Americans' experiences and opposes the denigration of their cultural practices. In this article, I explore how the social contract of schooling and the three functions of schooling (Noguera 2003)--to sort, to socialize, and to control--impact and constrain the freedom and agency of a group of young Black and Latinx men in one suburban school district that was experiencing sociodemographic shifts in the Northeastern United States. I use qualitative data to frame how the young men experience schooling, and I show how the local community context facilitates the institutionalization of discriminatory sorting processes and racially prejudiced norms. I also show how the young men are excessively controlled and monitored via zero tolerance disciplinary practices, which effectively constrains their humanity and capacity to freely exist in their school and which inadvertently strengthens the connective tissue between schools and prisons. Widowhood is an under-recognized, albeit significant, aspect of life all over the world. The scant literature on contemporary narratives of widowhood among women as a consequence of conflicts indicates that this aspect of lived experience is relatively underexplored. Although loss is integral to life in the Nagorno-Karabakh region in the South Caucasus, it has been overlooked because of the unsettled politics in the region. Since the end of the full-scale war in 1994, the self-declared, internationally unrecognized republic has been locked in a protracted conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. This longstanding conflict has had severe consequences for society in this region. Sporadic clashes along the border of Nagorno-Karabakh (3) are not a rare occurrence. Thus, for women married to soldiers, confronting death is not something rare in the everyday life of the region. The purpose of this article is to examine the everyday experiences, understanding and reworking of widowhood there. The article is intended to open up the hitherto neglected subject of widowhood as affected by violent fighting in this part of the world and to create awareness of the importance of the topic.
