The purpose of this study was to report the distribution of mean ocular perfusion pressure (MOPP) and its associated factors in Chinese children.We enrolled 3048 grade 1 students and 2258 grade 7 students of the Anyang Childhood Eye Study in central China. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) were recorded with a digital automatic sphygmomanometer. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was assessed by a non-contact tonometer. MOPP was calculated as 2/3 × (DBP + 1/3[SBP - DBP]) - IOP. Risk factors for myopia were obtained through a questionnaire survey.The MOPP was 33.83 ± 6.37 mm Hg (mean ± SD) in grade 1, which was lower than 36.99 ± 6.80 mm Hg in grade 7 (P0.001). Compared with myopic eyes, non-myopic eyes had higher MOPP in grade 7 (37.72 ± 6.72 mm Hg versus 36.58 ± 6.57 mm Hg, P0.001) and in grade 1 (33.88 ± 6.29 mm Hg versus 33.12 ± 7.03 mm Hg, P = 0.12). Multivariable analysis showed that higher MOPP was associated with less myopia (P0.001), higher body mass index (BMI; P0.001), thinner central corneal thickness (P0.001), less time on near work (P0.001), and more time on sleeping (P = 0.04).MOPP was higher in children of older age, with higher BMI, less time on near work, and more time on sleeping, and was higher in eyes with less myopia.We found that MOPP might be an indicator for the detection of myopia development.

BackgroundThis study aimed to assess the prevalence and causes of vision loss in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in 2015, compared with prior years, and to estimate expected values for 2020.MethodsA systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the prevalence of blindness (presenting distance visual acuity In SSA, age-standardised prevalence of blindness, MSVI and MVI in 2015 were 1.03% (80% uncertainty interval (UI) 0.39–1.81), 3.64% (80% UI 1.71–5.94) and 2.94% (80% UI 1.05–5.34), respectively, for male and 1.08% (80% UI 0.40–1.93), 3.84% (80% UI 1.72–6.37) and 3.06% (80% UI 1.07–5.61) for females, constituting a significant decrease since 2010 for both genders. There were an estimated 4.28 million blind individuals and 17.36 million individuals with MSVI; 101.08 million individuals were estimated to have near vision loss due to presbyopia. Cataract was the most common cause of blindness (40.1%), whereas undercorrected refractive error (URE) (48.5%) was the most common cause of MSVI. Sub-Saharan West Africa had the highest proportion of blindness compared with the other SSA subregions.ConclusionsCataract and URE, two of the major causes of blindness and vision impairment, are reversible with treatment and thus promising targets to alleviate vision impairment in SSA.

Purpose To explore whether baseline visual impairment (VI) increases the risk of cognitive function impairment (CFI). Methods We conducted a population-based cohort study, with a six-year follow-up period. The exposure factor of interest in this study was VI. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used to assess participants’ cognitive function. The Logistic regression model was used to investigate whether baseline VI had an effect on CFI. Confounding factors were adjusted in the regression model. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to quantify the effect of VI on CFI. Results A total of 3297 participants were included in the present study. The mean age of included participants was 58.5 ± 7.2 years. Male accounted for 1480 (44.9%) of all participants. At baseline, 127 (3.9%) of the participants had VI. The MMSE score of participants who had VI at baseline decreased by 1.7 ± 3.3 points on average during the six-year follow-up, and that of participants who had no VI at baseline decreased by 1.1 ± 3.3 points on average. The difference was significant (t = 2.03, p = 0.040). Results of the multivariable Logistic regression model showed that VI was a risk factor for CFI, with an OR of 1.052 (95%CI: 1.014 to 1.092, p = 0.017). Conclusions Averagely, participants with VI experienced a decline in cognitive function 0.1 points faster per year than participants without VI, as measured by MMSE score. VI is an independent risk factor for CFI.

Background To investigate the incidence rate of high myopia and its risk factors in adults. Methods This was a population-based cohort study, 4582 adults aged ≥ 30 years from rural area of China were included. The follow-up duration was six years. Objective refraction (sphere, cylinder, and axis) was measured using an autorefractor. Multivariable Logistic regression was used to explore risk factors of high myopia, odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were reported. Results During the six-year follow-up, 25 participants developed high myopia. The incidence rate was 0.55% (95%CI: 0.44% to 0.66%), and were 0.54% (11/2035) in males and 0.55% (14/2547) in females. The age-gender standardized annual incidence rate was 0.11%. The median changes in spherical equivalent (SE) of all participants was 0.25D (IQR: −0.125 to 0.625). For the baseline myopic adults and non-myopic adults, the median changes in SE were 0.125D (IQR: −0.375 to 0.5), and 0.25D (IQR: −0.125 to 0.625). The difference was significant (p Conclusion The age-gender standardized annual incidence rate of high myopia in Chinese rural adults is 0.11%. More than 30% of adults still have myopia progression. Myopia control is of great significance for high myopia prevention.

To determine the 5-year incidence of primary glaucoma and its associated risk factors in rural northern China.Population-based cohort study. A total of 5184 participants aged 30 years and older, without glaucoma at baseline, were subjected to comprehensive standardized interviews and ophthalmic and systemic examinations at baseline and after a 5-year interval in the Handan Eye Study. Incident glaucoma was diagnosed by a consensus panel of five senior glaucoma specialists. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the baseline risk factors that could predict the incidence of glaucoma.During the 5-year follow-up, incident primary glaucoma developed in 82 subjects (1.6%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.2%-1.9%). The age- and gender-standardized incidence of glaucoma among subjects ≥40 years old was 2.1% (0.4% annually), calculated according to the 2010 Chinese census. A higher age (odds ratio [OR], 1.06; 95% CI, 1.04-1.09; p 0.001), higher intraocular pressure (IOP) (OR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.02-1.20; p = 0.017), and vertical cup disc ratio (VCDR) ≥ 0.60 (OR, 5.30; 95% CI, 3.22-8.73; p 0.001) were found to be associated with an increased risk of incident glaucoma. For each year, older age and each mmHg higher IOP, the risks of primary glaucoma increased by 1.2% and 2.0% per year, respectively.We reported the 5-year incidence of primary glaucoma in a rural Chinese population and found that older age, higher IOP, and VCDR ≥ 0.60 at baseline could help in identifying those at highest risk of disease development.

AIM: To examine the effects of sulforaphane on fibrotic changes of transforming growth factor (TGFβ2) induced human conjunctival fibroblast (HConFs). METHODS: HConFs were cultured and divided into control, TGFβ2 (1 ng/mL), sulforaphane and TGFβ2+sulforaphane groups. Cell viability and apoptosis were detected using the MTT and ApoTox-Glo Triplex assay. Cell migration was detected using scratch and Transwell assay. Real-time quantitative PCR method was used to evaluate mRNA expression of TGFβ2, matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP2), myosin light chain kinase (MYLK), integrin αV, integrin α5, fibronectin 1 and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). Background: Myopia has become a worldwide public health issue, which is occurring at a younger age, leading to an increased risk of high myopia. Ocular complications associated with high myopia can lead to irreversible vision loss. It is urgent and critical to explore effective treatment to slow down or even stop the progression of myopia in young children. Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the additive effects of orthokeratology (OK) and 0.01% atropine ophthalmic solution for myopia in children. Methods: We searched PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Web of science, Ovid, EBSCO host, CNKI, and CBM to collect eligible studies. Efficacy and safety were evaluated in terms of the axial length (AL), uncorrected distant visual acuity (UCVA), corneal endothelial cell density (CECD), and intraocular pressure (IOP). We calculated the weighted mean difference (WMD) and the 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of all outcomes and plotted on forest plots. Results: Four studies were ultimately included, involving a total of 267 subjects. This meta-analysis revealed that the mean AL of the subjects in the experimental group was 0.09 mm less than that of subjects in the control group (WMD = −0.09, 95% CI [−0.15, −0.03], p = 0.003). There was no significant difference in UCVA, CECD, and IOP between the 2 groups (WMD was −0.01 [95% CI: −0.03, 0.01], 11.75 [95% CI: −4.09, 27.58], 0.12 [95% CI: −0.40, 0.63], respectively). None of the studies reported severe adverse events. Conclusion: Our study suggests that the combination of OK and 0.01% atropine is more effective in slowing axial elongation than OK monotherapy in children with myopia in a relatively short duration of treatment. In addition, the combination therapy has no negative influence on UCVA, CECD, and IOP.

The three-phase solvent system counter-current chromatography has been of great research interest, because it can separate compounds with a wide range of polarity. The solvent system of n-hexane/methyl tert-butyl ether/acetonitrile/water (5:5:7:5, v/v) was used for counter-current chromatographic comprehensive separation of olive leaves. The study adopted the normal elution mode. The middle phase and the lower phase (at a volume ratio of 7:3) were pumped into the column simultaneously, followed by eluting with the upper, middle, and lower phases in sequence. The retention rate of the stationary phase measured by the experiment was 73.5%. The upper phase was used to elute the nonpolar compounds, then the mobile phase was switched to the middle phase to elute the moderately hydrophobic compounds, finally, the polar compounds were eluted by the lower phase remaining in the chromatographic column. This method successfully separated eight compounds in one step within 270 min and five compounds were identified. The logP values of these five compounds were 7.44, 7.86, 4.16, -0.11, and 0.96, respectively, covering a wide range of polarities. The present study demonstrated that the three-phase solvent has a strong extraction capacity for ingredients from extremely hydrophilic compounds to extremely hydrophobic compounds.

AIM: To assess the effect of 0.01% atropine eye drops on intraocular pressure (IOP) in myopic children. METHODS: A placebo-controlled, double-masked, randomized study. Totally 220 children aged 6 to 12y with myopia ranging from -1.00 to -6.00 D in both eyes were enrolled. Children were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to either 0.01% atropine eye drops or a placebo group using generated random numbers. All participants underwent the examination of IOP and cycloplegic refraction at baseline, 6 and 12mo. The change of IOP and the proportion of subjects with increased IOP in atropine and placebo groups were compared. RESULTS: Of 220 children, 117 were boys (53.2%). A total of 159 (72.3%) participants completed the follow-up at the 1-year study. At baseline, the mean IOP was 15.74 mm Hg (95%CI, 15.13 to 16.34 mm Hg) for the 0.01% atropine group and 15.59 mm Hg (95%CI, 15.00 to 16.19 mm Hg) for placebo group (mean difference, 0.14 mm Hg; P=0.743) after adjusting for central corneal thickness at baseline. At one year follow-up, the mean change of IOP was 0.16 mm Hg (95%CI, -0.43 to 0.76 mm Hg) for the 0.01% atropine group and -0.11 mm Hg (95%CI, -0.71 to 0.50 mm Hg) for placebo group (mean difference, 0.27 mm Hg; P=0.525) after adjusting for central corneal thickness. The 51.4% of children have increased IOP in the 0.01% atropine group, compared with 45.9% in the placebo group (P=0.511). CONCLUSION: The 0.01% atropine eye drops do not significantly affect the risk of elevated IOP. It is relatively safer to use in the studies that try to minimize myopia progression. However, a further long-duration study is required to be validated.

Introduction: To compare macular vascular microcirculation in early primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), normal tension glaucoma (NTG), and normal subjects. Methods: 99 patients with early glaucoma (99 eyes: 60 POAG and 39 NTG) and 78 normal subjects were included. All subjects underwent optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) scan at 6×6 mm macular area. Macular vessel density (VD) and perfusion density (PD) and 9 sectors were compared between the controls, POAG and NTG groups. Linear regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between VD and other variables including macular PD, signal strength (SS) and mean macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL) thickness. Results. Significant losses in total area of VD and PD were detected in POAG and NTG groups compared to the controls (all P < 0.01). There were no significant differences in all inner sectors of macular VD and PD between POAG and controls (all P >0.05). Except for outer-nasal sector, all other outer sectors of macular VD and PD were significant lower in POAG than in the controls (all P < 0.01). The inferior-inner sector and all outer sectors of VD and PD were significant lower in NTG than in the controls (all P < 0.01). Macular VD was significantly correlated with macular PD (r = 0.99, P < 0.001), SS (r = 0.60, P < 0.001) and mGCIPL thickness (r=0.51, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Macular microcirculation declined significantly in early POAG and NTG patients. Macular microcirculation loss in the NTG group was more central and nasal compared with that in the POAG group. A decrease in macular VD was correlated with lower macular PD, lower SS and thinner mGCIPL thickness.

To study the association of myopia progression with the morphological changes of optic disc and β-peripapillary atrophy (β-PPA) in 8-11 years old primary school students.This study was a prospective, school-based investigation. This study included 610 children (1008 eyes) who were continuously observed and had data available from 2016 to 2017 in the Sanhe Cohort Study of the Risk Factors for Myopia (SCSRFM). The children underwent a comprehensive eye examination including measurement of visual acuity, autorefractometry, and posterior segment of the eye. β-PPA regions and optic disc ovality index were identified and measured on the fundus photographs.The prevalence of myopia was 72.62% (732/1008) in 2016. In myopic children, the prevalence of the vertical β-PPA, the horizontal β-PPA, and the oval optic disc were 75.68% (554/732), 75.96% (556/732) and, 11.61% (85/732) respectively. From 2016 to 2017, with the progression of vertical β-PPA, horizontal β-PPA, area of β-PPA, and optic disc ovality index, the myopic diopter and the axial length (AL) were increased. The progression of horizontal β-PPA was significantly correlated with the progression of myopic diopter and AL (all p 0.05). The analysis on the distribution of progression rate of parameters in different groups found that the progression rate of horizontal β-PPA, area of β-PPA, and optic disc ovality index increased with the increase of the progression of diopter and AL. The progression of horizontal β-PPA, area of β-PPA, optic disc ovality index, and diopter in girls were greater than that in boys, and the progression of optic disc ovality index and diopter had a statistical significance (all p 0.05).The 1-year follow-up study of the third-grade primary school students showed that with the progression of myopia and the growth of AL, β-PPA and optic disc ovality index also changed. There was a positive correlation between the change of β-PPA and optic disc ovality index and the progression of myopia diopter and AL.

To determine the impact of visual impairment (VI) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and to compare the health burden of VI in different areas in mainland China.A cohort of 6830 people from rural villages and a cohort of 3251 people from an urban city were included to receive comprehensive ophthalmologic examinations and complete the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions 3 Levels (EQ-5D-3L) questionnaire. For urban and rural populations, a unified VI grouping standard was adopted: the eyes were classified into normal group, mild-moderate group, and severe group according to WHO standards, and then divided into 6 groups considering both eyes. We estimated the effects of VI on the EQ-5D index score using linear regression models and the association between VI and self-reported EQ-5D health problems using logistic regression models. Associations were assessed by the Spearman correlation coefficient.The prevalence of VI and the index scores of EQ-5D-3L for each subgroup of VI were higher for the rural cohort. In these two cohorts, the severity of VI in rural population (Spearman r = 0.205; p 0.0001) and urban population (Spearman r = 0.164; p 0.0001) is correlated with the EQ-5D index score. In the rural cohort, the difference in index scores with bilateral severe VI compared to those without VI, after adjusting for covariates, was - 0.053 for the rural cohort and - 0.084 for the urban cohort, respectively. In the rural cohort, the odds ratio for bilateral severe VI was 4.39 for mobility, 6.33 for self-care, and 5.88 for usual activities. The incidence of anxiety or depression and pain or discomfort in the urban cohort was greater; the OR for bilateral severe VI in the urban cohort was 4.75.VI has a negative impact on HRQoL in the rural and urban areas of China, especially in urban population. It is also more likely to cause anxiety or depression among the urban cohort, which deserves special attention.

Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of the Trabectome for Chinese glaucoma patients. Methods: This was a multicenter, retrospective, observational study. Glaucoma patients, except those with neovascular glaucoma, with/without a visually significant cataract were enrolled. The patients received Trabectome or a combined surgery with phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. The primary outcome evaluation was a reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP), and the secondary outcomes were a reduction in glaucoma medication, the 2-year success percentages, and complications. PURPOSE: To develop a classification and grading system for myopic maculopathy. DESIGN: Development and evaluation of a classification system for myopic maculopathy based on observational case series. METHODS: A comprehensive set of myopic macular lesions was defined via literature review and through consensus meetings among retinal specialists and clinician scientists. A classification of myopic maculopathy was formulated based on fundus photographs and a modified Delphi process and consensus. Inter- and intraobserver reproducibility, assessed as agreement (%) and weighted kappa values, were evaluated. One hundred retinal photographs with myopia and myopic macular lesions were selected from case series at the High Myopia Clinic of the Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo, Japan. RESULTS: We defined 5 categories of myopic maculopathy including "no myopic retinal degenerative lesion" (Category 0), "tessellated fundus" (Category 1), "diffuse chorioretinal atrophy" (Category 2), "patchy chorioretinal atrophy" (Category 3), and "macular atrophy" (Category 4). Three additional features to supplement these categories were defined as "plus" lesions, namely, lacquer cracks, myopic choroidal neovascularization, and Fuchs spot. Posterior staphyloma was considered as a further, important sign of myopic retinopathy. The intraobserver agreement was >= 85% and the corresponding weighted kappa statistic was >= 0.6 between observations. After a brief training session, interobserver kappa statistics reached the predefined satisfactory level (>= 0.4), considered as above moderate agreement. CONCLUSIONS: We propose a classification system for myopic maculopathy that was found to be reproducible. Applying a uniform classification in different studies will facilitate communication and comparison of findings from clinical trials and epidemiologic studies. (C) 2015 by Elsevier Inc. PubMed: 28779882, Background Global and regional prevalence estimates for blindness and vision impairment are important for the development of public health policies. We aimed to provide global estimates, trends, and projections of global blindness and vision impairment. Methods We did a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based datasets relevant to global vision impairment and blindness that were published between 1980 and 2015. We fitted hierarchical models to estimate the prevalence (by age, country, and sex), in 2015, of mild visual impairment (presenting visual acuity worse than 6/12 to 6/18 inclusive), moderate to severe visual impairment (presenting visual acuity worse than 6/18 to 3/60 inclusive), blindness (presenting visual acuity worse than 3/60), and functional presbyopia (defined as presenting near vision worse than N6 or N8 at 40 cm when best-corrected distance visual acuity was better than 6/12). Findings Globally, of the 7·33 billion people alive in 2015, an estimated 36·0 million (80% uncertainty interval [UI] 12·9–65·4) were blind (crude prevalence 0·48%; 80% UI 0·17–0·87; 56% female), 216·6 million (80% UI 98·5–359·1) people had moderate to severe visual impairment (2·95%, 80% UI 1·34–4·89; 55% female), and 188·5 million (80% UI 64·5–350·2) had mild visual impairment (2·57%, 80% UI 0·88–4·77; 54% female). Functional presbyopia affected an estimated 1094·7 million (80% UI 581·1–1686·5) people aged 35 years and older, with 666·7 million (80% UI 364·9–997·6) being aged 50 years or older. The estimated number of blind people increased by 17·6%, from 30·6 million (80% UI 9·9–57·3) in 1990 to 36·0 million (80% UI 12·9–65·4) in 2015. This change was attributable to three factors, namely an increase because of population growth (38·4%), population ageing after accounting for population growth (34·6%), and reduction in age-specific prevalence (?36·7%). The number of people with moderate and severe visual impairment also increased, from 159·9 million (80% UI 68·3–270·0) in 1990 to 216·6 million (80% UI 98·5–359·1) in 2015. Interpretation There is an ongoing reduction in the age-standardised prevalence of blindness and visual impairment, yet the growth and ageing of the world's population is causing a substantial increase in number of people affected. These observations, plus a very large contribution from uncorrected presbyopia, highlight the need to scale up vision impairment alleviation efforts at all levels. PubMed: 29032195, Background Contemporary data for causes of vision impairment and blindness form an important basis of recommendations in public health policies. Refreshment of the Global Vision Database with recently published data sources permitted modelling of cause of vision loss data from 1990 to 2015, further disaggregation by cause, and forecasts to 2020. Methods In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we analysed published and unpublished population-based data for the causes of vision impairment and blindness from 1980 to 2014. We identified population-based studies published before July 8, 2014, by searching online databases with no language restrictions (MEDLINE from Jan 1, 1946, and Embase from Jan 1, 1974, and the WHO Library Database). We fitted a series of regression models to estimate the proportion of moderate or severe vision impairment (defined as presenting visual acuity of 14% of blindness) as causes in the high-income subregions. Blindness and vision impairment at all ages in 2015 due to diabetic retinopathy (odds ratio 2·52 [1·48–3·73]) and cataract (1·21 [1·17–1·25]) were more common among women than among men, whereas blindness and vision impairment due to glaucoma (0·71 [0·57–0·86]) and corneal opacity (0·54 [0·43–0·66]) were more common among men than among women, with no sex difference related to age-related macular degeneration (0·91 [0·70–1·14]). Interpretation The number of people affected by the common causes of vision loss has increased substantially as the population increases and ages. Preventable vision loss due to cataract (reversible with surgery) and refractive error (reversible with spectacle correction) continue to cause most cases of blindness and moderate or severe vision impairment in adults aged 50 years and older. Lycium barbarum is a widely used Chinese herbal medicine prescription for protection of optic nerve. However, it remains unclear regarding the effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides, the main component of Lycium barbarum, on in vivo proliferation of adult ciliary body cells. In this study, adult rats were intragastrically administered low- and high-dose Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (1 and 10 mg/kg) for 35 days and those intragastrically administered phosphate buffered saline served as controls. The number of Ki-67-positive cells in rat ciliary body in the Lycium barbarum polysaccharides groups, in particular low-dose Lycium barbarum polysaccharides group, was significantly greater than that in the phosphate buffered saline group. Ki-67-positive rat ciliary body cells expressed nestin but they did not express glial fibrillary acidic protein. These findings suggest that Lycium barbarum polysaccharides can promote the proliferation of adult rat retinal progenitor cells and the proliferated cells present with neuronal phenotype.

Purpose: To describe the rationale, design, methodology and baseline characteristics of the Handan Eye Study (HES), a population-based study to determine the prevalence and impact of visual impairment and major ocular diseases in Chinese adults living in a rural region north China. Methods: Population-based, cross-sectional study. 6830 Han people aged 30 years and older from 13 villages of Yongnian County, Handan city, Hebei province, China were recruited. The interviews covered demographic, behavioral, and ocular risk factors as well as healthrelated and vision-related quality of life. Ocular examination included measurement of visual acuity (VA), intraocular pressure, anterior and posterior segment examinations, visual field testing, and anterior segment, fundus and optic disc photography/imaging. Physical examination included measurement of height and weight, blood pressure, electrocardiogram, fasting blood glucose, lipid levels, urea nitrogen and creatinine as well as tests of physical function including walking speed. Results: Of the 7557 individuals eligible for the Handan Eye Study (HES), 6830 (90.4%) subjects participated the study. The majority of participants were female (53.6%), the average (± standard deviation) age was 52.3 (± 12.3) years, and 100% were self-identified Han people. In contrast to the non-participants, those who participated were more likely to be female, elderly, married, and had more years of education (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The HES successfully examined over 90% of eligible Han Chinese adults aged 30 and older from a rural region of north China. Results from the HES will provide key information about the prevalence, risk factors, impact, and trends of ocular disease in rural regions of China.

To measure the macular pigment optical density (MPOD) in healthy Chinese people and patients with early age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Cross-sectional population based study. Demographic and lifestyle characteristics were ascertained by questionnaire. A food frequency questionnaire was completed for all participants. Participants underwent general physical and ophthalmic examinations and MPOD was measured by heterochromatic flicker photometry. Foveal architecture was measured by optical coherence tomography. MPOD of 225 participants (122 healthy and 103 early AMD) was 0.48±0.18. Patients with early AMD (0.52±0.19) tended to have higher MPOD levels than healthy people (0.47±0.17), but the difference was not statistically significant (P=0.06). Participants with carrot or corn oil intake every week tended to have higher levels of MPOD (P=0.002 and 0.008 respectively) while those with corn intake had relatively lower level of MPOD (P=0.01). MPOD increased with the center foveal thickness (P=0.01). Our findings show that there is no statistically significant association between MPOD and early AMD in the studied population. MPOD is related to center foveal thickness and diets would influence MPOD levels.

To determine the prevalence of ocular trauma and the proportion of blindness and visual impairment due to trauma in a rural population in northern China.The Handan Eye Study is a population-based cross-sectional study that surveyed 6830 Chinese people aged 30+ years from 13 randomly selected villages in Yongnian County, city of Handan, Hebei Province, in July, 2006. All participants underwent a standardized interview and extensive examinations. A structured questionnaire was used to collect information on ocular trauma.Of the 5837 participants who filled out the questionnaire, 124 subjects [2.1%; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.8%-2.5%] reported a history of ocular trauma in either eye, including 19 (0.3%) persons reporting trauma in both eyes. Men were more likely to have an eye injury than women [odds ratio (OR), 3.3; 2.2-4.9]. In multiple logistic regression models, ocular trauma was significantly more frequent among normotensive participants when compared with hypertensive participants (hypertensive vs. normotensive: OR, 0.6; 0.4-0.9) and among participants who had a history of falls (OR, 2.4; 1.2-4.8). The proportion of unilateral visual impairment and unilateral blindness due to trauma were 10.5% (13 subjects) and 21.0% (26 subjects), respectively.Our study reports the prevalence of severe ocular trauma among adults in rural China, revealing a high proportion of blindness and visual impairment due to trauma. These findings suggest the need for educational strategies to increase eye health awareness in this rural population with focus on providing at least appropriate first aid care to reduce blindness due to trauma.

Retinal degenerative diseases pose a serious threat to eye health, but there is currently no effective treatment available. Recent years have witnessed rapid development of several cutting-edge technologies, such as gene therapy, stem cell therapy, and tissue engineering. Due to the special features of ocular structure, some of these technologies have been translated into ophthalmological clinic practice with fruitful achievements, setting a good example for other fields. This paper reviews the development of the gene and stem cell therapies in ophthalmology.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness , second to cataract. Lowering intraocular pressure is the most effective therapeutic means for this disease, with prostaglandin analogs as the first-line medication. These drugs are efficacious and safe, with well-tolerated local adverse effects. They are also generally regarded to have almost no systemic untoward effect. Nonetheless, with the continuous rise in their popularity, systemic adverse effects caused by topical ocular use of prostaglandins have attracted increasing attention. These adverse effects include digestive, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems, as well as skin and hair. Although the incidence of these adverse effects is low, physicians need to be aware of their occurrence. Research progress of the prostacyclin class lOP-lowering medication side effects are reviewed.

These researches were concentrated in the following fields: the mechanism of glaucomatous optic neuropathy, study of the mechanism of elevated intraocular pressure and the regulation of intraocular pressure, Glaucoma gene research, Epidemiology study of glaucoma. Study of the visual pathway impairments of glaucoma. These studies represented the level of our national glaucoma specialists in the international glaucoma field and have become the landmark study of our specialists.

Promoting the control of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is most important prevention program of blindness in China. PACG has been incorporated into the prevention program of blindness in China based on the population-based screening studies. However, the clinical screening should be strengthened in POAG. The creation of a series of appropriate technologies suitable for glaucoma prevention and management has been achieved in China, especially for PACG. The technologies have been evaluated in the pilot areas and obtained very good results in China. It is recommended to develop new technology suitable for glaucoma management using the following workflow: research, development, and evaluation by large scale hospitals, and then clinical trial in the pilot areas. After a cost-benefit analysis is made, the new technology can be promoted and applied in clinical practice nationwide. We propose to gradually formed a strategical mode of "screening in township hospitals, intervention in county hospitals, and technical support and tackling in provincial hospitals" in order to improve the level of prevention and treatment of glaucoma and reduce the blindness incidence rate caused by glaucoma.

Elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) is a major risk factor for the development and the progression in glaucoma optic nerve damage. The reduction of IOP remains mainstream strategy of glaucoma therapy. A large fluctuation of IOP in the circadian rhythm may play a role in the optic nerve damage in glaucoma progression. IOP monitoring provides important information of IOP mean, peak and fluctuation to assist the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. With the development of technology, the commonly used methods of IOP monitoring including IOP measurement for diurnal, 24 hours, and habitual body position have evolved to continuous IOP-monitoring using novel device. The influencing factors including tonometer, body position and the light have been taken into account for the reliability of IOP measurement. In this review, we summarized the recent progress in IOP monitoring and the factors affecting the IOP measurements and discussed immense opportunity of IOP-monitoring to better diagnose and to treat for glaucoma.

Retinal ganglion cells (RGC) is only neuron in retina which mediate information from retina and project to the brain. Markers specific to individual retinal neuronal cell types have not been forthcoming, so the most general method remains neuronal morphology which is simple and observational. The synaptic connectivity and physiology characteristic can be described. The diversity of RGS is reviewed.

To evaluate the change of accommodation function after phakic posterior chamber implantable contact lens (PPC-ICL) implantation for high myopic eyes.It was a retrospective case series study. PPC-ICL implantation surgery was performed in 36 eyes of 18 high myopic patients. Uncorrected visual acuity, best-corrected visual accuracy, amplitude of accommodation, pupil distance were tested and AC/A was calculated before, one month and three months after operation. Rank-sum test and variance analysis test was performed for statistic study.Before surgery, long-distance best corrected visual acuity was 0.55 (0.20, 1.50) for left eyes and 0.60 (0.10, 1.20) for right eyes. One and six months after surgery, it was 0.80 (0.40, 1.20), 0.85 (0.50, 1.50) for left eyes and 1.00 (0.30, 1.50), 0.95 (0.30, 1.50) for right eyes, all were improved. The difference between left and right eyes was statistically significant (W value 6.36, 6.18, P0.05). One and six months after surgery, uncorrected close-distance visual acuity was 1.00 (1.00, 4.00), 1.00 (1.00, 3.00) for left eyes and 1.00 (1.00, 4.00), 1.00 (1.00, 4.00) for right eyes. The difference for both eyes was not statistically significant compared with preoperative(W value 1.61, 2.72, P0.05). At one and six months after surgery, amplitude of accommodation was (8.28 ± 2.12) D, (8.28 ± 2.16) D for left eyes and (8.58 ± 1.98) D, (8.49 ± 2.10) D for right eyes, much better than the result (6.78 ± 1.96) D and (6.69 ± 2.14) D before surgery. The difference was statistically significant (F = 4.36, P0.05 and F = 4.04, P0.05). At one and six months after surgery, near and distant AC/A ratio were (3.96 ± 1.37) , (4.22 ± 1.33) , (4.78 ± 1.06) and (5.04 ± 1.01) , higher than (4.87 ± 0.97) and (5.23 ± 0.92) before surgery. The difference of near and distant AC/A ratio was statistically significant (F = 3.31, P0.05 and F = 4.10, P0.05). At one month and six months after surgery, near and distant pupil distance was (58.72 ± 2.78) mm, (61.56 ± 2.50) mm, (58.56 ± 2.4) mm and (61.61 ± 2.52) mm, smaller than that of (59.78 ± 2.39) mm and (62.44 ± 2.48) mm before surgery, but the difference was not statistically significant (F = 1.28, P0.05 and F = 0.76, P0.05).Accommodation parameters after PPC-ICL implantation are improved obviously compared with those before surgery.

Optical Quality Analysis System II (OQAS, Visiometrics, Terrassa, Spain) that uses double-pass (DP) technique is the only commercially available device that allows objective measurement of ocular retinal image quality. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of spectacle lenses on the ocular optical quality parameters and the validity of the optometer within OQAS.Seventy eyes of healthy volunteers were enrolled. Optical quality measurements were performed using OQAS with an artificial pupil diameter of 4.0 mm. Three consecutive measurements were obtained from spectacle correction corresponding to subjective refraction and from the OQAS built-in optometer separately. The modulation transfer function cutoff frequency, the Strehl ratio, the width of the point spread function (PSF) at 10% of its maximal height (PSF10), and the width of the PSF at 50% of its maximal height (PSF50) were analyzed.There was no significant difference in any of the parameters between the spectacle correction and the optometer correction (all P0.05, paired t-test). A good agreement was found between both the methods and a good intraobserver repeatability in both the correction methods. Difference in best focus between two methods was the only parameter associated significantly with optical quality parameter differences. Best focus difference, built-in optometer correction with or without external cylindrical lens, and age were associated significantly with PSF10 difference. No linear correlation between refractive status and optical quality measurement difference was observed. A hyperopic bias (best focus difference of (0.50 ± 0.44) D) and a relatively better optical quality using spectacle correction in high myopia group were found.OQAS based on DP system is a clinically reliable instrument. In patients with high myopia, measurements using built-in optometer correction should be considered and interpreted with caution.
