To establish a correlation between the spin diffusion, the spin lifetime, and the electron density, we study, employing time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect microscopy, the spin polarization evolution in low-dimensional GaAs semiconductors hosting two-dimensional electron gases. It is shown that for the establishment of the longest spin-lifetime, the variation of scattering rate with the electron density is of higher importance than the fulfilling of the persistent spin helix condition when the Rashba $\alpha$ and Dresselhaus $\beta$ parameters are balanced. More specifically, regardless of the $\alpha$ and $\beta$ linear dependencies on the electron density, the spin relaxation rate is determined by the spin diffusion coefficient that depends on electron density nonmonotonously. The longest experimental spin-lifetime occurs at an electron density, corresponding to the transition from Boltzmann to Fermi-Dirac statistics, which is several times higher than that when the persistent spin helix is expected. Type I X-ray bursts are thermonuclear explosions on the neutron star (NS) surface caused by mass accretion from a companion star. Observations of X-ray bursts provide valuable information on X-ray binary systems, e.g., binary parameters, the chemical composition of accreted matter, and the nuclear equation of state (EOS) of NSs. There have been several theoretical studies to constrain the physics of X-ray bursters. However, they have mainly focused on the burning layers above the solid crust of the NS, which brings up issues of the treatment of NS gravitation and internal energy. In this study, focusing on the microphysics inside NSs, we calculate a series of X-ray bursts using a general-relativistic stellar-evolution code with several NS EOSs. We compare the X-ray-burst models with the burst parameters of a clocked burster associated with GS 1826-24. We find a monotonic correlation between the NS radius and the light-curve profile. A larger radius shows a higher recurrence time and a large peak luminosity. In contrast, the dependence of light curves on the NS mass becomes more complicated, where the neutrino cooling suppresses the efficiency of nuclear ignition. We also constrain the EOS and mass of GS 1826-24, i.e., stiffer EOSs, corresponding to larger NS radii, are not preferred due to too-high peak luminosity. Electron spin transport and dynamics are investigated in a single, high-mobility, modulation-doped, GaAs quantum well using ultrafast two-color Kerr-rotation micro-spectroscopy, supported by qualitative kinetic theory simulations of spin diffusion and transport. Evolution of the spins is governed by the Dresselhaus bulk and Rashba structural inversion asymmetries, which manifest as an effective magnetic field that can be extracted directly from the experimental coherent spin precession. A spin precession length L-SOI is defined as one complete precession in the effective magnetic field. It is observed that application of (a) an out-of-plane electric field changes the spin decay time and L-SOI through the Rashba component of the spin-orbit coupling, (b) an in-plane magnetic field allows for extraction of the Dresselhaus and Rashba parameters, and (c) an in-plane electric field markedly modifies both the L-SOI and diffusion coefficient. While simulations reproduce the main features of the experiments, the latter results exceed the corresponding simulations and extend previous studies of drift-current-dependent spin-orbit interactions., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2_xIrxAs2)5 shows that the Fe 3d electrons in the FeAs layer form the hole-like Fermi pocket at the zone center and the electron-like Fermi pockets at the zone corners as commonly seen in various Fe-based superconductors. The FeAs layer is heavily electron doped and has relatively good two dimensionality. On the other hand, the Ir 5d electrons are metallic and glassy probably due to atomic disorder related to the Ir 5d orbital instability. Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2_xIrxAs2)5 exhibits a unique electronic state where the Bloch electrons in the FeAs layer coexist with the glassy electrons in the Ir4As8 layer., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We have studied the nature of the three-dimensional multi-band electronic structure in the twodimensional triangular lattice Ir1-xPtxTe2 (x=0.05) superconductor using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and band structure calculation. ARPES results clearly show a cylindrical (almost two-dimensional) Fermi surface around the zone center. Near the zone boundary, the cylindrical Fermi surface is truncated into several pieces in a complicated manner with strong three-dimensionality. The XPS result and the band structure calculation indicate that the strong Te 5p-Te 5p hybridization between the IrTe2 triangular lattice layers is responsible for the three-dimensionality of the Fermi surfaces and the intervening of the Fermi surfaces observed by ARPES., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The effects of a new triple-$\alpha$ reaction rate (OKK rate) on the helium flash of a helium accreting neutron star in a binary system have been investigated. Since the ignition points determine the properties of a thermonuclear flash of type I X-ray bursts, we examine the cases of different accretion rates, $dM/dt (\dot{M})$, of helium from $3\times10^{-10} M_{\odot} \rm yr^{-1}$ to $3\times10^{-8} M_{\odot} \rm yr^{-1}$, which could cover the observed accretion rates. We find that for the cases of low accretion rates, nuclear burnings are ignited at the helium layers of rather low densities. As a consequence, helium deflagration would be triggered for all cases of lower accretion rate than $\dot{M}\simeq 3\times10^{-8} M_{\odot} \rm yr^{-1}$. We find that OKK rate could be barely consistent with the available observations of the X-ray bursts on the helium accreting neutron star. However this coincidence is found to depend on the properties of crustal heating and the neutron star model.We suggest that OKK rate would be reduced by a factor of $10^{2-3}$ for $10^8$ K in the range of the observational errors., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

In this cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy study we investigated various techniques to control the shape of self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) and wetting layers (WLs). The result shows that application of an indium flush during the growth of strained InGaAs/GaAs QD layers results in flattened QDs and a reduced WL. The height of the QDs and WLs could be controlled by varying the thickness of the first capping layer. Concerning the technique of antimony capping we show that the surfactant properties of Sb result in the preservation of the shape of strained InAs/InP QDs during overgrowth. This could be achieved by both a growth interrupt under Sb flux and capping with a thin GaAsSb layer prior to overgrowth of the uncapped QDs. The technique of droplet epitaxy was investigated by a structural analysis of strain free GaAs/AlGaAs QDs. We show that the QDs have a Gaussian shape, that the WL is less than 1 bilayer thick, and that minor intermixing of Al with the QDs takes place., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

The effect of disorder on the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of cuprate superconductors is examined. Disorder is introduced into the cation sites in the plane adjacent to the CuO$_{2}$ planes of two single-layer systems, Bi$_{2.0}$Sr$_{1.6}$Ln$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ and La$_{1.85-y}$Nd$_{y}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$. Disorder is controlled by changing rare earth (Ln) ions with different ionic radius in the former, and by varying the Nd content in the latter with the doped carrier density kept constant. We show that this type of disorder works as weak scatterers in contrast to the in-plane disorder produced by Zn, but remarkably reduces $T_{c}$ suggesting novel effects of disorder on high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. Coupling between electrons and phonons (lattice vibrations) drives the formation of the electron pairs responsible for conventional superconductivity. The lack of direct evidence for electron-phonon coupling in the electron dynamics of the high transition temperature superconductors has driven an intensive search for an alternative mechanism. A coupling of an electron with a phonon would result in an abrupt change of its velocity and scattering rate near the phonon energy. Here we use angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to probe electron dynamics -velocity and scattering rate- for three different families of copper oxide superconductors. We see in all of these materials an abrupt change of electron velocity at 50-80meV, which we cannot explain by any known process other than to invoke coupling with the phonons associated with the movement of the oxygen atoms. This suggests that electron-phonon coupling strongly influences the electron dynamics in the high-temperature superconductors, and must therefore be included in any microscopic theory of superconductivity., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on (La_1.4-xNd_0.6Sr_x)CuO_4, a model system with static stripes, and (La_1.85Sr_0.15)CuO_4, a high temperature superconductor (T_c=40K) with dynamic stripes. In addition to the straight segments near (pi, 0) and (0, pi) antinodal regions, we have identified the existence of nodal spectral weight and its associated Fermi surface in the electronic structure of both systems. The ARPES spectra in the nodal region show well-defined Fermi cut-off, indicating a metallic character of this charge-ordered state. This observation of nodal spectral weight, together with the straight segments near antinodal regions, reveals dual nature of the electronic structure of the stripes due to the competition of order and disorder.

The Nd-doped cuprate La_{2-y-x}Nd_ySr_xCuO_4 displays a first-order phase transition at T_d (= 74 K for x=0.10, y = 0.60) to a low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase. A magnetic field H applied || the a-axis leads to an increase in T_d, whereas T_d is decreased when H || c. These effects show that magnetic ordering involving both Nd and Cu spins plays a key role in driving the LTO-LTT transition. The Dynamical Franz-Keldysh Effect is exposed by exploring near-bandgap absorption in the presence of intense THz electric fields. It bridges the gap between the DC Franz- Keldysh effect and multi-photon absorption and competes with the THz AC Stark Effect in shifting the energy of the excitonic resonance. A theoretical model which includes the strong THz field non-perturbatively via a non-equilibrium Green Functions technique is able to describe the Dynamical Franz-Keldysh Effect in the presence of excitonic absorption., Comment: 4 pages in revtex with 5 figures included using epsf.
