15. Future Land Use and Flood Risk Assessment in the Guanzhong Plain, China: Scenario Analysis and the Impact of Climate Change.

Abstract

Continuously global warming and landscape change have aggravated the damage of flood disasters to ecological safety and sustainable development. If the risk of flood disasters under climate and land-use changes can be predicted and evaluated, it will be conducive to flood control, disaster reduction, and global sustainable development. This study uses bias correction and spatial downscaling (BCSD), patch-generating land-use simulation (PLUS) coupled with multi-objective optimization (MOP), and entropy weighting to construct a 1 km resolution flood risk assessment framework for the Guanzhong Plain under multiple future scenarios. The results of this study show that BCSD can process the 6th Climate Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) data well, with a correlation coefficient of up to 0.98, and that the Kappa coefficient is 0.85. Under the SSP126 scenario, the change in land use from cultivated land to forest land, urban land, and water bodies remained unchanged. In 2030, the proportion of high-risk and medium-risk flood disasters in Guanzhong Plain will be 41.5% and 43.5% respectively. From 2030 to 2040, the largest changes in risk areas were in medium- and high-risk areas. The medium-risk area decreased by 1256.448 km2 (6.4%), and the high-risk area increased by 1197.552 km2 (6.1%). The increase mainly came from the transition from the medium-risk area to the high-risk area. The most significant change in the risk area from 2040 to 2050 is the higher-risk area, which increased by 337 km2 (5.7%), while the medium- and high-risk areas decreased by 726.384 km2 (3.7%) and 667.488 km2 (3.4%), respectively. Under the SSP245 scenario, land use changes from other land use to urban land use; the spatial distribution of the overall flood risk and the overall flood risk of the SSP126 and SSP245 scenarios are similar. The central and western regions of the Guanzhong Plain are prone to future floods, and the high-wind areas are mainly distributed along the Weihe River. In general, the flood risk in the Guanzhong Plain increases, and the research results have guiding significance for flood control in Guanzhong and global plain areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

23. A bibliometric review on fluvial carbon fluxes during 1997-2022

Abstract

Fluvial carbon fluxes (FCFs) have attracted growing attention in recent decades due to its indispensable role in the global carbon cycle and budgets. To identify the major characteristics and evolutionary trends of FCFs related research, this study adopts a bibliometric method to analyze the publications retrieved from the database of Web of Science during 1997–2022. The information related to countries, institutes, authors, journals, collaboration, keywords and research trends is presented. Findings show that the publication number of FCFs related research had significant increase in the past 25 years. Science of the Total Environment, Biogeosciences and Journal of Hydrology were the most influential journals in this field. China, the USA and France ranked the top 3 countries in publication number. Previous studies concentrated on the source and fate, influential factors, process and estimation model of FCFs. The research trend of FCFs may focus on FCFs of Arctic rivers and their biogeochemical processes, the impact of human activities on FCFs, new techniques developed for FCFs research, and carbon exchange estimates across water-air interface. This study provides researchers with a better understanding of the current state of FCFs and serves as an effective reference for future studies.

30. A typological framework of non-floodplain wetlands for global collaborative research and sustainable use

Abstract

Non-floodplain wetlands (NFWs) are important but vulnerable inland freshwater systems that are receiving increased attention and protection worldwide. However, a lack of consistent terminology, incohesive research objectives, and inherent heterogeneity in existing knowledge hinder cross-regional information sharing and global collaboration. To address this challenge and facilitate future management decisions, we synthesized recent work to understand the state of NFW science and explore new opportunities for research and sustainable NFW use globally. Results from our synthesis show that although NFWs have been widely studied across all continents, regional biases exist in the literature. We hypothesize these biases in the literature stem from terminology rather than real geographical bias around existence and functionality. To confirm this observation, we explored a set of geographically representative NFW regions around the world and characteristics of research focal areas. We conclude that there is more that unites NFW research and management efforts than we might otherwise appreciate. Furthermore, opportunities for cross-regional information sharing and global collaboration exist, but a unified terminology will be needed, as will a focus on wetland functionality. Based on these findings, we discuss four pathways that aid in better collaboration, including improved cohesion in classification and terminology, and unified approaches to modeling and simulation. In turn, legislative objectives must be informed by science to drive conservation and management priorities. Finally, an educational pathway serves to integrate the measures and to promote new technologies that aid in our collective understanding of NFWs. Our resulting framework from NFW synthesis serves to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and sustainable use and conservation of wetland systems globally.

Abstract

Urban flooding is a perennial problem, especially in developing countries with relatively weak infrastructure under ever‐increasing stress due to climate change and human activities. We simulate the temporally variable flood‐water depth and inundation area under four designed rainfall patterns in the typical tropical rainforest city of Hue, Vietnam. The four rainfall types are R1 (peak at fifth hour), R2 (peak at 20th hour), R3 (peak at first hour), and R4 (peak at 13th hour). Results show that temporal rainfall pattern R4 with peak rainfall in the middle of the total period yielded the maximum water depth of 1.88 m. R3, with peak rainfall in the first hour, yields the shallowest maximum water depth and the largest inundation extent. When the water depth for R3 is 0.1–0.2 m, the inundated area caused by R3 is 3–4 times that of the other three patterns. Analysis of urban flood inundation in Hue provides a management tool to facilitate flood risk management in the context of extreme rainfall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
