The urban studies and planning literatures largely conceive of community organizations as either clients of neoliberal regimes or the advocates of marginalized communities. Whereas the first emphasizes structural constraints, the latter focuses on the conditions that permit organizations to exercise agency in planning arenas. This theoretical paper suggests that both frameworks reveal important mechanisms but belie the contradictory pressures facing community organizations. We turn to organizational and social movement literatures to argue that community organizations face two competing forces stemming from resource needs. First, they need money to maintain a staff and finance basic operations. As these are nonprofit organizations, money typically comes from external private and public grants. Second, for communities to support organizations and delegate them representative functions, the organizations need to be considered legitimate by the community. Though community organizations need both money and legitimacy, these resources conflict with one another. Too much dependency on external funders can undercut an organization's legitimacy to represent community interests in an autonomous and unconflicted way. Too much autonomy from external funders can enhance the legitimacy of organizations, but it can also result in financial destitution. Thus, rather than conceive of community organizations as structural puppets or the voice of the people, we suggest that most are positioned in a contradictory field that pulls them in conflicting directions. Neo-Institutional Theory assumes that there is homogeneity within and heterogeneity between organizational fields. However, institutional scholars prioritize in-field comparisons more than they do across organizational fields. Moreover, these comparisons have been made between exchange fields, or between exchange fields and issue fields. In this study, we compared charity markets described as interstitial issue fields based on 13 institutional infrastructure elements embedded within them, derived from the relevant theory and prior research findings. We conducted 44 in-depth interviews with experienced charity market organizers from 10 nonprofit organizations. Furthermore, four days of participant observation were conducted with field notes in each market lasted between 7-10 days. Data were analyzed with a directed content analysis technique adopting a deductive approach. Contrary to the basic premise of the Neo-Institutional Theory, we concluded that organizational fields could be isomorphic, just like organizations. This result is expected to present a new perspective on the theory’s basic assumptions.

This paper aims to identify the level of stress and the coping strategies used by local police officers within their service activities. We seek to explore how stress affects workers' functioning and which coping strategies are predominant. The main objective of this study is to identify and analyze the stress levels of employees and the coping strategies used in stressful situations. The research hypotheses presume significant correlations between stress levels and social interaction, avoidance, and the seeking of social support. Data analysis was performed using the SACS questionnaire for behavioral coping strategies and the Stress Perception Scale developed by Levenstein et al. (1993). The high level of stress was negatively correlated with social interaction and positively with avoidance and seeking social support. Increased stress levels lead to lower social interaction and higher levels of avoidance and seeking social support. The results of this research highlight the importance of the relationship between perceived stress levels and the coping strategies adopted by local police officers. It was found that stress levels are negatively correlated with the quality of social relationships and positively with the tendency to avoid problems and seek social support. These results underline the need to develop and implement effective stress management strategies within the organization to optimize employee performance and well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The literature on field-configuring events draws a contrast between ‘strong field mandate’ events, which play a dominant role in a field, and the ‘weak field mandate’ events held at the periphery. Irrespective of their type, three levers have been identified that enable field-configuring events to configure the field in which they occur: legitimacy, conformity to the rules and norms in force in the field, and power. Since, by their nature, weak field events do not have access to these levers, an essential question arises concerning how weak field mandate events can attempt to modify an organizational field. The study of ‘La Fête du slip’, an alternative pornography festival, identifies three actions that are undertaken in an effort to access these levers: (1) contributing to the emergence and structuring of the alternative pornography subfield, (2) driving communities (of practice, as well as epistemic), and (3) opening up to alternative events within the field as well as to other related and institutional fields outside the field. This work contributes to the literature by discussing actions that allow weak field events to access configurative levers in an attempt to change an organizational field.

Guided by institutional theory, this study examines how homophily and institutional power influence the tie formation and dissolution of interorganizational collaboration networks. The analysis focuses on longitudinal network data collected from 174 international non-governmental organizations and inter-governmental organizations (IGOs) whose mission and main activities revolved around HIV/AIDS and other related health topics such as substance use, alcohol use, and smoking. This study conceptualizes collaboration as an affinity communication network and uses Separable Temporal Exponential Random Graph Modeling to investigate the effects of organizational and sector level attributes. The results reveal the important role that homophily plays in terms of geolocation and topic alignment. Furthermore, the results show IGOs' role in driving these global partnerships. This article analyzes the recent 14th Five-Year Plan for Social Organization Development, which signifies the Chinese party-state’s comprehensive planning for NGOs in the years 2021–2025. By clarifying the guiding ideology, basic principles, goals, targets, and tasks, the Plan stresses a dual political–regulatory mechanism that drives China’s nonprofit sector further in transitioning from an emerging organizational field to a manufactured civil society and shifts nonprofit policy fragmentation toward institutionalization. The Plan manifests centralized means to corral NGOs into a disciplined and capable nonprofit sector that subordinates itself to and enhances the authoritarian regime. Implications drawn from this article update policy analysts on state-NGO relations and the trajectory of the nonprofit sector in China.

The relations among actors working to contrast gender-based violence against women remain a neglected topic in sociology, despite a general acknowledgment of the importance of building a solid network to fight this phenomenon. The aim of the paper is to fill this gap by using the concepts coming from neoinstitutionalism, in particular that of organizational field, to enlighten obstacles and potentialities of the creation of an anti-violence organizational field. To pursue this objective, using focus groups with workers of battered women's shelters, we focus on the empirical case of the city of Turin and its antiviolence field. The results show that the neo-institutionalist theory has a great potential to analyze and understand the relations among actors in the field of antiviolence, and that there are several obstacles to the possibility of structuring it. Moreover, on a local basis, despite the great efforts made by the city of Turin to institutionalize the field, the relations among actors engaged in contrasting violence against women continue to resemble more to a network of organizations than to an organizational field. This study aims to analyze the institutionalization of the organizational field of disaster risk management, at the local level, in Brazil. The research is developed through in-depth interviews. Data are interpreted using content analysis techniques. In particular, it appears that the civil defense units, in the organizational field researched, have structure and resources that are still inadequate and insufficient, lacking technical training and structure to develop the activity. There are entrepreneurial actions by the State, however, there is a need to foster partnerships with Education. Institutional legitimacy is still small in the social context in which it operates. There are no interfaces with urban planning for disaster mitigation. In this article I investigate how corporate Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) providers negotiate their position by contributing to a national ECEC policy development process. I discuss how their political engagement connects to changes in the institutional arrangements of the ECEC sector. The ECEC provider corporations’ written responses to a policy consulting process are obtained and analyzed in light of Bourdieu-inspired theories of institutonalized organizational fields. The proposed new regulations are both countered and reframed in their responses. Providers with corporate organizational structures in unison call for for firmer national guidelines on ECEC centre quality and funding. I interpret their responses as attempts to increase the relevance of ‘corporations’ capital’ over the raditional, local network embedded capital forms in quality ECEC provision. At this juncture, the corporate providers failed to shift competence from municipalities to national ECEC authorities The following parliamentary debate illuminates how non-profit provision in corporate organizational structures may appeal to left-wing parties rejecting commercial welfare provisions. A subgroup of for-profit corporate providers emphasizes sector cost-efficiency, connecting strongly to right-wing politicians’ ambitions to limit public spending. Corporate providers hence represent an impetus for institutional change, able to build allies across the whole left–right spectre of politics.

Organizational scholars are increasingly interested in understanding how ideas travel across an organizational field. While most studies focus on how travelling ideas translate into organizational practices, we lack insights into the broader issue of how ideas translate as they move among heterogeneous actors across the field. To explore this multidirectional travelling of ideas, we build on the notion of translation ecology to capture the ongoing interactions among field members as they are involved in translation work within and outside adopting organizations. To develop our argument, we draw from a longitudinal, 20-year case study of a public sector digital transformation programme in Denmark through which ideas about mobile technology use for caregivers spread across the entire homecare field. By following the mobile technology initiative over time, we show how ideas travelled in multiple directions as adopting organizations and other influential field actors participated in and contributed to diverse practices across organizations. Based on our analyses, we identify three distinct forms of multidirectional idea travelling – reinforcing, complementing and polarizing – and describe how they together shape the morphing of ideas as they move among heterogeneous actors in a translation ecology. This article examines how governance mechanisms were put in place in three organizational transformation projects undertaken in university hospital centers. Our focus is guided by a theoretical discourse on the place of rational choices on organizational design versus the desire to imitate other organizations. The article presents two complementary points of view: a longitudinal study and a recent a posteriori reflection with five key players. A first result highlights efforts invested in the preparation stages and that these nevertheless resulted in comparable performances: hence, the concept of equifinality. We shed new light on the processes through which institutions are created and changed by investigating the question how does institutional entrepreneuring unfold in an already organized world. We conducted a longitudinal case study of the field of scientific research production in Australia, which changed over three decades through entrepreneuring processes associated with the creation of a new 'Smart State' place in the city of Brisbane in Queensland. A new place is a form of organizing human activity that has materiality and meaning at a specific geographic location. Our findings showed how field change was interwoven with place creation through four processes of entrepreneuring: structural emancipation, dissociating and reimagining place meanings, bricolaging of place forms and co-evolving place identities. These entrepreneuring processes constituted the field as a flow of 'becoming' that spilled over into temporary and provisional settlements in local places. Our findings make important contributions through: (1) deepening understanding of how organizational fields change through multilevel, distributed, cascading and often unreflexive processes of entrepreneuring in an already organized world; (2) bringing attention to a relationship between institutions and place, in which place is both the medium and outcome of institutional entrepreneuring; and (3) providing new insight into embedded agency by illustrating how institutions in 'becoming' continually (re)produce the resources and possibilities for agency within gradual institutional change over time. The sociological approach of New Institutionalism premises that organizational responses to institutional demands depend on how the actors' networksare structured. This article proposes measures to assess the structural properties of the organizational fields of beef in Brazil and Argentina in two large producing regions, intending to evaluate their capacity to respond to the growing institutional demands of the agri-food sector. Four structural properties of networks were identified: openness, centralization, the density of central actors and their links with peripheral actors, and intermediation attributes. From these, a descriptive quantitative study was carried out based on primary and secondary data and analysis supported by the UCINET 6 software. It was mainly observed that both organizational fields are open to innovation, but the central actors are uncoordinated with few links touniversities and research centerswhile possessingdifferent characteristics to absorb and transfer demands and associate central and peripheral actors. The Knowledge Economy is sustained by a large and varied range of type of libraries (public-state or university library, private library...) whose missions and models of delivering services are increasingly challenging due to change in readings habits since many years, and more recently by the Covid-19 crisis. In such context, we look at this sector as an organizational field whose future we question in the light of social (in the habits of access and use of knowledge), technological and relational changes, and raising the following question: " how is the organizational field of libraries reconfiguring internationally and externally in 2030? ". We conduct a prospective study to look ahead to the expected evolution of libraries and the role they could continue to play to support education, culture, and economy (in 2030). We use the Delphi method in three steps (data collection, formulation of an initial set of projections from discussions with experts, interviews and focus-groups). We propose four scenarios, two of which are considered trend scenarios, extensions of current trends in which libraries are adapting to a changing environment. Our results show that, despite significant consequences, COVID-19 did not change the course of these two scenarios. The two other projections are seen as "disruptive" scenarios: one anticipates the marginalization of libraries, the other the breakdown of the library concept itself. The construction of a psychiatric modern hospital in the Department of Valle del Cauca (Colombia) between 1956 and 1961 implied important transfor-mations in the organizational field and in the system of beliefs on the mental health in the region. At the organizational level, the Board of directors of the Asylum managed to agglutinate efforts of private and public institutions in favor of the improvement of the attention of the mental patients. Likewise, with the support of the Department of Psychiatry of the Universidad del Valle, it changed the medical practice on the mental illness and did the new hospital a space with an organizational modern structure, with all the criteria and requirements for the specialists’ formation in psychiatry. In regard to the system of beliefs, new policies implemented on the mental health and the discovery of new treatments for dementia operated profound changes in the ways of understanding the disease. Following a line of historiographical research that used as a source the administrative file of the Hospital and medical histories, the present work describes the process of institutional change that took place in the asylum in its transition process of asylum to Psychiatric Hospital in Cali between 1956 and 1960

The concepts of social enterprise and social entrepreneur have been subject to growing interest in Hungary, but the field still lacks clear understanding and regulation. Still, in recent years, several key actors have appeared and have shaped the emerging organizational field in certain directions. Based on the theory of reflexive isomorphism, the present paper analyzes the approaches of these dominant actors in Hungary and also examines the interpretations of social enterprise practitioners. The research employs literature review to explore the main actors, approaches and narratives present, and the analysis of semi-structured interviews conducted in the spring of 2017 with 20 leaders of social enterprises to account for the experiences from practice. Through these methods, the influence of the dominant actors and discourses on the everyday operation and views of social entrepreneurs is discussed, which contributes to the understanding of the development of the social enterprise organizational field in Hungary.

Prior to the arguably superior double-entry system of accounting, single-entry accounting was used widely. Extant literature on single-entry accounting suggests it remained in use well after the advent of double-entry, with ease of use cited as a key reason. However, there may be other reasons which have not been revealed in the literature. This study explores how singleentry accounting was utilized at the Kelheim brewery in Bavaria, Germany during the seventeenth century. It finds an organizational field in which single-entry accounting was fit for purpose. Single-entry accounting provided sufficient information and accountability, implying the more sophisticated double-entry accounting system was not used although it was known in Germany at this time. Abstract: This study analyzes the importance of the geographical indication (GI) process and other efforts in favor of the institutionalization process of special coffee in Brazil. The study is justified by the fact that Brazil is a world reference in coffee production and in what refers to the special coffee production, the market is promising. The term special coffee has a connotation of a segment type where the quality and experience are privileged, this consumption being differentiated. The Northwest of Minas (MG), Alta Mogiana (SP) and Matas de Minas (MG) regions were chosen for the analysis, which are the most representative in the national scenario. The results show a positive advance in favor of the institutionalization process, in which the main agents involved play an important role, namely, the government, entrepreneurs and producers.

Abstract City-based organizations and governments play an important role in incorporating undocumented immigrant youth. This article investigates how localities socio-politically incorporate these immigrants by examining the governance constellations and institutional logics of the organizational field that manages undocumented youth. Comparing sets of municipal and civil society organizations in different national settings, I use the two cases of New York City and Paris to ask how the ‘city-based organizational field of immigrant incorporation’ shapes citizenship experiences of undocumented youth. Data come from multi-level longitudinal ethnography over 8 years with two dozen undocumented youth and with organizations in each city as well as interviews with immigrant organization staff and other governance actors in New York and Paris. Organizational field dynamics in Paris provide a stronger possibility of citizenship and rights acquisition, evidence of socio-political incorporation. In contrast, New York’s robust and flexible labor market and ethnic and immigrant legitimacy offer its undocumented youth a marginalized socio-political incorporation. These findings support practice-based understandings of local governance of incorporation of undocumented youth.

This article presents the results of a survey on banking culture in the Netherlands. It shows that despite behavioural regulation by the state, bankers continue to be driven by the underlying rationalization in the banking field which is characterized by utility maximization. Moreover, the downsizing of the sector has turned the incentives of targets from positive to negative, while distrust and lack of moral leadership further constrain bankers' use of their moral compass. An increase in state regulation leads to extensive compliance procedures but does not act as a support for ethical guidance in addressing client interests in a complex and uncertain environment. Bankers feel squeezed between increased legal constraints and ever more detailed rationalization in the banking field, which reduces the space to use their moral compass. This study argues that a change in banking culture should therefore address the field's rationalization itself, rather than adding more behavioural regulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The construction of a modern Psychiatric Hospital in the Department of Valle led to significant transformations in the organizational field and the belief system about mental health in the region. At the organizational level, the Board of Directors of the Asylum managed to unite efforts of private and public institutions to improve the care of the mentally ill. Likewise, with the support of the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Valle, the medical practice on mental illness changed, and the new Hospital turned into a space for the training of specialists in psychiatry. Regarding the belief system, new policies implemented by WHO on the mental health and the discovery of new treatments for dementia brought about profound changes in the ways of understanding the disease. Following a line of historiographical research that used the Hospital's administrative file as a source, this work describes the process of institutional change that took place in the Asylum in its transition process from Asylum to Psychiatric Hospital in Cali between 1956 and 1960. This article outlines the transformations in the maritime industry sector in Poland from the perspective of organizational sociology and maritime sociology. The author attempts to analyze the main tendencies of changes occurring in the Polish maritime economy in the recent decades, and special attention is paid to the phenomena of organizational field and organizational culture. The research results are based on the analysis of documents, literature, and interviews (IDIs). Whereas the situation of the Polish maritime industry during the communist regime is briefly described as the background for further considerations, the author focuses more on the last thirty years of Polish transformation (triggered by the Round Table talks in 1989) and the fifteen years of Poland's membership in the European Union.
