Abstract

This work explores the deployment of active reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (A-RIS) in integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (TN-NTN) while utilizing coordinated multipoint non-orthogonal multiple access (CoMP-NOMA). Our system model incorporates a UAV-assisted RIS in coordination with a terrestrial RIS which aims for signal enhancement. We aim to maximize the sum rate for all users in the network using a custom hybrid proximal policy optimization (H-PPO) algorithm by optimizing the UAV trajectory, base station (BS) power allocation factors, active RIS amplification factor, and phase shift matrix. We integrate edge users into NOMA pairs to achieve diversity gain, further enhancing the overall experience for edge users. Exhaustive comparisons are made with passive RIS-assisted networks to demonstrate the superior efficacy of active RIS in terms of energy efficiency, outage probability, and network sum rate., Comment: Accepted to WCNC 2025

Abstract

A potential candidate technology for the development of future 6G networks has been recognized as Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS). However, due to the variation in radio link quality, traditional passive RISs only accomplish a minimal signal gain in situations with strong direct links between user equipment (UE) and base station (BS). In order to get over this fundamental restriction of smaller gain, the idea of active RISs might be a suitable solution. In contrast to current passive RIS, which simply reflects and directs signals without any additional amplification, active RISs have the ability to enhance reflected signals by the incorporation of amplifiers inside its elements. However, with additional amplifiers, apart from the relatively complex attributes of RIS-assisted arrangements, the additional energy consumption of such technologies is often disregarded. So, there might be a tradeoff between the additional energy consumption for the RIS technologies and the overall gain acquired by deploying this potential advancement. The objective of this work is to provide a primary idea of a three-layer hybrid RIS-assisted configuration that is responsive to both active and passive RIS, as well as an additional dormant or inactive state. The single RIS structure should be capable of adjusting its overall configuration in response to fluctuations in transmit power and radio link quality. Abstract

The optimization of network performance is vital for the delivery of services using standard cellular technologies for mobile communications. Call setup delay and User Equipment (UE) battery savings significantly influence network performance. Improving these factors is vital for ensuring optimal service delivery. In comparison to traditional circuit-switched voice calls, VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology offers faster call setup durations and better battery-saving performance. To validate these claims, a drive test was carried out using the XCAL drive test tool to collect real-time network parameter details in VoLTE and non-VoLTE voice calls. The findings highlight the analysis of real-time network characteristics, such as the call setup delay calculation, battery-saving performance, and DRX mechanism. The study contributes to the understanding of network optimization strategies and provides insights for enhancing the quality of service (QoS) in mobile communication networks. Examining VoLTE and non-VoLTE operations, this research highlights the substantial energy savings obtained by VoLTE. Specifically, VoLTE saves approximately 60.76% of energy before the Service Request and approximately 38.97% of energy after the Service Request. Moreover, VoLTE to VoLTE calls have a 72.6% faster call setup delay than non-VoLTE-based LTE to LTE calls, because of fewer signaling messages required. Furthermore, as compared to non-VoLTE to non-VoLTE calls, VoLTE to non-VoLTE calls offer an 18.6% faster call setup delay. 7. Sampling Neural Radiance Fields for Refractive Objects

Abstract

Recently, differentiable volume rendering in neural radiance fields (NeRF) has gained a lot of popularity, and its variants have attained many impressive results. However, existing methods usually assume the scene is a homogeneous volume so that a ray is cast along the straight path. In this work, the scene is instead a heterogeneous volume with a piecewise-constant refractive index, where the path will be curved if it intersects the different refractive indices. For novel view synthesis of refractive objects, our NeRF-based framework aims to optimize the radiance fields of bounded volume and boundary from multi-view posed images with refractive object silhouettes. To tackle this challenging problem, the refractive index of a scene is reconstructed from silhouettes. Given the refractive index, we extend the stratified and hierarchical sampling techniques in NeRF to allow drawing samples along a curved path tracked by the Eikonal equation. The results indicate that our framework outperforms the state-of-the-art method both quantitatively and qualitatively, demonstrating better performance on the perceptual similarity metric and an apparent improvement in the rendering quality on several synthetic and real scenes., Comment: SIGGRAPH Asia 2022 Technical Communications. 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Abstract

Diabetes is associated with liver disease and risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. In this study, we evaluated the association between liver fibrosis measured by transient elastography and four glucose metabolism measures in the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort, a population-based, randomly selected cohort of Mexican American Hispanics with high rates of diabetes and liver cancer. We measured liver fibrosis (a risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma) in 774 well-characterized cohort participants using transient elastography. We evaluated the association of liver fibrosis with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood glucose, insulin, and insulin resistance using multivariable linear regression models. In multivariable models, log-transformed HbA1c had the strongest association with liver fibrosis (β = 0.37, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.04-0.69, P = 0.038), after controlling for waist circumference, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, liver fat, and other known confounders. The association was statistically significant among women (β = 0.33, 95% CI 0.10-0.56, P = 0.009) and similar but nonsignificant among men (β = 0.41, 95% CI -0.17 to 0.98, P = 0.593). Waist circumference, platelet count, aspartate transaminase, and liver steatosis were each associated with liver stiffness. Conclusions: Elevated HbA1c is associated with liver fibrosis, a key risk factor for HCC, particularly among women. Our results indicate that Mexican Americans with uncontrolled HbA1c may benefit from routine screening by liver elastography to identify individuals at risk of liver disease progression.

Abstract

Background & aimsHepatic fibrosis is a primary risk factor for cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, which affect a disproportionate number of Hispanics in the United States. We aimed to determine the prevalence of significant fibrosis, measured by point shear-wave elastography (pSWE), and determine characteristics of hepatic fibrosis and simple steatosis in a population-based study of Mexican American Hispanics in south Texas.MethodsLiver stiffness was measured by pSWE, performed by 2 separate operators, for 406 participants in the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort from 2015 through 2017. Significant fibrosis (F2-F4) was defined as median stiffness > 1.34 m/s. Steatosis was determined by ultrasound. All participants underwent a clinical examination that included a comprehensive laboratory analysis and standardized interview about their medical and social history. We calculated weighted prevalence of fibrosis and determined clinical and demographic associations with significant fibrosis (with or without steatosis) and simple steatosis with no/minimal fibrosis using multinomial logistic regression.ResultsFifty-nine participants were excluded due to unreliable pSWE findings or inconclusive ultrasound results, for a final analysis of 347 participants. The prevalence of significant fibrosis was 13.8%; most of these participants (37/42, 88.1%) had no evidence of viral hepatitis or heavy drinking. Levels of liver enzymes were associated with fibrosis and simple steatosis. Indicators of metabolic health (insulin resistance, triglycerides, and cholesterol) were significantly associated with simple steatosis. Fibrosis, but not simple steatosis, was significantly associated with of antibodies against HCV in plasma (odds ratio, 18.9; P = .0138) and non-significantly associated with reduced platelet count (odds ratio, 0.8 per 50x103/μL; 95% CI, 0.5-1.1). Multivariable analyses, as well as sensitivity analyses removing F4 fibrosis and viral or alcoholic etiologies, confirmed our results.ConclusionWe estimated the prevalence of fibrosis in a large population of Mexican American Hispanics using pSWE measurements. We found Mexican American Hispanics to have a higher prevalence of fibrosis compared to European and Asian populations, primarily attributable to metabolic disease.

27. Liu Tsung-chou (1578-1645) and his reconstruction of Ming neo-Confucianism

Abstract

Firstly, as a background to Liu Tsung-chou’s thought, this study documents the re-emergence of the School of Mind in the early Ming. It describes Ch’en Hsien-chang’s teaching of sitting in meditation and his doctrine of emphasizing tranquillity. The development of the School of Mind in the middle Ming is explicated by way of Wang Yang-ming’s doctrine of the extension of innate knowledge. The fictionalization of the School of Mind in late Ming is documented through a study of the doctrines propounded by Wang Yang-ming’s followers. Secondly, Liu Tsung-chou’s family background, early life, political career, and intellectual achievement are introduced. Finally, Liu’s contribution to the reconsideration of the doctrines of Mind in Ming Neo-Confucianism are investigated through a systematic study of his views on the existing schools. With reference to Ch’en Hsien-chang’s doctrine, I will discuss the doctrine of “emphasizing tranquillity” and the teaching of sitting in meditation in the Ch’en Hsien-chang School; the arguments regarding them in the Wang Yang-ming School; and Liu’s views on them. With reference to Wang Yang-ming’s doctrine, I will discuss Liu’s changing, attitudes towards Wang’s doctrine; the two men’s different attitudes towards overcoming selfish human desires and extensive learning; and the difference between Wang and Liu on the correct interpretation of the Great Learning. In my investigation of Liu’s reconsideration of the doctrines promoted by Wang Yang-ming’s followers, I will discuss Liu’s sense of the degeneration of Wang’s followers; the debates on Wang’s “Four Sentences of Teaching”; Liu’s criticism of Wang’s “Four Sentences of Teaching” and the debates on it; Liu’s criticism of the moral decay in the circle of Wang Yang-ming’s followers; and Liu’s scheme of moral reformation of his time. The study concludes with an assessment of the impact of Liu’s reconstruction of Ming Neo-Confucianism and its influence in the period from late Ming to early Ch’ing.

Abstract

Schizophrenia is a heterogeneous psychiatric disorder with a strong genetic basis, whose etiology and pathophysiology remain poorly understood. Exome sequencing studies have uncovered rare, loss-of-function variants that greatly increase risk of schizophrenia [1], including loss-of-function mutations in GRIN2A (aka GluN2A or NR2A, encoding the NMDA receptor subunit 2A) and AKAP11 (A-Kinase Anchoring Protein 11). AKAP11 and GRIN2A mutations are also associated with bipolar disorder [2], and epilepsy and developmental delay/intellectual disability [1, 3, 4], respectively. Accessible in both humans and rodents, electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings offer a window into brain activity and display abnormal features in schizophrenia patients. Does loss of Grin2a or Akap11 in mice also result in EEG abnormalities? We monitored EEG in heterozygous and homozygous knockout Grin2a and Akap11 mutant mice compared with their wild-type littermates, at 3- and 6-months of age, across the sleep/wake cycle and during auditory stimulation protocols. Grin2a and Akap11 mutants exhibited increased resting gamma power, attenuated auditory steady-state responses (ASSR) at gamma frequencies, and reduced responses to unexpected auditory stimuli during mismatch negativity (MMN) tests. Sleep spindle density was reduced in a gene dose-dependent manner in Akap11 mutants, whereas Grin2a mutants showed increased sleep spindle density. The EEG phenotypes of Grin2a and Akap11 mutant mice show a variety of abnormal features that overlap considerably with human schizophrenia patients, reflecting systems-level changes caused by Grin2a and Akap11 deficiency. These neurophysiologic findings further substantiate Grin2a and Akap11 mutants as genetic models of schizophrenia and identify potential biomarkers for stratification of schizophrenia patients.
