Abstract

The Acta Pekinensia is a Latin manuscript found in the Jesuit Roman Archives. It is a record of the papal legation to China of Charles Thomas Maillard de Tournon, from his arrival in China to his death in Macau.It was compiled by Kilian Stumpf, a German Jesuit missionary/scientist serving at the court of the Kangxi emperor of China. Stumpf was in a privileged position to record day by day the events of this crucial episode not only in the history of Christianity in China but in Chinese-Western relations. This annotated translation provides a full documentation and an acute and lively commentary on the clash of values which resulted in the failure of the legation and the condemnation of Chinese Rites.

Abstract

Max Charlesworth’s work in the late 1990s on ‘the scandal of religious diversity’ raises serious questions that have not yet been sufficiently recognized and certainly not resolved. How does ‘religion’ as a universal or at least very widespread phenomenon relate to the concrete world religions as institutions? This and other issues raised by Charlesworth are explored here: Are diverse ‘revelations’ incommensurable or is this the result of linguistic and cultural difference? Does relabelling such as ‘the Absolute’ or ‘Ultimate reality’ for ‘God’ resolve any difficulties? Is pluralism descriptive or prescriptive? The chapter concludes with an appraisal of Charlesworth’s unjustly neglected ‘Credo for the religious believer’.

Abstract

The Chinese Rites Controversy is a question that is as much ecclesiastical or missiological as sinological, and the researcher, therefore, has to attempt to embrace two very complex and demanding fields. It was, of course, an argument about cross-cultural understanding (and misunderstanding), and the peculiarities of Chinese religion and language; and an episode in the fraught historical relations between China and the West. But the controversy itself was ecclesiastical, among ecclesiastics, and it was the papacy and its offices which determined the outcome.
