Współczesny dynamicznie rozwijający się rynek gier i przemiany kultury gier ostatnich lat sugerują, że medium XXI wieku mogą zostać gry komputerowe. Przemysł gier ma wciąż potencjał rozwojowy, szczególnie w skali globalnej, biorąc pod uwagę takie regiony jak Ameryka Południowa, Afryka czy nowo uprzemysłowione kraje Azji Środkowej. Również baza konsumentów gier komputerowych rośnie, nie tylko dlatego, że grami interesuje się coraz więcej ludzi, ale również dlatego, że gry trafiają do grup społecznych, które kiedyś były wykluczone z uczestnictwa w tym typie rozrywki. Ponadto gry komputerowe stały się równouprawnionym elementem kultury rozrywkowej, o czym świadczy ich obecność w mediach i tekstach głównego nurtu. Artykuł przedstawia rozważania na temat elementów, które sprawiły, że gry komputerowe - w przeciwieństwie do ich niecyfrowych odpowiedników - cieszą się tak dużą popularnością. Artefakt gry komputerowej nie różni się na tyle od gry analogowej, by miało to znacząco wpłynąć na jego popularność. Jednakże jako produkt przemysłu medialnego oraz przedmiot systemu dystrybucji jest kompletnie innym towarem niż chociażby niecyfrowe narracyjne gry fabularne. Wreszcie same praktyki kulturowe powstałe wokół gier komputerowych angażują znacznie większe rzesze ludzi, głównie poprzez zakotwiczenie gier wideo w środowisku technologii komputerowych i internetowych. A dynamic growth of videogames market and a transformation of games culture in recent years suggest that videogames will be the most important medium of XXI century. In a global scale, the games industry has still a potential for a development, especially in regions such as Africa, South America and newly industrialized countries of Central Asia. Moreover, a consumers' base is growing as the game industry recognizes the potential of producing games for causal gamers. Games have also become an important element of contemporary culture and entertainment, as evidenced by their presence in mainstream media. This paper reflects on the elements that made the videogames much more popular than their non-digital counterparts. A computer game as an artifact does not differ significantly from an analog game to explain its bigger popularity as a medium. However, as a product of media industry, it is completely different. Finally, cultural practices themselves, created around computer games, engage much larger numbers of people, than those around non-digital games.

Nadrzędnym celem większości gier jest dostarczanie przyjemności, mimo to nierzadko zdarza się że jakiś element gry frustruje lub psuje rozgrywkę. Czasami element ten nie znalazł się tam przez przypadek lub błąd projektanta. Badacze gier, Staffan Björk, Chris Lewis i José P. Zagal, stworzyli koncepcję podstępnych wzorców projektowych (Dark Design Patterns) zdefiniowanych jako "schematy użyte świadomie przez twórcę gry, powodujące negatywne doświadczenie gracza, działające na jego niekorzyść i użyte najprawdopodobniej bez jego zgody". Podstępne wzorce projektowe w nieetyczny sposób wykorzystują zasoby gracza, monteralne, temporalne bądź społeczne. Celem poniższego artykułu jest krytyczne przedstawienie koncepcji podstępnych wzorców projektowych w grach komputerowych, jej źródeł teoretycznych oraz rozwinięcie jej na przykładzie wzorców w grach jednoosobowych. The most important goal of most games is providing pleasure, however, it often happens that some element of the game is frustrating or ruins the whole experience for the player. Sometimes it is not a coincidence or designer’s mistake. Game researchers Staffan Björk, Chris Lewis and José P. Zagal created the concept of Dark Design Patterns, defined as "schemes used consciously by the author of the game, which evoke a negative experience in the player, go against his interests and have probably been used without his consent". Dark Design Patterns use players resources in an unethical way - monteral, temporal or social resources. The article aims to critically present the concept of Dark Design Patterns in video games and its theoretical sources, as well as develop it based on one-player games.

Zjawisko cyfrowego wykluczenia seniorów pojawiło się i zaczęło nasilać na skutek rozwoju nowoczesnych technologii. Seniorzy jednak coraz częściej rozumieją potrzebę likwidowania cyfrowych barier poprzez uczestnictwo w różnego rodzaju kursach komputerowych, jakie są oferowane przez uniwersytety trzeciego wieku. Artykuł jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie o potrzeby i kompetencje seniorów w zakresie korzystania z nowoczesnych technologii, szczególnie internetu i urządzeń przenośnych. Składa się z pięciu części: wstępu teoretycznego na temat cyfrowego wykluczenia, kompetencji, uniwersytetów trzeciego wieku, wyników badań ankietowych i propozycji treści, które powinny znaleźć swoje miejsce w programach kursów i stanowić odpowiedź na potrzeby rozwijania kompetencji seniorów. Development and distribution of computer technologies introduced into our societies the digital exclusion of senior citizens. However, more and more seniors feel the need to gain digital literacy in order to enter the digital world. Wide range of various computer courses organized at the Universities of the Third Age help them to achieve the needed set of skills. The paper examines the digital needs and literacy of seniors. The theoretical introduction presents concepts of digital exclusion, digital literacies and Universities of the Third Age. Second part discusses results of a survey conducted at one of the workshops. As a summary the authors propose a thematic categorization of the digital literacy related content that would correspond to senior needs and could be taught at an University of the Third Age.

Rules and narratives in video games had a complicated relationship for many years. In game studies this conflict became evident in ludology versus narratology debate, in video game culture critics and players talk about ludo-narrative dissonance. Both of those phenomena express the popular belief that rules and story in videogames oppose each other, that strategic or tactical engagement and narrative immersion cannot coexist in one game. The following article confronts the problem of, supposedly, opposing types of engagement. To understand different aspects of engagement several concepts of immersion are recalled, beginning with those rooted in literary studies by Janet H. Murray, Marie-Laure Ryan and Katarzyna Prajzner, through game specific concept of Laura Ermi and Frans Mäyrä to post-immersion concepts of Gordon Calleja. In the next section of the paper two analyses of specific types of engagement are presented: game formal system engagement in Angry Birds [Rovio Entertainment, 2009] and narrative immersion in The Walking Dead series [Telltale Games, 2012]. The article concludes with a list of mechanical features of a video game that facilitates either engagement in formal system of the game or game’s narrative.

Jedną z najważniejszych przyjemności gier RPG jest możliwość wcielania się w wyobrażone postaci. Proces kreowania i rozwijania ich tożsamości będzie określał charakter danej gry. W poniższym artykule chcę przyjrzeć się możliwościom konstruowania tożsamości bohatera gracza, jakie projektanci implementują w systemach reguł gier. W dyskusji o elementach reprezentacji postaci, a najczęściej w takich kategoriach przedstawia się tożsamość bohaterów, nierzadko zapomina się o wymiarze mechanicznym gry. Mój artykuł skupia się na warstwie zasad i reguł kreacji oraz rozwoju postaci dwóch systemów RPG. Za przykład posłuży klasyczna gra Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 oraz bardziej współczesna Klanarchia. Materiałami do analizy będą karty postaci obu systemów oraz fragmenty podręczników. Posłużę się językiem opisu reguł gier Miguela Sicarta oraz ludologiczną perspektywą takich autorów jak Jesper Juul i Espen Aarseth, a także popularną wśród projektantów gier fabularnych tzw. teorią GNS. Wyniki badania zasad obu gier pozwolą zrozumieć sposoby budowania tożsamości mechanicznej bohatera gracza oraz ich związek ze stylem zabawy, jakie proponuje każdy z przywoływanych tytułów. One of the biggest pleasures of role-playing games is the possibility to play as a fictional character. The character creation and development processes constitute the identity of a given game. In this paper, I want to observe and describe the possibilities of building character identity through rule system. In the discussion about the elements of representation of a given game character, often its mechanical side is ignored. This paper concentrates on the character creation and development processes of two tabletop RPG games. As an example I’ve chosen a classic – Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 and a more modern Polish system – Klanarchia. The materials for the analysis will be character sheets and rulebooks for both games. I will use the game elements terminology of M. Sicart, the ludological perspective of authors like J. Juul and E. Aarseth, and also the GNS theory, popular amongst RPG designers. The results of the game rules study will serve the better understanding of different ways for mechanical character identity creation and its relationship to the style in which the games are designed.

Analizy formalne gier służą zarówno publicystom piszącym teksty krytyczne o grach, jak i twórcom doskonalącym swój warsztat na podstawie wydanych już tytułów. Jednakże dyscyplina game studies wytworzyła niewiele narzędzi badawczych służących całościowej analizie gier komputerowych. Prezentowany tekst ma na celu przybliżenie struktury MDA (Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetics) – formalnej metody służącej projektowaniu i badaniu gier stworzonej przez Robin Hunicke, Marca LeBlanca i Roberta Zubeka. Za obiekt analizy służy polska gra przygodowa The Vanishing of Ethan Carter studia The Astronauts. W pracy analizuję relację systemu reguł gry (mechanics), wynikających z tego wzorów interakcji gracz-gra (dynamics) oraz warstwy estetycznej (aesthetics) z przyjemnościami, jakie gracz czerpie z gry. Posiłkując się kategoriami L. Konzacka, metodami badań gier M. Consalvo i N. Duttona oraz zmodyfikowaną na potrzeby użytku na gruncie polskim strukturą MDA, przedstawiam możliwości strukturalnej analizy systemu reguł gry. Artykuł ma na celu prezentację i ocenę struktury MDA, a także jej wprowadzenie do polskiej ludologii. The formal analysis of games is used by both game journalists writing their critiques and game designers dismantling titles already published. However, game studies have not created many tools for the complete analysis of game systems. This article aims to introduce the MDA (Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetics) structure – a formal method for game research and design created by Robin Hunicke, Marc LeBlanc and Robert Zubek. The object of analysis will be a recently published Polish adventure game - The Vanishing of Ethan Carter from the studio The Astronauts. In this paper I will analyze the relations between the mechanics system, human-game interactions (dynamics), aesthetics of the game and the types of pleasure the game is offering. With the help of L. Konzack’s categories, research methods of M. Consalvo and N. Dutton and MDA structure modified for the Polish user, I will present the possibilities of formal analysis of the game rules system. The paper aims to present, evaluate and introduce the MDA into Polish academia.

The ludology-narratology dispute has been dismissed and neglected by many researchers. Theorists on both sides of the conflict created theories assimilating the concepts of their opponents. However, in my opinion, Ian Bogost — a scientist not involved in the dispute — has the most interesting solution to the problem. Bogost’s basic concepts — unit operations comparative criticism and procedural rhetoric theory – combine interpretations of game rules with those of narratives. The achievements of Bogost seem less known and appreciated in the Polish game studies. In this article, I will present the basic theories from Bogost’s main books: Unit Operations: An Approach to Videogame Criticism and Persuasive Games: The Expressive Power of Videogames in the context of ludology versus narratology debate.
