1. A New Full 3-D Model of Cosmogenic Tritium $^3$H Production in the Atmosphere (CRAC:3H)

Abstract: A new model of cosmogenic tritium ($^3$H) production in the atmosphere is presented. The model belongs to the CRAC (Cosmic-Ray Atmospheric Cascade) family and is named as CRAC:3H. It is based on a full Monte-Carlo simulation of the cosmic-ray induced atmospheric cascade using the Geant4 toolkit. The CRAC:3H model is able, for the first time, to compute tritium production at any location and time, for any given energy spectrum of the primary incident cosmic ray particles, explicitly treating, also for the first time, particles heavier than protons. This model provides a useful tool for the use of $^3$H as a tracer of atmospheric and hydrological circulation. A numerical recipe for practical use of the model is appended.

Abstract: Today, the near-Earth space is facing a paradigm change as the number of new spacecraft is literally sky-rocketing. Increasing numbers of small satellites threaten the sustainable use of space, as without removal, space debris will eventually make certain critical orbits unusable. A central factor affecting small spacecraft health and leading to debris is the radiation environment, which is unpredictable due to an incomplete understanding of the near-Earth radiation environment itself and its variability driven by the solar wind and outer magnetosphere. This paper presents the FORESAIL-1 nanosatellite mission, having two scientific and one technological objectives. The first scientific objective is to measure the energy and flux of energetic particle loss to the atmosphere with a representative energy and pitch angle resolution over a wide range of magnetic local times. To pave the way to novel model - in situ data comparisons, we also show preliminary results on precipitating electron fluxes obtained with the new global hybrid-Vlasov simulation Vlasiator. The second scientific objective of the FORESAIL-1 mission is to measure energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) of solar origin. The solar ENA flux has the potential to contribute importantly to the knowledge of solar eruption energy budget estimations. The technological objective is to demonstrate a satellite de-orbiting technology, and for the first time, make an orbit manoeuvre with a propellantless nanosatellite. 3. Solar energetic particles and galactic cosmic rays over millions of years as inferred from data on cosmogenic $^{26}$Al in lunar samples

Abstract: Aims. Lunar soil and rocks are not protected by a magnetic field or an atmosphere and are continuously irradiated by energetic particles that can produce cosmogenic radioisotopes directly inside rocks at different depths depending on the particle's energy. This allows the mean fluxes of solar and galactic cosmic rays to be assessed on the very long timescales of millions of years. Methods. Here we show that lunar rocks can serve as a very good particle integral spectrometer in the energy range 20-80 MeV. We have developed a new method based on precise modeling, that is applied to measurements of $^{26}$Al (half-life ~0.7 megayears) in lunar samples from the Apollo mission, and present the first direct reconstruction (i.e., without any a priori assumptions) of the mean energy spectrum of solar and galactic energetic particles over a million of years. Results. We show that the reconstructed spectrum of solar energetic particles is totally consistent with that over the last decades, despite the very different levels of solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays ($\phi=496\pm 40$ MV over a million years versus $\phi= 660\pm 20$ MV for the modern epoch). We also estimated the occurrence probability of extreme solar events and argue that no events with the F(>30 MeV) fluence exceeding $5*10^{10}$ and $10^{11}$ cm$^2$ are expected on timescales of a thousand and million years, respectively. Conclusions. We conclude that the mean flux of solar energetic particles hardly depends on the level of solar activity, in contrast to the solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays. 4. GLE and Sub-GLE Redefinition in the Light of High-Altitude Polar Neutron Monitors

Abstract: The conventional definition of ground-level enhancement (GLE) events requires a detection of solar energetic particles (SEP) by at least two differently located neutron monitors. Some places are exceptionally well suitable for ground-based detection of SEP - high-elevation polar regions with negligible geomagnetic and reduced atmospheric energy/rigidity cutoffs. At present, there are two neutron-monitor stations in such locations on the Antarctic plateau: SOPO/SOPB (at Amundsen-Scott station, 2835 m elevation), and DOMC/DOMB (at Concordia station, 3233 m elevation). Since 2015, when the DOMC/DOMB station started continuous operation, a relatively weak SEP event that was not detected by sea-level neutron-monitor stations was registered by both SOPO/SOPB and DOMC/DOMB, and it was accordingly classified as a GLE. This would lead to a distortion of the homogeneity of the historic GLE list and the corresponding statistics. To address this issue, we propose to modify the GLE definition so that it maintains the homogeneity: A GLE event is registered when there are near-time coincident and statistically significant enhancements of the count rates of at least two differently located neutron monitors, including at least one neutron monitor near sea level and a corresponding enhancement in the proton flux measured by a space-borne instrument(s). Relatively weak SEP events registered only by high-altitude polar neutron monitors, but with no response from cosmic-ray stations at sea level, can be classified as sub-GLEs.

Abstract: We present the precision measurements of 11 years of daily cosmic electron fluxes in the rigidity interval from 1.00 to 41.9 GV based on 2.0×108 electrons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The electron fluxes exhibit variations on multiple timescales. Recurrent electron flux variations with periods of 27 days, 13.5 days, and 9 days are observed. We find that the electron fluxes show distinctly different time variations from the proton fluxes. Remarkably, a hysteresis between the electron flux and the proton flux is observed with a significance of greater than 6σ at rigidities below 8.5 GV. Furthermore, significant structures in the electron-proton hysteresis are observed corresponding to sharp structures in both fluxes. This continuous daily electron data provide unique input to the understanding of the charge sign dependence of cosmic rays over an 11-year solar cycle.

Abstract: We report the properties of primary cosmic-ray sulfur (S) in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV based on 0.38 × 106 sulfur nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment (AMS). We observed that above 90 GV the rigidity dependence of the S flux is identical to the rigidity dependence of Ne-Mg-Si fluxes, which is different from the rigidity dependence of the He-C-O-Fe fluxes. We found that, similar to N, Na, and Al cosmic rays, over the entire rigidity range, the traditional primary cosmic rays S, Ne, Mg, and C all have sizeable secondary components, and the S, Ne, and Mg fluxes are well described by the weighted sum of the primary silicon flux and the secondary fluorine flux, and the C flux is well described by the weighted sum of the primary oxygen flux and the secondary boron flux. The primary and secondary contributions of the traditional primary cosmic-ray fluxes of C, Ne, Mg, and S (even Z elements) are distinctly different from the primary and secondary contributions of the N, Na, and Al (odd Z elements) fluxes. The abundance ratio at the source for S/Si is 0.167±0.006, for Ne/Si is 0.833±0.025, for Mg/Si is 0.994±0.029, and for C/O is 0.836±0.025. These values are determined independent of cosmic-ray propagation.

Abstract: We report the properties of aluminum (Al) nuclei in cosmic rays measured in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV with 0.51 million nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. We observed that above 6 GV the Al spectrum is well described by the weighted sum of the silicon spectrum (primary cosmic rays) and the fluorine spectrum (secondary cosmic rays). The fraction of the primary component increases with rigidity and becomes dominant at highest rigidities. Al/Si abundance ratio at the source is determined independent of cosmic ray propagation.

13. The impact of different atmospheric phenomena to cosmogenic ²² Na/⁷Be ratio

Abstract: The isotopic ratio of two cosmogenic isotopes, ²²Na and ⁷Be, has been recognized as a possible tracer for atmospheric dynamics. We studied how different atmospheric phenomena affect the ²²Na/⁷Be ratio that are known to affect the ground level ⁷Be concentrations. The ²²Na/7Be ratio was studied in the following context: estimation of aerosol residence time, in the intrusions of stratospheric air after Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) events, seasonal variations due to different atmospheric mixing conditions and finally the interannual variations caused by the large-scale atmospheric circulation such as North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Arctic Oscillation (AO), Scandinavian Pattern (SCAND) and Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO). This study utilized airborne radioactivity monitoring data from three Finnish stations located in Rovaniemi (66.51 °N, 25.73 °E), Kajaani (64.08 °N, 27.71 °E) and Kotka (60.48 °N, 26.92 °E). The theoretical calculations were performed to see how the ²²Na/⁷Be ratio changes as a function of altitude during when produced by the galactic cosmic rays. The calculations showed that the ²²Na/⁷Be ratio is higher in the stratosphere and lower in the troposphere. At mid-stratosphere level the ratio was 0.001, at tropopause level approximately 0.0007 and at ground level approximately 0.00045. Due to the different half-lives of 22Na and ⁷Be the mean atmospheric residence time can be estimefrom the radioactive decay law by assuming an initial activity concentration ratio of 0.0007 and using the measured ground level ²²Na/⁷Be ratios. This resulted in the median atmospheric residence time as 91–95 days. The atmospheric impact on ²²Na/⁷Be ratio was studied at different time scales starting from short-term impact from SSW, the known seasonal cycle and variations at interannual timescale. SSW events caused rapid increases in the ground level ⁷Be and ²²Na concentrations while the impact on ²²Na/⁷Be ratio was relatively small. A clear seasonal cycle in the ²²Na/⁷Be ratio was observed where the ²²Na/⁷Be ratio was at low value during November–February, increased during March–May, stayed at stable high value during June–July and steadily decreased during August–October. The long-term average for ²²Na/7Be ratio was established to be 1.1 × 10⁻⁴ by using the Kotka data from 1993 to 2020. During 1995–2009, the ²²Na/⁷Be ratio was below the long-term average, and during 2010–2020, generally above. The interannual variations in the ²²Na/⁷Be ratio were studied by using wavelet transform analysis of the Kotka data. The analysis showed 4–6-year and 11-year periodicities. The wavelet coherence analyses with AO, NAO, SCAND, QBO and Southern Oscillation (SO) indices showed that the shorter periodicity was caused by the NAO/AO effects the atmospheric circulation in Scandinavia and hence the transport of the isotopes from upper atmosphere to ground level. The observed coherence with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) starting from 2012 onwards appeared at an approximately 3–4 year scale while the AO and NAO had a coherence at an approximately 6-year scale. The observed 11-year periodicity was caused by the Solar cycle which modulates the ⁷Be and ²²Na production in the upper atmosphere.

15. Pulse height-length analysis of data from neutron monitors DOMC/DOMB with a new data acquisition system

Abstract: Two high-altitude polar neutron monitors DOMC and DOMB (Dome C, Concordia station, Antarctic plateau, 3233 m a.s.l.) received a major electronics upgrade in 2019. While a typical standard neutron monitor data acquisition (DAQ) system only registers the number of pulses from a cosmic-ray particle detector, the new system digitizes all pulses with 2 MHz sampling rate and stores this information in raw data files. This feature makes it possible to conduct a pulse height-length analysis of the neutron monitor data on a routine basis. In this study, we have analysed several months of the cosmic-ray data recorded with the new DAQ system during 2019–2020 (more than 10 million pulses). We identified several pulse branches corresponding to different processes: (a) secondary particles from individual cosmic-ray cascades, (b) noise, (c) double pulses originated from particles of the same local cascade, (d) high multiple pulses likely related to atmospheric muons, (e) double pulses potentially caused by contamination by neutrons scattered in the neighbouring instrument. We also studied the waiting time distributions of pulses and have shown that two peaks can be clearly distinguished: (1) at about 1 millisecond, which is related to the intra-cascade particles, and (2) at 30–1000 milliseconds related to different uncorrelated cosmic-ray cascades. Our conclusions are supported by theoretical estimates of the waiting times in different scenarios.

Abstract: We report the properties of sodium (Na) and aluminum (Al) cosmic rays in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV based on 0.46 million sodium and 0.51 million aluminum nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. We found that Na and Al, together with nitrogen (N), belong to a distinct cosmic ray group. In this group, we observe that, similar to the N flux, both the Na flux and Al flux are well described by the sums of a primary cosmic ray component (proportional to the silicon flux) and a secondary cosmic ray component (proportional to the fluorine flux). The fraction of the primary component increases with rigidity for the N, Na, and Al fluxes and becomes dominant at the highest rigidities. The Na/Si and Al/Si abundance ratios at the source, 0.036 +/- 0.003 for Na/Si and 0.103 +/- 0.004 for Al/Si, are determined independent of cosmic ray propagation. 18. About the altitude profile of the atmospheric cut-off of cosmic rays:new revised assessment

Abstract: Cosmic rays, high-energy subatomic particles of extraterrestrial origin, are systematically measured by space-borne and ground-based instruments. A specific interest is paid to high-energy ions accelerated during solar eruptions, so-called solar energetic particles. In order to build a comprehensive picture of their nature, it is important to fill the gap and inter-calibrate ground-based and space-borne instruments. Here, we focus on ground-based detectors, specifically neutron monitors, which form a global network and provide continuous recording of cosmic ray intensity and its variability, used also to register relativistic solar energetic particles. The count rate of each neutron monitor is determined by the geomagnetic and atmospheric cut-offs, both being functions of the location. Here, on the basis of Monte Carlo simulations with the PLANETOCOSMICS code and by the employment of a new verified neutron monitor yield function, we assessed the atmospheric cut-off as a function of the altitude, as well as for specific stations located in the polar region. The assessed in this study altitude profile of the atmospheric cut-off for primary cosmic rays builds the basis for the joint analysis of strong solar proton events with different instruments and allows one to clarify recent definitions and related discussions about the new sub-class of events, so-called sub-ground-level enhancements (sub-GLEs).

19. Study of individual pulses at the Antarctic high-altitude neutron monitor DOMC

Abstract: A pair of neutron monitors (NMs) is installed on the high Central Antarctic plateau, at the Concordia station (3200 m altitude) and measures the nucleonic component of nucleonic-muon-electromagnetic cascades induced by high-energy cosmic rays in the atmosphere. The installation includes two NMs: DOMC, a standard mini-NM, and a bare (lead-free) DOMB NM. The newly installed data acquisition (DAQ) system records individual pulses corresponding to mostly neutrons in the detector’s counting tube. Here we analyze different types of pulses and study the distribution of the waiting times between individual pulses as well as the pulse height, recorded by the DOMC NM during a quiet period of January 2020. The distribution appears doublepeaked with peaks corresponding to the frequency of individual atmospheric cascades and the intra-cascade variability, respectively. We discuss also the nature of different components contributing to the pulses and separation of the signal from noise. Abstract: We report the observation of new properties of primary iron (Fe) cosmic rays in the rigidity range 2.65 GV to 3.0 TV with 0.62×10⁶ iron nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. Above 80.5 GV the rigidity dependence of the cosmic ray Fe flux is identical to the rigidity dependence of the primary cosmic ray He, C, and O fluxes, with the Fe/O flux ratio being constant at 0.155±0.006. This shows that unexpectedly Fe and He, C, and O belong to the same class of primary cosmic rays which is different from the primary cosmic rays Ne, Mg, and Si class.

Abstract: Precise knowledge of the charge and rigidity dependence of the secondary cosmic ray fluxes and the secondary-to-primary flux ratios is essential in the understanding of cosmic ray propagation. We report the properties of heavy secondary cosmic ray fluorine F in the rigidity $R$ range 2.15 GV to 2.9 TV based on 0.29 million events collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. The fluorine spectrum deviates from a single power law above 200 GV. The heavier secondary-to-primary F/Si flux ratio rigidity dependence is distinctly different from the lighter B/O (or B/C) rigidity dependence. In particular, above 10 GV, the $\frac{F/Si}{B/O}$ ratio can be described by a power law $R^{δ}$ with $δ$=0.052±0.007. This shows that the propagation properties of heavy cosmic rays, from F to Si, are different from those of light cosmic rays, from He to O, and that the secondary cosmic rays have two classes.

22. Data management at the Oulu cosmic ray station

Abstract: With the recent electronics upgrade of Antarctic neutron monitors (NMs) DOMC and DOMB in 2019, the Oulu cosmic ray station (Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, Finland) receives a significantly larger amount of data than before. This has led to a need for an important upgrade of the configuration of servers working at the station. The new configuration has three types of servers: a web-server, a datamaster server and data acquisition machines. The web-server provides a user interface for services of the station: the main website, the GLE database and other services. The datamaster is the main server, which stores all data in raw files and a database. Data acquisition machines are computers that directly receive data from the instruments and send the files farther to the datamaster server. This work describes technical details of the cosmic ray station setup providing reliable and secure data acquisition, handling and publication.

Abstract: A new model of cosmogenic tritium (³H) production in the atmosphere is presented. The model belongs to the CRAC (Cosmic Ray Atmospheric Cascade) family and is named as CRAC:3H. It is based on a full Monte Carlo simulation of the cosmic ray induced atmospheric cascade using the Geant4 toolkit. The CRAC:3H model is able, for the first time, to compute tritium production at any location and time, for any given energy spectrum of the primary incident cosmic ray particles, explicitly treating, also for the first time, particles heavier than protons. This model provides a useful tool for the use of ³H as a tracer of atmospheric and hydrological circulation. A numerical recipe for practical use of the model is appended.

Abstract: Annually resolved radiocarbon (¹⁴C) measurements on tree rings led to the discovery of abrupt variations in ¹⁴C production attributed to large solar flares. We present new results of annual and subannual ¹⁴C fluctuations in tree rings from a middle-latitude sequoia (California) and a high-latitude pine (Finland), analyzed for the period 1030–1080 CE, to trace a possible impact of the Crab supernova explosion, occurring during the Oort minimum of solar activity. Our results indicate an increase of Δ¹⁴C around 1054/55 CE, which we estimate is higher in magnitude than the cyclic variability due to solar activity at a 2σ significance level. The net signal appears to be synchronized in the studied locations. Several sources of this event are possible including γ-rays from the Crab supernova, an unusually weak solar minimum or a solar energetic particle incident. More data are needed to provide more insight into the origin of this ¹⁴C event.

28. Spectra of solar energetic particles and galactic cosmic rays over a million years reconstructed using aluminium-26 data from lunar rocks

Abstract: Direct measurements of solar energetic particles (SEP) cover the space era of several decades, but indirectly they can be studied for thousands and millions of years backward using cosmogenic nuclides in lunar rocks and soil. With a proper nuclide production model, it is possible to estimate the mean energy spectrum of SEP, as well as of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) from a depth profile of the measured nuclide content. Here we used aluminium-26 (lifetime 1.03 Myr) measurements in Apollo-mission lunar samples. Previous estimates of the SEP spectrum from lunar data were based on the assumed specific shape and only provided reconstructed spectral parameters. We report a different approach to use a lunar rock as an integral spectrometer within 20–80 MeV. With that, one can reconstruct the particle spectrum directly without any a-priori assumptions on its exact shape. For each studied lunar sample, we have developed an accurate Geant4 model. We estimated the average GCR spectrum over the last million years (the modulation potential 496±40 MV), which is consistent with that for the Holocene (449±70 MV), but significantly lower than that for the modern epoch (660±20MV).We also made a true reconstruction of the mean SEP spectrum over the last million years. The integral flux >30 MeV was estimated as 37.4 particles/(cm² s), which is consistent with that for the modern epoch. The estimated occurrence probability of SEP events shows no expected events with fluence >30 MeV over 5×10¹⁰ and 1×10¹¹ particles/cm² on millennial and Mega-year time scales, respectively.

Abstract: Aims: Lunar soil and rocks are not protected by a magnetic field or an atmosphere and are continuously irradiated by energetic particles that can produce cosmogenic radioisotopes directly inside rocks at different depths depending on the particle’s energy. This allows the mean fluxes of solar and galactic cosmic rays to be assessed on the very long timescales of millions of years. Methods: Here we show that lunar rocks can serve as a very good particle integral spectrometer in the energy range 20–80 MeV. We have developed a new method based on precise modeling, that is applied to measurements of ²⁶Al (half-life ≈0.7 megayears) in lunar samples from the Apollo mission, and present the first direct reconstruction (i.e., without any a priori assumptions) of the mean energy spectrum of solar and galactic energetic particles over a million of years. Results: We show that the reconstructed spectrum of solar energetic particles is totally consistent with that over the last decades, despite the very different levels of solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays (ϕ = 496 ± 40 MV over a million years versus (ϕ = 660 ± 20 MV for the modern epoch). We also estimated the occurrence probability of extreme solar events and argue that no events with the F(>30 MeV) fluence exceeding 5×10¹⁰ and 10¹¹ cm−2 are expected on timescales of a thousand and million years, respectively. Conclusions: We conclude that the mean flux of solar energetic particles hardly depends on the level of solar activity, in contrast to the solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays. This puts new observational constraints on solar physics and becomes important for assessing radiation hazards for the planned space missions.

Abstract: A new model of cosmogenic tritium (3H) production in the atmosphere is presented. The model belongs to the CRAC (Cosmic Ray Atmospheric Cascade) family and is named as CRAC:3H. It is based on a full Monte Carlo simulation of the cosmic ray induced atmospheric cascade using the Geant4 toolkit. The CRAC:3H model is able, for the first time, to compute tritium production at any location and time, for any given energy spectrum of the primary incident cosmic ray particles, explicitly treating, also for the first time, particles heavier than protons. This model provides a useful tool for the use of 3H as a tracer of atmospheric and hydrological circulation. A numerical recipe for practical use of the model is appended. Abstract: Production of isotopes by cosmic rays in the Earth’s atmosphere plays a key role in many studies in solar physics, geophysics, archeology and other fields. For those purposes, precise quantitative modeling of their production is crucial, and high-resolution altitudinal profiles of production rates are in high demand. Here we present detailed and consistent yield functions of isotopes ⁷Be, ¹⁰Be, ¹⁴C, ²²Na and ³⁶Cl produced by energetic particles in the atmosphere. Comparison of reconstructions of the ¹⁰Be deposition flux in 1951–2013 and around 775 AD with ice core measurements is shown for illustration of application of our yield functions.

Abstract: International audience; Precise knowledge of the charge and rigidity dependence of the secondary cosmic ray fluxes and the secondary-to-primary flux ratios is essential in the understanding of cosmic ray propagation. We report the properties of heavy secondary cosmic ray fluorine F in the rigidity $R$ range 2.15 GV to 2.9 TV based on 0.29 million events collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. The fluorine spectrum deviates from a single power law above 200 GV. The heavier secondary-to-primary F/Si flux ratio rigidity dependence is distinctly different from the lighter B/O (or B/C) rigidity dependence. In particular, above 10 GV, the $^{\textrm{F/Si}}_{\textrm{B/O}}$ ratio can be described by a power law $R^δ$ with $δ=0.052±0.007$. This shows that the propagation properties of heavy cosmic rays, from F to Si, are different from those of light cosmic rays, from He to O, and that the secondary cosmic rays have two classes.

Abstract: Annually resolved radiocarbon (14C) measurements on tree rings led to the discovery of abrupt variations in 14C production attributed to large solar flares. We present new results of annual and subannual 14C fluctuations in tree rings from a middle-latitude sequoia (California) and a high-latitude pine (Finland), analyzed for the period 1030–1080 CE, to trace a possible impact of the Crab supernova explosion, occurring during the Oort minimum of solar activity. Our results indicate an increase of Δ14C around 1054/55 CE, which we estimate is higher in magnitude than the cyclic variability due to solar activity at a 2σ significance level. The net signal appears to be synchronized in the studied locations. Several sources of this event are possible including γ-rays from the Crab supernova, an unusually weak solar minimum or a solar energetic particle incident. More data are needed to provide more insight into the origin of this 14C event.

Abstract: Precision measurements by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) on the International Space Station of the deuteron (D) flux are presented. The measurements are based on 21×10^{6} D nuclei in the rigidity range from 1.9 to 21 GV collected from May 2011 to April 2021. We observe that over the entire rigidity range the D flux exhibits nearly identical time variations with the p, ^{3}He, and ^{4}He fluxes. Above 4.5 GV, the D/^{4}He flux ratio is time independent and its rigidity dependence is well described by a single power law ∝R^{Δ} with Δ_{D/^{4}He}=-0.108±0.005. This is in contrast with the ^{3}He/^{4}He flux ratio for which we find Δ_{^{3}He/^{4}He}=-0.289±0.003. Above ∼13 GV we find a nearly identical rigidity dependence of the D and p fluxes with a D/p flux ratio of 0.027±0.001. These unexpected observations indicate that cosmic deuterons have a sizable primarylike component. With a method independent of cosmic ray propagation, we obtain the primary component of the D flux equal to 9.4±0.5% of the ^{4}He flux and the secondary component of the D flux equal to 58±5% of the ^{3}He flux.

Abstract: We present the precision measurements of 11 years of daily cosmic positron fluxes in the rigidity range from 1.00 to 41.9 GV based on 3.4×10^{6} positrons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The positron fluxes show distinctly different time variations from the electron fluxes at short and long timescales. A hysteresis between the electron fluxes and the positron fluxes is observed with a significance greater than 5σ at rigidities below 8.5 GV. On the contrary, the positron fluxes and the proton fluxes show similar time variation. Remarkably, we found that positron fluxes are modulated more than proton fluxes with a significance greater than 5σ for rigidities below 7 GV. These continuous daily positron fluxes, together with AMS daily electron, proton, and helium fluxes over an 11-year solar cycle, provide unique input to the understanding of both the charge-sign and mass dependencies of cosmic rays in the heliosphere.

Abstract: We report the properties of primary cosmic-ray sulfur (S) in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV based on 0.38×10^{6} sulfur nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment (AMS). We observed that above 90 GV the rigidity dependence of the S flux is identical to the rigidity dependence of Ne-Mg-Si fluxes, which is different from the rigidity dependence of the He-C-O-Fe fluxes. We found that, similar to N, Na, and Al cosmic rays, over the entire rigidity range, the traditional primary cosmic rays S, Ne, Mg, and C all have sizeable secondary components, and the S, Ne, and Mg fluxes are well described by the weighted sum of the primary silicon flux and the secondary fluorine flux, and the C flux is well described by the weighted sum of the primary oxygen flux and the secondary boron flux. The primary and secondary contributions of the traditional primary cosmic-ray fluxes of C, Ne, Mg, and S (even Z elements) are distinctly different from the primary and secondary contributions of the N, Na, and Al (odd Z elements) fluxes. The abundance ratio at the source for S/Si is 0.167±0.006, for Ne/Si is 0.833±0.025, for Mg/Si is 0.994±0.029, and for C/O is 0.836±0.025. These values are determined independent of cosmic-ray propagation.

Abstract: We present the precision measurements of 11 years of daily cosmic electron fluxes in the rigidity interval from 1.00 to 41.9 GV based on 2.0×10^{8} electrons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The electron fluxes exhibit variations on multiple timescales. Recurrent electron flux variations with periods of 27 days, 13.5 days, and 9 days are observed. We find that the electron fluxes show distinctly different time variations from the proton fluxes. Remarkably, a hysteresis between the electron flux and the proton flux is observed with a significance of greater than 6σ at rigidities below 8.5 GV. Furthermore, significant structures in the electron-proton hysteresis are observed corresponding to sharp structures in both fluxes. This continuous daily electron data provide unique input to the understanding of the charge sign dependence of cosmic rays over an 11-year solar cycle.

Abstract: Large-scale solid bodies on Earth such as volcanoes and man-made pyramids have been visualized with solid earth muography, and the recently invented technique, acqueous muography, has already demonstrated its capability to visualize ocean tides and tsunami. In this work, atmospheric muography, a technique to visualize and monitor the vertical profile of tropic cyclones (TCs) is presented for the first time. The density distribution and time-dependent behavior of several TCs which had approached Kagoshima, Japan, has been investigated with muography. The resultant time-sequential images captured their warm cores, and their movements were consistent with the TC trails and barometric pressure variations observed at meteorological stations. By combining multidirectional muographic images with barometric data, we anticipate that muography will become a useful tool to monitor the three-dimensional density distribution of a targeted mesoscale convective system., (© 2022. Abstract: We present the precision measurement of 2824 daily helium fluxes in cosmic rays from May 20, 2011 to October 29, 2019 in the rigidity interval from 1.71 to 100 GV based on 7.6×10^{8} helium nuclei collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The helium flux and the helium to proton flux ratio exhibit variations on multiple timescales. In nearly all the time intervals from 2014 to 2018, we observed recurrent helium flux variations with a period of 27 days. Shorter periods of 9 days and 13.5 days are observed in 2016. The strength of all three periodicities changes with time and rigidity. In the entire time period, we found that below ∼7 GV the helium flux exhibits larger time variations than the proton flux, and above ∼7 GV the helium to proton flux ratio is time independent. Remarkably, below 2.4 GV a hysteresis between the helium to proton flux ratio and the helium flux was observed at greater than the 7σ level. This shows that at low rigidity the modulation of the helium to proton flux ratio is different before and after the solar maximum in 2014.
