Abstract

We report on the facile synthesis of SiO2@nitrized‐TiO2 nanocomposite (NST) by calcination of TiO2 xerogel with OctaAmmonium POSS® (N‐POSS; POSS=polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes). The as‐obtained nanoporous mixed oxide is constituted by uniformly distributed SiO2 and nitrized‐TiO2, where the silica component is present in an amorphous state and TiO2 in an anatase/rutile mixed phase (92.1 % vs. 7.9 %, respectively) with very small anatase crystallites (3.7 nm). The TiO2 lattice is nitrized both at interstitial and substitutional positions. NST features a negatively charged surface with a remarkable surface area (406 m2 g−1), endowed with special adsorption capabilities towards cationic dyes. Its photocatalytic behavior was tested by following the degradation of standard aqueous methylene blue and methyl orange solutions under UV and visible light irradiation, according to ISO 10678:2010. For comparison, analogous investigations were carried out on a silica‐free N−TiO2, obtained by using NH4Cl as nitrogen source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The unextracted residue, obtained after an extractive process from glass cullet with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution at 140°C for 2 hours, is mainly made of calcium and sodium silicate. It shows a high porosity and a large surface area. It could be active as an agent for the removal dyes from wastewater. In this paper Methyl Red (MR) was employed to evaluate the adsorbent properties of above residue. Aliquots of this residue were maintained at room temperature under constant stirring with 0.025-0.5 g/L of MR aqueous solution by using a liquid/solid ratio from 50 to 500 mL/g and up to 24 hours. The results have shown an effective removal of MR within one hour for MR concentration of 0.5 g/L and within 30 minutes and for MR concentration ≤ 0.25 g/L with liquid/solid ratio < 100 mL/g. The performance of the residue as an adsorbent contributes to increase the environmental sustainability of glass recycling treatment and further decreases the amount of waste to be delivered to landfill. Abstract

Natural disasters are able to cause significant damage to chemical plants, structure, infrastructure and lifelines (power plants, fuel storage facilities, water treatment plants, etc.). Failures in these systems could worsen the effects on people, environment and economy due to natural disasters. In the literature such scenarios are known as Natural-Technological (Na-Tech) events; in this frame volcanic eruptions can trigger a wide range of Na-Tech hazards for both human health and environment. This chapter extends a recent study related to the analysis of the potential damage of primary (mechanical) treatments included in wastewater plants due to the fallout of volcanic ash produced by volcanic explosive eruptions. The work aims at the identification of the conditions leading to the functionality reduction of grit removal facilities. An application of the proposed approach to a case study, which is the surrounding Mt. Etna (Italy), is also given
