The central molecular zone (CMZ) of our Galaxy exhibits widespread emission from SiO and various complex organic molecules (COMs), yet the exact origin of such emission is uncertain. Here we report the discovery of a unique class of long ($>$0.5 pc) and narrow ($<$0.03 pc) filaments in the emission of SiO 5$-$4 and eight additional molecular lines, including several COMs, in our ALMA 1.3 mm spectral line observations toward two massive molecular clouds in the CMZ, which we name as slim filaments. However, these filaments are not detected in the 1.3 mm continuum at the 5$\sigma$ level. Their line-of-sight velocities are coherent and inconsistent with being outflows. The column densities and relative abundances of the detected molecules are statistically similar to those in protostellar outflows but different from those in dense cores within the same clouds. Turbulent pressure in these filaments dominates over self gravity and leads to hydrostatic inequilibrium, indicating that they are a different class of objects than the dense gas filaments in dynamical equilibrium ubiquitously found in nearby molecular clouds. We argue that these newly detected slim filaments are associated with parsec-scale shocks, likely arising from dynamic interactions between shock waves and molecular clouds. The dissipation of the slim filaments may replenish SiO and COMs in the interstellar medium and lead to their widespread emission in the CMZ., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

We present the first detection of the ground-state OH emission line at 1612 MHz toward the prototypical carbon-rich planetary nebula (PN) NGC 7027, utilizing the newly installed ultra-wideband (UWB) receiver of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). This emission is likely to originate from the interface of the neutral shell and the ionized region. The other three ground-state OH lines at 1665, 1667, and 1721 MHz are observed in absorption and have velocities well matched with that of HCO$^+$ absorption. We infer that the OH absorption is from the outer shell of NGC 7027, although the possibility that they are associated with a foreground cloud cannot be completely ruled out. All the OH lines exhibit a single blue-shifted component with respect to the central star. The formation of OH in carbon-rich environments might be via photodissociation-induced chemical processes. Our observations offer significant constraints for chemical simulations, and they underscore the potent capability of the UWB receiver of FAST to search for nascent PNe., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Water fountain objects are generally defined as "evolved stars with low to intermediate initial mass accompanied by high-velocity molecular jets detectable in the 22.235 GHz H$_2$O maser line". They are the key objects of understanding the morphological transitions of circumstellar envelopes during the post asymptotic giant branch phase. Masers are useful tools to trace the kinematic environments of the circumstellar envelopes. In this letter we report the discovery of exceptionally uncommon excited-state hydroxyl (ex-OH) masers at 4660 and 6031 MHz toward the water fountain source IRAS 18460-0151. These are the brightest ex-OH masers discovered in late-type objects to date. To the best of our knowledge, prior to the current work, no evolved stellar object has been observed in the 4660 MHz ex-OH maser line. The ground-state hydroxyl (g-OH) masers at 1612 and 1665 MHz are also observed. The velocity components of the 4660 MHz ex-OH maser line and the much weaker 1665 MHz g-OH maser line all can be seen in the 1612 MHz g-OH maser line profile. The blue-shifted components of the three masers are more intense than the red-shifted ones, in contrast to the ex-OH maser line at 6031 MHz. The evolution of asymptotic giant branch stars from the spherical symmetry into the diverse shapes of planetary nebulae (PNe) is a topic of intensive research. Young PNe provide a unique opportunity to characterize the onset of this transitional phase. In particular, OH maser-emitting PNe (OHPNe) are considered nascent PNe. In fact, only 6 OHPNe have been confirmed to date. In order to identify and characterize more OHPNe, we processed the unpublished continuum data of the interferometric follow-up of the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH). We then matched the interferometric positions of OH maser and radio continuum emission, considering the latter as a possible tracer of free-free emission from photoionized gas, characteristic of PNe. We report 8 objects with a positive coincidence, 4 of which are classified as candidate OHPNe here for the first time (IRAS 16372-4808, IRAS 17494-2645, IRAS 18019-2216 and OH 341.6811+00.2634). Available evidence strongly indicates that they are evolved stars, while the comparison with confirmed OHPNe indicates that they are likely to be PNe. Their final confirmation as bona fide PNe, however, requires optical/infrared spectroscopy. The obtained spectral indices of the radio continuum emission (between $\simeq$ 0.4 - 1.3) are consistent with partially optically thick free-free emission from photoionized gas. Also, they cluster in the same region of a WISE colour-colour diagram as that of the confirmed OHPNe ($9.5 \lesssim [3.4]-[22] \lesssim 13.5$, and $4.0 \lesssim [4.6]-[12] \lesssim 7.0$), thus this diagram could help to identify more OHPNe candidates in the future., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to make new observations of the 36.2-GHz ($4_{-1}\rightarrow3_0$E) methanol transition toward NGC 4945 and NGC 253. These observations have revealed the presence of new maser components toward these galaxies, and have provided the first clear evidence for variability in extragalactic class~I methanol masers. Alongside the new observations of NGC 4945 and NGC 253, we present the results of recent 36.2-GHz methanol maser searches toward 12 galaxies, placing upper limits on the emission from the 36.2-GHz class~I transition and the 37.7-GHz ($7_{2}\rightarrow8_1$E) class~II maser line toward these sources. Flux density values for the 7-mm continuum emission toward these sources are also reported where applicable. A re-analysis of the published 36.2-GHz methanol observations of Arp 220 undertaken as part of the search revealed some issues with previous imaging procedures. The re-analysis, combined with non-detections in independent follow-up observations suggest that there is no 36.2-GHz methanol emission toward Arp 220 stronger than 3.5 mJy in a 10 km s$^{-1}$ channel (5$\sigma$ upper limit)., Comment: Accepted into MNRAS 2019 November 1. 15 pages, 6 figures and 8 tables (7 in main text, 1 in appendix)

We report the results of our systematic survey for Galactic 6.7 GHz Class II CH$_3$OH maser emission toward a sample of young stellar objects. The survey was conducted with the Shanghai Tianma Radio Telescope (TMRT). The sample consists of 3348 sources selected from the all-sky \emph{Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE)} point source catalog. We have discussed the selection criteria in detail and the detection results of those at high Galactic latitudes (i.e. $|b|>$ 2$^\circ$) in a previous paper (paper I). Here, we present the results from the survey of those at low Galactic latitudes, i.e. $|b|<2^\circ$. Of 1875 selected \emph{WISE} point sources, 291 positions that were actually associated with 224 sources were detected with CH$_3$OH maser emission. Among them, 32 are newly detected. Majority of the newly detected sources are associated with bright WISE sources. The majority of the detected sources (209/224 = 93.3\%) are quite close to the Galactic Plane ($|b|<1^\circ$) and lie on the inner spiral arms with positive LSR velocities. Detection rate and the color-color distribution of our detection are all matched with our anticipation. Combining with detections from previous surveys, we compile a catalogue of 1085 sources with 6.7 GHz CH$_3$OH maser emission in our Galaxy., Comment: 46 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables

We performed a systematic 6.7 GHz Class \uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral2} methanol maser survey using the Shanghai Tianma Radio Telescope toward targets selected from the all-sky \emph{Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE)} point catalog. In this paper, we report the results from the survey of those at high Galactic latitudes, i.e. $|b|>$ 2$^\circ$. Of 1473 selected \emph{WISE} point sources at high latitude, 17 point positions that were actually associated with 12 sources were detected with maser emission, reflecting the rarity (1$-$2\%) of methanol masers in the region away from the Galactic plane. Out of the 12 sources, 3 are detected for the first time. The spectral energy distribution (SED) at infrared bands shows that these new detected masers occur in the massive star forming regions. Compared to previous detections, the methanol maser changes significantly in both spectral profiles and flux densities. The infrared \emph{WISE} images show that almost all of these masers are located in the positions of the bright \emph{WISE} point sources. Compared with the methanol masers at the Galactic plane, these high-latitude methanol masers provide good tracers for investigating the physics and kinematics around massive young stellar objects, because they are believed to be less affected by the surrounding cluster environment., Comment: 27pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. We present high spatial resolution observations of ground-state OH masers, achieved using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). These observations were conducted towards 171 pointing centres, where OH maser candidates were identified previously in the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH) towards the Galactic Center region, between Galactic longitudes of $355^{\circ}$ and $5^{\circ}$ and Galactic latitudes of $-2^{\circ}$ and $+2^{\circ}$. We detect maser emission towards 162 target fields and suggest that 6 out of 9 non-detections are due to intrinsic variability. Due to the superior spatial resolution of the follow-up ATCA observations, we have identified 356 OH maser sites in the 162 of the target fields with maser detections. Almost half (161 of 356) of these maser sites have been detected for the first time in these observations. After comparing the positions of these 356 maser sites to the literature, we find that 269 (76\%) sites are associated with evolved stars (two of which are planetary nebulae), 31 (9\%) are associated with star formation, four are associated with supernova remnants and we were unable to determine the origin of the remaining 52 (15\%) sites. Unlike the pilot region (\citealt{Qie2016a}), the infrared colors of evolved star sites with symmetric maser profiles in the 1612 MHz transition do not show obvious differences compared with those of evolved star sites with asymmetric maser profiles., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, accepted by ApJS

Four ground-state OH transitions were detected in emission, absorption and maser emission in the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH). We re-observed these OH masers with the Australia Telescope Compact Array to obtain positions with high accuracy (~1 arcsec). According to the positions, we categorised these OH masers into different classes, i.e. star formation, evolved stars, supernova remnants and unknown origin. We found one interesting OH maser source (G336.644-0.695) in the pilot region, which has been studied in detail in Qiao et al. (2016a). We have searched for emission from the 36.2 GHz ($4_{-1} \rightarrow 3_0$E) methanol transition towards NGC 4945, using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. 36.2 GHz methanol emission was detected offset south-east from the Galactic nucleus. The methanol emission is narrow, with a linewidth <10 kms$^{-1}$, and a luminosity five orders of magnitude higher than Galactic class I masers from the same transition. These characteristics combined the with physical separation from the strong central thermal emission suggests that the methanol emission is a maser. This emission is a factor of $\sim90$ more luminous than the widespread emission detected from the Milky Way central molecular zone (CMZ). This is the fourth detection of extragalactic class I emission, and the third detection of extragalactic 36.2 GHz maser emission. These extragalactic class I methanol masers do not appear to be simply highly luminous variants of Galactic class I emission, and instead appear to trace large-scale regions of low-velocity shocks in molecular gas, which may precede, or be associated with, the early stages of large-scale star formation., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to observe the 36.2-GHz class I methanol maser emission towards NGC253 and find that it is located at the interface between the nuclear ring and both ends of the galactic bar. This is thought to be the location of the inner Linblad resonance and we suggest that the maser emission in this region is likely due to large-scale cloud-cloud collisions. We have detected the first extragalactic 44.1-GHz class I methanol maser and find that it is associated with the 36.2-GHz maser emission. In contrast to the class I methanol masers found in Galactic star formation regions, the 44.1-GHz emission in NGC253 is two orders of magnitude weaker than the 36.2-GHz masers. Both the 36.2- and 44.1- GHz emission is orders of magnitude stronger than expected from typical high-mass star formation regions. This demonstrates that the luminous class I methanol masers observed in NGC253 are significantly different from those associated with Galactic star formation., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the detection of maser emission from the $J=4-3$ transition of HC$_3$N at 36.4~GHz towards the nearby starburst galaxy NGC253. This is the first detection of maser emission from this transition in either a Galactic or extragalactic source. The HC$_3$N maser emission has a brightness temperature in excess of 2500 K and is offset from the center of the galaxy by approximately 18 arcsec (300 pc), but close to a previously reported class~I methanol maser. Both the HC$_3$N and methanol masers appear to arise near the interface between the galactic bar and the central molecular zone, where it is thought that molecular gas is being transported inwards, producing a region of extensive low-velocity shocks., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, 7 pages, 3 figures

We report on high spatial resolution observations, using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), of ground-state OH masers. These observations were carried out toward 196 pointing centres previously identified in the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH) pilot region, between Galactic longitudes of $334^{\circ}$ and $344^{\circ}$ and Galactic latitudes of $-2^{\circ}$ and $+2^{\circ}$. Supplementing our data with data from the MAGMO (Mapping the Galactic Magnetic field through OH masers) survey, we find maser emission towards 175 of the 196 target fields. We conclude that about half of the 21 non-detections were due to intrinsic variability. Due to the superior sensitivity of the follow-up ATCA observations, and the ability to resolve nearby sources into separate sites, we have identified 215 OH maser sites towards the 175 fields with detections. Among these 215 OH maser sites, 111 are new detections. After comparing the positions of these 215 maser sites to the literature, we identify 122 (57 per cent) sites associated with evolved stars (one of which is a planetary nebula), 64 (30 per cent) with star formation, two sites with supernova remnants and 27 (13 per cent) of unknown origin. The infrared colors of evolved star sites with symmetric maser profiles tend to be redder than those of evolved star sites with asymmetric maser profiles, which may indicate that symmetric sources are generally at an earlier evolutionary stage., Comment: 29 pages, 17 figures, accepted by ApJS, 162 on-line figures

Ground-state OH masers identified in the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl were observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array to obtain positions with high accuracy ($\sim$1\,arcsec). We classified these OH masers into evolved star OH maser sites, star formation OH maser sites, supernova remnant OH maser sites, planetary nebula OH maser sites and unknown maser sites using their accurate positions. We report on OH maser emission toward G336.644-0.695 (IRAS 16333-4807), which is a H2O maser-emitting Planetary Nebula (PN). We have detected 1612, 1667 and 1720 MHz OH masers at two epochs using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), hereby confirming it as the seventh known case of an OH-maser-emitting PN. This is only the second known PN showing 1720 MHz OH masers after K 3-35 and the only evolved stellar object with 1720 MHz OH masers as the strongest transition. This PN is one of a group of very young PNe. The 1612 MHz and 1667 MHz masers are at a similar velocity to the 22 GHz H2O masers, whereas the 1720 MHz masers show a variable spectrum, with several components spread over a higher velocity range (up to 36 km/s). We also detect Zeeman splitting in the 1720 MHz transition at two epochs (with field strengths of ~2 to ~10 mG), which suggests the OH emission at 1720 MHz is formed in a magnetized environment. We have detected emission from both the 4_{-1}-3_{0} E (36.2~GHz) class I and 7_{-2}-8_{-1} E (37.7~GHz) class II methanol transitions towards the centre of the closest ultra-luminous infrared galaxy Arp 220. The emission in both the methanol transitions show narrow spectral features and have luminosities approximately 8 orders of magnitude stronger than that observed from typical class I methanol masers observed in Galactic star formation regions. The emission is also orders of magnitude stronger than the expected intensity of thermal emission from these transitions and based on these findings we suggest that the emission from the two transitions are masers. These observations provides the first detection of a methanol megamaser in the 36.2 and 37.7 GHz transitions and represents only the second detection of a methanol megamaser, following the recent report of an 84 GHz methanol megamaser in NGC1068. We find the methanol megamasers are significantly offset from the nuclear region and arise towards regions where there is Ha emission, suggesting that it is associated with starburst activity. The high degree of correlation between the spatial distribution of the 36.2 GHz methanol and X-ray plume emission suggests that the production of strong extragalactic class I methanol masers is related to galactic outflow driven shocks and perhaps cosmic rays. In contrast to OH and H2O megamasers which originate close to the nucleus, methanol megamasers provide a new probe of feedback (e.g. outflows) processes on larger-scales and of star formation beyond the circumnuclear starburst regions of active galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to search for emission from the $4_{-1} \rightarrow 3_{0}E$ transition of methanol (36.2 GHz) towards the center of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC253. Two regions of emission were detected, offset from the nucleus along the same position angle as the inner spiral arms. The emission is largely unresolved on a scale of 5 arcsec, has a full-width half maximum (FWHM) line width of < 30 km s$^{-1}$, and an isotropic luminosity orders of magnitude larger than that observed in any Galactic star formation regions. These characteristics suggest that the 36.2 GHz methanol emission is most likely a maser, although observations with higher angular and spectral resolution are required to confirm this. If it is a maser this represents the first detection of a class I methanol maser outside the Milky Way. The 36.2 GHz methanol emission in NGC253 has more than an order of magnitude higher isotropic luminosity than the widespread emission recently detected towards the center of the Milky Way. If emission from this transition scales with nuclear star formation rate then it may be detectable in the central regions of many starburst galaxies. Detection of methanol emission in ultra-luminous infra-red galaxies (ULIRGs) would open up a new tool for testing for variations in fundamental constants (in particular the proton-to-electron mass ratio) on cosmological scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, 5 pages, 2 figures
