The biotransformation of compounds is a critical point in understanding their toxic effects in both toxicology and ecotoxicology. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether there is a difference in the phytogenotoxic potential of the commercial fungicide Nativo® between non-biotransformed samples and samples biotransformed by swine liver enzymes. The fungicide Nativo is a mixture of Tebuconazole (TEB; 200 g L -1 ) and Trifloxystrobin (TRI; 100 g L -1 ). The test organism used in this study was Allium cepa, and the mitotic index (MI), chromosomic aberrations, and micronucleus frequency in A. cepa cells were compared between samples of non-biotransformed Nativo and biotransformed Nativo. The results showed that the Nativo biotransformated products were less genotoxic than the non-biotransformed Nativo, with the no-observed effect concentration (NOEC) values for micronuclei formation being four times lower after swine enzymes biotransformation, while MI was not altered. The no observed effect concentration values for micronuclei formation by the fungicide mixture were 7.8 and 3.9 mg L -1 for TEB and TRI, respectively, for the biotransformed samples, and 1.9 and 1.0 mg L -1 for the non-biotransformed samples, demonstrating that swine liver enzyme activity decreased genotoxicity. New mixtures of pesticides are being placed on the market to increase the spectrum of phytosanitary action. Thus, the eco(geno)toxic effects of the new commercial mixture named Platinum Neo, as well as its constituents the neonicotinoid Thiamethoxam and the pyrethroid Lambda-Cyhalothrin, were investigated using the species Daphnia magna, Raphidocelis subcapitata, Danio rerio, and Allium cepa L. The lowest- and no-observed effect concentration (LOEC and NOEC) were measured in ecotoxicological tests. While Thiamethoxam was ecotoxic at ppm level, Lambda-Cyhalothrin and Platinum Neo formulation were ecotoxic at ppb level. The mitotic index (MI), chromosomal aberrations and micronucleus [MN] frequency were measured as indicators of phytogenotoxicity in A. cepa plants exposed for 12 h to the different insecticides and their mixture under different dilutions. There were significant alterations in the MI and MN frequency in comparison with the A. cepa negative control group, with Thiamethoxam, Lambda-Cyhalothrin, and Platinum Neo treatments all significantly reducing MI and increasing MN frequency. Thus, MI reduction was found at 13.7 mg L -1 for Thiamethoxam, 0.8 μg L -1 for Lambda-Cyahalothrin, and 2.7:2 μg L -1 for Platinum Neo, while MN induction was not observed at 14 mg L -1 for Thiamethoxam, 0.8 μg L -1 for Lambda-Cyahalothrin, and 1.4:1 μg L -1 for Platinum Neo. The insecticide eco(geno)toxicity hierarchy was Platinun Neo > Lambda-Cyhalothrin > Thiamethoxam, and the organism sensitivity hierarchy was daphnids > fish > algae > A. cepa. Environmental release of wastewater that contains cytostatic drugs can cause genotoxic impact, since these drugs act directly on the genetic material of aquatic organisms. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the removal of the cytostatic drugs cytarabine (CTR) and methotrexate (MTX) using different physico-chemical methods individually (i.e. US, O 3 , H 2 O 2 and UV) and combined (i.e. O 3 /US, US/H 2 O 2 , O 3 /H 2 O 2 and O 3 /US/H 2 O 2 ) under different pH conditions (4, 7 and 10). In the degradation tests, the efficiency of the methods applied was found to be dependent on the pH of the solution, with the degradation of CTR being better at pH 4 and MTX at pH 7 and pH 10. The US, H 2 O 2 and US + H 2 O 2 methods were the least efficient in degrading CTR and MTX under the pH conditions tested. The highest MTX degradation rate after 16 min of treatment at pH 7 was achieved by the O 3  + H 2 O 2 method (97.05% - C/C 0  = 0.0295). For CTR, the highest degradation rate after 16 min of treatment was achieved by the O 3 process (99.70% - C/C 0  =  0.0030) at pH 4. In conclusion, most of the treatment methods tested for the degradation of CTR and MTX are effective. Notably, ozonolysis is an efficient process applied alone. Also, in combination with other methods (US + O 3 , O 3  + H 2 O 2 and O 3  + H 2 O 2  + US) it increases the degradation performance, showing a rapid removal rate of 70-94% in less than 4 min of treatment.

In this article, the environmental sustainability of a circular economy concept applied to the management of biowaste was studied. To achieve this goal, the composting performance, compost-amended soil health, and phytotoxicity were assessed in the case of management of solid waste from a small swine slaughterhouse. Microorganisms present in a similar composting process were used as inoculums to improve the efficiency of composting. Addition of the inoculum promoted a faster and more efficient composting process than composting without the inoculum. The physical, chemical, and microbiological characteristics of soil were considered to be improved after compost application. Phytotoxicity tests in soils with and without compost amendment showed that a soil-compost mixture (90:10 and 70:30 mass ratios) was not phytotoxic to the plant species Sorghum saccharatum and Lepidium sativum , and that soil with compost showed higher plant biomass growth than that without compost amendment. The triple bottom line methodology used in this study can help in the assessment of circular economy activity in relation to the environmentally sustainable management of solid waste generated in small swine slaughterhouses.

Small slaughterhouses generate biowaste, which for economic reasons, is generally destined for composting. Inoculating appropriate microorganisms can improve biodegradation efficiency and mitigate odor generation during the composting process and can give rise to composts with neutral or pleasant odors. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the odor intensity reduction of compost generated with and without a formulated inoculum ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae , Bacillus subtilis , and Rhodopseudomonas palustris ). A set of experimental data was collected and analyzed according to the German "Verein Deutscher Ingenieure" odor protocol. The results showed that adding microorganisms was effective in reducing unpleasant odors in all three composts generated from swine, cattle, and poultry slaughterhouse by-products during both summer and winter seasons. Additionally, soil odor was predominant in composts that were inoculated in the two tested seasons (i.e., summer and winter). On the other hand, composts without inoculation had odors similar to peat for swine compost, ammonia for cattle compost, and manure for poultry compost, regardless of the season tested. Overall, composting process with appropriate inoculum can help in the correct disposal of slaughterhouse wastes by transforming organic matter into composts, which can have economic and environmental value as a soil conditioner and/or fertilizer.

This article seeks to characterize the bacterial profile of pediatric hospital wastewater samples collected at the outlet of a wastewater treatment plant, and to estimate their relative susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. A total of 64 strains were isolated in the wastewater samples, of which 49 were identified as belonging to different families: Enterobacteriaceae (e.g. Escherichia coli , Klebsiella sp., Citrobacter sp.) comprised 57.2% of the identified bacteria, non-Enterobacteriaceae (e.g. Aeromonas sp., Pseudomonas sp.) comprised 30.6%, and Streptococcaceae (e.g. Enterococcus sp.) comprised 12.2%. The tests of the susceptibility of the bacteria to the antimicrobial agents used in the hospital showed that 100% of the bacterial species found discharged in the hospital wastewater treatment system were resistant to one or more of the antimicrobial agents according to the criteria of the U.S. Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute/National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards. The antimicrobial agent tests showed that meropenem, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and cefepime were the most effective antimicrobials against bacteria of the Enterobacteriaceae family. For bacteria of the non-Enterobacteriaceae family, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and cefepime presented the most effective antimicrobial action, whereas for bacteria of the Streptococcaceae family, ampicillin, vancomycin, and gentamicin were the most effective antimicrobials. Hospital wastewater treatment plants could be considered as places of selection pressure for bacterial resistance because of the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria coming from sewers or created at the treatment plant.

To understand which type of hospital waste may contain the highest amount of antibiotic resistant microorganisms that could be released into the environment, the bacterial strains entering and leaving a hospital wastewater treatment plant (HWTP) were identified and tested for their antibiotic susceptibility. To achieve this goal, samples were collected from three separate sites, inlet and outlet wastewater positions, and sludge generated in a septic tank. After microbiological characterization according to APHA, AWWA, and WEF protocols, the relative susceptibility of the bacterial strains to various antibiotic agents was assessed according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines, to determine whether there were higher numbers of resistant bacterial strains in the inlet wastewater sample than in the outlet wastewater and sludge samples. The results showed more antibiotic resistant bacteria in the sludge than in the inlet wastewater, and that the Enterobacteriaceae family was the predominant species in the collected samples. The most antibiotic-resistant families were found to be Streptococcacea and non-Enterobacteriaceae. Some bacterial strains were resistant to all the tested antibiotics. We conclude that the studied HWTP can be considered a source of resistant bacterial strains. It is suggested that outlet water and sludge generated in HWTPs should be monitored, and that efficient treatment to eliminate all bacteria from the different types of hospital waste released into the environment is adopted., (© 2023. Agrochemicals used for treating and preventing aquaculture diseases are usually present in combination with other compounds, and the toxicity resulting from their chemical interactions presents an important reason to assess the ecotoxicity of compound mixtures in view to better understanding the joint action of chemicals and avoiding their environmental impacts. In this study, we evaluated the acute aquatic ecotoxicity of several compounds used in Brazilian fish farming (Oxytetracycline [OXT], Trichlorfon [TRC], and BioFish® [BIO]), both individually and in binary and ternary mixtures. Initial test concentrations were prepared according to the recommended concentrations for aquaculture application, and from these, a geometric dilution series was tested on two important fresh water quality indicator species, the microcrustacean Daphnia magna and the bacterium Aliivibrio fischeri. At the recommended pond application rate, TRC and BIO applied individually showed toxicity to the tested organisms in terms of the lowest-observed-effect concentration (LOEC), and D. magna was always more sensitive than A. fischeri. For the two test organisms, the results obtained with the binary mixtures showed that the TRC and BIO mixture was more toxic than TRC and OXT, which in turn was more toxic than OXT and BIO. The toxicity from all agrochemicals in the ternary mixture was more than that of the agrochemical combinations in the binary mixtures. Given the results presented in this study, it is evident that the mode of action and availability of the tested compounds undergo changes that increase toxicity when they are present in combination, and therefore, aquaculture wastewater treatment should be adopted to ensure decontamination of agrochemical residues., (© 2023. The literature reports the presence of multiresistant microorganisms in wastewater discharged from municipal and hospital wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This has led to questions concerning the disinfection efficiency of the treatments applied. Thus, this study aimed to assess the efficiency of different chemical oxidation methods to disinfect and to degrade bacterial plasmids present in hospital wastewaters, to avoid the dispersion of antibiotic resistance genes in the environment. The methods tested were UV 254nm alone or associated with an Ag or Ti-photocatalyst in photo-peroxonization (UV 254 nm/ H 2 O 2 /O 3 /Ag 2 O/Ag 2 CO 3 @PU or UV 254 nm/ H 2 O 2 /O 3 /TiO 2 @PU) under different pH conditions (4, 7, and 10). The application of plasmid DNA electrophoresis to hospital wastewater treated using an advanced oxidation process (AOP) achieved the total structural denaturation of microorganism plasmids at the three pH values tested. Also, UV 254 nm alone was partially efficient in the disinfection of hospital wastewater. AOPs performed with the two functionalized catalysts resulted in 100% disinfection after 10 min at the three pH values tested. No intact plasmids were observed after 20 min of treatment with photocatalysis. This study could contribute to the development and improvement of wastewater treatment aimed at mitigating the spread of multiresistant microorganisms in the environment.

Urban afforestation can mitigate the effects of air pollution, but the suitability of plant species for this purpose needs to be determined according to pollution intensity and climate change. The goal of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of different phytotoxicity endpoints using two native Brazilian plant species as models, Aroeira (Schinus terebinthifolius) and Cuvatã (Cupania vernalis). The sensitivity parameters evaluated could help in selecting the most air-pollution-tolerant plant species for use in urban afforestation programs. The two plant species were exposed, in a greenhouse, to the combustion gases of a diesel engine for 120 days, with daily intermittent gas exposure. Every 30 days, leaf injury (chlorosis and necrosis), biomass, and physiological/biochemical parameters (proteins, chlorophyll, and peroxidase enzyme activity) were evaluated for both plant species. For the two selected species, the endpoints studied can be ranked according to their sensitivity (or inversely the tolerance) to diesel oil combustion gases in the following order: peroxidase > biomass ≈ chlorophyll > protein > leaf injury. Deterministic and probabilistic ecological risk assessments were performed for the boron present in coastal waters in the region of the São Sebastião channel (coast of São Paulo State, Brazil) surrounding the outfall of the São Sebastião waterway terminal (TEBAR) and in reference areas far from the outfall. A set of ecotoxicity tests with 9 marine organisms (Lytechinus variegatus, Arbacia lixula, Skeletonema costatum, Asterionellopsis glacialis, Parablenius pilicornis, Artemia salina, Megabalanus coccopoma, Mysidopsis juniae and Hypnea musciformes) was performed in the laboratory. Ecotoxicity tests confirmed that boron presents low ecotoxicity, with Lytechinus variegatus being the most sensitive species studied, with an EC 50 of 14.6 mg L -1 and a no-observed effect concentration (NOEC) of 6.75 mg L -1 . According to the deterministic ecological risk assessment, no significant environmental impact is expected if we consider the most sensitive of the organisms tested and the highest concentration of boron found in the coastal waters (5.82 mg L -1 )., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. The composting process is an option for acceptable environmental management of cattle slaughterhouse by-products. The goals of this article were (i) to make a low-cost inoculum using popular supermarket ingredients and microorganisms that are already present in the composting environment, and (ii) to compare the efficiency of the composting process with and without the application of formulated inoculum. Initially, a consortium of microorganisms already present in the composting environment ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae , Bacillus subtilis, and Rhodopseudomonas palustris ) was prepared in a low-cost culture medium for use as an inoculum for the composting process. The composting process with the addition of the inoculum was more efficient than the composting process without the inoculum, in terms of both the chemical composition and the process efficiency, but mainly in relation to the time required for composting, with the mean times for decay of 50% of the windrows' temperature (taking in to account the difference between internal and external windrow temperatures) being 96 days without inoculum and 65 days with inoculum. Thus, inoculum made with low-cost supermarket products reduced the composting time and yielded compost of better quality.

The goal of this study was to assess the efficiency of antibiotic degradation applying different chemical treatment methods and their combinations. Thus, improvement in the efficiency of these methods when combined was quantified. The methods tested to degrade/mineralize the antibiotics amoxicillin (AMX) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) under different pH conditions (4, 7 and 10) were ultra-violet irradiation (UV 254 nm) , ultrasound (US), hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and ozone (O 3 ) alone and in combination. The results showed that individual methods were only partially efficient in the degradation/mineralization of antibiotics, except for ozonation at alkaline pH. In the combined methods, the best performance was obtained with US/UV/H 2 O 2 /O 3 (pH 10, 20-min treatment), where the degradation rates for the antibiotics were 99.8% for CIP and 99.9% for AMX. For the mineralization efficiency the values obtained were 71.3% for CIP and 79.2% for AMX. The results of this study could contribute to the development and improvement of wastewater treatment aimed at avoiding the presence of residual antibiotics in the environment.

Recalcitrant dyes found in textile wastewater represent a threat for sustainable textile production due to their resistance to conventional treatments. This study assessed an alternative co-composting system for the treatment of recalcitrant textile dyes where textile industrial sludge, sewage wastewater, or sewage sludge were used as microbial compost inocula. The biodegradation efficiency of bioreactor trials and compost quality of the co-composting system were assessed by visible spectrophotometry and by a phytotoxicity test. The co-composting system (dry weight (dw) basis) consisted of 200 g of restaurant organic residues + 200 g sewage sludge (or 100 mL sewage wastewater, or 200 g textile sludge) + 100 mL of a 10% dye solution (Reactive Red 195, or Synolon Brown, or Orange Remazol, or Yellow Synozol, or Reactive Orange 122, or Reactive Black 5). After 60 days of composting, all dyes were biodegraded according to spectrophotometric data, with efficiency varying from 97.2 to 99.9%. Inoculum efficiency ranking was textile sludge > sewage sludge > sewage wastewater. Regarding compost quality, a phytotoxicity study with lettuce showed no toxicity effect. Thus, co-composting can be a low-cost and efficient method for recalcitrant textile dye biodegradation and for managing textile sludge in terms of waste recycling, contributing to environmental sustainability., (© 2021. The degradation efficiency of the Fenton reaction or ozonolysis (O 3 ) to treat soil contaminated by crude petroleum was studied in association with the sonolysis process. To quantify oxidation efficiency, total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were measured, while biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ) was measured to estimate biodegradation potential. TOC removal efficiency ranged from 9 to 52% to the Fenton reaction without sonolysis, and 18% and 78% with sonolysis for reagent concentrations of 1% H 2 O 2 -100 mM Fe 2+ and 20% H 2 O 2 -1 mM Fe 2+ , respectively. For ozonolysis (after 10 and 60 min of treatment), the reduction in TOC ranged from 9 to 43% without sonolysis and 15 to 61% with sonolysis. The Fenton reaction without sonolysis increased the biodegradability in relation to the non-oxidized sample by 6% (1% H 2 O 2 -100 mM Fe 2+ ) and 26% (20% H 2 O 2 -1 mM Fe 2+ ), and with sonolysis the corresponding values were 13% and 42%, respectively. The biodegradation potential under ozonolysis without sonolysis increased from 0.18 (10 min of treatment) to 0.38 (30 min of treatment), and with sonolysis these values were 0.26 and 0.58, respectively. Optimization of the remediation processes is essential to determine sequential treatment order and efficiency.

This study sought to use concentration-time-response surfaces to show the effects of exposure to toxic (semi-)metals on peroxidase activity in higher plants as a function of exposure-concentration and exposure-time. Maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings (i.e., leaves and roots) were exposed to arsenic (as As 3+ ) or aluminium (as Al 3+ ) under hydroponic conditions, and their biomass and peroxidase enzyme responses were assessed at different concentration-time-exposures. The 3D ecotoxi-profile generated with these data showed two distinct regions: the first region is formed by exposures (i.e., points for time-concentration pairings) that were not statistically different from the results of the control points (i.e., zero toxicant concentration and all exposure-times), whereas the second region is formed by exposure pairings with results that were statistically different to those obtained from control pairings. Overall, the data show that enzyme activity increased over a shorter exposure-time when there was an increase in the exposure-concentration of the toxicant, which can be seen on a 3-D toxicity profile. This work aimed to evaluate the impact of veterinary antibiotics on biomass phytoproductivity and soil enzyme activity. The soil was sampled in the city of Camboriú (state of SC, Brazil). The soil enzyme activity was assessed through hydrolysis of fluorescein diacetate (FDA), while phytotoxicity was tested using Lactuca sativa (lettuce). Results showed that the most appropriate exposure time to assess the impact of antibiotics on soil microbiology was 24 h, while the incubation time of 3 h was the most appropriate for FDA hydrolysis. Ampicillin and Amoxicillin at the tested concentrations did not interfere with the enzyme activity of the soil microbiota, while Oxytetracycline and Neomycin showed a significant reduction in soil enzyme activity. For the dry and wet biomass of lettuce, 2% Colistin and 1% Ampicillin were the treatments that reduced lettuce biomass. Hence, the use of excessive antibiotics in animal production may lead to environmental impacts and, in the future, to public health problems.

The use of advanced oxidative processes (AOPs) is an efficient alternative for the treatment of textile wastewaters. The aim of this study was to assess the dye removal efficiency of a Fenton-based degradation process followed by a polishing step using biochar prepared from rice husk. Six recalcitrant textile dyes - Reactive Red 195 (D1), Synolon Brown S2 (D2), Orange Remazol RGB (D3), Yellow Synozol K3 (D4), Reactive Orange (D5), and Reactive Black 5 (D6) - were treated with Fenton and photo-Fenton processes (with and without biochar polishing) under optimized conditions. The results showed a general efficiency ranking: photo-Fenton + biochar ≈ Fenton + biochar > photo-Fenton ≈ Fenton. The Fenton process was also efficient for the regeneration of the dye-saturated biochar. The photo-Fenton + biochar process achieved the following color removal percentages: D1 (98.8%), D2 (99.7%), D3 (98.9%), D4 (96.3%), D5 (94.2%) and D6 (94.8%). This process was applied to a real conventionally-treated textile wastewater and analysis showed a reduction in BOD (87.5% degradation), COD (62.5% degradation) and color (93.5% mean removal). These results reveal the possibility for the reuse of the treated water for non-potable industrial uses, for example, floor washing or the cleaning of machines and toilet areas.

The minimum set of parameters that can be used to assess the adsorption capacity of activated carbon (AC) produced from termite bio-waste was determined. Three types of AC were prepared: AC600 at 600 °C, MAC600 at the same temperature and impregnated with FeCl 3 , and AC800 at 800 °C. The influence of the solution pH on the adsorption, adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamic parameters was considered to characterize the amoxicillin (AMX) adsorption process. The AC materials had surface areas (m 2  g -1 ) of approximately 248.8 for AC600, 501.6 for AC800 and 269.5 for MAC600, with point of zero charge (pH PZC ) values of 8.3, 7.5 and 1.7, respectively. A time period of 30 min was chosen for the adsorption kinetics, which was best represented by the pseudo-first-order model for AC600, the intraparticle diffusion model for AC800 and the pseudo-second-order model for MAC600. Regarding the isotherms, a maximum adsorption of 23.4 mg g -1 was found for AC800. In general, the thermodynamic parameters demonstrated a non-spontaneous process. It seems that the medium conditions, the adsorbate and adsorbent characteristics, and the Gibbs free energy are the most important parameters to be considered in a preliminary assessment of the adsorption efficiency of specific adsorbent/adsorbate pairs.

In this study, Guabiroba (Campomanesia xanthocarpa O. Berg.) plants were exposed in greenhouses to combustion gases emitted by a diesel engine over 120 days, with daily intermittent gas exposure. Every 30 days, leaf injury (chlorosis and necrosis), plant biomass and physiological/biochemical parameters (proteins, chlorophyll and peroxidase enzyme activity) were evaluated. The data obtained were used to construct a hierarchy of the sensitivity (and inversely, of the resistance or tolerance) of this higher plant species to the diesel oil combustion gases: peroxidase > biomass ≈ chlorophyll > protein > leaf injury. Variations in these parameters could be used for the early diagnosis of plant stress or as a marker for stress tolerance in trees. In the first case, a sensitive species could be used for the phytomonitoring of air quality and in the second case the lack of significant variations in these parameters would indicator tolerance of the plant species to air pollution. This work aimed to produce activated carbon (AC) from brewing industry waste (the malt bagasse) to adsorb Paracetamol. Malt bagasse was characterized by moisture and ash contents and thermogravimetric analysis. Three types of AC were prepared: C400 (400 °C) and C500 (500 °C) under oxidizing atmosphere, and CN550 (550 °C) under nitrogen atmosphere. Some of these ACs were characterized by pH, point of zero charge (pH PZC ), infrared spectroscopy, N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy, and temperature-programed desorption of CO 2 and NH 3 . A pH PZC value < 7.0 and high density of acid sites were identified for CN550. Specific surface areas were between 192.5 and 364.0 m 2 .g -1 . Adsorption kinetic studies were performed in a batch system with 50 mL of Paracetamol solution (100 mg.L -1 ) under pH 4 and 0.75 g of adsorbent (optimized conditions). The time to reach adsorption equilibrium was 20 min with 98.3% Paracetamol removal for CN550 AC. The pseudo-second order model and the Langmuir isotherm best fitted experimental data. Brewing industry waste can be used as a source of organic matter for AC production, since the percentage of Paracetamol removal in this study showed that CN550 AC presentes high adsorption efficiency and economically viable production.

The influence of the pH and the contaminant desorption/emulsification on ozone (O 3 ), ozone-hydrogen peroxide (O 3 /H 2 O 2 ) and ozone-photolysis (O 3 /UV) oxidation reactions were performed to treat crude petroleum (CP) contaminated soil and water samples. Oxidation efficiency is also related to both free radicals formation in reaction medium (which is dependent of the pH), and contaminant availability (which is dependent of the compounds solubilization or desorption processes). Thus, batch basic processes of O 3 /H 2 O 2 or O 3 /UV were improved with sonication system and surfactant addition. In the case of O 3 /H 2 O 2 process, the reactions were performed at adjusted (pH = 11) and natural pH (free pH= 4-5). The effectiveness of the improved advanced oxidation processes were evaluated through the time-course analysis of the chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5 ), and total organic carbon (TOC) values. For both improved treatment processes, CP-contaminated water samples displayed higher values for TOC removal and BOD 5 /COD ratios than CP-contaminated soil samples. The O 3 /H 2 O 2 process provided better results than the O 3 /UV process regarding degradation efficiency, but the former is associated with higher treatment costs due to H 2 O 2 consumption. Overall, oxidation treatment processes increase their efficiencies when reactions are carried out associated with solubilization and desorption systems promoted by sonication/surfactant action.

The Parati River contributes to the Babitonga Bay water complex, but the contents of the bay also influence the river during periods of inverted currents. In this study, the water quality along four stretches of the Parati River and Babitonga Bay was evaluated using chemical (physico-chemical and chromatographic analysis), microbiological (fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis) and ecotoxicological (Lumistox) methods to assess the reciprocal influence of the waters of this river-bay system. In addition, the most appropriate type of analysis for the monitoring of the estuarine region of the Parati River was identified. The results of six sampling campaigns showed that the type of contaminants and their levels varied temporally and spatially and thus the water quality also changed. Anthropogenic activity, such as banana cultivation and the release of sewage into the water system, is the primary cause of the contamination that affects the quality of the water in the Parati River estuary, which is a crucial ecological niche for the reproduction of various marine species. The ecotoxicity tests with Aliivibrio fischeri conducted to evaluate the water quality showed an integrative response, and the ecotoxicity data indicated that the Parati River does not have a significant influence on the water quality of Babitonga Bay.

The goals of this study were to analyze if there is a difference in the stable isotopic ratio (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) of macrobenthic species sampled at two sandy beaches (one close to a river mouth and the other far from any freshwater input) and to identify differences in the stable isotopic ratio (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) in different body parts of three representative species of two Brazilian sandy beach macrofaunas: the polychaete Hemipodia californiensis, the mollusk bivalve Donax hanleyanus, and the crustacean decapod Emerita brasiliensis. No significant differences were detected in the δ 13 C stable isotopic ratio between the two sites analyzed; however, in the δ 15 N stable isotopic ratio, a significant difference was observed. Regarding the intraspecific response of stable isotopic ratio, D. hanleyanus showed a significant difference in carbon among different body part structures, while a trend for significance was observed for nitrogen isotopes. The differences were significant for both isotopes in E. brasiliensis, and no differences were observed among the body part structures in H. californiensis. There were significant differences in E. brasiliensis carapaces with regard to the δ 15 N stable isotopic ratio between the muscle and the whole body. Although the δ 13 C and δ 15 N stable isotopic ratio differs significantly in the digestive tract, muscles, and whole body of D. hanleyanus, such differences were not enough to determine changes in their trophic levels and food sources. Similar stable isotopic ratios were observed in the whole body, proboscis, and teeth of H. californiensis, highlighting this species as the top predator. In conclusion, stable isotopic analysis of benthic trophic structure can be employed as a tool in coastal management plans or environmental impact studies.

In this article we compare the efficiency of different methods of rapid-response remediation of beach sand contaminated with microbiological and/or organic matter. Contaminated beach sands were treated in laboratory by different treatment methods (i.e., oxidation, UV-photoexposure, or thermal methods) and the efficiency of disinfection and breakdown of organic matter were evaluated. Contaminants in raw and treated beach sands were measured by membrane filtration method, and by chemical and biochemical oxygen demand, and chromatographic analysis. All the methods tested were efficient for disinfecting beach sand with microbiological contamination, except for the UV-photoexposure method, which showed only moderate disinfection potential. Chemical degradation efficiency of beach sand contaminated by crude petroleum was higher with Fenton and Photo-Fenton (associated with the use of surfactant and ultrasound) methods. Photo-Fenton method improvement can increase the efficiency of contaminated beach sand treatment, and can also help beach managers when selecting which method to adopt for remedial actions., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Textile industry wastewater has become a cause of concern to environmentalists due to its toxic composition and the difficulty of breaking down certain dyes. In this study, modified fish scales of Sardinella brasiliensis (SSb) were used as an alternative for a low-cost adsorbent to remove dyes from textile wastewaters. Adsorption efficiency was assessed by measuring the general, kinetic, and thermodynamic physico-chemical parameters of adsorption isotherms, using Reactive Turquoise Blue 15 (RTB15) and Reactive Red 120 (RR120) dyes as adsorbate models, as local textile industries commonly use these dyes. The isothermal data from the batch experiments were inserted in the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Langmuir-Freundlich (SIPS) equations; the Langmuir isotherm equation showed the most appropriate. The thermodynamic parameters showed that adsorption of dyes by the modified SSb adsorbent was an endothermic yet spontaneous process in the case of RR120. Sorbent-based on SSb material was concluded as adsorbing both of the tested dyes. Because of its abundant availability, and the small amount of activation needed to turn it into an adsorbent, this biowaste can be employed as a low-cost alternative for removal of dyes in the treatment of textile wastewater.

We studied the combined acute effect (i.e., after 48 h) of deltamethrin (a pyrethroid insecticide) and malathion (an organophosphate insecticide) on Daphnia magna. Two approaches were used to examine the potential interaction effects of eight mixtures of deltamethrin and malathion: (i) calculation of mixture toxicity index (MTI) and safety factor index (SFI) and (ii) response surface methodology coupled with isobole-based statistical model (using generalized linear model). According to the calculation of MTI and SFI, one tested mixture was found additive while the two other tested mixtures were found no additive (MTI) or antagonistic (SFI), but these differences between index responses are only due to differences in terminology related to these two indexes. Through the surface response approach and isobologram analysis, we concluded that there was a significant antagonistic effect of the binary mixtures of deltamethrin and malathion that occurs on D. magna immobilization, after 48 h of exposure. Index approaches and surface response approach with isobologram analysis are complementary. Calculation of mixture toxicity index and safety factor index allows identifying punctually the type of interaction for several tested mixtures, while the surface response approach with isobologram analysis integrates all the data providing a global outcome about the type of interactive effect. Only the surface response approach and isobologram analysis allowed the statistical assessment of the ecotoxicological interaction. Nevertheless, we recommend the use of both approaches (i) to identify the combined effects of contaminants and (ii) to improve risk assessment and environmental management.

In recent years, numerous studies have justified the use of microalgae as a sustainable alternative for the generation of different types of fuels, food supplementation, and cosmetics, as well as bioremediation processes. To improve the cost/benefit ratio of microalgae mass production, many culture systems have been built and upgraded. Mathematical modeling the growth of different species in different systems has become an efficient and practical tool to understand both physical and biochemical phenomena in play during algae cultivation. In addition, growth modeling can guide design changes that lead to process optimization. In the present work, growth of the green microalga Scenedesmus obliquus was modeled in a hybrid photobioreactor that combines the characteristics of tubular photobioreactors (TPB) with thin-layer cascades (TLC). The system showed productivity greater than 8.0 g m -2 day -1 (dry mass) for CO 2 -fed cultures, and the model proved to be an accurate representation of experimental data with R 2 greater than 0.7 for all cases under variable conditions of temperature and irradiance to determine subsystem efficiency. Growth modeling also allowed growth prediction relative to the operating conditions of TLC, making it useful for estimating the system given other irradiance and temperature conditions, as well as other microalgae species., (© 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

The goal of this study was to optimize the mixture of swine manure (SM) and cattle manure (CM) used in the vermicomposting process, seeking to increase the manure biodegradation rate and enhance the biomass production of both earthworms and higher plants. To achieve this goal, physico-chemical parameters were determined to assess the final compost quality after 50 days of vermicomposting. The different manure ratios used to produce the composts (C) were as follows (SM:CM, % m/m basis): C1 100:0, C2 (75:25), C3 (50:50), C4 (25:75), and C5 (0:100). In addition, the earthworm biomass and the phytoproductivity of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) plants grown in mixtures (1:1) of natural soil and the most viable vermicomposts were investigated. The C1 and C2 compost compositions were associated with high earthworm mortality rates. The C3 compost provided the highest mineral concentrations and C5 showed the highest lettuce yield (wet biomass). The results verify that stabilized cattle manure is an excellent substrate for the vermicomposting process and that fresh swine manure must be mixed with pre-stabilized cattle manure to ensure an optimized vermicomposting process, which must be controlled in terms of temperature and ammonia levels. It is concluded that small livestock farmers could add value to swine manure by applying the vermicomposting process, without the need for high investments and with a minimal requirement for management of the biodegradation process. These are important technical aspects to be considered when circular economy principles are applied to small farms.

Coal mining-related activities result in a degraded landscape and sites associated with large amounts of dumped waste material. The arid soil resulting from acid mine drainage affects terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and thus, site remediation programs must be implemented to mitigate this sequential deleterious processes. A low-cost alternative material to counterbalance the affected physico-chemical-microbiological aspects of the degraded soil is the amendment with low contaminated and stabilized industrial organic sludge. The content of nutrients P and N, together with stabilized organic matter, makes this material an excellent fertilizer and soil conditioner, fostering biota colonization and succession in the degraded site. However, choice of native plant species to restore a degraded site must be guided by some minimal criteria, such as plant survival/adaptation and plant biomass productivity. Thus, in this 3-month study under environmental conditions, phytoproductivity tests with five native plant species (Surinam cherry Eugenia uniflora L., C. myrianthum-Citharexylum myrianthum, Inga-Inga spp., Brazilian peppertree Schinus terebinthifolius, and Sour cherry Prunus cerasus) were performed to assess these criteria, and additional biochemical parameters were measured in plant tissues (i.e., protein content and peroxidase activity) exposed to different soil/sludge mixture proportions. The results show that three native plants were more adequate to restore vegetation on degraded sites: Surinam cherry, C. myrianthum, and Brazilian peppertree. Thus, this study demonstrates that phytoproductivity tests associated with biochemical endpoint measurements can help in the choice of native plant species, as well as aiding in the choice of the most appropriate soil/stabilized sludge proportion in order to optimize biomass production.

There is scientific evidence that beach sands are a significant contributor to the pathogen load to which visitors are exposed. To develop beach quality guidelines all beach zones must be included in microbiological evaluations, but monitoring methods for beach sand quality are relatively longstanding, expensive, laborious and require moderate laboratory infrastructure. This paper aimed to evaluate the microorganism activity in different beach zones applying and comparing a classical method of membrane filtration (MF) with two colorimetric screening methods based on fluorescein (FDA) and tetrazolium (TTC) salt biotransformation to evaluate a new rapid and low-cost method for beach sand microbiological contamination assessments. The colorimetric results can help beach managers to evaluate rapidly and at low cost the microbiological quality of different beach zones in order to decide whether remedial actions need to be adopted to prevent exposure of the public to microbes due to beach sand and/or water contamination., (Copyright © 2017. Concerns regarding the environmental impact of diesel exhaust particulate matter (DPM) have increased in recent years. Following emission to the atmosphere, these fine materials can sorb many contaminants at their surface, which can subsequently be released, for instance, due to physicochemical environmental changes. The desorption of contaminants from particulate matter will increase the environmental pollution and can promote ecotoxicological effects. In this context, the objective of this study was to assess the aquatic ecotoxicity profile of extracts of DPM obtained at two different pH values. Thus, after collecting particulate matter from the diesel exhaust of heavy engines, extracts were obtained with pure water (at pH 2.00 and 5.00) and with a mixture of three organic solvents (dichloromethane, n-hexane, and acetone). To assess the environmental impact of DPM, the exhaust extracts were used in a battery of aquatic bioassays including key organisms of the food chain: bacteria (Aliivibrio fischeri), algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus), daphnids (Daphnia magna), and fishes (Danio rerio). The aqueous leachate at natural pH (2.0) and solvent extracts were extremely ecotoxic, while the aqueous leachate at pH = 5.0 showed the lowest ecotoxicity. The global ranking of sensitivity for the biotests tested was daphnids > algae > bacteria > fishes. Thus, the use of this bioassay battery could improve our understanding of the impact of DPM on aquatic environments, which is dependent on the pH of the leaching process.

River or alluvial sand mining is causing a variety of environmental problems in the Itajaí-açú river basin in Santa Catarina State (south of Brazil). When this type of commercial activity degrades areas around rivers, environmental restoration programs need to be executed. In this context, the aim of this study was to assess the evolution of a restored riparian forest based on data on the soil microbial activity and plant biomass growth. A reference site and three sites with soil degradation were studied over a 3-year period. Five campaigns were performed to determine the hydrolysis of the soil enzyme fluorescein diacetate (FDA), and the biomass productivity was determined at the end of the studied period. The variation in the enzyme activity for the different campaigns at each site was low, but this parameter did differ significantly according to the site. Well-managed sites showed the highest biomass productivity, and this, in turn, showed a strong positive correlation with soil enzyme activity. In conclusion, soil enzyme activity could form the basis for monitoring and the early prediction of the success of vegetal restoration programs, since responses at the higher level of biological organization take longer, inhibiting the assessment of the project within an acceptable time frame.

Diesel exhaust particulate matter (PM) can have an impact on the environment due to its chemical constitution. A large number of substances such as organic compounds, sulfates, nitrogen derivatives and metals are adsorbed to the particles and desorption of these contaminants could promote genotoxic effects. The objective of this study was to assess the in vivo genotoxicity profile of diesel exhaust PM from heavy-duty engines. Extracts were obtained through leaching with pure water and chemical extraction using three organic solvents (dichloromethane, hexane, and acetone). The in vivo Vicia faba micronucleus test (ISO 29200 protocol) was used to assess the environmental impact of the samples collected from diesel exhaust PM. The solid diesel PM (soot) dissolved in water, and the different extracts, showed positive results for micronucleus formation. After the addition of EDTA, the aqueous extracts did not show a genotoxic effect. The absence of metals in the organic solvent extract indicated that organic compounds also had a genotoxic effect, which was not observed for a similar sample cleaned in a C18 column. Thus, considering the ecological importance of higher plants in relation to ecosystems (in contrast to Salmonella spp., which are commonly used in mutagenicity studies), the Vicia micronucleus test was demonstrated to be appropriate for complementing prokaryotic or in vitro tests on diesel exhaust particulate matter included in risk assessments., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. The anaerobic digestion of sugarcane filter cake and the option of co-digestion with bagasse were investigated in a semi-continuous feeding regime to assess the main parameters used for large-scale process designing. Moreover, fresh cattle manure was considered as alternative inoculum for the start-up of biogas reactors in cases where digestate from a biogas plant would not be available in remote rural areas. Experiments were carried out in 6 lab-scale semi-continuous stirred-tank reactors at mesophilic conditions (38±1°C) while the main anaerobic digestion process parameters monitored. Fresh cattle manure demonstrated to be appropriate for the start-up process. However, an acclimation period was required due to the high initial volatile fatty acids concentration (8.5gL(-1)). Regardless the mono-digestion of filter cake presented 50% higher biogas yield (480mLgVS(-1)) than co-digestion with bagasse (320mLgVS(-1)) during steady state conditions. A large-scale co-digestion system would produce 58% more biogas (1008m(3)h(-1)) than mono-digestion of filter cake (634m(3)h(-1)) due to its higher biomass availability for biogas conversion. Considering that the biogas production rate was the technical parameter that displayed the most relevant differences between the analyzed substrate options (0.99-1.45m(3)biogasm(3)d(-1)). The decision of which substrate option should be implemented in practice would be mainly driven by the available construction techniques, since economically efficient tanks could compensate the lower biogas production rate of co-digestion option., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Soil degraded by coal mining activities can be remediated by amendment with agro-industrial organic sludge. However, the environmental impacts associated with this management practice must be properly addressed. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the eco(geno)toxicity of a fresh and a stabilized sludge before use in a laboratory soil remediation test. Chemical analysis of the complex mixtures (degraded soil, fresh sludge, and stabilized sludge) was carried out, as well as a battery of eco(geno)toxicity tests on microbiological enzymes (fluorescein hydrolysis), earthworms, and higher plants (including Vicia faba genotoxicity test), according to published methodologies. The results of these tests showed that fresh sludge was more toxic than sludge stabilized over 6 months toward earthworms and higher plants (lettuce, corn, and wild cabbage), while phyto(geno)toxicity tests with V. faba indicated the same genotoxicity levels for the two types of sludge. In the soil remediation simulation using different mixtures of degraded soil and stabilized sludge, the proportions of 50:50% (dry weight basis) provided the lowest phyto(geno)toxicity effects and this mixture can be used for the revegetation of the contaminated site.

Hospital wastewater treatments must ensure that all genetic material is destroyed, since nuclear and extra-nuclear DNA can show antimicrobial resistance and contain recombinant genes, which promote vertical and/or horizontal gene transfer, amplifying the current problem of the emergence of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. In this study, we investigated whether ozonolysis or ozonolysis/sonolysis in combination can denature genetic material, i.e., destroy the integrity of DNA molecules, present in hospital wastewaters. To achieve this goal, hospital wastewaters were treated by ozonolysis or ozonolysis/sonolysis in combination (at 70 and 100 W L(-1)) and both raw and treated wastewaters were analyzed in terms of disinfection and DNA denaturation efficiency quantified by viable cell counts and by agarose gel electrophoresis. In the ozonolysis treatment, the agarose gel electrophoresis technique showed that the ozone-treated samples contained DNA molecules, while combined ozonolysis/sonolysis destroyed the DNA in a power density-dependent manner (64% at 70 W L(-1) and 81% at 100 W L(-1)). Care must be taken by environmental managers to distinguish disinfection processes from DNA denaturation processes, since these two terms are not synonymous., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. In the present study, we explored the possibility of using the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) as a biomarker after deltamethrin (pyrethroid insecticide) exposure with three strains of the cladoceran Daphnia magna. Four calculated time-weighted deltamethrin concentrations (20.1, 40.3, 80.6 and 161.3 ng L(-1)) were compared against control acetylcholinesterase activity. Our results showed that after 48 h of deltamethrin exposure, all treatments induced a significant decrease of AChE activities whatever the three considered strains. However, diverse responses were registered in terms of lowest observed effect concentrations (LOEC: 80.6 ng L(-1) for strain 1 and 20.1 ng L(-1) for strains 2 and 3) revealing differences in sensitivity among the three tested strains of D. magna. Our results suggest that after deltamethrin exposure, the AChE activity responses can be also used as a biomarker of susceptibility (i.e., variation of strain specific response). Moreover, our results show that strain 1 is the less sensitive in terms of IC50-48 h of AChE, whereas it became the most sensitive when considering the EC50-48 h estimated in the standard ecotoxicity test., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Acute and chronic ecotoxic effects of organophosphorous insecticide malathion (Fyfanon 50 EC 500 g L(-1)) were investigated on three strains of Daphnia magna. The nominal effective concentrations immobilizing 50% (EC50) of Daphnia after 24 and 48 h were 0.53 and 0.36 μg L(-1), 0.70 and 0.44 μg L(-1), and 0.75 and 0.46 μg L(-1) for the strains 1, 2, and 3 respectively. There was an increase in malathion ecotoxicity with time of exposure as confirmed by chronic studies. In fact, after 21 days of exposure, significant effects on survival (lowest observed effect concentration or LOECs) were recorded at malathion concentrations of 22, 220 and 230 ng L(-1) for strains 1, 2 and 3 respectively. Other endpoints were also examined, including reproduction (with different parameters), body length and embryo toxicity. ICs10 and ICs20 were calculated for these different parameters. ICs10 ranged from 4.7 to more than 220 ng L(-1) for the three tested strains. The most sensitive parameter was the number of neonates per adult (ICs10 = 4.7 and 10.8 ng L(-1) for strains 1 and 2 respectively) or the number of broods (IC10 = 10 ng L(-1) for strain 3). Moreover, an increase in embryo development abnormalities was observed at the two highest tested malathion concentrations. Abnormalities comprised undeveloped second antennae, curved or unextended shell spines, and curved post-abdomen spines in live neonates. Results suggest that malathion could act as an endocrine disruptor in D. magna as it interferes with development. It also induces a significant decrease in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities for the three strains. Both strains 2 and 3 seemed more sensitive (LOECs = 60 ng L(-1)) than strain 1 (LOEC = 120 ng L(-1)). Our results suggest that the AChE activity response can also be used as a biomarker of inter-strain (or inter-clonal) susceptibility (i.e. strain (or clone)-specific response).

The Vicia micronucleus assay was standardized in an international protocol, ISO 29200, "Assessment of genotoxic effects on higher plants-Vicia faba micronucleus test," for soil or soil materials (e.g., compost, sludge, sediment, waste, and fertilizing materials). The aim of this interlaboratory study on the Vicia micronucleus assay was to investigate the robustness of this in vivo assay in terms of its applicability in different countries where each participant were asked to use their own seeds and reference soil, in agreement with the ISO 29200 standard. The ISO 29200 standard protocol was adopted for this study, and seven laboratories from three countries (France, Italy, and Brazil) participated in the study. Negative and positive controls were correctly evaluated by 100 % of the participants. In the solid-phase test, the micronucleus frequency (number of micronuclei/1,000 cells) varied from 0.0 to 1.8 for the negative control (i.e., Hoagland's solution) and from 5.8 to 85.7 for the positive control (i.e., maleic hydrazide), while these values varied from 0.0 to 1.7 for the negative control and from 14.3 to 97.7 for the positive control in the case of liquid-phase test. The variability in the data obtained does not adversely affect the robustness of the protocol assessed, on the condition that the methodology described in the standard ISO 29200 is strictly respected. Thus, the Vicia micronucleus test (ISO 29200) is appropriate for complementing prokaryotic or in vitro tests cited in legislation related to risk assessment of genotoxicity potential.

The chemical and ecotoxicological characteristics of fresh and stabilized industrial organic sludge leachates were compared to obtain information regarding how the stabilization process can influence the ecotoxic potential of this industrial waste, which could be used for the amendment of degraded soil. Physicochemical analysis of the sludge leachates, as well as a battery of eco(geno)toxicity tests on bacteria, algae, daphnids, and higher plants (including Vicia faba genotoxicity test) and the determination of hydrolytic enzyme activity, was performed according to standard methods. The chemical comparison of the two types of leachate showed that the samples obtained from stabilized sludge had a lower organic content and higher metal content than leachates of the fresh sludge. The eco(geno)toxicological results obtained with aquatic organisms showed that the stabilized sludge leachate was more toxic than the fresh sludge leachate, both originating from the same industrial organic sludge sample. Nevertheless, phytotoxicity tests carried out with a reference peat soil irrigated with stabilized sludge leachate showed the same toxicity as the fresh sludge leachate. In the case of the industrial solid organic sludge studied, stabilization through a biodegradation process promoted a higher metal mobility/bioavailability/eco(geno)toxicity in the stabilized sludge leachate compared to the fresh sludge leachate.

The different stages involved in coal mining-related activities result in a degraded landscape and sites associated with large amounts of dumped waste material. Remediation of these contaminated soils can be carried out by application of industrial organic sludge if the concerns regarding the potential negative environmental impacts of this experimental practice are properly addressed. In this context, the objective of this study was to use ecotoxicological tests to determine the quantity of organic industrial sludge that is required as a soil amendment to restore soil production while avoiding environmental impact. Chemical analysis of the solids (industrial sludge and soil) and their leachates was carried out as well as a battery of ecotoxicity tests on enzymes (hydrolytic activity), bacteria, algae, daphnids, earthworms, and higher plants, according to standardized methodologies. Solid and leachate samples of coal-contaminated soil were more toxic than those of industrial sludge towards enzyme activity, bacteria, algae, daphnids, and earthworms. In the case of the higher plants (lettuce, corn, wild cabbage, and Surinam cherry) the industrial sludge was more toxic than the coal-contaminated soil, and a soil/sludge mixture (66:34% dry weight basis) had a stimulatory effect on the Surinam cherry biomass. The ecotoxicological assessment of the coal-contaminated soil remediation using sludge as an amendment is very important to determine application rates that could promote a stimulatory effect on agronomic species without negatively affecting the environment.

In Brazil, Solid Waste Disposal Sites have operated without consideration of environmental criteria, these areas being characterized by methane (CH4) emissions during the anaerobic degradation of organic matter. The United Nations organization has made efforts to control this situation, through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol, where projects that seek to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) can be financially rewarded through Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) if they respect the requirements established by the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), such as the use of methodologies approved by the CDM Executive Board (CDM-EB). Thus, a methodology was developed according to the CDM standards related to the aeration, excavation and composting of closed Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfills, which was submitted to CDM-EB for assessment and, after its approval, applied to a real case study in Maringá City (Brazil) with a view to avoiding negative environmental impacts due the production of methane and leachates even after its closure. This paper describes the establishment of this CDM-EB-approved methodology to determine baseline emissions, project emissions and the resultant emission reductions with the application of appropriate aeration, excavation and composting practices at closed MSW landfills. A further result obtained through the application of the methodology in the landfill case study was that it would be possible to achieve an ex-ante emission reduction of 74,013 tCO2 equivalent if the proposed CDM project activity were implemented.

Acute and different chronic ecotoxic effects of deltamethrin have been investigated on two strains (coming from two different laboratories) of Daphnia magna. The effective concentrations immobilizing 50% of daphnids (EC50s) after 24 h and 48 h were 9.40 and 0.32 μg L(-1), 8.86 and 0.63 μg L(-1) for first strain (strain 1) and second strain (strain 2), respectively. Thus, there was an increase of deltamethrin ecotoxicity with time of exposure as confirmed by chronic studies. After 21 days of exposure to deltamethrin, daphnids have showed significant effects on survival at deltamethrin concentrations of 0.16 μg L(-1) and 0.31 μg L(-1) for strains 1 and 2, respectively. Eleven other endpoints were examined: body length, population growth rate and various reproductive parameters (days to first brood, number of broods, number of cumulative molts and number of neonates), embryotoxicity and appearance of males. IC10 values related to the number of juveniles per live adult were 11 and 46 ng L(-1) for strains 1 and 2, respectively. Furthermore, an increase in embryo deformities was observed at the highest concentrations tested for both strains. Following deltamethrin exposure, undeveloped second antennae, curved or unextended shell spines, and curved post abdomen spines were observed in live neonates. The production of male juveniles was only registered with strain 1 at 0.16 μg L(-1). Results suggest that deltamethrin could act as an endocrine disruptor in D. magna as it interferes with sex determination and development abnormality but there is a difference in sensitivity between the two tested strains., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. It is useful to test ecotoxicity and genotoxicity endpoints in the environmental impact assessment. Here, we compare and discuss ecotoxicity and genotoxicity effects in organisms in response to exposure to arsenate (As V) in solution. Eco(geno)toxicity responses in Aliivibrio fischeri, Lytechinus variegatus, Daphnia magna, Skeletonema costatum and Vicia faba were analyzed by assessing different endpoints: biomass growth, peroxidase activity, mitotic index, micronucleus frequency, and lethality in accordance with the international protocols. Quantitative sensitivity relationships (QSR) between these endpoints were established in order to rank endpoint sensitivity. The results for the QSR values based on the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) ratios varied from 2 (for ratio of root peroxidase activity to leaf peroxidase activity) to 2286 (for ratio of higher plant biomass growth to root peroxidase activity). The QSR values allowed the following sensitivity ranking to be established: higher plant enzymatic activity>daphnids≈echinoderms>bacteria≈algae>higher plant biomass growth. The LOEC values for the mitotic index and micronucleus frequency (LOEC=0.25mgAsL(-1)) were similar to the lowest LOEC values observed in aquatic organisms. Agrochemicals have the potential to cause deleterious effects on living organisms and therefore they must be subjected to various (eco)toxicological studies and monitoring programs in order to protect human health and the environment. The aim of this study was to assess the ecotoxicity of a new natural formicide with a battery of three classical and three ecotox-kit tests. The former tests were performed with Aliivibrio fischeri bacteria (Lumistox test), the cladoceran Daphnia magna and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata algae, and the latter with Thamnotoxkit F(TM) (Thamnocephalus platyurus), Ostracodtoxkit F® (Heterocypris incongruens) and LuminoTox (photosynthetic enzyme complexes). In the range of formicide concentrations tested (from 0.06 to 2.0 g L(-1)), the measurement endpoint values varied from 0.79 g L(-1) for the algal test to > 2 g L(-1) for the LuminoTox and Ostracodtoxkit F® tests. Hierarchical sensitivity ranking based on the no-observed effect concentration (NOEC) values established to assess the formicide ecotoxicity was as follows: algal growth inhibition test ≈ daphnid immobilization test ≈ bacterial luminescence inhibition test > Thamnotoxkit F™ > LuminoTox > Ostracodtoxkit F®. Overall, results from the battery of bioassays showed that this formicide preparation presents low ecotoxicity as compared to the aquatic ecotoxicity of presently commercialized formicides. In conclusion, classical aquatic bioassays are more sensitive than ecotox-kit tests in the assessment and monitoring of the new natural formicide.

Since the development of the TIE (Toxicity Identification and Evaluation) in 1988 it has been assumed that the capacity of EDTA and sodium thiosulfate to complex some metals, and thus remove their toxicity, can be applied to both freshwater and seawater ecotoxicological tests and the results subsequently interpreted. However, it is now known that there is a wide variability in the extent of this complexation. In this context, the removal of toxicity caused by the presence of Hg(2+), Cd(2+), Cu(2+), Cr(6+), Zn(2+), Ni(2+), Pb(2+), Ag(1+) and Se(2+), through metal complexation by EDTA and sodium thiosulfate, in relation to the performance of embryo-larval tests with the sea urchin Arbacia lixula was investigated. It was observed that EDTA was capable of removing the toxicity of Pb(2+), Zn(2+) and Cu(2+) while sodium thiosulfate only reduced the toxicity of Ag(1+). Compared to the complexation observed in freshwater ecotoxicological tests, the complexing agents used in this study (EDTA and sodium thiosulfate) have a lower capacity to complex metals in the marine ecotoxicological test with A. lixula., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
