We monitored the z=0.158 quasar 3C273 between 2015 and 2019 in the optical (BVrz) and near-infrared (JHK) with the aim to perform dust reverberation mapping. Accounting for host galaxy and accretion disk contributions, we obtained pure dust light curves in JHK. Cross correlations between the V-band and the dust light curves yield an average rest-frame delay for the hot dust of tau_cent ~ 410 days. This is a factor 2 shorter than expected from the the dust ring radius R_x ~ 900 light days reported from interferometric studies. The dust covering factor (CF) is about 8%, much smaller than predicted from the half covering angle of 45 degree found for active galactic nuclei (AGN). We analyse the asymmetric shape of the correlation functions and explore whether an inclined bi-conical bowl-shaped dust torus geometry could bring these findings (tau_cent, R_x and CF) into a consistent picture. The hot varying dust emission originates from the edge of the bowl rim with a small covering angle 40 < theta < 45 degree, and we see only the near side of the bi-conus. Such a dust gloriole with R_x = 900 +/- 200 ld and an inclination i = 12 degree matches the data remarkably well. Comparing the results of 3C273 with literature for less luminous AGN, we find a lag-luminosity relation tau propto L^alpha with alpha between 0.33 and 0.40, flatter than the widely adopted relation with alpha = 0.5. At the Universitaetssternwarte Bochum near Cerro Armazones we have monitored the Seyfert-1 galaxy 3C 120 between September 2014 and March 2015 in BVRI and a narrow band filter covering the redshifted H alpha line; in addition we obtained a single con-temporary spectrum with FAST at Mt. Hopkins. Compared to earlier epochs 3C 120 is about a factor of three brighter, allowing us to study the shape of the broad line region (BLR) and the dust torus in a high luminosity phase. The analysis of the light curves yields that the dust echo is rather sharp and symmetric in contrast to the more complex broad H alpha BLR echo. We investigate how far this supports an optically thick bowl-shaped BLR and dust torus geometry as proposed by Kawaguchi & Mori (2010) and Goad et al. (2012). The comparison with several parameterizations of these models supports the following geometry: the BLR clouds lie inside the bowl closely above the bowl rim, up to a half covering angle 0 deg < theta < 40 deg (measured against the equatorial plane). Then the BLR is spread over many isodelay surfaces, yielding a smeared and structured echo as observed. Furthermore, if the BLR clouds shield the bottom of the bowl rim against radiation from the nucleus, the hot dust emission comes essentially from the top edge of the bowl (40 deg < theta < 45 deg). Then, for small inclinations as for 3C120, the top dust edge forms a ring which largely coincides with a narrow range of isodelay surfaces, yielding the observed sharp dust echo. The scale height of the BLR increases with radial distance from the black hole. This leads to luminosity dependent foreshortening effects of the lag. New $B$- and $V$-band monitoring in 2014 $-$ 2015 reveals that the Seyfert 1 Galaxy, 3C120, has brightened by a magnitude of $1.4$, compared to our campaign that took place in 2009 $-$ 2010. This allowed us to check for the debated luminosity and time-dependent color variations claimed for SDSS quasars. For our 3C120 data, we find that the $B/V$ flux ratio of the variable component in the bright epoch is indistinguishable from the faint one. We do not find any color variability on different timescales ranging from about $1$ to $1800$ days. We suggest that the luminosity and time-dependent color variability is an artifact caused by analyzing the data in magnitudes instead of fluxes. The flux variation gradients of both epochs yield consistent estimates of the host galaxy contribution to our 7.5" aperture. We revisit the relation between H2O maser detection rate and nuclear obscuration for a sample of 114 Seyfert galaxies, drawn from the CfA, 12um and IRAS F25/F60 catalogs. These sources have mid-infrared spectra from the Spitzer Space Telescope and they are searched for X-ray and [O III], 5007Angstrom fluxes from the literature. We use the strength of the [O IV], 25.9um emission line as tracer for the intrinsic AGN strength. After normalization by [O IV] the observed X-ray flux provides information about X-ray absorption. The distribution of X-ray / [O IV] flux ratios is significantly different for masers and non-masers: The maser detected Seyfert-2s (Sy 1.8-2.0) populate a distinct X-ray / [O IV] range which is, on average, about a factor four lower than the range of Seyfert-2 non-masers and about a factor of ten lower than the range of Seyfert-1s (Sy 1.0-1.5). Non-masers are almost equally distributed over the entire X-ray / [O IV] range. This provides evidence that high nuclear obscuration plays a crucial role for the probability of maser detection. Furthermore, after normalization with [O IV], we find a similar but weaker trend for the distribution of the maser detection rate with the absorption of the 7um dust continuum. This suggests that the obscuration of the 7 um continuum occurs on larger spatial scales than that of the X-rays. Hence, in the AGN unified model, at moderate deviation from edge-on, the 7um dust absorption may occur without proportionate X-ray absorption. The absorption of [O III] appears unrelated to maser detections. The failure to detect masers in obscured AGN is most likely due to insufficient observational sensitivity.
