Research suggests that small, independent delicatessens are less likely to follow proper sanitation procedures, including slicer inspection, which could lead to a higher likelihood of these delis being a reservoir for Listeria monocytogenesgrowth and cross-contamination. This study was undertaken to determine the incidence of L. monocytogenesin counter-sliced turkey deli meat obtained from independent delis in an urban city. Deli meat, counter-sliced on site, was collected from 118 independent delis in New York City. The samples were analyzed for L. monocytogenesusing the U.S. Department of Agriculture Microbiology Laboratory Guidebookmethodology for isolation and confirmation. The selection criteria for delis included using the city's restaurant inspection and grading system. Two samples, from separate delis, were confirmed as positive for L. monocytogenes(1.69%). Analysis of the genomic sequences of one of the samples revealed a close match to a cluster of six clinical isolates, which were part of an ongoing multistate listeriosis outbreak spanning four states. The sequence of the second isolate matched a clinical isolate in a neighboring state. Both isolates were obtained from delis that did not have the top inspection grade. Although a snapshot of one urban area, this study is the first report on the current incidence of L. monocytogeneson counter-sliced deli meat from independent deli establishments. This study suggests that these delis can potentially serve as sources of L. monocytogenescontamination or contribute to downstream foodborne listeriosis. Information provided by city inspection and grading systems, in addition to the letter grade, may serve as a tool to identify delis with potential L. monocytogenescontamination issues and a basis for product and environmental sampling by public health authorities.

Rogers was a freshly minted CEO trying to lead Public Service Indiana back from the brink of bankruptcy when the results of a 10-year federal study on acid rain were released. He became convinced that legislation to curb sulfur dioxide emissions was inevitable-and that his industry should have a seat at the negotiating table. Though his peers were opposed to any government action, cap and trade looked to him like a smart and creative compromise that would enable utilities to modernize their plants and meet aggressive emissions targets without sending electricity prices skyrocketing. In 1990 Rogers testified before Congress in support of cap and trade, which was established by the Clean Air Act Amendments that year. A relatively high number of allowances gave PSI time to make a deliberate and sustainable transition to cleaner generation. Within three years the company's market capitalization had increased by more than 65%, while its price to customers had dropped. By 1995 its sulfur dioxide emissions were down by 30%.PSI acquired a national reputation; it merged with Cincinnati Gas & Electric to create Cinergy, which in 2006 merged with Duke Energy. Together with 21 other companies and five leading environmental organizations, Duke created the U.S. Climate Action Partnership to lobby for strong federal legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
