The FAIR[1] facility is an international accelerator centre for research with ion and antiproton beams. It is being built at Darmstadt, Germany as an extension to the current GSI research institute. One major part of the facility will be the Super-FRS[2] separator, which will be include in phase one of the project construction. The NUSTAR experiments will benefit from the Super-FRS, which will deliver an unprecedented range of radioactive ion beams (RIB). These experiments will use beams of different energies and characteristics in three different branches; the high-energy which utilizes the RIB at relativistic energies 300-1500 MeV/u as created in the production process, the low-energy branch aims to use beams in the range of 0-150 MeV/u whereas the ring branch will cool and store beams in the NESR ring. The main tasks for the Super-FRS beam diagnostics chambers will be for the set up and adjustment of the separator as well as to provide tracking and event-by-event particle identification. The Helsinki Institute of Physics, and the Detector Laboratory and Experimental Electronics at GSI are in a joint R&D of a GEM-TPC detector which could satisfy the requirements of such tracking detectors, in terms of tracking efficiency, space resolution, count rate capability and momenta resolution. The current prototype, which is the generation four of this type, is two GEM-TPCs in twin configuration inside the same vessel. This means that one of the GEM-TPC is flipped on the middle plane w.r.t. the other one. This chamber was tested at Jyv\"askyl\"a accelerator with protons projectiles and at GSI with Uranium, fragments and Carbon beams during this year 2016., Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures

The Kaos spectrometer is maintained by the A1 collaboration at the Mainz Microtron MAMI with a focus on the study of (e,e'K^+) coincidence reactions. For its electron-arm two vertical planes of fiber arrays, each comprising approximately 10 000 fibers, are operated close to zero degree scattering angle and in close proximity to the electron beam. A nearly dead-time free DAQ system to acquire timing and tracking information has been installed for this spectrometer arm. The signals of 144 multi-anode photomultipliers are collected by 96-channel front-end boards, digitized by double-threshold discriminators and the signal time is picked up by state-of-the-art F1 time-to-digital converter chips. In order to minimize background rates a sophisticated trigger logic was implemented in newly developed Vuprom modules. The trigger performs noise suppression, signal cluster finding, particle tracking, and coincidence timing, and can be expanded for kinematical matching (e'K^+) coincidences. The full system was designed to process more than 4 000 read-out channels and to cope with the high electron flux in the spectrometer and the high count rate requirement of the detectors. The Transition Radiation Detector (TRD) was designed and built to enhance the capabilities of the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While aimed at providing electron identification and triggering, the TRD also contributes significantly to the track reconstruction and calibration in the central barrel of ALICE. In this paper the design, construction, operation, and performance of this detector are discussed. A pion rejection factor of up to 410 is achieved at a momentum of 1 GeV/$c$ in p-Pb collisions and the resolution at high transverse momentum improves by about 40% when including the TRD information in track reconstruction. Research on the microorganisms inhabiting deep aquifers is based on sampling the water released from deep wells and is seldom concerned with the physicochemical processes of the water-rock system. The issue of metabolism of aerobic prokaryotes revealed in deep habitats by molecular techniques remains unclear. Cultivation is required for direct determination of relation of prokaryotes to oxygen. In the present work, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, which were revealed in thermal radon baths of the Belokurikha resort by molecular techniques, were isolated. Profiling by the 16S rRNA gene revealed predominance of members of the Deionococcus-Thermus group belonging to the genus Meiothermus (17.6% reads) and considered strictly aerobic. Anaerobic sulfate-reducing Thermodesulfovibrio were also present in the sample. The habitat was characterized by reductive, alkaline conditions. Target-oriented cultivation revealed aerobically growing Meiothermus sp. 1165, which was closely related to Meiothermus cerbereus. An alkaliphilic anaerobic sulfate reducer Thermodesulfovibrio sp. 1176 was also isolated. The rate of sulfate reduction measured in the Belokurikha water using yielded the value of 41.4 ± 1.06 µg S
red L–1 day–1 , or 1.29 nmol S mL–1 day–1 . Analysis of the genome of strain 1176 revealed the presence of various mechanisms responsible for its relative resistance to oxygen and oxidative stress, which included superoxide reductase, rubredoxin, a Fe-Mn family superoxide dismutase, a KatG catalase-peroxidase, and a cytochrome bd ubiquinol oxidase. The low redox potential and intense anaerobic sulfate reduction provide evidence for the generally reduced conditions in the Belokurikha deep horizons. Spatial separation of aerobes and anaerobes in the water-rock system, similar to the one occurring in the terrestrial microbial mats, may be hypothesized, as well as occurring of aerobic processes in microniches.
